GM Iron-Dice RoTL AE Campaign

Welcome adventurers!

I am recruiting five adventuring types seeking to shed their mundane life in Sandpoint for the heroes journey known as Rise of the Runelords.
The party will total five PC's.
I already have a commitment from:
Half-Elf Ranger - Female (Alaren, 2nd post below)

Four other spots are open.

Character guidelines:

  • 20 point buy
  • 1st Level
  • Average Gold
  • 3 Traits (1 Campaign)
  • Fast exp. advancement
  • Core races and class's are preferred.
  • Core and APG mostly.
  • Most Golarion books (___ of Golarion, Adventurer's Armory, Inner Sea Guide, etc))
  • Other material may be considered on an individual basis.

Getting Started:

The anniversary edition RotRL players guide has a lot of good hooks and traits to bond the party members to Sandpoint and perhaps each other. Please incorporate one of these or create your own as you see fit.

What I like to see:

  • A character that feels alive, with a short backstory and a physical description. Characters should have a good balance between enough info to guide the beginning of the story, and general enough to develop and evolve along the way.

  • A reason for being in Sandpoint - presumably related to the Swallowtail festival, but not necessarily! (Chance, Local, Religious Leanings, etc.)

  • I’m looking for players who enjoy cinematic combats and creating interesting descriptions and dialogue.

On PbP specific rules. I generally keep close to the core rules on gameplay. Some items I find speed up a PbP game, like having the GM roll initiative and create and average for the Pc’s and creatures can save an entire day (or more) of posting.

    Enough rambling by me!
    Let’s here from you adventuring types . . .

  • Dairkal has been trying to get into a RotRL for a long time now. He was in one on another site that died shortly after an encounter with goblins(I know nothing of the AP other than the basics. We were on the road to some house and were ambushed...I think).

I think I need to change his stats slightly, and add in my traits. Also, he has an alternate racial trait for ARG. I hope it's ok. Its listed in his profile for ease.

I would like to present Alaren for Consideration.

Alaren has lived in Varisia most of her life. She lost \ both of her parents while she was young and threw herself into studying. (Her Mother was an Elf and her Father was Human.)
Alaren's main interest of study was the lost Thassilon Empire, so much in fact that she has been able to piece together the language and a partial history.

She has found herself in Sandpoint for supplies on her way to a local area to explore it's connection to the Thassilon Empire, and has decided to stay for the Swallowtail Festival.

    Hey Dairkal,

Your PC really connects with me. I also played a halfling rogue in a RotRL game that died near the same point as you described. The backstory is great, and the trait from ARG is fine as well. In fact, I thing it's just an updated version from the Halflings of Golarion book.

I find it amusing that Dair worked as a juggler, since I made a living doing that in RL for many, many years.

All things considered, all that's left to say is "Welcome aboard!"

Oh me me me pick me! Raises his hand and says again, "pick me".

Man its hard finding a bread and butter core campaign lately. I've been looking the recruitment threads for almost 2 weeks now and every single one is "epic level" or "homebrew" or they've rewritten the entire core book with things like no armor class, no skills, no experience points, and so on. I've started the RoTRL path once before but never finished it. Please consider my application.

I will adjust Krallek as need be if accepted. He was made for a different campaign that never left the ground.

Ensu is an old character I had to pull out of a Rise of the Runelords game a while back when life get a bit hectic. I will make adjustments later tonight.

    Grand Lodge

    Hello!

I'm quite interested in PbP, but have never done it before. I once saw a guide here, explaining what types of fonts to use for what, but didn't save the link. -.- I'm a quick learner, though.

RotRL is a campaign I'm very interested in, but I should probably mention that I already read half of the Skinsaw-Murders book and peeked into some of the others. I'm very confident I'll be able to separate player knowledge and character knowledge, but I thought I should mention it.

As for the character: for the 15 years or so of RPG experience I have, I was almost always the GM. When I do get the chance to play a PC, I tend to play whatever benefits the group. I think I'm rather good at coming up with character concepts, but it's not like I have this one idea that I absolutely have to play right now. Is that a good or a bad thing?

