Rowan abandoned her attempts to disarm the woman, who was clearly too skilled or enraged to be so easily rendered defenseless. So instead she focused on quick strikes with her compassionate mace Since she confused Compassionate with Merciful which will be the Next enchantment... and rained down several decidedly more accurate blows then before. However unused to the maces weight her swings were still wide...

Somewhat impressively, all attacks hit - though the barbarian woman didn't take quite as much damage as she should have had. She was naturally tough that way, it seemed, and brought her weapon around to strike at Rowan as the Paladin's blows rained down.

Julian's annoyance with this pest was growing and with his growing impatience his mutagen slipped further from his control. He snapped his teeth and grinded them as he struck out twice more with Einherjar, his mind barely focused enough to cast another spell. He pictured Desna's symbol and chose to brand the woman yet again as his anger grew.

His clawed hand grew more menacing as well as his mental stability slipped further from his control. As he settled into a defensive stance he spread his wings behind him and growled menacingly at the womans backside.

She takes the hit solidly in the shoulder, grunting loudly as she bit her lip. Though as soon as the blade is pulled free her injuries start to mend rapidly, though not completely healed she was better. She laid on hands for herself and raised her mace with a smile at the enraged woman. "A solid strike! Now its My TURN!" She spoke in celestial and brought her Compassionate Mace hammering down on her foe for what she hoped would be a solid hit. Though her second swing wasn't as effective as this time she choose a different more defensive fighting stance.

Anathya, it helps if you do things like Julian and Rowan do, clarifying what's going into each number on your rolls. ^^

Paladins in general could be pretty hard to hurt - as could the barbarian, it seemed, as somewhat fewer attacks hit her this time around. She was definitely getting fairly low on vitality - if you wanted to try and capture and interrogate her, you'd have to be careful here.

As a raging warrior, though, she didn't quite have that sort of compunction, and stepped over to slash at Anathya again.

Not... A ferociousness rose in him as the mutantagen reacted to his angered state, as combat drew out so did his ferocity and change. Good. His claws were beastial now and the teeth in his mouth were as ferocious as a demons.

Einherjar:

<:Focus on control, do not let your anger override your reason. Do not leave you companions to deal with the monster you continue to toy with Redeemed!:>

He exhaled through his sharpened teeth, a hot breath from his changing form as his eyes glared at his opponent. Einherjar's support was one of the few things that could help him break free of the rage that surged in his heart. So the blows he unleash this time were with the flat side of Einherjar, seeing the woman's battered state he sought to bring her low by battering her with less lethal means.

He swung twice more, casting again and focusing all his might in every blow, those that landed echoed with a resounding crack as his dexterous strikes bruised flesh...

Rowan presses the attack after Julian, though she chooses to bring the woman down without killing them preferably. Her wounds healed further as she slammed the handle of her mace into the woman stomach. Knocking the air out of her before following it up with a blow to the back of her legs and forcing them to kneel. She used the magic of her mace to ensure that she didn't kill her. If anything she was now an unconscious mess.

Once she achieved this she looks to her companion's, ready to halt further attacks. "That's enough, I want her alive. Even though she attacked us."

>GM says you can just describe without rolling
>Julian promptly rolls and works to hit as hard as he can

Heh.

Cumulatively, the blows were enough to bring the woman down (and pretty far unconscious, at that), and it was clear she wouldn't be waking up for quite some time without the application of magical healing.

(Her unconsciousness also made it easy to pry away her weapon - an obviously-enchanted adamantine greatsword - away from her.)

Holding her barrage of shots, Anathya watches the combat prowess of her new companions, finding herself considerably impressed. Juilian's attacks seemed to be getting more ad more violent, his demeanure more vicious, almost demonic in nature.

Taking a deep breath she stifles a knee-jerk reaction.

Trust. She sent you here for a reason.

He would bear watching.

By contrast Rowan was doing her damnedest not to kill her, skillfully putting her down.

"I don't know how much good she'll be when she wakes up but your call. Nice takedown.

Rowan nods to Anathya. "Thank you. It isn't easy to focuse more on mercy then wrath, not all are redeemable but that doesn't mean I blind myself to the hope that some still are." As Rowan speaks she disarms the woman, binds her hands and feet tightly before beginning to heal her. "You will understand when you meet our friend back at camp."

