Alternate Paladin mounts

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

A friend of mine is starting a mid-level campaign and I am porting over a paladin I used in 3.5. To keep true to the character i am uswing the mount feature, however we were discussing a special mount as the character I'm porting already uses a special mount. We cannot find rules anywhere for special mounts. I am looking for some advice on how to create a special mount.

There aren't really rules for it in Pathfinder. Take a look at some of the rules for animal companions and see if your DM is ok with it. If I were taking a mount with my Paladin you can bet my DM and I would be talking about tigers, Rhino's and Elephants as possible mounts.

Bear in mind through that Lions and Tigers, for example, have a 7th level progression to large size so you may need to wait until at least then to get a really cool mount.

Special mounts as in 'non warhorse'? Because the paldins mount rules are in the Pathfinder book under Divine Bond.

I am going to assume you mean non standard mount, as in a mount like a griffon, hippogriff, pegasus, unicorn, giant eagle, dragonne or drakkensteed, for example.

I don't think Pathfinder itself has any rules or feats on this in general at this time, though it should be relatively easy to find creatures in the monster book that are on a rough par, power wise, with a heavy warhorse that your GM could allow as a Paladin mount.

If your asking about something better than a Hvy Warhorse equivalent than a very rough guide could be that for every feat spent on 'Better Paladin Mount' you can choose from a mount like creature that is 2 or maybe 3HD better than a Heavy Warhorse that your GM approves.

So 'Better Paladin Mount 1' could get you a 4 or 5 HD mount, which would then be modfied by the bonus' of your Paladin level as appropriate.

'Better Paladin mount 2' could get you a 6 or 7 HD mount and flying mounts would be choosable as well. Etcetera.

I know that in one of the old 3.5 books, Perhaps Book of Exalted Deeds or Champions of Light, you could spend a feat on 'Celestial Mount' or 'Divine Mount' and it would add the either celestial or half celestial template to your Paladin Mount (don't remember the exact name). That could be an option as well.

And I beleieve there was also a 'Draconic Mount' option in either Races of the Dragon or the Draconomicon.

Hopes this helps you.

The bonus Bestiary has the Dragonne. You could use that as a guide.