If you still haven't ruled me out, I'd like to know what kind of activity you expect from us. I do have a job and posting 3 times a day on weekdays, more on weekends, is just not going to happen and I wouldn't want to keep you all from enjoying this at the pace you prefer. :)

    Ok, I'm interested :)

This is the character background I'd like to use, but I haven't decided what class to go yet, Samurai, Fighter or Monk.

I'd welcome any thoughts or input. :)

Interested. I will be working on either a cleric or an inquisitor.

I'd certainly be interested in playing!

Haley was only 13 when the old temple in Sandpoint was razed in a mysterious fire and she has been struggling with her guilt ever since.

She isn't sure when her fascination with fire began, it was certainly before the magic in her blood manifested and she nearly burnt her own family's home down, but she has always been infatuated with the flame.

When the dark events of the Late Unpleasantness struck Sandpoint, Haley's parents packed up their meager belongings and prepared to move to Magnimar for both protection and a hope at finding a tutor to help their daughter control her power. As their wagon pulled away from the city, Haley could see the flames devour the temple of Desna and she felt both shame and excitement as she watched it burn. While she had nothing to do with the fire- she was elated to see it rise even above the might of a God.

As a sorcerer who has come into her own, and with her 18th birthday just weeks past, Haley has returned to Sandpoint to take part in the Swallowtail festival. While she told her parents that this was just a short journey to visit the land of her childhood, Haley has truly come to see the new Temple revealed and the hope it should bring Sandpoint. Perhaps then she can find balance between the fires of her own passions and ambitions.

Wow, thanks! Dair is one of the earliest PCs I ever made for an online game, so I'm glad to see he's well received.

    Question:

Is this Religious trait ok? You said anything from the Golarion books should be fine, but since this requires a bit of extra work from the GM, I figured I would ask before taking it.

    Good Dreams

Let's move this over to the discussion thread. I just made it, so the link should show up at the top of this page soon.

Got an idea for a half-orc rogue using some of the alternate racial abilities from the APG. Namely Plagueborn and Scavenger. A wandering peddler who competes with the goblins for the best flotsam and trying to make a buck at the festival selling some of what he's found. This would be based off the more hostile attitude towards half-orcs named in the books.

Great submissions so far, one and all!

@ Krallek and Ensu, your characters look solid fleshed out.

@ TerrorTigr; We're all new to PbP at some point. That has no negative as far as consideration. Knowing some of the story is not so bad. With all your GM experience, I would have no fear of you giving out spoilers to other players who prefer surprises. Being willing to create a character to pick up any slack is a plus.

@ Masao Takeru; Your back story is very intriguing. I think a Samurai would be a good fit, as there are a few subtle tie-in's that would work. I'm not overly familiar with that class, but if it can take the place of a fighter, it might work out nicely. (I've never been a fan of the monk. No real reason why unfortunately. Perhaps just the people playing them in games I've been in have left me kinda "meh" about them.)

@ Dreaming Warforged; I thing a cleric might work a tad better than an inquisitor, but I'm open to both.

@ Singer; I love the story! I generally try to keep the lowest ability score to an 8, and anything below a 10 has to get role played and worked into the story as a liability. Is that something that you are interested in?

@ Devastation Bob; Interesting idea with the Half-Orc. Something I had not thought of before. I'll have to think how that would work out in the party dynamic. Has potential.

I'll see who else pops in over night, then start making decisions.

I'd like to submit Zoleshi Waszeris for consideration. She's a Varisian Oracle of Metal that I designed for another RotRL game. She'll need a little bit of reworking to fit your setup, but you should be able to get a good feel for her from what's there. I should have her updated to your specs by sometime tomorrow.

Her reason for being in Sandpoint (per the Giant Slayer trait) is that she heard there are giants in the area. The Swallowtail festival will be quite a surprise for her.

Of course! Haley is certainly physically weaker than most humans and has thus leaned on her own beauty and appeal to have others do "the heavy lifting." I'm taking the Charming Trait to reflect this and will be weighing on this concept heavily during RPing!

Ensu has been fine tuned. I changed a few of the details to improve his focus a bit, and added some details of his background.

Tania could be either an inquisitor or a cleric at this point. I'll be working on the crunch for a cleric. Here is her appearance and background.