Setting the woman gently back on the ground on her side she spoke again. "It is my hope this fierce warrior may yet change. But be ready, she may not be done fighting us yet." Drawing out her wand she started using it to heal the wand, making sure to use only one charge at a time until they were conscious. When they finally came too she cupped her hand around her mouth tightly until she stopped struggling. "Stop Moving. This fight is over."

She released a wave of mythical power, enough to infuse her words so that her words would hopefully break the previously enraged womans anger down. Rowan was firm but not threatening in the way she spoke making it plain to anyone that what she said was truth. "Realize if we wanted you dead. You would be. However I want to talk to you. So I am going to remove my hand and if you shout I will gag you. Nod once if you understand." She lets the woman have enough slack to nod before tightening up again.

If she agrees:

Rowan is good to her word, though she doesn't remove the bindings on her hands. She kneels in front of the woman, though her face was stern she spoke in a calm manner. "I Am Rowan, servant of Iomedae. What is your name Warrior?"

As she waits for a response she uses her ability to detect evil and searches the woman's spirit...

If she continues struggling:

Rowan remains there, except she rolls onto her side and uses her free arm to grapple the woman and pin her to the floor. Keeping her mouth firmly covered as she tries to talk her down further.

As she falls Julian reins himself in, a physical effort to quell the inner fire as his Mutagen burns through him. Einherjar grounds him, gives him something to hold onto as he shakes his head and bites back another growl. When the rage finally clears he takes a step back and away from the woman and instead goes to take a look around the area they were in. "I'll take a look around. I am sure something heard this..."

Rowan shakes her head at Anathya. "I only know that she didn't understand Celestial, not surprising. I am hoping she speaks a more common language. Of which I know several, though in combat I am limited in what I can speak and understand also."

Even with the healing, the woman looked exhausted when she stirred - the cost Barbarians had to pay for their enormous strength. At Rowan's words, however, she nodded - the fight seemed to have gone out of her, and while she'd fought fiercely, she wasn't in that much of a hurry to die. "...Jestak." she said, clearly understanding the Common tongue.

There was an aura of evil on her, though not a particularly powerful one - which probably wasn't a surprise in this place. More to the point, people who weren't evil to begin with didn't need to be redeemed...

If she recognizes or realizes something she can use to help turn this woman to their side without blackmail/forcefully coercing her then Rowan will try and slip it into her words as she speaks. Not really guilt tripping but merely reminding them of a better path. That is if there is one.

She gives Jestak a nod, seeing her battered state Rowan leans forward and sets her hand on the woman. "Hold still a moment Jestak." She released a gentle pulse as she healed the woman with her own god given gift, letting Iomedae's divine healing flow through Jestak and strip away her fatigue. As the woman's injuries heal further and some of her fatigue hopefully melted away Rowan leaned back on her haunches so she could look her in the eye levelly instead of looking down on her. The woman fought hard and even though she attacked them, she deserved respect.

Her accent is probably Kellish - marking her as a member of the barbarian tribes that inhabit this region of the world. Three charges.

"I was assigned to guard this part of the fort. They failed to repulse that monster of a force you have outside." she said, nodding to the corpses. "I thought Staunton would be less angry if they received their punishment for failure from my own hands. He is... not a man to lightly cross."

Rowan's face was broken by disappointment, she regains her strong posture once more as she speaks. "Killing them yourself was a far better fate but it is a great waste. Staunton will eventually destroy you too. He will use you and caste you aside like these corpses. You have few options to appease him. Especially because I will not yield until Drezen falls to our forces or I die in the attempt."

She reaches for Jestak's feet then her intent unclear before she started to untie her feet. "Here are your options as I see them." She pulls the knot free, her eyes never lingering far from Jestak's as she spoke. "Go and tell Staunton, that we are coming." She stands, slowly moving behind Jestak, each movement measured as she watched the woman's movements as she laid out her next option. "You go home and live free somewhere far, far from here."

Diplomacy +MP: 1d20 + 17 + 1d6 ⇒ (18) + 17 + (5) = 40

Rowan kneels behind Jestak then, her voice becoming empowered once more. Enough to bring a shudder to the air as she spoke. "Or you can swear yourself to me and fight for our cause." At the last words the knot falls from Jestak's hands.

Rowan moves to stand beside the woman then, proffering her hand. "If you never lie to me, I'll never be disappointed with you. If you fail I won't punish you for it. If, after this fight is over, you feel I have failed you then you are free to leave at your leisure with my blessing. I ask only that you fight for our cause, abide by our code and give everything you have for victory. You need only take my hand and swear an oath to what little I have asked of you." She was sincere, her voice carrying the weight of a Paladin of Iomedae. The woman wasn't evil, she could be swayed, she could be brought to a better path, to fight for a cause that needs her. "Killing a woman of your strength is a waste and like Chimera Soltengrabbe I'd rather have you by my side then a corpse on the ground."

