GM Kamro |
Two of Ziranu's arrows, the first and last, find their marks. He appears to take full damage - if he has any resistance or immunity, it's not to acid
The skeletal knight's mount charges forward, attempting to run Searok right over.
Overrun: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (8) + 14 = 22
Fails, so Searok successfully blocks the charge. It has the Trample combat feat, so it gets a hoof attack on him.
Hoof: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (9) + 12 = 211d6 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
Additionally, the mount exhales a cone of noxious smoke over the dwarf, concealing both mount and rider from the rest of you.
Searok, please make a DC 16 fort save to avoid being sickened by the smoke. For the rest of you, the area marked on the map now grants concealment.
The knight himself attempts to jab Searok with his lance. No +2 to the roll, since Searok blocked the charge.
Lance: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (12) + 18 = 301d8 + 10 ⇒ (2) + 10 = 12
20% miss chance on that, since Searok is now concealed by smoke, high is good for roller
Miss chance: 1d5 ⇒ 3
Asyra curses as the smoke blocks her sight. She readies her chain and moves up to the edge of it, ready to attack when a chance presents itself.
Double move, since she's too far to move and reach with her chain.
Tronar's up, followed by Shaeda, and then Anastasia's action will fire.
Shaeda Stormborn |
GM,
It would appear that Ziranu failed to account for Haste. His second attack would get a +1, and hit AC 26. Not sure if that hits.
His Hasted attack:
Manyshot-Rapid Shot-Deadly Aim-Enhanced Longbow Hasted Attack against Undead: 1d20 + 13 + 6 + 2 + 3 + 1 + 1 - 2 - 4 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 13 + 6 + 2 + 3 + 1 + 1 - 2 - 4 + 1 = 35
Hasted Attack Damage: 1d8 + 1d6 + 8 + 2 + 2 + 3 + 2d6 ⇒ (2) + (6) + 8 + 2 + 2 + 3 + (1, 5) = 29
I used all of his numbers, just added a +1 to hit.
Tronar HanFrum |
@gm does our life bubble protect from the breath or does it bypass that?
Tronar's previous action is his most impactful action and takes some time to improve his situation. He casts fly upon himself (with the extend rod) and then maneuvers around the fog to get behind the target.
GM Kamro |
The Nightmare has reach, so Shaeda's movement will provoke a (probably futile) AOO.
Bite: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (4) + 12 = 161d4 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
Misses.
Anastasia casts her spell on the skeletal knight.
Fort: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (5) + 11 = 16
Since he has the Skeletal Champion template, I'd say the +50% definitely applies, he's basically all bone
Anastasia's spell creates a sound like the splintering of a tree struck by lightning, and the warrior screams as a thousand cracks appear all over the surface of his body, before falling apart. His armor falls sideways off his mount, still gripping his lance, and hits the bridge.
The mount however, fights on.
Sial will move up to join Asyra and cast Bull's Strength on her.
Laori takes advantage of Haste to zip forward and swing at the monster with her chain.
Hasted Spiked Chain: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (16) + 13 = 292d4 + 6 ⇒ (1, 2) + 6 = 9
She hits.
Searok's up
Searok Ironbeard |
Do I have to roll a 20% miss chance on the horse?
Bah! I told ye that ye wouldn't pass! Searok shouts to the falling knight.
Attack 1: 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (16) + 20 = 36
Attack 2: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (12) + 15 = 27
Attack 3: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (4) + 10 = 14
Damage 1: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14 + Electrical: 1d6 ⇒ 6
Damage 2: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10 + Electrical: 1d6 ⇒ 2
Damage 3: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14 + Electrical: 1d6 ⇒ 2
Shaeda Stormborn |
Searok's hasted attack...
Attack Haste: 1d20 + 20 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 20 + 1 = 25
Damage Haste: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12 + Electrical: 1d6 ⇒ 6
Miss Chance: 1d5 ⇒ 1
Missed
Ziranu Barova |
Ziranu stands his ground, adjusting his green-hued barrage to what he presumes is an evil outsider serving as the undead knight's mount, an even more "favored" enemy of the Ranger...
