Serge watches the cloud of poisonous goop spill from the creatures' body unexpectedly, his jaw dropping. He cringes as he steps around Frankie's vomit pile, giving the child a sympathetic pat. "Don't worry, we'll have these taken care of fast enough. Just pretend you ate some bad candy."

Serge takes a deep breath and attempts to hold it in as he steps into the cloud, stopping just next to Jan.

Season of Ghosts

Though Denair resists this second spray of spores Frankie isn't quite as lucky this time. He inhales some of the spores despite his best efforts and instantly feels his stomach start to roil and churn in response. Even worse, the inhaled spores begin to attack his muscles...

...and sap his strength. He wisely opts to get out of the cloud as quickly as possible but not before leaving a parting gift in the form of a pool of vomit on the floor. On the bright side, as soon as he steps out of the cloud the nauseated feeling begins to lift.

Roughly at the same time that Frankie is on his way out of the room Serge is on his way in, taking a deep breath before stepping into the cloud. This actually seems to offer some protection from the spores and he's able to reach Jan's side without getting sick - or being attacked by the ascomoid.

While Jan shrugs off the second wave of nausea, Lazarus and Quang Chi continue to focus fire on Red Ascomoid. Lazarus' missile burns another small hole into it and then the archer unleashes a truly impressive hail of arrows. The first misses but the second pierces cleanly through Red and the whole puffball just sort of collapses in a puff of spores! And as it does, the first stinky spore cloud also disperses and makes the immediate area a little less hazardous.

Quang Chi then quickly redirects the next several shots to Blue, peppering it with arrows and leaving it looking in pretty sorry shape...

With a mighty cry Meredith delivers a fearsome stab with her longspear, driving it deeply into the Blue Ascomoid. Just like before, the mass of fungus quivers for a moment and then collapses in on itself with a soft *poof*. This happens just as Denair makes another swing and leaves the eidolon striking nothing but empty air.

Combat Over!

Seconds later the second spore cloud dissipates, leaving the air in the room clear and safely breathable once more.

With a huff, Serge exhales and starts panting. "Whew, I'm glad I did not succumb to those poisonous fumes. Are the rest of you feeling okay?" He glances over at Frankie.

When Meredith skewers the last puffball out of existence, Quang Chi slowly lowers his left hand and the bow to his side. He enters the ancient archery range with an attitude of reverence and awe, sweeping his gaze across the room as he admires both the similarities and differences to the ones he has long trained on. He initially walks slowly, taking it all in, but then moves with purpose toward the weapons and ammunition racks.

Bow in hand, he reaches just the thumb of his occupied left hand to the jade wayfinder attached to the lower strap of his quiver and rubs the engraving on the back tenderly.

Satisfied with what his eyes can see, (or not see) he waves his right hand toward the racks looking for any magical auras amongst them.

I still struggle with these spells. I'm sure Meredith and Lazarus and even Jan can do this in their sleep, but it is still so new to me. What am I seeing, exactly?

This is his first adventure since taking his first level of Hunter and gaining spells, so I'm letting him work thru some unfamiliarity with this and some of his other new Hunter class powers.

Once the room is clear, Lazarus follows his friends inside and, with Desna's guidance, begins looking for magical auras and attempting to identify them.

Frankie wipes the puke from his face with his sleeve, wrinkling his nose as he still smells it. He takes a small drink of cocoa to rinse out his mouth and blows his nose to clear the leftover chunks of gummy bears that lodged up there.

"I'm ok, I think. Candy doesn't taste as good on the way out as on the way in." He skips on into the room, doing his best to race the others to the most interesting thing: the weapons! "Look at this stuff!" He shouts with glee, almost forgetting where they are.

With the archery range free of the rolling ascomoids you're finally able to look around a bit more. Understandably, most of the attention shifts to the racks lining the walls and both Quang Chi and Lazarus set about scanning them and the rest of the room for magical auras.

In a rather disappointing state of affairs, there don't seem to be any save for the arcane mark that glows atop the raised platform on the northern end of the room. Further examination reveals the aura to be illusion in nature.

Use Magic Device (DC 15) *or* Spellcraft (DC 19):

Inscribed into the arcane mark is an activation phrase and you're fairly certain that speaking it will conjure illusory targets to shoot at.

Other than the arcane mark and the strange wind effect that Lazarus managed to shut off earlier, there's unfortunately little left to see inside the range even after all of you give the entire space a very detailed and thorough investigation. What weapons and projectiles that might have once been stored here have long since been stolen or deteriorated to the point of being unusable and it seems as though the facilities haven't been used in years, perhaps centuries.

