Now that combat is over, Captain Walren takes a deep breath of relief: “You see what was I worried about? Anyway, I had no idea to have such portents on my barge. I wouldn’t have been worried if I just knew what you are capable of. Anyway, I’ll take you closer to the sailboat so you can take a look around. But try to be quick please: look around for some spoils and then put a few holes in the bottom the boat to sink her, so we can prevent other privateer from coming along to claim her. There might be other raiders nearby, so be quick!”. That said, the Captain draws closer to the privateers’ sailboat and you quickly board her.
The boat is loaded with mostly worthless remnants from past hauls. On the privateers’ body you find some useful items: 6 alchemist’s fire, 3 potions of cure light wounds*, 3 longswords, 3 light crossbows with 60 bolts, 3 leather armors, 3 heavy steel shields and a key.
---
---
After having searched the sailboat, you put a few holes in her bottom as suggested by Captain Walren and jump back aboard the Black Mist. “Found anything useful?”, asks the dwarf, “Keep it all. It’s your reward for saving my barge for the second time in a single week. You’ve earned it”, smiles the Captain. “Let’s get moving Zandu! We’re nearing Tamran, Kassenites. Go in the cabin and gather your belongings”.

Merephel can easily identify these items taking 10 on her Spellcraft check, so I’m assuming she does and successfully identifies these items.

After the battle, the captain puts as much distance as possible between the Black Mist and the privateers’ sinking vessel. About 2 hours later, the city of Tamran draws near. The Captain smiles at you: “And so here we are. It has been a pleasure to share this journey with you, Heroes of Kassen. You folk should be proud of you. Thank you for saving my beloved barge twice, and try to make good use of my ancestor’s scrolls. I hope our path will cross again anytime soon. As I’ve already said to Calden, if you’re looking for a good place to stay try Gar’s Last Meal, a good, safe establishment down near the water”. The dwarf smiles again and shakes hands with each of you. “Goodbye, Kassenites”. Zandu greets you as well: “Goodbye. It’s been a pleasure!” Asina looks at him and sighs. “Shirry, can I stay on the barge? After all, there’s always time to see Tamran…”, the girl asks in a whisper while her eyes are still turned to Zandu. Asina has never called Shirzon like that. She’s clearly trying to optimize her chance of success!
---
In the dark, Tamran glitters with hundreds of tiny lights, emanating from the windows and lamps that dot the city. It has the look of a new town, built primarily of wood, though some older buildings linger here and there, many showing signs of damage from the war with Molthune to the south. Cracked walls and burnt remnants can be seen even from this distance, fresh scars from the long conflict.

Okay guys, now I need to know what would you like to do once you’re in Tamran. It’s night when you arrive, so it would make sense that you search for a place to stay for the night before doing anything else, but I don’t want to limit your freedom of choice, so I’ll wait to know your intentions before moving things along.
Also, I think it’s time to update your loot sheet. Please try to be a bit more hasty this time in claiming the object you’re interested in and add them to your character’s sheet. Do not forget to add to the loot sheet also the scrolls from Captain Walren.
Identifying the still unidentified items: Merephel, I think you still have to identify some items. First off, that scroll you’ve found in the Crypt; then, the 1st scroll Captain Walren gave you.
Calden Tigg |
Calden takes a breath with his hands on his knees when it becomes apparent that the privateers have been dealth with. Even he is surprised by their accomplishment. "Wow, well done everyone. We really worked together."
Perception, Take 10: 10 + 9 = 19
He nimbly jumps down into the raider's sailboat once its been kept alongside their barge. "Merephel, I think one of them if stil breathing. You'd better come over." He helps the priestess down, then takes out his wayfinder and quickly searches the boat for anything of interest, handing it up to the others on the barge. Saving the heaviest for last, he eventually hauls the three privateers up to the barge. "We can't just leave them here, even for the one that died already. With Tamran so close, we could just hand them over to the city guard there. They'll know what to do with them."
I assumed Merephel would stabilize the two dying privateers.
--
Appraise untrained: 1d20 ⇒ 18
Once the sailboat has been sunk and the captain has set the barge on the last stretch of the voyage to Tamran, Calden takes a look at their spoils with the others. He opens the lockbox that he found, peering at the contents. "Wow, look at that. Platinum! And this is proof that these people were Molthuni privateers. That will help get them locked up in Tamran, and we could probably even get a reward from it!" With the help of the others, he sorts the items into piles. "This could come in useful, take what you need. The rest there, we can probably sell in Tamran. How about leaving the magic anchor with the captain, as a token of appreciation?"
Korech |
Korech stares in astonishment at Calden and Shirzon as the group lays waste to the privateers.
"Where ... did you learn that? We work good though. Very good."
Korech claps everyone on the back happily, if a little awkwardly before they board the privateer to save the dying. He helps Calden moving the goods and people from the privateer before it is sunk. Korech turns Walren and Zandu.
"You live good life, we meet again."
Korech looks over the spoils and nods about the feather token.
"Is not important to us - just money, but very important to a sailor. Walren treat us good."
He looks at the three privateers, frowning.
"Dead one... is there reason not to just leave with ship? Do gods say it's wrong?"