    Description:

A thick cascade of lumped blood-red hair crowns a thin stern face lit by grey eyes of steel. Her mouth and nose seem to either show indifference or outright disdain for the weak. Tania’s impeccable posture supports a muscular body showing numerous cuts, burns and bruises. She prefers to wear the dark gray burlap tunic of her order, usually under a form of metallic armor. Her battered greatsword, a symbol of function over form and a souvenir from her father, stands almost as tall as she, strapped to her back or lying on her shoulder.

Despite her impressive and threatening stance, Tania’s voice is filled with a calmness that tells of an old soul having found a true connection to the divine.

On her arm sits a red birthmark shaped like a mountain, symbol of her destiny.

    Background:

The only daughter of Ragan Teg, a fervent gorumite of Magnimar, Tania was first seen as a punishment from the Lord in Iron, for with her fiery birth died her mother, and all hope for a warrior son. Still, he took the punishment with a cynical laughter and took on Tania in the Service the instant she could walk. He was a harsh master, beating her regularly, often crying while doing so, cursing the Lord in Iron for her birth.

Knowing little else, the girls showed great passion for the worship and the training. She lifted her father’s sword before she became nubile. She pushed herself, training longer and harder than the boys, standing up defiant after they beat her up.

When she turned sixteen, she started to accompany her father to defend the city against raiders. During an ambush, she was grievously wounded and thought dead. Her father prayed for the mending of her wounds, but Gorum decided not to answer. She managed to survive, and took days to recover. As the Lord in Iron had turned her back on her in battle, so did the gorumites. She was denied teaching and asked to serve the priests instead.

For a year she served, but the shame was too great to bear forever, and one night, she stole her father’s sword and fled to Sandpoint, hearing of her great cathedral and her festival. On the road, raiders found and harassed her for days, refusing to engage in face to face combat, firing instead arrows from a safe distance. Filled with anger and rage, her face wet with tears, she ran after them, calling them all sorts of name. Slowly, she felt her strength vanish, as arrows struck true and brought her down. As she laid in the dirt, a rider approached to grab her sword as a trophy. Torn by pain, feeling warm blood flow through her fingers, loosing her senses, she raised her head and saw the Lord in Iron himself stand over her and laugh madly at her suffering. Mad with anger, she suddenly gripped her sword and stood up to her Lord, striking with steel. She felt the divine touch her as she struck down the rider. A shower of blood washed over her, filling her mouth with the taste of iron, marking her birth as a true gorumite.

She stayed on the road, making it to Sandpoint and discovering a complex and welcoming community. The weeks she has spent there thus far, mostly in deep conversation with Father Zanthus or on patrols alongside the town’s Guard, have shaken her faith. What is there beyond battle?

OK, I have Zoleshi all cleaned up.

    Here's the background.

    BACKGROUND:
It is hard for Zoleshi to remember now, but there was a before. A time before, when she had a home, and parents who loved her and taught her their trade. A time when the local boys gave her presents, or threw things at her, or even called her pretty. A time when contentment was the air she breathed and happiness the water she washed in, or so it seemed now. A time before giants.

They lived in a smithy downslope of Baslwief, on a stream she'd thought a river. Zoleshi's father was a blacksmith, forging tools of the plow and tools of the harvest along with the occasional tools of war. Her mother preferred to work in bronze and tin, and after a turn spent making pots and lanterns spent as much time as possible building intricate clockwork devices that served no true purpose other than to delight the observer with the sheer marvel of their existence. But they spent most of their time smelting the trash ore that came down from Baslwief -- ore too poor to bother smelting at the mine, but too rich to ignore. Zoleshi spent many long days working the bellows, or tending the furnace, or sweeping and shoveling the omnipresent grit of pulverized rock and powdered metal. She hated the labor, but she loved the work, and her mind was full of the things that she would create one day, when the hammer or the file was in her hand.

But that was before the giants came.

Her parents were screaming and the house was shaking, and a deep rumbling laughter rolled across the heavens like amused thunder. Then she was outside, as the smithy was splintered by clubs the size of mastiffs. Her father was thrown against a wall as easily as Zoleshi would throw a hammer, and all her fear turned to rage. She was at the smelter then, and did all the things she was told never to do.