Manyshot-Rapid Shot-Deadly Aim-Haste-Enhanced Longbow Attack 1 against Evil Outsider: 1d20 + 13 + 6 + 4 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 - 2 - 4 ⇒ (16) + 13 + 6 + 4 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 - 2 - 4 = 37
Attack 1 Damage: 2d8 + 2d6 + 16 + 8 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (6, 5) + (2, 5) + 16 + 8 + 4 + 2 = 48
Rapid Shot-Deadly Aim-Haste-Enhanced Longbow Attack 2 against Evil Outsider: 1d20 + 8 + 6 + 4 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 - 2 - 4 ⇒ (17) + 8 + 6 + 4 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 - 2 - 4 = 33
Attack 2 Damage: 1d8 + 1d6 + 8 + 4 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (6) + (4) + 8 + 4 + 2 + 1 = 25
Rapid Shot-Deadly Aim-Haste-Enhanced Longbow Attack 3 against Evil Outsider: 1d20 + 3 + 6 + 4 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 - 2 - 4 ⇒ (6) + 3 + 6 + 4 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 - 2 - 4 = 17
Attack 3 Damage: 1d8 + 1d6 + 8 + 4 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (1) + (2) + 8 + 4 + 2 + 1 = 18
Rapid Shot-Deadly Aim-Haste-Enhanced Longbow Attack 4 against Evil Outsider: 1d20 + 13 + 6 + 4 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 - 2 - 4 ⇒ (12) + 13 + 6 + 4 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 - 2 - 4 = 33
Attack 4 Damage: 1d8 + 1d6 + 8 + 4 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (1) + (3) + 8 + 4 + 2 + 1 = 19
Haste Bonus-Rapid Shot-Deadly Aim-Haste-Enhanced Longbow Attack 5 against Evil Outsider: 1d20 + 13 + 6 + 4 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 - 2 - 4 ⇒ (14) + 13 + 6 + 4 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 - 2 - 4 = 35
Attack 5 Damage: 1d8 + 1d6 + 8 + 4 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (1) + (2) + 8 + 4 + 2 + 1 = 18
Ziranu Barova |
As Tronar has noted elsewhere, I should mention that my Improved Precise Shot is applicable here, negating the miss chance effects of any concealment less than total concealment. Thanks!
Ziranu Barova |
Ziranu will carefully move forward, then once reaching the remains of the undead knight will take the magic full plate apart and stow both it and the buckler in Shaeda's Bag of Holding, when she's ready. The Ranger will retain the magic lance, carrying it to prospectively interact with areas ahead of him somewhat more safely.
Once complete, Ziranu will carefully study the iron portcullis and the surrounding stonework above and flanking it for locks, traps, and other potential threats.
Perception: 1d20 + 20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 20 + 2 = 32, +2 more if dealing with undead, +6 more if trapfinding is applicable.
Anastasia Shoi'Ming |
Anastasia will wait and see how things develop.
“You are an effective group!“ she says after witnessing them for the first time in combat.
Ziranu Barova |
Ziranu considers the barrier a few seconds longer, then shakes his head.
"Zhe portcullis does not seem trapped, but I'm zhinking zhat we want to damage it in such a way zhat it does not become a trap for us, in turn, if we're trying to escape zhis place. Anyone able to break zhese bars to give us passage to zhe gate beyond?"
Searok Ironbeard |
”you know, you only ever get your butt kicked when you get too far away from me, right?”
Yeah, but he said I couldn't pass an' I just wanted to prove him wrong!
Searok is ready to smash the gate with whatever weapon people think will work.
Anastasia Shoi'Ming |
Anastasia continues to wait.
“I am not experienced in breaking and entering. So I’ll be patient!“ she says.
Tronar HanFrum |
Tronar suggests "Or I can scout the other side for the simple lever that will open the portcullis? hmmmmm?"