----------
In Tamran
----------
The sight of the city excites and terrifies Korech, even a small, ramshackle affair like Tamran. He immediately reacts to the city-smell before looking to the others, pulling his hood up.
"Get privateers to guard-folk. Then find inn. Not like going around carrying hurt people."
Calden Tigg |
"I agree, Korech. It looks like the city has seen some bad times. Hopefully we'll find some guards near the docks, so they can take care of the privateers. Then we'll ask directions and find that inn. I'm pretty tired, and walking around in a strange city after dark doesn't seem like a good idea,if we can avoid it.."
-Posted with Wayfinder
Merephel Angorat |
"You know what I am most proud of? Our constant teamwork is getting consistently better. You are all growing into such splendid warriors too."
She beams like a proud mother.
"And Korech, one thing Erastil teaches is not to waste. I believe he would be fine with, nay encourage you to ensure this items don't go to waste."
In Tamran:
Merephel nods to her companions, agreeing to Korech's idea.
"And as for the inn, my vote is to head there first. I think a nap on some nice solid ground is in order."
Try to identify those last two scrolls.
Spellcraft: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25 Crypt Scroll
Spellcraft: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15 Walren Scroll
As for the loot, I will pass. Take what you guys want, and we can just sell the rest.
Shirzon the Quarter |
Shirzon helps the others search the sailboat and lug the bodies onto the barge. She grimaces at moving the dead privateer, but figures it's better not to leave it floating on the lake. Better to let the Tamran authorities deal with it as they will. She makes her goodbyes with Captain Walren and Zandu, and smirks at Asina's request. ”I suppose you can work out becoming a sailor with your uncle, if you're liking being on the water. But there will be other Zandus in the city, too,” she whispers back with a wink.
She nods in agreement with the plans for the privateers and then heading for the inn that the captain recommended. ”Those sailors shouldn't have been so cocky as to attack us when they were outnumbered. It doesn't help that we're more trouble than they bargained for,” Shirzon adds with a smirk. She sheathes her wand and answers Korech with a cryptic ”I picked up some tricks from Holgast. Anyway, let's head to Gar’s Last Meal after we find some guards.”

You’ve finally reached Tamran. As you get off board, Captain Walren allows for the harbormaster to board the Black Mist and check her cargo. In the meantime, two port guards have noticed that you’re carrying three unconscious men and ask for explanations. As you explain the situation and let them see the privateers’ charter, they pat on your back and compliment you. They ask you to follow them. They provide a cart in which you can put down the privateers, and lead you through Tamran’s streets. You cannot see much of the town because it’s dark and the rain is still pouring, but you can smell the city: a breeze of fish, sweat and garbage fills your nostrils as you walk.
---
After walking for almost half an hour, you reach the barracks where you quickly speak with Sergeant Moridan. You explain her the situation and show her the privateer’s charter. She congratulates for your act of valor and rewards you with 650 golden pieces. Before leaving the privateers’ to the authorities, you ask for directions. Two guards escort you to Gar’s Last Meal.
---
Once you reach the inn, the guards bid you farewell and you then enter Gar’s Last Meal. It’s late night, and no one is sitting at the tables except for a drunken man who appears to be sleeping off his hangover. The inn’s owner comes closer and greets you: “Well met and welcome to Gar’s Last Meal. You arrive a tad late I must admit, but I will serve as best as I can. I’m Puglas Tomall, owner of this place. Would you like something to eat or drink?, asks the man as you take a sit at one of the many available tables. The man is a grizzled veteran, with a bloated belly and a bit red-faced. He has very thin gray hairs but amazing green eyes. He must be in his 50s.

Identify the still unidentified items: Merephel, you’ve successfully identified your scroll. It’s a scroll of lesser restoration.
Calden Tigg |
Calden walks proud in the knowledge that they've already proven a favor to Tamran. He tries his best not to let it get to him, to stay on guard and not let this new city overwhelm him. He doesn't quite succeed, astonished that they could walk for half an hour and still in inside the city. "Did you expect it would be this big," he asks of the others. "...and this smelly?"
--
As they make their way to the inn, Calden motions for Asina to come close, giving her a conspiratory smile. "Could you try to distract Merephel for a while, as we're going to the inn? Just keep her talking..."
With Merephel distracted, he pulls Shirzon and Korech in closer, whispering to them while checking to see that Merephel doesn't overhear. "I just realized that Merephel's birthday is around the corner. It's Neth the 22nd, that's next Starday! She's always so modest in claiming things for herself, and we got a really large reward for the privateers, so I thought maybe we could buy her something special as a birthday gift. Maybe tomorrow, when we're going to ask around for Reginar, one or two of us could sneak off to one of the temples, to see whether they can find something she'd like?"
I was thinking about buying her a Pearl of power, level 1, to give her some more spellcasting options. Should be available in a city of Tamran's size, I hope.
--
At Gar's Last Meal, Calden practically flops down on his chair, weary from the travel, the late hour and the impressions from the city. "We apologize for the late hour, Master Tomall. We only just arrived in the city. Anything you have left to eat, would be very welcome. We would also like to stay, if you have rooms available. Your inn came with the recommendation of Captain Walren..."