Soon there was fire, and molten metal, and clouds of smoke and metal powders. And the bellow of a burning giant. Zoleshi found herself standing on her father's anvil with a hammer in her hand, facing an angry giant. The once well-organized smithy was a riot of tools and clockwork gears, and the air was heavy with the scent of woodsmoke and burning hair. She smashed the giant's hand, and then his club sent Zoleshi flying, to land face down in a mound of powdered metal. She struggled to rise, she struggled to breathe, and then everything exploded.

Zoleshi woke a different person in a different world.

Everything she had known was gone. It had all been smashed, then burned, then dipped in molten metal. That went for the smithy, the house, the smelter -- and Zoleshi herself.

After breathing powdered metal for so long, Zoleshi's lungs were full of it, and so was the rest of her body. Her skin was grey, her nails copper, and she coughed constantly, trying vainly to expel the poison from her body. And her face was ruined -- molten bronze had dripped down her cheeks like tears, leaving bright tracks in the blackened flesh.
That she had lived was incomprehensible to her. People don't survive such things. Not without a miracle. It was only when she looked down at her hands and saw the brands on the back of them that she understood. Perfect bronze clockwork gears. Zoleshi's mother had told her about Brigh, the woman of clockwork, the Whisper in Bronze. Somehow Brigh had saved her. Had chosen her.

But why? For what purpose? Zoleshi didn't know. But she did know that it was time to begin hunting. So she gathered together what things she could, and went out into the world. There were giants to kill.

And I totally laughed when I saw Tania's background. Could we have a Cleric of the Lord of Iron and an Oracle of the Lady in Bronze in the same party? Maybe not, but it would be hilarious if they were.

Wow. A lot of clerics and divine casters. I may have to consider changing Ensu over to bard.

I'd like to submit Alivia a Lawful Good Half-Elf Sorcerer. Everything should be in place, including background story, notes, progression plans, etc. One thing that may be a sticker is the trait 'Rich Parents', I chose it for story purposes and to be able to legitimately purchase really expensive clothes :) I didn't spend much of it beyond that, if the amount of coin is an issue, I'd be perfectly happy to pitch the money (but I'd like to keep the RP portion of it), perhaps trade it for a +1 skill bonus to something like Knowledge [Fashion] or Knowledge [Being Spoiled]. I just see her being used to throwing money around rather than dealing with things, e.g. overtipping, overpaying, buying expensive frivolous stuff, etc. I don't plan to use it to buy 'useful' things :)

i've opted for inquisitor after all. Let me know if you have any question.

Aww crud!! Always too late! ...or am I?

After careful consideration, Masao will be a Samurai(Sword Saint). Since the Samurai is an alternate class of the Cavalier, he'll be giving up at least a mount companion for it. Which I could live with. :)

I also see some of his father's journals covering travels in the Inner Sea, and he only discovers that after he's already on the way. So even though his parents are long dead, he still is getting the feeling they are watching over him for the better.

Malack the Accursed (A scene for your consideration):

"I understand you are looking for work?" the Sheriff says as he takes in the vagabond sitting on the floor before him. The sheriff has seen some sorry cases in his days but this one takes the cake. The vagrant's hair is long and matted and reeks of wine. There's a muscular, natural athletic frame that hides beneath more than a few years of excessive drinking that has coalesced into a sizable gut. His finger nails look like they've been chewed by different mouths and the patch over his left eye looks old and nearly worn through in the center. Skin is stretched over him like too little leather binding a book and its scratched and marred with a kind of artistic regularity. Still when this bum opens his mouth and reveals a handful of clean white teeth the Sheriff can't help but find him somewhat affable.
With a few white teeth gleaming in the morning sun, the bum let's loose a charismatic belch before says, "I'm a fighter, yes sir-ee. No frills, no fancy pants titles, just a fighter through and through. Came to get my name carved at the Hagfish. Turns out my finances are a bit out of order at the moment. The name's Malack. My friends call me, well... Malack. Can't seem to recall any friends at the moment. There was that bearded lady back in Korvosa though..."
The Sheriff barely listening interrupts Malack, "Let's not get a head of ourselves here. Where exactly are you from? You're no spring chicken and judging by that accent you don't hale from these parts."
Malack thoughtfully digs through his nose with a sharp finger nail and says, "Well I had a mother and father and all that business. I seem to recall being a soldier for a fancy pants or two... or ten. Somewhere in Belkzen, River Kingdoms, Numeria? Yeah Numeria seems like the place I got started. They say I diehard! More than a few jealous folks have tried to run me through, but I've forgotten more about surviving than most ever learn. Hahaha. What was I laughing about? Anyways let me get less drunk and I'll be a guard fer ya."
The sheriff nods and says, "A wonderful proposition, and I'm sure you're more than formidable but I'll thank you to just enjoy the festival and be on your way Mr. Malack."