[I]That is the difference between Staunton and I. I will take every ally I can in this fight and when it comes time to let loose the dogs of war we will stand stronger then ever before. Please Iomedae let my words reach her, let her choose a new horizon instead of this pit.

'What the @#@% is she doing?' Anathya thinks to herself, watching the bizarre scenario unfold.

While she found it impossible to deny the overwhelming appeal of the slender yet powerful woman that seems to almost radiate light, setting the clearly dangerous woman loose to either attack or warn her master could only be folly. Still, she remains silent, moved to stillness by the moment, her mind ready to summon her weapon to her hand at the merest flicker of aggression from the barbarian woman facing the radiant paladin.

Julian watches Rowan, neither voice his opinion or displeasure while his mind recorded yet another scenario. He continues to watch their backs and what happens with the woman, happens. It may make things more difficult but Rowan was right. They would not stop. Not now.

Jestak's hand slowly tightened around her weapon. "...You beat me fairly, and anyone is better than Staunton." she said quietly. "I'll fight for you." She took up her weapon once more, sliding the massive tool into a sheath on her back - and she was fairly clearly willing to travel ahead, behind, or in the middle of the group, as you preferred. There was no sign of insincerity in her words - while she still looked somewhat nervous, she did seem genuinely interested in helping.

The real question was... where were you planning to go from here?

She nods raising her wand again. "You will not regret this Jestak and I am true to my word. I am taking my Homeland back and will repel these invaders as a Sarkorian should have from the beginning." As she spoke she touched everywhere she could see a wound on Jestak, using several more charges to bring Jestak back to full strength. "Now, I know I ask much of you but I must know what you know."

As she healed Jestak she asked her questions. "What more can you tell me about what lies within this place? are there others like you who would join us? And where are they from here?"

"We were not... encouraged... to learn too much about this place. North and to the right is the chapel, left is the armory. Janeamine has several crusaders with her in the chapel." Jestak answered, clearly still somewhat nervous. That wasn't likely to go away anytime soon - only time could solve some issues.

Anathya raises an eyebrow at that. More corrupt crusaders

In some ways they were worse than demons. Betrayers to the cause and the crusade. It was surely the act of traitors that led to the wardstones falling.

"Then we should let them know thier time here is over." she says with an almost feral grin.

Having healed Jestak's wounds, Rowan smiles at her before turning the wand on Anathya and then finally herself before putting it away. "Exxcellent information. In time you will come to trust us and until then we will learn together." She draws her sword then, her favored weapon as she looked to her companions. Starting with Jestak. "Stick close to me while we hold the center, once they see you I am sure you will be targeted. I will keep you on your feet and we can fight foes in pairs. Julian, lead us to the Chapel. Anathya Be ready with your crossbow's and watch our backs. I want to take the crusaders alive if possible, I hope they were not willing converts. Our primary target is this Janeamine but don't allow yourselves to be spread too thin."

Jestak doesn't seem to be holding things back - not maliciously, at any rate. At least advancing is easy enough, and it's a fairly short journey to the (unlocked) chapel.

Two rows of stone benches occupy face a raised dais to the north, on which stands a twelve-foot-tall statue of an armored woman with a sword and shield. Faded tapestries hang in tatters to either side, and a larger one on the south wall depicts the armored woman on bended knee before a man wearing green robes. Three smaller, human-sized statues of armored knights stand within small alcoves to the west, each holding a longsword pointing downward.

There's a sizzling sound and a burst of light as you step into the chamber. Lying on the floor, looking rather burnt, is the body of a succubus. Four dazed-looking men in the armor of crusaders are sitting in the seats of the church, and a rather familiar-looking woman is standing above the succubus' body, looking distinctly unimpressed by it. "...Ah, there you are." she said, looking up as you entered. "You've done very well thus far, crusaders - and you've more than earned your blessings. Come here so that I may bestow them upon you."

Anathya's eyes widen as she takes in the scene inside the chapel, a scene that made absolutely no sense. They were inside a fortress ruled by evil, and yet in here, a group of crusaders stood preparing to....kill a succubus?

Something about this felt...weird. And that woman.....having grown up in a crusader household Anathya knew Iomedae's likeness when she saw it. But this had to be a trick.