Korech |
Korech blinks, hadn't thought about things like birthdays. He nods rapidly.
"Merephel good to us, keep us safe, teach me about Gods. Present is good idea, I help pay." He looks down at his share from the charter.
"So much money... good way to spend. Never had more than ten gold before."
Korech remains silent as a mouse as he takes in the city, still completely overwhelmed. After dropping off the privateers and their charter with the guards, he shows incredible relief as he walks into Gar's Last Meal. Even an inn in a strange place is a sign of comfort and safety. Also, any respite from the smell of the city is a welcome one.
Settling in, shaken and exhausted, Korech looks up to Tomall.
"Ale and food, any food you have," he says as he tries to force himself to relax.
Turning to the others Korech lets out a long breath before speaking up.
"So... what next?"
Calden Tigg |
Calden marks his fingers as he replies to Korech, counting off the things to do. "Well, we have enough things to do tomorrow: It's probably best to get our bearing in the city, if we're going to be here a while. We have to get in touch with Reginar. And I'm sure that Shirzon will want to take Asina to her uncle - maybe he knows something about this Reginar? Might be worth starting there..."
Merephel Angorat |
Merephel nods.
"We don't have a lot of leads, so having a local who could fill us in could be a potentially excellent idea. Well done, Calden. Let's all escort Asina safely home, and see if it can further our quest as well."
GM Giuseppe |
Puglas Tomall personally serves you a rather cold fish soup; the meal it's still good though. The ale is not that good as well, but you will eat everything after what you've had to endure in the last few days.
When you're done eating, Puglas personnally shows you your rooms: "I've got no more single rooms left. I've got a double room and a triple room left, so feel free to divide yourself as you wish. Here, these are the keys." The man smiles sleepily. "Eleven golden pieces and five silver pieces. Since you know Captain Walren, you only owe me eleven golden pieces".

As always on Sundays I've got not so much time to post, but I wanted to move things along a bit. I would like if you could share a RP scene with your roommates about whichever topic you want. I'll post more tomorrow.
Merephel Angorat |
Merephel grabs one of the keys.
"Us girls will take the triple room. You boys can split the double."
She runs off, calling back over her shoulder, "And don't forget to pay the man!"

The girls share the triple room while the boys stay in the double one. When you wake up, it’s already late in the morning. Last night you’ve been keeping early hours, so you needed to rest. You wake up to the incessant drumming of the rain.
Once you’ve dressed, you get downstairs where Puglas serves you a hearty breakfast. While you eat, you make plans for today, and once you’re done eating, Puglas offers you a free hot bath. Those of you who accepts are lead into a small room with a wooden basin at its center filled with hot water. A maid helps you bathing. Once you’re clean, you wear your clothes (hopefully you have clean ones available) and you’re ready to depart. You pay the bill to Puglas (please subtracts eleven gp from your treasure) and bid him farewell.
---
The first leg of your journey consists in bringing Asina to the Jovial Hunter Alehouse. The place can be everywhere in Tamran, so you spend several hours asking around to find out the alehouse’s location.
---
The city of Tamran is a ramshackle city, especial for the capital city of a nation. It is built on piers and pilings over the marshlands at the mouth of the Marideth River, where it meets the banks of Lake Encarthan. The city is connected by a web of bridges, ramps and causeways, and a flotilla of barges and skiffs, and all of the buildings are made from wood. Due to the fact Tamran is still standing after its violent history it is seen as a symbol of Nirmathas tenacity and resourcefulness. Considering Nirmathas is a country at war, Tamran seems to lack any sort of defences including a city wall but this is in fact its best defence.
---
While you ask around for direction, you have enough time to sell your loot. Sometimes you split into smaller groups to enter some shops allowing for the remaining party members to continue asking around for indications. Some of you need clothes, other magic items, and you even manage to change all your currency in lighter platinum coins as you enter the Temple of Abadar**.
---
Once you reach the tavern, you step his bringing Asina with you. Once inside, you’re immediately welcomed by a serving maid near the door, who points to a nearly empty table in the back. Made from enormous timbers, the Forest Bounty is a long hall, open at both the front and back, filled with wooden tables and benches. Dozens of people gather here, eating, drinking, and laughing. One table of patrons even carries on with a bawdy song that seems to have most of the folk smiling. At the nearly empty table sits a robust man, wearing green and brown leathers and cloaked in a large bearskin. A longbow rests against the table next to him. He looks up and with a hearty laugh says, “Welcome, friends. I hear that you have been looking for me. I am Reginar Lacklan. Please sit—we have much to discuss.” He sweeps out his arms in an inviting gesture as a serving maid places a tray of roast boar and forest vegetables on the table before him. “I see you are one more that Cygar told me…Who’s the girl?” asks kindly Reginar, smiling at Asina.

* Please take note that this check takes 1d4 hours to complete. You can try and make a communal check, keeping the best result with the remaining party members who totalize a result of 10 or more granting a +2 bonus to the character who gets the highest result, or you can attempt the check individually. Asina grants Shirzon (or the group if you attempt a communal check) a +2 bonus on her check.
