I just read the sidebar on page 10 of the Ptolus player's guide that talks about Imperial Identification Papers. Do we all automatically have these?

I just realized Tilver has the ability to use inspiration for free on his initiative checks. I've added it to his stat line/sheet (Init: +3+1d6), but I thought I would highlight it here for our good GM.

Yes. As natives of Ptolus, you all have papers.

Looking around at the Paizo site it seems that the general feeling is that a bard can cast spells with verbal components while maintaining a bardic performance. But it doesn't seem to be explicitly spelled out in the rules. What is your opinion on this, Scott?


Yes, I agree. It would be a poor character otherwise.

So I guess it would be good to know is Tilver skilled at dealing with traps? I went with the Bloodrager and currently it is not his forte. I can work on improving that when we level if needed.

Yeah, it looks like he has a slightly better Perception than Silas, but he has the Trapfinder class trait and a pretty good Disable Device too (you can click on a character name or portrait and see the character sheet).

So Tilver has that angle covered.

Yeah, I thought of that and actually looked myself after I posted. It might be good for him to check things if we think it will be trapped. Especially as I lack the ability to find magical traps.

So, I had rearranged some skills when we got our background skill points and I added Know (Religion) - but I realized that I didn't update my sheet (just saw that when I went to make this recent roll).
Scott, let me know if you want me to not use it for this encounter/adventure/whatever since it's kind of 11th hour to let you know about it.

Phew, what a fight! For what it's worth, the previous group I played with talked their way past the Cobbledman. I know you tried. I seem to recall someone rolling "20" on a Diplomacy check back then.

He was -slightly- enhanced to make up for your numbers (and how much more deadly Pathfinder characters are than 3rd Edition characters), but Tilver's (and Velika's!) crit would have ended him either way.

That's right, we made him a friend, though i don't remember him being so monstrous with two heads. I didn't realize that he wasn't supposed to be a social encounter.

Definitely scary. I really didn't want to use my last 2nd level spell on another Cure Moderate Wounds (I have other spells, really!), but after that crit it seemed necessary.

He wasn't evil. He's essentially Frankenstein's monster. There is a clue to this in Maquent's journal. He's enraged when anyone gets on the bridge, so you have a very tiny window for diplomacy and need to roll well. I think 95% of encounters with the Cobbledman would go the way this one did.

It wasn't, but I note that I had five players back then and the rhodintor took two of them down (but not out), and everyone used Hero Points like water. So... maybe use 'em? Or run?

I am pretty sure we didn't have them at the start. But I will happily use them.


Fun Ptolus Hero Points story. Tim (Tilver) played in my first face-to-face Ptolus game. At some point in the Banewarrens, his character ran up against a fire giant who hit him hard enough to kill him. He spent two hero points to avoid death. So I ruled that instead, the giant had merely severed his sword arm.

So this seems like it might be a real setback for a martial character, but a few weeks later, the faction of angels to whom the team was allied contacted the character. One of the holiest of their angels had been killed ages before and only his arm survived. They offered to graft the angel's arm onto Tim's character in exchange for handling some small matters the angels didn't want to touch...
