Richard points at the sphere and whispers to his companions. "I believe the voice is coming from that. It is a cerebic fungus. A sentient plant."
A bit louder, he addresses the creature. "We are travelers, looking for a lost companion. This place... it appears to be some kind of metal structure. We do not know its purpose, but are trying to learn. Do you have a name? Are you stuck here?"
As he talks, Richard glances around the area, trying to figure out the purpose of the device and the fungus within it.

"Just don't let it eat you," Maruf snarls. "Hey! Fungus! Where's the wizard? Tell us that and I'll tell you everything you want to know."
Richard Mithril |
"We are not tasty." Richard says quickly, trying to cut off that line of thought. "And even if we were, we'd be a temporary snack. Few beings come down here, and it would be a long time before another chance for food came around. But I think we can get you something. What do you like to eat?"
Any idea from our nature rolls what a cerebric fungus might eat? Besides us.

"If there is anything else in this place, they probably heard that scream.." Richard pokes the fungus to make sure it's dead, then gets out his sickle and cuts it apart. "I don't want to think this, but if Khonnar came this way, it might have.. eaten him."
Search the fungus. Search the room. If Kharax is out of healing I have a couple cure light wounds left on the scroll to heal Alpha with.
Maruf the Cobbler |
"I don't know, I actually kinda liked it. Would've kept it as a pet if, you know, it didn't want to eat us."
Maruf looks around the room. "There's not as much blood in this room. If it didn't eat him it ate the blood and we've lost the trail. But there's only one door in this room so let's follow it."
GM Tektite |
Searching the room, Richard finds a small metal box under the easternmost table that contains three gun-like devices.
FLARE GUN PRICE
300 GP
TYPE one-handed ranged PROFICIENCY exotic (firearms)
DMG (M) 1d8 fire DMG (S) 1d6 fire CRITICAL ×3
RANGE 240 ft. CAPACITY 1 USAGE disposable
SPECIAL slow-firing, touch WEIGHT 1 lb.
A flare gun looks like a wide-barreled pistol, and although it can be used in combat, the item’s primary use is to send signals. A flare gun and its ammunition (a small, rocket-propelled magnesium charge) are completely self-contained and disposable—once fired, a flare gun is useless. While a flare gun has excellent range, the flare tends to wobble and spiral in flight, incurring a 20% miss chance if it’s being used to target a specific point. The flare detonates once it hits a target or reaches its maximum range of 2,400 feet, bursting into a sphere of fire that illuminates a 120-foot-radius area for 1 minute as it drifts slowly back to the ground. Any creatures within 20 feet of the flare must succeed at a DC 12 Fortitude saving throw each round or be dazzled by the intense light for as long as they remain in the area. Creatures adjacent to a lit flare are also blinded for 1d4 rounds on a failed save. A creature struck by a flare takes 1d8 points of fire damage (1d6 points of fire damage from Small flare guns), and continues to take the same amount of fire damage each round until the flare is removed. Removing a flare is a full-round action.
Moving to the next chamber, the finds a corridor with doors to the east, west, and south. The blood trail reusmes and goes through the eastern doors.
Richard Mithril |
"Maybe we shouldn't experiment with them until we know for certain." Richard glances at the Cobbler, not really expecting that all will heed his advice. Reloading his crossbow, he moves to the eastern door, checks for danger, then opens it.
Maruf the Cobbler |
"F+++ that! If Alpha doesn't know what they do, there's only one way to find out." Maruf points the gun at his own foot and pulls the trigger.
GM Tektite |
Lol!
As Alpha heads toward the eastern doors, Maruf points the gun-thing at his foot and fires! Suddenly there is loud concussion as the ammunition hits his foot, explodes, and bathes the room in an intense light! DC 12 Fort or be dazzled for a minute. Maruf and anyone adjacent (which looks like everyone) to him is also blinded for 1d4 ⇒ 3 rounds on a failed save. On his foot, the charge smolders and glows, burning his foot! 1d8 ⇒ 5 damage. The device seems spent after its activation.
Once everyone has recovered from the tiefling's experiment, Alpha continues through eastern door to enter some sort of lab. Metal desks sit to the north and south of this long room, yet the most distinctive features are a pair of odd, bedlike tables flanked by curving panels of blinking, pulsing lights. Moving armatures of metal extend out over the beds, each outfitted with glowing panes of glass and strangely glowing tools. The chamber reeks of blood, with great crimson stains splashed across the device, beds and floors. Standing near the rear of the room is a four-legged construct. As you enter, it immediately moves to attack!

Is it fire damage? The description says burned but I wasn't sure that meant fire damage and I honestly can't remember from when I GM'd this part.
