Normally it takes a full-round to diplomacy in combat. This scenario has a special circumstance that allows you to do it as a standard for some reason.

Action: Using Diplomacy to influence a creature's attitude takes 1 minute of continuous interaction. Making a request of a creature takes 1 or more rounds of interaction, depending upon the complexity of the request. Using Diplomacy to gather information takes 1d4 hours of work searching for rumors and informants.
More accurately, to request something of a character is a full-round. The normal use of diplomacy (attitude-changing) is a minute of interaction, though PFS (Even in S5) has this really bad habit of having non-transparent "6 second negotiations" and an overabundance of Diplomacy checks.

Hawthorne calls out to the elves, entreating the party's good intentions, but his pleas seem to fall on deaf ears.
