Can't move from a phone, I'd like to be to the left of Taerel and under Kamda.
Zephyr steps forward and draws his sword. "You are right, this looks more like a cavern that grew in to me..."
Zephyr looks around for any potential hazards of any other moving things.
Perception: 1d20 ⇒ 19
Edit: Thanks, Kamda.

![]() |

Fingalad follows the lead of the others and draws his Longbow, nocking an arrow as he comes up behind them. He looks around at the cavern. What a beauty.
Also, I never rolled my own Fort saves.
Fort. Save 1: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (15) - 1 = 14
Fort. Save 1: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (11) - 1 = 10
So if a 10 is a fail, then we'll need to burn another charge from the wand for Fingalad.

![]() |

10 is indeed a fail for that check. 1d6 ⇒ 3 nonlethal damage, which should easily be taken care of by one wand charge.
Moving into the cavern, which is illuminated by a soft glow of fungus, you see by two pillars are large bundles of what only be guessed are egg sacs.

![]() |

Zephyr hustles over to the closer of the two pillars, his sword raised over his head. (Up four squares, five to the right.) "Let's get ready! These might be the giant insects! If whatever comes out of there is hostile, we'll take it!"
Can I ready an action to attack if a giant bug or other creature comes out? Perhaps it might be a surprise round?

![]() |

Sadly, no. Readying an action is something that is exclusive to being in combat. That said...
As Zephyr nears the eggs, two mounds of sand quickly rise from the ground. From beneath them emerge two large glowing beetles!

Please put Kamda directly to the left of Zephyr.
Kamda shouts when the beetles appear, and runs forward to stand aside Zephyr.
Keep 'em contained! Iffen there be more we ain't wantin ta get overrunned!

![]() |

In my grogginess after work last night, I thought everyone had done one. Apologies.
Dunkel: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18
Fingalad: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (16) + 10 = 26
Ranor: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9
Dunkel and Fingalad may also take a surprise round action.
Kamda, you have been moved.
Taerel, which action is your surprise round action? Moving or casting? Can only do one this round.

![]() |

At the sight of the beetles, Fingalad's face becomes solemn. In one smooth motion he draws back his bow-string, raises his bow, and steps to the left. He takes only a moment to aim at the beetle in the back. The low *thwump* of his bow-string release echoes slightly through the cavern, followed a moment later by the sound of an arrow clattering harmlessly to the ground.
Longbow, attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
At least I'm getting some bad rolls out of the way...
No worries, GM. I understand how that can happen. I'm just glad you weren't assuming that Fingalad is deaf and dumb unless I roll a perception check.

![]() |

Do I get a surprise action?
It looks like you do, but you rolled lower Init than the Beetles.

![]() |

No worries, GM. I understand how that can happen. I'm just glad you weren't assuming that Fingalad is deaf and dumb unless I roll a perception check.
Who, me? I would never... *avoids direct eye contact*
Also didn't see that you rolled one, and that result didn't meet the DC. Ah well, was just as effective, hahaha. Those with good reactions and good eyes get into position and an arrow may or may not skitter across the sandy cavern.

Fingalad begins reciting a poem. His clear voice, strong and unearthly, gives his companions an increased will to fight.
I sang of leaves, of leaves of gold,
and leaves of gold there grew:
Of wind I sang, a wind there came
and in the branches blew...
As he chants, he strides toward the near columns, making to go between them and come out flanking the beetles on the other side.
That was a standard action, so he'll move Eastish 30 ft.

![]() |

"How dare you!" Zephyr bellows, taking the bite like it was like - a bug bite. "I am a holy knight in Abadar's service, and I will erase your imperfection from the land!" Having got his vibes on, Zephyr slices downward with all of his might.
Attack on Bug: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15
Damage: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (5, 4) + 6 = 15

![]() |

Zephyr swings with his righteous fury and the sword lodges itself into the ground. At first it seems as if nothing happened.
Then the beetle falls to the ground in two halves, cleanly cleaved in twain by the blow!

![]() |

Ranor moves in towards the remaining beetle and slams his flail into the creature.
Light Flail: 1d20 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 5 + 1 = 24
damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8

![]() |

Ranor moves in and crushes the remaining beetle, causing some form of glowing liquid to seep from its fractured carapace and spill over the sand beneath it.
Out of combat!
Those what noticed the beetles before they attacked spot an odd composition to one of the egg clutches there by Zephyr. Indeed, it looks as if part of an egg is composed of an unfurled scroll which is easily collected. Additionally, you find three stoppered vials laying at the base of the eggs.
Items obtained:
1 scroll of lesser restoration
3 potions of cure light wounds
So, the infamous RPG phrase, what do you all do?

![]() |

Kamda sighs with frustration when the two beetles are so easily dispatched, and whispers
Ye'll get yers soon Gerta...
Then he starts looking around the room.
Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18
Survival: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17
He then points to the northwest of this area, where is a large tunnel that seems heavily traveled as of late.
The minitaur was here, fer sure, but it be lookin' like he was attacked by a dozen or more creatures o' these bugs and dragged deeper into that cave system.

![]() |

Fingalad comes out from between the columns and smiles at the Paladins. "Well done."
His smile fades at Kamda's news. "It sounds like Nuar is in danger. Let us press on."
As they prepare to move out of the cavern, Fingalad straps on a Buckler.

Dunkel nods his agreement as he kicks one of the carapaces.
"Aye, well done, cousin. We'd better hurry along though, no tellin' what other trouble this minotaur's gotten 'imself inta'."

I think Fingalad and the Paladins are the only ones who can use the CLW wand. So far though it has only mattered for roleplay purposes.

Kamda takes his place at the front of the line, but not before patting the two Paladins on the arms (get it, because he can't reach their shoulder? Get it? *crickets chirp*) and saying
Ach, good swings there. Make a dwarf mama proud, ye two would.
He presses forward.

![]() |

As ye press forward, the natural caverns suddenly give way to worked stone and metal fixtures. Dangling glass balls flicker and cast a weak, greenish glow across the chamber. Ahead, a series of greentiled, wide, terraced stairs slope up to an imposing bronze door, partly torn from its hinges. The stairs bear hundreds of symbols that seem to warp and flicker. Animal carcasses and insect carapaces litter the area.

With the two more hits, the creature you now identify as a morlock falls to the ground.
Out of combat
As you near the doors at the far end, you notice some items which are not the remains of unfortunate creatures. A wealth of small bone and basalt idols crowd the floor around the doors. Though crude, they are
nonetheless worth 45 gp each to an academic or collector. You count about 20 of them. Additionally, you discover a partially charged wand among the refuse.
Items obtained:
20 stone and bone idols
1 wand of water breathing
The entrance to the maze stands before you. How do you wish to proceed?

Dunkel gives the morloch a long, disgusted look.
"Ach, got plenty o' these in th' tunnels we been diggin' up north."
He does give a nod to the wand, though.
"A wand o' breathin' water. Handy, that there."
Stretching his muscles, Dunkel hoists his axe and points to the maze while taking a couple steps towards it.
"Ah don't know how ye all are feelin' but we've pressed on this far?"