** I’ve updated the Loot Sheet. Please post in the Discussion Thread with a list of the items you’re willing to buy. I’ve assumed that you would sell all of the still unclaimed items on the Loot Sheet.
Korech |
Korech nods dumbly as Merephel scampers off, and after finishing his food he finally, wearily crawls his way into the room with Calden. Not saying a word, he yanks off his chainmail and collapses into a heavy, heavy sleep.
The following morning, Korech again remains quiet, so completely out of his element he feels he has little if anything to offer to the conversation unless directly asked. Happier to get a hot meal, he devours his food, going over the plans for the day in his head while he listens to the others intently. He's snapped out of his concentration by Puglas offers a bath.
Deeply suspicious of bathing, Korech nonetheless has had Arnama tell him he stinks more than enough times to know that he probably reeks to high heaven. He meekly agrees to the bath, and after the most awkward ten minutes of his life as a maid fusses about with the hot water and soap, he escapes with most of his dignity in shreds, but at least at least a little less sour-smelling.
After meeting with the group, Korech looks terrified as it becomes apparent nobody knows where the Jovial Hunter is. He steps out into the swaying, chaotic mess that is Tamran, stunned to see it in full operation during the day. He looks over to Calden.
"Maybe they ask questions, we sell stuff? I uh, not good for questions."
Calden Tigg |
Calden quickly heads upstairs after Korech and settles his bags in the room. He sits crosslegged on the bed for a moment in an attempt to meditate, but he finds that he lacks the peace of mind. There's too many noises to distract him, even at this hour. Eventually, he picks up the stool and seat himself before the window for a while, taking in the sounds and smell of the city. Eventually, he gets undressed and falls into a deep sleep.
--
The next morning, Calden is awake early, already dressed and seated on the bed when Korech wakes up. He is in a cheerful mood despite the rain, bounding down the stairs. "Come on, we have a city to explore!" He wolfs down his breakfast, until the offer of a bath gives him pause. "That would probably be for the best..." Taking a quick soak, Calden dresses in the new coat he bought in Kassen, eager to start. "Thank you for your good services, Master Tomall. Here's a bit extra for the maids," he says as he adds three silvers to the bill. (Reduced 11gp 3 sp from my character sheet).
--
I suggest we go for the communcal check on Diplomacy. With Merephel in the lead and taking 10, we should be able to hit DC 20 with just my assist.
Diplomacy, Take 10: 10 + 5 = 15 (+1 against women)
Knowledge local: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 1 = 20
Calden puts an arm around Korech, after he has pulled the hood of his cloak up. Not even the incessant rain seems to dent his good mood. "Come on, Korech. It won't be that bad. It's a big city, they must be used to all kinds of people. We'll do fine."
As they wander through the new city, Calden pays close attention to his surroundings and seems to find his stride quickly. He buys some apples from a street cart, offering a small bow to the vendor and a bright smile when he hands her the coppers. While they're walking, he talks a bit about the city. "My brother Tolle was always fascinated by Tamran. ...and by war. Did you know they don't have a city wall, on purpose? When the Molthuni try to take the city, they just let them. And then the guards strike at the invaders from the country side, again and again." Calden is silent for a while, letting it sink in. "That must be brutal on the common folk, though. Horrible isn't it, to think that they considered that the best option?"
When they pass by a seamstress, Calden suggests that Merephel and Shirzon maybe buy something nice for Asina, to celebrate her new start in Tamran. "Me and Korech will get rid of those weapons we found, in the meantime. Meet you back here in about an hour? Come no, Korech. We'll ask around for the Jovial Hunter." Trying to help the half-orc overcome his doubts, he adds "It would be nothing out of the ordinary for someone like you to ask about the "Jovial Hunter", wouldn't it? What's the worst that could happen?" At their various stops to sell and trade, Calden asks around whether anyone in the city knows of a fellow named Reginar.
--
When Calden and Korech return, Calden has a bit of platinum and some information to share. "We asked around about the Jovial Hunter. I'm not quite sure, but we were directed to the North end of the city. I got some directions that should get us there. Ready to go?"
On their way there, Merephel just manages to see Calden give Shirzon a thumbs-up, when he thinks that the young priestess isn't looking.
--
When they finally find the tavern, and the man at the table introduces himself as Reginar, Calden has to blink twice in surprise. "Yes sir, we were looking for you. But it seems like you found us instead." Still a bit shocked that their search for the man was so easy, he sits down.
Shirzon the Quarter |
Diplomacy + Asina: 1d20 - 1 + 2 ⇒ (19) - 1 + 2 = 20
After a long, dreamless sleep and a hot bath, Shirzon feels refreshed and ready to continue their travels in Tamran. She helps Asina get dressed and offers Merephel help in putting on her armor, then heads out with the others, the hood of her cloak raised against the rain.
Though tattered, the hastily assembled city appeals to the young half-orc, who admires its tenacity. With help from Asina's charm, she manages to find out where the Jovial Hunter is, although its name has changed. Normally awkward or off-putting in these sort of interactions, Shirzon is relaxed enough from her stay at the inn that she can chat up some friendly strangers for information. It helps that they seem more concerned about Molthuni attacks than orcs from Belkzen (or elsewhere).
