Misfortune (Su): The witch can cause a creature within 30 feet to suffer grave misfortune for 1 round. Anytime the creature makes an ability check, attack roll, saving throw, or skill check, it must roll twice and take the worse result. A Will save negates this hex. At 8th level and 16th level, the duration of this hex is extended by 1 round. This hex affects all rolls the target must make while it lasts. Whether or not the save is successful, a creature cannot be the target of this hex again for 1 day.

Elkin's laughter rises, charges with energy as he finally is able to call on his stormborn magic to attack the woman. A crackling, spherical storm cloud flies in whichever direction you point and deals electricity damage to those it strikes. It has a fly speed of 20 feet with perfect maneuverability. If it enters a space that contains a creature, the storm stops moving for the round and deals 3d6 points of electricity damage to that creature, though a successful Reflex save negates that damage. It provides concealment (20% miss chance) to anything within it, and its flickering light illuminates the same area a candle would.

The sphere moves as long as you actively direct it (as a move action for you); otherwise, it stays at rest and crackles with lightning. It can be moved by wind effects and counts as a Small creature for the purpose of determining how winds affect it. The sphere has no physical substance and cannot exert any force on corporeal creatures or objects. It disperses if it exceeds the spell's range.

Around you panels of blinking lights and machinery line the walls of this chamber, but the true spectacle here is the massive machine of metal that looms against the far wall on a ten-foot-high platform. Two immense cylinders of pulsing violet light throb at the machine's core, while above a thinner cylinder extends through the ceiling. Ladders to the north and south provide access to the machine's platform, while at the center, a smaller machine with several metal spikes protruding from its heart extends from the larger one. The entire room vibrates with a roaring thunder, and the air feels strangely alive, almost as if it were vibrating as well.

Giving it a thorough examination, James realizes that this reactor is in fact a priceless, immobile technological artifact known as a Fusion Reactor that has been continuously functioning ever since the Rain of Stars thousands of years ago. The cause of Torch’s namesake is in fact nothing more than the runoff of heat ventilated by the reactor; the sudden and random flare ups are likely some sort of fail-safe system to help regulate the reactor. However, currently, the power that is usually redirected to maintaining failsafes is currently being siphoned off by another artifact permanently built-in to the reactor; an integrated power transmitter, which seems to have lost its receiver. There is a guage on the side far into a red area. Turning back on the Torch requires this transmitter to either be shut down or destroyed, shutting off the transfer of power elsewhere and instead redirecting it back into the failsafe system as intended.

If the failsafe system is not turned back on, the entire reactor will explode in a matter of months, likely collapsing the entirety of Blackhill with it.

With time the party can figure out how to turn the transmitter off restoring the torch. This would have been a James thing most likely.

Elkin congratulates the team on their victory, and--while it may not be assisting, per se--stays close to James as he figures out the workings of the reactor and how it had been powering Torch.

"So if Torch has been using just the waste energy, what if we could find a way to harness this for Torch? Can you imagine?" He shakes his head, and slightly under his voice, concludes, "we can't let the Technic League find this."

That machine is amazing. Research needs to be done to figure out how to turn the Torch back on, and turn the power off. We need to learn more about this Hellion person or being. Channeling that much power somewhere else is big."

She nods in agreement with Elkin. "I agree the Technic League doesn't need to know about this. There' likely to try to take over the Torch and keep it for themselves."

"I agree we should study this machine to learn what it is and can do, but I also want to be sure we don't end up under the control of this Hellion thing." Xandar says looking at the machine in clear wonderment.

"Perhaps once Khonnir has recovered he can spend more time investigating the device. He would likely be the best-placed person to help Torch make the best use of the machine."

James will spend some time trying to discover how to turn off the transmitter. "I want to find out who has turned this on, and I expect they will be back. But for now, if we can get Torch back to normal daily life, I think we will have a lot of happy people."

James your investigation into the machine shows mostly what you had already learned. The power was going to a relay and then to a distant location probably near or in Scrapwall.

The power from the reactor is clearly what powers Torch and the flare ups are simply the blowing off of excess energy. From reading and some intuition you also find that there can be another bad byproduct, radiation, but that is not a problem with this reactor.

Beyond that you really do not have the context to work out how a starship functions.