But there are still many paths yet to be explored that branch off of the entry hall as well as the passage that leads out of the archery range and to the west. Of note, Frankie and anyone else who ventures close to this western passage can hear the sounds of splashing water from somewhere nearby.

Denair unhooks herself from the ceiling and casts Prestidigitation on Frankie to help him clean up. "Did that rude spore cloud get to you, Frankie? It's okay now. The Boss tore right into it. Yay!" She claps and the sound of wood slapping against itself reverberates.

"Good eye, Meredith."

"Well, it seems we have a few options to consider for further exploration. We could follow the sounds of splashing water along the west wall, since we're already here," Lazarus suggests.

"But I still want to investigate that shrine," the wizard-priest adds, "before we leave this place."

Serge looks at Lazarus, then he looks back in the direction of the splashing. He nods, gripping his greatsword tightly. "The splashing could be anything. An angry whale? A dominated dolphin? Or perhaps just a waterfall," he says, walking towards the splashing. "Either way, we should investigate it first."

An angry whale? Under these mountains? I suppose anything is possible.... Quang Chi thinks to himself as he tries to determine if Serge is being serious or just joking around.

When Jan seconds the motion to investigate the splashing, the bald monk nods once in agreement and moves to his position in the marching order.

Intrigued by the sounds of splashing water nearby it's quickly decided to investigate further, though Lazarus is also sure to remind the group that the shrine bears further inspection at some point as well.

With the western passage out of the archery range being narrower you're forced to fall into single-file formation, with Denair and Frankie taking the lead to scout ahead for danger. As Lazarus' dancing lights float ahead and illuminate the hallway it seems that the samsaran might get his wish to explore the shrine sooner than anticipated, for all of you can see that the passage continues west for roughly 30 feet before opening up into that same shrine.

Of more immediate interest is the passage branching south, located roughly halfway down this hall and from where the sounds of splashing water seem to emanate. As the coast has been clear up to this point, Denair & Frankie carefully creep into this southern passage while the rest of you wait. The stealthy duo find that this passage only runs a few feet before turning and terminating in a set of stone steps that lead into a pool of water.

Warm, steamy water splashes down into the center of this small pool, which appears to be about 5 feet deep. A set of stairs leads down into the water and both Denair and Frankie see a single word scratched upon the nearby wall: 交换

Both of them are also quick to spot the glimmer of something at the bottom of the pool.

As Frankie and Denair play their game to see who gets wet, Lazarus follows into the small chamber to examine the writing on the wall. About the time that Frankie 'wins' and cautiously dips his finger into the water, Lazarus speaks the command word and the warm water pouring into the pool grows cool.

Huh. It's a glorified hot-cold switch!

More importantly, nothing comes up out of the pool to eat Frankie when he sticks his hand in it. And while Lazarus can't quite tell what it is that glimmers at the bottom, Frankie is able to determine that it looks to be a gem of some sort.

But before the child or anyone else can go into the pool after it, Lazarus insists on attempting to determine what sort of a gem it might be. His magical scanning detects several auras in the small chamber; one within the pool of water and two that seem to be emanating from the water itself. It doesn’t take him long to determine that the two weaker auras are those of Create Water and Purify Food & Drink spells. The other aura is stronger and seems to be necromantic in nature and emanates from the gem.

With the water now deemed safe, Frankie has no trouble wading into the pool - though he might appreciate having the hot water switched back on first! Either way, he quickly emerges with an imperfect, rose-tinted gemstone that resembles a teardrop - or a broken heart, depending on which angle you're looking at it from.

Quang Chi moves just past the steps to the pool to cover his teammates while they explore. As he does, he hears the discussion of hot and cold magical swapping.

"It is a magical onsen. A traditional hot and cold bath of Minkai," he explains, impressed by the ingenuity and also by the inclusion of such an element here.

When Lazarus fails to identify the gem, the humble monk asks to give it a try. He turns the stone over in his right hand and focuses on the aura it exudes.

If a master of the mystic arts like Lazarus was unable to figure it out, I doubt I can either. But perhaps I can learn from the effort, he thinks as he rubs his wayfinder and asks Tsukiyo for a little guidance.

"As I expected, I am also unable to identify it," he admits as he passes it to whomever wishes to try next. He then returns to his spot in the hallway watching down toward the shrine.

The gem brightens up a bit. "Anyone has a pouch to store this in? If you get hurt, reach down and grab it to heal yourself. Speaking of... Lazarus, can you use my wand?"

Once Denair learns what the pool is, she goes right in and begins soaking, letting her leafy hair flow around the room. "Oh, it's so relaxing..."