Once in the Forest Bounty's tavern, Shirzon introduces herself to Reginar. "I'm Shirzon. This here is Asina - we're actually looking for her uncle Loran, the owner. Before we get started on our business that Cygar sent us here for, we should talk to him. Is he usually around?" she asks, looking around the crowded tavern for the bar, assuming that the owner will be managing it like Trelvar does.
Korech |
Korech seems a little reassured by Calden, although the skittish half-orc still remains extremely quiet, just doing his part to haul the weapons so that they can be sold. He does nothing to help with the search for the tavern, avoiding talking to people if at all possible, depsite Calden's encouragement.
He does listen intently as Calden explains some of the history of Tamran.
"Good way for fight. If you have no target, you can't shoot."
---
Korech also takes notice of the more relaxed attitude of the city, and the larger number of half-orcs in the population. This doesn't do too much to relax him, but he doesn't slouch as much.
Once at the tavern, Korech relaxes once more, and immediately takes a liking to Reginar, speaking carefully as he tries to improve his common.
"A man who says hello with boar is a good man," says Korech happily. "And yes, we bring Asina to see uncle. What does Loran looks like?"

Reginar listens intently as you explain the reason why Asina is here, smiling near the end of your speech: “Loran!”, he calls rising his right hand, and gesturing asking the man behind the bar to reach him. Only a few seconds pass, and a fat man with thick moustaches and wearing an apron comes closer. He smiles at each of you with a perplexed expression, but then his lips widens into a jovial smile as his eyes gaze upon Asina. “Asina! Your father wrote me about you, and I was worried about your travel. You’re late, I was expecting you two days ago. The lake is not safe anymore…”, he somberly comments. “I suppose you’re Shirzon. I’ve heard great things about you my dear. Thank you for bringing my nephew here safe and sound”. As he says so, the man pats Shirzon vigorously. “Well done, well done. Hey, Asina, come with me, I’ll show you the room where you’re going to stay. Let’s leave these grown-up discuss their business alone” he says blinking to her nephew. “Sure, uncle Puglas! What a nice place you’ve got here!”, she comments as she scan the tavern in search of something interesting. Puglas accompanies her upstairs, leaving you enough time to speak with Reginar.
“I hope your travel was safe, even though I fear that, as your delay testifies, something bad occurred. I would like to hear about your troubles, and maybe even discuss the current political situation here in Nirmathas, but we don’t have much time before people begin flocking in here. So we must skip right to the point. It’s not safe to repeat every detail of the story here, but I trust that Cygar provided you with enough information about those tomb robbers and the amulets. That brings us to the reason why you’re here: Razmiri priests. I know you’ve found one of their mask in the Crypt, and that’s a good lead. But we’ll need much more if we wish to find more about their motives and try to get them out of the city”. Reginar smiles widely: “I’m happy you’re enjoying the boar. Please, feel free to eat while you listen to me, that will make our conversation appears as much more ordinary that it actually is”.
Reginar looks around for a few seconds, snaps his fingers and starts the actual conversation: “The cult of Razmir appeared in Tamran about 2 years ago, first as a small band of missionaries. They soon raised the funds to build a temple, which was constructed over a year ago. Their power and influence in the city have grown ever since, and the local guards seem to give them no heed, even going so far as to dismiss any reports of their foul practices. I suspect that the city guards help protect the temple, watching out for thieves and intruders, but I don’t have any proof supporting my suspicions. Members of the cult go out frequently to aid the poor and proselytize. I suspect this is just a cover for their more illegal activities, such as thievery, blackmail, and extortion. I’ve seen them beat a man to within an inch of his life, claiming the humble cobbler stole from the temple, while the city guards merely watched the event and took no action…Members of the faith heavily guard the temple itself by day and night. They hold no public services, so the only real way in is to join their religion. I know that they interview applicants at the Ranger’s Lament, a tavern across the street from the temple. If you hope to gain entrance, attending one of these meetings is the best way. The next meeting is scheduled for tomorrow night…And as far as the amulets are concerned, a group from the temple left to head up north a few months ago and returned a month later, minus a few of their number. After that group arrived in town, they hurried back to the temple, and I’m not sure what happened while they were away. About a week ago, another group, this one led by a female cultist in blue robes, left the temple and boarded a boat. She might be the temple’s leader, but I cannot be sure. They have not been seen since. The worst part is that I have no idea how many cultists there are. While most wear white robes, some wear gray, and he has seen a few in black. In any case, I cannot get an accurate count because they all look alike, thanks to their masks”.
Reginar pauses for a bit, swallows a cup of ale and ensues: “For the time being, I would like you to get more information. We know too little about the cult to take any overt action, so I suggest you try to infiltrate the temple as prospective members. I advise against any needless risks at this stage. Instead, you should just play along and meet up with me in 1 week to report what you have learned. It’s everything clear enough?”.
Reginar catches his breath after the long talk and takes another round of ale, wetting his lips: “Now, if you have any question I may answer, feel free to ask”.

Merephel, upon waking, excitedly hurries to get dressed. She makes herself look splendid, doing up her hair, wearing new clothing, and generally keeping a larger-than-normal smile on her face.
