I have a character concept and the crunch for it, but I need to run something by you, GM Soul, before I submit my character.
Shoot; what is it you need? Write here or PM if preferred!
I'm going to have to withdrawal my application for Davrich. My time has been limited recently, and I haven't been able to sit down and write a backstory. A pity. Have fun everyone!
I'm sad to see you go :( best of luck on your endeavors!

GM Soul |

Hi GM soul.... As the setting is Nirmathas and I see we have no nature type martials yet, I am going to throw in a hunter for application.
My question is, would you like the animal companion written into the back story and available at game start? Or would you prefer it is found during game play
I have no personal preference, however if you prefer one way over the other, let me know so I could incorporate if your character is chosen.
We are going through part of the forest as per the module, thus the companion can be found there if you decide you'd like it to be found during game play.
If not, just incorporate it within the backstory and it should be fine :)

Malagaar DeBrowen |

This is Arkham Guilford submitting my application. I decided against the Hunter as I felt that if I get accepted, my first ever PbP should not be essentially running 2 characters. So instead I submit my choice for the Quest of the Everflame!!!
After he was done his chores.
That did not stop Malagaar from learning to fight. Nirmathas was under constant attack from those who would take her freedom away so even though his father worked him hard, he did allow him training time for battle.
Malagaars trainer noticed something unusual about the way Malagaar fought. He did not strike with savagery like a lot of the boys did. His was a more practical, logical approach. He would circle his opponent and study him, almost as if learning his moves before the opponent knew them. When Malagaar struck he struck quickly. More often than not the opponent was down before the fight even started.
As a result the instructor allowed Malaggar to forgo the heavy armor training and instead focus on mobility. He also gave our young hero many weapons to try and oddly enough Malagaar took to the longer weapons like staves and pole arms.
What was interesting to his instructor was the method Malagar used these weapons. He would often trip up his opponents quickly, get them on their backsides and strike. The other students were not used to this odd type of combat.
Another odd quirk about Malagaar was that after chores and training, the other lads would go off for a bit of fun and have a few pints, but Malaggar stayed behind, studying. He would study whatever he could get his hands on, books on the woods surrounding him, books on the local area, anything. His ability to absorb this knowledge was uncanny. Maybe he would be a Forest Marshall one day.
On the eve of his 21st birthday his father approached him to tell him he felt he was ready for the Quest of the Everflame, a rite of passage for young heroes of Kassen. His father handed Malagaar a long object wrapped in cloth, it was a beautifully crafted Guisarme!
His father recognized Malagaars fighting style, it was the same way his grandfather used to fight, and this weapon was used back then and now it was time for it to be handed down to its new owner.
Malagaar hefted the weapon, it felt perfect in his hands. He was ready for this quest…he was ready for anything!

Impressive Malagaar! I have but one teensy little nit pick for you.
Your weapon damage, 2d4+4 (This includes the 1.5 STR from two-handing a weapon) is good. However when it comes to two handing a weapon and using power attack, the amount of damage you increase is not 2, but plus 50% more on that. So instead of 2d4+6, it is 2d4+7. Good news right?
Benefit: You can choose to take a –1 penalty on all melee attack rolls and combat maneuver checks to gain a +2 bonus on all melee damage rolls. This bonus to damage is increased by half (+50%) if you are making an attack with a two-handed weapon, a one handed weapon using two hands, or a primary natural weapon that adds 1-1/2 times your Strength modifier on damage rolls. This bonus to damage is halved (–50%) if you are making an attack with an off-hand weapon or secondary natural weapon.
When your base attack bonus reaches +4, and every 4 points thereafter, the penalty increases by –1 and the bonus to damage increases by +2.
You must choose to use this feat before making an attack roll, and its effects last until your next turn. The bonus damage does not apply to touch attacks or effects that do not deal hit point damage.
Emphasis mine.

Uriel Leveton; "Blade-Bearer" |

Sorry about taking so long to get my submission up; the past few days have been busier than I expected. This is only the crunch, but I'll try and get the fluff up before I go to work. If not, I get off work at about 11:30 tonight, so it may not be up in time for the deadline, but I assume since I'm already in that'd be okay?

I definitely understand! With this communication, you'll be fine. The only thing I ask about the crunch is if I may know specifically what ethnicity of human you are.
Other than that, when you do the backstory, just incorporate how your character is connected to Kassen and what would have him be able to take the "Rite of Passage", even if he is only there for a short time.

Nicely done everyone! Imma let the deadline continue until tonight just in case there are any other last minute applicants. :)

@ Uriel - Well, you heard the Kobold, no smiting the Tiefling.
Not going to lie, that would be an interesting group and make for some interesting roleplay.
So, I have good news for everyone.
I understand that I mentioned I was looking for four heroes total. However I hadn't thought of things in the sense of, "What if someone drops?"
To prevent me from going back to recruitment, I will announce, hours before the admissions are over, that I am looking into taking one, to possibly two additional characters.
This would probably be a good time for me to start talking about my DM'ing style and seeing if you all have any issues.
Each and every day that I work, I can post during the free time that I have (and I have large amounts of free time). The only thing is that my job conveniently blocks Google Docs and Imgur. So I will have to either upload images at home, or find some other way to upload.
Which brings me to my next statement: Maps will be provided via a link to a campaign to Roll20. If you do not have an account, I suggest one be made at least to see the map. My job hasn't found my addiction too harmful yet, so they haven't blocked roll20, which makes it the easiest way to show maps. I may even show things within the journals of the campaign.
Because I'm taking in more people, you can expect me to ramp up the difficulty accordingly. This can include to adding an encounter, changing encounters, to outright scrapping and replacing encounters with more dynamic ones. I won't forget the roleplay because -- who doesn't like to roleplay? :)
I want you guys to start thinking about how, if you're chosen, you'd want to start in the adventure. A couple of days before the ceremony to where background story can elapse, or straight to the main event and fill in the blanks later?
Let me know if you guys have any issues or concerns. I'm more than happy to address them!

GM Soul |

Good Morning, Afternoon, Evening!
I first want to say thank you to all who submitted their characters. I have to admit, this batch was definitely an inspiring one and pushed me to start writing more vivid backgrounds and characters of my own!
Nonetheless, I couldn't pick all of you, and the max I look to go with players is six. This was, in fact, one of the hardest decisions I've had to make in gaming, as I myself have felt the sting of not being picked when submitting a thorough character.
I gave a little extra time while I was asleep just in case there were any last minute submissions, however the recruitment thread is now closed.
The applicants whom I have chosen will be PM'd shortly, and I will be starting the discussion thread very soon after so we can all become acquainted. Right after that, the Gameplay thread will follow, and we shall begin.
All in all, thank you everyone for your submissions, and to those who do not want to let their characters die, please submit them to this thread. It's an awesome idea with plenty of potential!
Thank you again, and best of luck on your endeavors!
