About Ziranu Barova

Ziranu was born to a family of Varisian nomads, the traveling Barova Clan, wandering the face of Avistan, and particularly the ancient Varisian homeland, in their brilliant wagons. His childhood was short-lived, however, as his clan was attacked and murdered by Hell-backed Chelish marauders somewhere in the wilds of southeastern Varisia, in apparent revenge for a slight never known to him. Ziranu was the sole survivor of the massacre, through some great fortune or foreshadowing mastery of the gift of stealth, with the only ties to his Barovan lineage found in the charred and tattered remains of his kapenia.

Ziranu’s, innate perceptiveness, skills, and focused anger enabled his survival, and tracked his path in the years ahead to the city of Korvosa, the city at the edge of Varisia that was the source of the Chelish incursion. He fell in and honed his capabilities with the company of other outsiders, at first surviving, and then thriving, as he mastered the urban intricacies of the Korvosan metropolis. Ziranu never did track the killers of the Barova Clan to take justice into his own hands, but remains ever-watchful for any trace of Barovan plunder or the blood-stained hands of the guilty.

In the interim, the mastery of his ranger’s skills in, above, and beneath the streets of Korvosa has enabled him to find some grim satisfaction, and even some small wealth, in pursuing the worthy causes of others, in the “hunting of man,” and the finding, capturing, or other needed end-state of that pursuit, with the bounty that follows. While Ziranu has grown in his nuanced understanding of the darkness that can be hidden in the hearts of all peoples, his favored causes admittedly include those of Varisians with nowhere left to turn, or those that invariably target the sins of Chelish transgressors, or their Hell-backed masters.

One such cause, the plight of a young Varisian woman in the chaos and crisis of Korvosa’s Blood Veil plague, led Ziranu to the ominous threshold of the Queen’s Physicians, and the dire revelations that awaited him within…