As she and Shirzon break off to wander the city, she makes a point to smile at everyone. Most don't return the smile, although some men make a point to give her a strange smile back. Merepehel doesn't understand why.
She buys a little fruit, and engages everyone she can in the pursuit of information about the city.
I'll take Calden's advice and take 10 on Diplomacy for 19, before his assist. Although it looks like Shirzon already took care of it!
Korech |
Korech does not need any encouragement to eat, as he devours the food in front of him, happy as possible to appear 'normal', and also get a free meal for his efforts. He looks up on occasion, nodding as Reginar goes through his explanation of the history and current state of the cult. It's when he comes to the last part that Korech stops eating, and looks up to stare with a stupid expression on his face.
"You want us to what?"
Calden Tigg |
Calden waves Asina goodbye, happy to see that she seems happy with her uncle. "Bye Asina. Don't worry, we'll drop in from time to time."
Calden eats of the roast boar, nearly choking when he becomes clear what Reginar has in mind for them. "We have to join them? Inflitrate, like spies...? But we're nowhere near qualified for that. They'll see right through that, won't try? Why would four people from far off come all the way to Tamran to join their temple? We don't know that first thing about Razmir. Besides, what if they make the connection with the fact that we're from Kassen, where they stole the amulets..."
He tries to perform some breathing exercises to calm himself, hoping that Reginar has a solid plan.
GM Giuseppe |
Reginar listens to Calden's worries with a resolute expression, then answers with equal resolution: "Yes, I want you to join them. That's the only way to get some proofs about their activities here in Tamran and hopefully discover something about their interest in those amulets", says the man, gazing directly into Calden's eyes, "Yes, like spies...No one is qualified for that. But I can assure they won't see right through you. They don't care. They just want fresh meat, they won't bother about your past. Of course, you will have to make a point not to mention your connection with Kassen. They don't have to know where you come from. You could easily be Tamrans willing to change their lives. And no, you are not supposed to know anything about Razmir; that's the reason why you are joining them. Maybe you've heard someone talking about them and wanted to give it a try. You want to know more about Razmir, you want to join the cult to change your life. Your reputation has not reached this city yet, so no one will make the connection unless you mention it. Remember, you're from Tamran or from a nearby town, and came here exactly for this reason: join the cult and change your miserable lives". Reginar sits back, self-satisfied with his explanation.
Calden Tigg |
Calden seems to have a retort, but then changes his mind. "I was thinking no one here would know us, as people of Tamran. But then I thought how many people we asked about you. It takes some time to get away from a small-town mentality, where everyone knows everyone..."
"Since we're going to be 'under cover', will we need to stay at another inn? Maybe we can leave some of our things here, and take lodging in a poorer part of town?"
-Posted with Wayfinder
GM Giuseppe |
Reginar nods at Calden: "Staying here is safe enough. Master Loran, here, is a good friend of the Society. Furthermore, this place is a tavern, not an inn, and no one would suspect you to be staying here. But Master Loran can arrange to find a cot for you for the night, I'm sure. After all, you're going to stay here for only another day. Don't get too paranoic: no one in this city knows you apart from me and Master Loran".
Korech |
Korech's face falls as he listens to Calden agree to the plan.
It's going to be really hard to learn about Erastil when I'm pretending to be a Razmiri cultist...
"Okay," he says morosely. "If it easy to get in, then we do."
GM Giuseppe |
"Well said, Korech, that's the spirit!", says Reginar patting the half-orc on his shoulders. "Now I've got to go. I trust you've listened intently. No attacks, no aggression, no violence, no bloooshed. You cannot just fight your way in, understood? All we need now is information. We'll meet back again here in a week. Good luck guys, Nirmathas will owe you a favor regardless of the outcome of this mission".
Merephel Angorat |
"I will do this, but it will take me some time to figure out how I can do this and still maintain proper Shelyn worship. I may need to smuggle in my holy symbol..."
Shirzon the Quarter |
Shirzon hugs Asina goodbye before she goes off to join her uncle, glad to see her in safe care but a little sad to lose her company as well. She settles in a scarfs down various roasted roots and greens, glad to not have another bowl of fish soup in front of her.
She picks her teeth as she listens to Reginar's plan, quietly intent. "Sounds straight forward enough. Seems like these Razmir types lure people in with good will and then get away with nastiness with either coin or compulsion of some other kind. There's no doubt that we're taking the bait - I just don't know what the trap is yet. And I guess that's what we're gonna find out, if we want to get our amulets back," she finally says to her friends, calm and resolute. "Let's get some rest while we can. We can talk about infiltration plans tomorrow before the meeting at the Rangers Lament. If you've got holy symbols to hide, I'm pretty good at that sort of thing. You could also sew it into your shirt or something."
Calden Tigg |
Calden takes a deep breath after listening to Reginar and Shirzon. "I guess you're right. Me, I don't need much, really... I suppose it won't be too much of a stretch to say I came from a farm and went out looking for a better life. Maybe an easier life, even. I don't really like not knowing what to expect, but we'll just have to improvise."