I've never done play by post, or Rise of the RuneLords. I would like to know if I can still submit a character? I was thinking of running a Halfling Bard.

Geo is my name. I lived with my parents in the city and they were happy with their lives and their humble community. But I can't live with that. I don't want to live my life not being known. Not having my name spoken and whispered through the streets with awe. So I'm on my way to Sandpoint to Prove myself as Geo Storyteller Extraordinaire! This festival is going to be unforgettable and I'm going to play a role in it.

For your consideration from a first time PBPer, Galia Hartswift. An outcast bastard child from the barbarians of the north.

    Description:
A haughty, distrustful woman, she stands 5'8". While a half-elf by birth, her childhood taught her to hide her elven side, and she takes great pains to disguise her elven features. Dark auburn hair frames a usually stern demeanor. Her leather armor contains a few indistinct emblems from her (former) tribe.

    Background:
Born the product of a rape, she learned early of her families shame. While she was adopted by the tribal chief, to whose sister she was born, she nevertheless suffered insults and disgrace from her peers. As she reached the age of 14, when a mate was to be chosen for her, she learned the true nature of her father. Her hatred for men grew, and not wanting to be given to just any man, she decided to leave the clan and search for her father, who was rumored to be a monster hunter, living now far to the south. She set out after him, searching out rumors of local monsters in the hopes of finding him hunting the same beast. She eventually began teaching herself to hunt monsters as well and found she has developed a taste for it. She is "hunting" near Sandpoint on suspicion that he may be in the area. Her intentions toward him are as yet unclear.

    Crunch:
Besides her reflexes honed as a child of the wilderness, she also has the "Monster Hunter" trait gained from her hunt of her father.

    So many good submissions!

Unfortunately, I only have room left for
    one arcane
    one melee and
    one healer.

The two Sorcerer's are the toughest for me to choose from. Both backgrounds have so much possibility and are so opposite of each other.

Haley Kindel (Singer), would you be interested in lowering you max ability score to 18 (after mods)? I always prefer a balance where PC's don't start off above that maximum (I neglected to put that into the guidelines post, sorry). If that is a deal breaker for you, I understand, otherwise your in.

    Masao Takeru
For a Melee position, I'm warming up to the idea of the Samurai. The back story and mechanics seem intriguing. I've never played in a game with one before, but I think the fit is good. If I read correctly, you will be playing WITHOUT a mount, correct. That would be my preference as well.

    E'Terah Deepheavy
This campaign really needs a healer, and I have a soft spot for Dwarves in my games. Your backstory and appearance will be a fun divergence from the typical Dwarf I'm used to.

Harley, Masao and E'Terah please pack your gear and check in on the discussion thread.

Provided there are no issues with the three selections above, plus the two already made, that is the party for this game.

With so many great listings, I'll check back here if one of the selected is unable to play.

Thank you one and all !

Correct. While a typical Samurai uses a mount, the Sword Saint is more focused on his weapon and less concerned with mobility. A different campaign I might find more of a use for a mount, I think this concept works better without. :)

Thank you for the opportunity! :) I'll hop over to the other thread and go from there :)

Ah well, maybe next time. Have a great game everyone!

Thank you for considering me, I hope you all have a great campaign!

Haha, such bad luck! I wrote up a summary of my character before work today, but when I pressed "submit", it deleted the entire, stupid post. Out of time, I had to head to a 12-hour-shift.

Now that I came home, the group is finished! Nooooes!

Just out of curiosity: would a zero-damage, all-trickery Gnome Sorcerer even have been feasible?

Good luck have fun everyone! ;)

Ah nuts. I missed out on yet another RoTRL campaign. Good luck all.