A golden glow emanating from her eyes, the hunter of the damned searches fro signs of the light in those before her.

...Detect Twice, Stab Once?

Rowan's ability to detect evil had barely started to go completely haywire when the figure of Iomedae exploded into motion, darting towards you - only to be knocked across the room as Jestak stepped forward and swung her blade like a bat. As the blow connected, the succubus on the ground vanished, and the figure in the room scowled.

"Get them!" she snarled, and the dead-eyed crusaders rose almost mechanically, drawing their weapons and turning to face you.

It really was over, too - normal crusaders would never have had a chance, but your own talent and weapons sufficed to strike the impostor and send her body crashing into the floor. As she did, her body rippled, momentarily revealing her natural succubus form before dispersing. As she hit the ground, the four crusaders collapsed, looking exhausted - and some of the color and vitality appeared to be returning to their bodies.

Julian whirled on the crusaders, looking at each of them warily before he could restrain the bloodthirsty side of his psyche once more. In irritation he clawed the place where the succubi's form had been before storming to the other side of the chapel in search of something else to do.

She didn't spare the succubi a glance, sheathing her sword and almost stepping on its back as its form dispersed into the ether. Her concerns were for the crusaders that had been under the foul creatures whims until now. "Are any of you injured?" Her voice was full of sincere concern, as she had been for Jestak, she was now hoping to ensure these weary warriors would survive as well.

She uses her ability to heal to remove any lingering fatigue as needed among them. Keeping track of her now dwindling resources. She heals any injuries they may have received while in their strange captivity.

Anathya's eyes widen slightly at the sight of Julian's efforts to restrain what seems to be an inherent bloodlust. While she herself wasn't really known for an excess of restraint, he seemed to struggle not to lay waste to those in front of him.

Ironically he seems in some ways touched by Ragathiel himself. He understands the rages at least.

Looking at the soldiers she keeps a close eye as Rowan heals them.

The men seemed less physically injured that mentally exhausted, and one of them groaned as Rowan focused some attention on him. "Aaaaaugh... what happened here?" he asked, blinking up at Rowan. His eyes went down to her holy symbol a moment later, and Jestak just blinked down at him as his wits slowly came back. "We were in the encampment outside... then brought into the chapel... Iomedae protected us for weeks, said she was rewarding our devotion..." he sounded more than a little confused.

Meanwhile, Julian was able to note a door hidden in the southern wall. Two statues stand midway into this room. They each depict an armored woman with her sword raised. Numerous smashed and empty chests sit on the floor.

Anathya:
As you watch Rowan talk to the men, a whisper-like question enters your mind. Why did you assume the crusaders here were traitors? Does your wrath go so far as to assume others are guilty based on the faintest scraps of evidence?

As her internal compass challenges her own assumptions, Anathya quietly takes in the scene around her. Shaking her head in an attempt to clear it, she looks up as Julian re-enters the room.

Looking to Rowan with the crusaders she moves towards the fiendish warrior. There would be plenty time for soul searching when the current dangers were dealt with.

Rowan's voice was filled with her resolve as she set a hand on the groggy Crusaders shoulder. "I hadn't noticed some had gone missing, in this I had failed you and here you were all deceived." She continued to see what she could do anything for them as she spoke. "Though it was by a seductress of the lowest order. However their kidnapping has turned out to be our boon, as we are in the middle of the Citadel and our strike has begun. If you are able I would like for you to carry on with us, guarding our backs as we continue headlong to the heart of this fallen fortress."

She looks over when she hears Julian speak of the hidden door, rising to her feet before she nods to Jestak and introduces her to these Crusaders. "This fine woman is Jestak, she has joined our cause and is to be treated with respect."

Is there a picture of Jestak? Or did I miss it... *Goes to check* >.>

I just didn't post her pic. XD

The crusaders nodded slowly, still working through the lingering aftereffects of the Succubus' mental manipulations. It wasn't at all clear what unit they'd been from - though they'd probably been taken from the main group of prisoners you'd rescued earlier.

Neither statue was interesting or relevant - but Anathya's careful searching found another hidden door to the west.

Ah-ha.

A metal rod on which hangs a magnificent banner depicting a sword before a sunburst is raised up in the hands of a statue of an armored woman to the north. Just south of the statue sits a gleaming alabaster altar. Another four statues flank the room, each wearing a real suit of metal armor, while to the south hangs a tattered red and gold tapestry.