"We'd best get some rest while we still can, and spend tomorrow planning, sorting out our stories and what we're going to take with us." He turns to Reginar for a final question. "We found this magical Bag of Holding earlier. It seems like an ideal place to smuggle some items. Do you think that'll be safe?"
GM Giuseppe |
Reginar, who was almost leaving, turns to face Calden and answers: "I cannot guarantee that, though there are good chances they will just mistake it for a common bag." The ranger seems to have an idea showing up in his mind, and before leaving moves closer and whispers:"We Pathfinders have something which could do for you...We call it Pathfinder Pouch. It's similar to a bag of holding, except that it's smaller and much harder to detect. Ask Loran if you want to buy it. Now I actually have to go...Good luck guys!."

Shirzon the Quarter |
==========
Neth 22nd
==========
The next morning, Shirzon wakes up early and gets dressed quickly. Once Merephel is up, Shirzon nods to her human friend before slipping out of their shared room. "We have a lot of work to do today. We should ask around about the Razmir stuff before we head to their recruitment tavern tonight. But, uh, take your time getting ready. Got to be prepared for the day and all that. Meet me and the boys in the tavern so we can get a bite to eat."
Shirzon is acting kind of shady. She's lying about why she wants Merephel to take some extra time coming to breakfast...
Calden Tigg |
=======
Neth 22nd
=======
Calden sleeps like a log, although he has various dreams about masked men. He pokes Korech awake. "Come on, we have to prep!"
"Oh, great thinking on the breakfast, Shirzon. She'll be eighteen today. Korech should be down here shortly. And of course I have the present. I'm not a dolt!" He pulls a small box with yellow and orange ribbons from his pocket, to show Shirzon.
When Merephel makes her way down, she sees the others waiting for her at a table. Calden is beaming a cheerful smile. When she reaches the table he stands up to kiss her, once on each cheek. "You didn't think we'd forget, did you? Happy Birthday!" Once the others have had the chance to congratulate her, he digs the present out of his pocket; A small wrapped box with yellow and orange ribbons.
Upon opening the present, Merephel finds a well-crafted brooch in gold with a single large pearl. "The priest said it would help with your spellcasting. Something about retaining an image of the spells you've cast, so you could use one of them again..." He looks at the priestess, eager to see her reaction.
It's a Pearl of Power, level 1.
Korech |
Korech lets out a surprised snort as Calden wakes him up.
"Huh? Oh yeah... right."
Being a very, very, slight sleeper, Korech is dressed and downstairs very shortly after Calden. He awaits Merephel nervously, blurting out a quiet "Birthday!" with the others.
I hope she likes it, I hope she likes it, I hope she likes it, I hope she likes it...
Merephel Angorat |
Aww, that's a nice surprise you guys! Thank you!
Merephel walks downstairs, rubbing the sleep from her eyes. She is wearing a new pair of soft cotton pajamas, and looks only half awake.
When her companions surprise her with her present, she just stands there. It takes a few seconds for her to process this happy event. She bursts into tears, and proceeds to hug everyone several times each.
After several minutes of her crying, she finally composes herself, and looks at her present in more detail.
"You guys...it's....it's beautiful. I don't know how to thank you all. This is... such a tremendous gift. I hope I can learn to live up it. Thank you all so much."
She wipes away a few more tears.
Really, thank you guys. Couldn't have come on a better day too; real life is stressful today. Thanks so much!

▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔
After spending some time in The Forest Bounty to celebrate Merephel’s birthday while also tasting a gorgeous breakfast served you by Asina, you’re ready to leave the tavern where you have been staying the last night. Before you go, though, Asina comes closer and thanks each of you for having brought her here safe and sound. “Thank you guys, I would have never expected the travel to be so perilous. But thankfully you were there by my side and protected me. I won’t never be able to pay you back as much as you would deserve. Please, be safe in whatever mission brought you here…I like each one of you!” says the beautiful daughter of Trelvar Silvers with a lovely smile as she greets you one by one kissing you on your cheek.
Shirzon is the last one to be greeted, and after kissing her, Asina whispers in her ear: “I’ll miss you Noona. You’ve always been there to help me since I was only a child. It won’t be the same without you by my side, but I guess this is growing up. I’ll have to learn to take care of things myself. Sometimes I’ll cry and call your name, and you won’t be here, but…I’m supposed to become a woman sooner or later, and a woman cannot depend on someone else. Everything you taught me, everything you showed me will stay with me forever Shirry. I love you”, says Asina through clenched teeth before hugging Shirzon so tight that the half-orc regrets the bear’s grapple. A tear spills down Asina’s cheek, but the girl readily dries it and smiles. “Farewell, Noona. Show them what you can do!”
---
After bidding farewell to Asina, you go out on the city streets again. The first thing you’ve decided to do this morning is to scout the area around the Temple of Razmir to try and find out something more about the cultist you’re going to be joining soon. It takes a while for you to figure out where is the temple actually located, but after asking a few question around you’re pointed in the right direction by a kind half-elf passerby. The temple of Razmir lies near the center of town, surrounded by a number of local businesses and wealthy residences. As such, the city guard presence here is a bit higher than in the outlying areas of town. The temple takes up an entire block; busy streets surround it on all sides, making it difficult to approach without being seen, but since it’s morning now you easily manage to blend in with the crowds and take a closer look at both the temple and the area surrounding it.