And with that, Tronar will dimension slide to a point on the other side of the portcullis and search for the operating mechanism while maintaining his invisibility.
perception: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (2) + 13 = 15 hopefully it is fairly obvious or I may be here a while :)
GM Kamro |
There isn't a lever, but there is a chain to pull. It takes all of his weight, but Tronar is able to raise the portcullis a few feet and get everyone to pass through.
Rows of arrow slits line the eastern and western walls of this hallway, and murder holes look down from above. Lining the length of the corridor are dozens of orc skeletons and scattered bones, many still clad in damaged pieces of armor and clinging to rusted weapons. Clearly the remnants of one of the orcs of Belkzen's attempts to claim the castle before they settled for simply containing it.
To the north a door leading further into this floor, to the west and east are stairs leading up.
Ziranu Barova |
From the map, I take it that the stairs are on the other side of the eastern and western walls, and thus visible only through the arrow slit rows?
Even more suspicious now, with apparent threats on both sides and above the passage ahead, Ziranu will again carefully study the arrow slits, murder holes, and the surrounding stonework for traps and other hidden threats, as well as the scattered corpses.
Perception: 1d20 + 20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 20 + 2 = 40, +2 more if dealing with undead, +6 more if trapfinding is applicable.
GM Kamro |
Correct, presumably there's a way down here from upstairs, and castle defenders would use it to guard the entrance with bows and spears.
Ziranu finds a trap. The northern door has a hidden rune on it. It looks like all it does is cast Mage Hand if disturbed, but on closer inspection it appears to have been rigged to pull out a small peg on the ceiling. Examining the peg reveals it would have upended a trough of some sort of freezing oil on anyone trying to head north.
Tronar HanFrum |
"Since there is undoubtedly undead throughout this whole place, does someone want to scan ahead and see if those dead bodies are going to stay dead before we move into disarm the trap?"
Anastasia Shoi'Ming |
”Of course I can do that!“
Anastasia nods and follows Tronar’s instructions.
She casts detect undead and scans the area.
13 min duration.
GM Kamro |
Approaching the door to the north, Anastasia's Undead Detection abilities go off. There's something behind that door.
Listening carefully, you can hear a vague clattering on the other side. Possibly a battle of some sort, with weaponry hitting shields and armor, but it has none of the fever pitch of a fight to the death, and is more like a constant, almost mechanical rhythm.
Anastasia Shoi'Ming |
Kn religion : 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (4) + 15 = 19
“Hmm … definitely undead per the spell but what could it be?“
Ziranu Barova |
"Tronar, is zhis perhaps worzh a use of your dimension sliding to invisibly recon zhe source of zhis great undead power beyond zhe door? If not, zhe direct approach seems our only ozher option at present, given zhe constricting terrain..."
Tronar HanFrum |
”I would think that one of you that are in the small group should have the undead invisible spell instead of I. Once you are invisible to what is on the other side we can peer in to make our plans. And if we haven’t spent too much time since the bridge debating , let me remind you that we may have a few more seconds of magical speed!”
we had 13 rds of haste and hopefully we haven’t spent it all just speaking …. Tronar was trying to push the group to move quickly through the gate and get to the door
GM Kamro |
I took a look through Laori and Sial's spell lists to see if they have any services they should offer, but nothing jumped out as obvious, so I decided that since you are allies right now, I should just link their stat blocks and let you decide if they can be helpful to your current or future plans. This is a gigantic dungeon, so having a couple of extra NPCs with piles of spells at your disposal should help keep you from exhausting your resources too quickly.
Shaeda Stormborn |
Those guys have some great spells, and useful tricks!
Shaeda casts hide from undead on everyone but Tronar, and reminds them not to channel, turn, attack, touch, or otherwise affect the undead, until we're ready. "Oh, and if it has a mind, it may see right through the spell completely."
Ziranu Barova |
With the spell preparation complete, Ziranu will advance to the door before the company and assess it for threats, before stepping to the side...
Perception: 1d20 + 20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 20 + 2 = 23, +2 more if dealing with undead, +6 more if trapfinding is applicable.