Frankie's rock clobbers Denair's scissors twice and he's off into the pool! He gives the others a funny look when the water temperature changes "Weird. I like the warm one better. I took enough cold baths in one lifetime." He grumbles at the memories of Mom tossing him into that fountain after dark for his weekly bath. At least it helped him learn to swim, some.

Once the others figure out the sparkly gem, Frankie gives Denny a splash then climbs out and wrings a bit of water out of his clothes, puts his backpack back on, then fixes his hair.

"Ok, onward to more fun stuff!" He sneaks off ahead to see what awaits.

Serge steps away from the hot-cold bath, still cringing at Frankie's remark, but it wasn't as if he was about to tell him.

He stops just short of Quang Chi. "You are quite knowledgeable in traditions of the east, as I might expect," the paladin says. "Why would such a bath be in a place like this, I wonder? Certainly not a natural feature."

Quang Chi turns his head just enough to reply to the paladin behind him, but keeps his eyes firmly fixed ahead on the corridor and Frankie.

"I wonder about that also. In Minkai onsen are used for relaxation - especially after exercise or battle."

And I've heard stories of other uses, but I do not think a holy paladin wishes to hear of those....

"An archery range and onsen do not belong in a tomb. I can only think maybe the samurai used this as a fortress before."

Not particularly worried at the moment about anything creeping up, Denair and Frankie (after drying off) proceed further down the western corridor while the rest of the group has an entertaining discussion about the facilities and even some possible improvements that could be made on such a place.

As expected, the duo don't have to go very far before the passage opens up into the very shrine that Lazarus was hoping to have a closer look at. These humble shrines must have provided the crusaders with a place to worship and give offerings. Each shrine features a small altar, religious carvings, and a shelf for holy books. From north to south, the shrines are dedicated to Aroden, Sarenrae, Torag, and Shizuru.

Though no one - Lazarus, Meredith, or Quang Chi - detect any magical auras as the group begins to filter into the shrine, everyone but Serge and Meredith spot a discarded piece of vellum near the shrine to Shizuru. It appears to be very fragile and will require some finesse to handle it without the entire thing crumbling.

Make a Disable Device or Sleight of Hand check to retrieve and examine the piece of vellum; magics such as Mending will also work.

Spotting the discarded piece of vellum near the shrine to Shizuru, Lazarus takes a look at it. Unwilling to risk damaging the fragile document, he uses prestidigitation to gently adjust it, hoping to see something.

Quang Chi removes his boots as he enters Shizuru's shrine and begins neatening it. He dusts the statue of the sun goddess and returns several small things to their appointed places. He lights the last stub of incense in the brazier, bows, and claps twice before silently saying a prayer to her.

My Lady, please guard and guide this humble servant of your Lover. This place and the samurai who dwelt here honored you. Now we would honor them and you again by cleansing it and returning it to its purpose. My new brethren are not samurai, they do not follow the code of ichimeiyo, but they are noble and good warriors nonetheless. Please protect us.

He reverently backs away from the shrine, laces up his boots, and bows out.

As he returns to the hallway, he notes the other gods honored here.

"A dead god, a goddess of the desert, a dwarf, and a foreigner. Balanced between two male and two female. The samurai brought Shizuru with them, but why each of the others?"

After a respectful silence while Quang Chi pays his own homage, Lazarus offers a small sacrifice at each of the shrines to Aroden, Sarenrae, Torag, and Shizuru.

With Frankie proving too distracted in his search for ancient candy to be of much help Lazarus makes use of Prestidigitation to gently flip the fragile piece of vellum over...and it seems to work! Careful inspection of the vellum reveals a partial account of a holy ritual...which seems to tie in with the discoveries that you made earlier inside the samurai's tomb.

Quang Chi offers a very sincere and heartfelt prayer at the shrine of Shizuru and then Lazarus offers his respects to all four shrines, making a small sacrificial donation to each. As this happens everyone, especially Quang Chi and Lazarus, feel the atmosphere within the underground fortress begin to shift a little, the air become less oppressive and the shadows a little less dark.

And then, the feeling that someone, or something, somewhere, is pleased with your efforts.

"Woah did you feel that? Was it an earthquake?" Frankie looks a bit excited at the prospect of seeing his very first earthquake. He peeks his head back into the rooms with the shrines, wondering what everyone's doing.

"Find anything neat? How come Desna doesn't have a room? I thought she was super popular?" He double checks the symbol tucked into his clothes to make sure it doesn't match any of the shrines.

"I've heard of places like this in Leng and the world of Cthulu, vast rooms filled with sweaty fanatics paying exorbitant sums of gold to engage in orgiastic rituals of self-flagellation and other masochistic rites."