With their task complete at last, the group pack up all of the new loot they’ve found and head back out of the complex. They talk the long hallway with direct access to the goblin lair back out, skipping the bulk of the ship.

As they make their way out of the caverns, through the toxic, murky water, they emerge to find a large portion of the town seemingly waiting for them to arrive, and are met with cheers. Behind them, IMAGE is a vortex of violet flame shooting up into the sky as far as the eye can see.

In front of the crowd stands Councilor Dolga Freddert, Councilor Joram Kyte and the slightly-drooling Councilor Khonnir Baine, all eager to greet and congratulate the group. Before they can get around to a debriefing, however, Thisstle explains that, on top of them fixing the Torch, they’ve also found a way to cure Baine’s condition.

The group wastes no time in taking Baine to the decontamination room found within the structure and, with a simple tap of a button, they find themselves subject to numerous scanning machines that examine them then engulf them in a fine white mist that almost seems to move of its own accord. It is explained that this is something Khonnir told them about in a moment of lucidity. Before they know it, the mist is gone and Khonnir’s condition has faded, his mind back to its original state.

Not long afterwards, the Council calls a meeting and invites the group to attend as part as debriefing, to award them their money, and to personally thank them for what they’ve done for the town. As the group enter the town hall where they first got the job, they find the entire council in attendance; Dolga, Khonnir Baine, Joram Kyte are all there, as well as two council members the group had yet to meet. The first is Bazlundi Otterbie, the granddaughter of Orm Otterbie, a former Mendev Crusader, sits at the end of the line of councilors, her well-muscled physique matching her status as owner of the Smithy’s Guild. The second is Serantha Olandir, the charismatic and influential leader of the town council. She seems to be still suffering from the chronic headaches that have been plaguing her since this debacle started, but nevertheless, they’ve apparently lessened enough for her to resume her duties on the council.

Curiously enough, already at the town hall before the rest of the group arrives is their previous member, Crystal, smiles broadly as the group arrives.

A council member you have not met speaks first. ”Our saviors,” she says, ”I did not have the honor of meeting you earlier this weekI am Bazlundi and I want to thank you on the behalf of our town for rekindling our hope and livelyhood. As promised, here is your reward.” She motions with her hand and a nearby assistant hauls over a small, albeit bulging sack filled with four-hundred silver disks, each worth ten gold. ”I have no doubt the rest of the town will be eager to thank you for your actions as well. “

Khonnir coughs and chimes in, ”Certainly! You all will always be welcome at the Foundry Tavern, not only for saving the town, but also for saving my life, my sanity, and from what I’ve heard from Val, my daughter. If you ever need use of my forge, you’re free to do so; I can also help with identifying any last technological items you’ve gathered from the ruins, if you have any to be identified. Since you’ve cleared the place of its dangers, I’m personally quite eager to examine it in further detail, but thats for another time and place. Oh, and of course, I’ll throw in free drinks any time you visit!”

”Hm yes, well, “ interjects the 2nd new council member, Serantha Olandir, ”Before we can let you go enjoy yourselves on what is likely going to be an exciting night of alcohol-induced revelry, I’d like to speak more about what specifically was causing this entire debacle so that we might be able to avoid a repeat occurrence in the future.” There is no need to RP this unless you want to.

At that, the five council members eagerly await the group's story of what happened down there.

James thanks everyone for their support, and especially his old friend, Khonnir, for leading the way. He goes on to relate the events of their journey, taking special note of the bad guys they faced, and warns there will be others.

He takes a few sad moments to recount the skulks, who were both friends and aid, and didn't deserve the fate that had befallen them.

Finally, he talks about how the Torch may be restored, but that there may be other ways to harness that power, and some further discussions should continue with regards to the dangers and the potentials.

"Now, about those drinks?"

Augar says little commenting here and there about things. He is in thought about Hellion. He had read it or heard of it before, the woman was drawing power from it and he was sure that it was the source.

Oh Red Box, I have not gotten the info for my super awesome Knowledge roll!

I had been wondering if anyone had noticed that.

"Oh my stars; Vedia, you're right! We completely forgot about him! When we go back in with the council to show them what we found, we need to pick him up. It will be a perfect time to deliver him into the council's hands, too."