Occupying an entire city block, the temple of Razmir is an imposing structure. Built of solid stone walls, the building stands two stories tall, with towers positioned every thirty feet along its circumference. These towers rise above the temple itself, each crowned with statues depicting the Living God. The temple has almost no windows, aside from a tall, stained-glass window on the east end depicting the mask of Razmir. The west end of the structure contains a courtyard, only accessible through a sealed barbican. Masked priests patrol the wall tops surrounding the courtyard, watching those below with a baleful attention.*
The businesses that surround the temple vary widely, from coopers to cobblers. All of these businesses appears to be very careful not to speak ill of the temple, as they have no way of knowing if those asking questions are actually out-of-uniform members of the cult. Most of the businessmen readily admit that the temple has done wonders to cut down on thievery, as the cult’s members beat those caught stealing and drag them into the temple for rehabilitation.
---
Members of the cult leave and enter the temple throughout the day, although no set schedule determines their comings and goings. They usually travel in groups numbering around six, with most dressed in white robes, and one or two dressed in gray or black. All wear identical iron masks.
The cultists often head out to the poor part of town to distribute bread and vegetables to the poor, all the while teaching them about the power of Razmir. Other groups visit local businesses to gather tithes and investigate problems. Once per day, a group leaves the temple to give praise to Razmir in a public speech in front of the temple. During the speech, which extols the power and virtue of Razmir, four acolytes of Razmir move through the crowd to collect donations. These rather insistent brutes claim that those who fail to donate are bound to attract the ire of the Living God.

I’ll be posting again at 12:00 P.M. GMT +1 (04:00 P.M. for Korech, 03:00 P.M. for Shirzon and Merephel), botting anyone who hasn’t acted yet.
Calden Tigg |
Calden stays close to Merephel, putting a hand on her shoulder for support. "Don't worry about that, Meph. I'm sure it'll look wonderful on you, and you're certainly fit to wear it. Nothing about 'learning to live up to', ok?" With that, and a slight squeeze of her shoulder, he seats himself to breakfast.
After breakfast, Calden heads up to grab his equipment, already carefully selected from his possessions. Wearing his old clothes from back in Kassen and his nondescript backpack, Calden seems rather average... I'm just a kid from the country who came to Tamran because I had enough of farming, and came her looking for a better life.
--
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
As they find their way to the temple, Calden looks up, impressed and rather intimidated. "That doesn't look inviting at all..."
--
Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22
As they spot the parties heading out to feed the poor, things start to make sense for Calden. "Caring for the poor means they aren't all bad. Although maybe it's just to gain the sympathy of city folk..."
While listening to the speech, something draws his eye. That's just low! And they even dare to ask donations after that? Calden tries to warn the others, without attracting attention to their group. [smaller]"Keep a hand on your pouch," he whispers. When the acolyte comes to them for donation, Calden tries to see what other people give. A silver? Would I be eager to part with silver, if I'm just a country lout? Instead, he grabs four coppers from his belt pouch and hands them over to the acolyte.
Merephel Angorat |
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (9) + 10 = 19
Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
After they finish eating, Merephel, somewhat reluctantly, changes out of her new clothes into her old traveling clothes.
'The better to look the part.' She thinks to herself.
When they arrive at the temple, she just spends several seconds staring at the building, and has to catch herself from standing out in the crowd.
Merephel is not often speechless.
.
.
.
.
Later, while observing the cultists at their speech, she is oblivious to the goings-on that Calden spotted. Still, she pulls out her coin purse and follows his lead. In go four coppers from her as well.
"They seem nice enough, I suppose..."
Shirzon the Quarter |
Shirzon returns Asina's embrace, trying to hold back her tears. She whispers back, "I love you, too, Asina. I'll come and visit you when I can, I promise, and I'll write you letters. Listen... I know you can find your own strength. But I thought I could do everything myself when I was your age, too. Don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it. You're a smart one, and I'm sure you'll make lots of new friends; relying on them and letting them rely on you will make you stronger." Shirzon wipes away the water that's starting to form in her eyes with her palms, then smiles at Asina before giving her one last farewell in Orc: "Do widzenia!*"
---
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18
Shirzon nods in agreement with Calden's assessment of the temple, adding in a simple "Yikes."
---
Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18
Catching Calden's whisper, Shirzon pulls out her coin purse and drops a silver and five coppers in the collection plate. She places her coins back in her pocket, keeping her hand on it. Ire of Razmir, huh? They sound like I did back in the day when I would shake other kids down for their pocket change.
---
*Until we see each other again
Korech |
=======
At the tavern
=======
Korech is relieved and delighted by Merephel's response to the gift, happy to see such harmony among the group. He leans over to receive Asina's kiss on the cheek and gives her a shy, craggy smile.
"You are good person. We be safe. Shirzon tough, she keep us safe if we want or not."
========
At the temple
========
Korech goes hooded and keeps a few steps back from the rest of the group, trying to figure out how to go quietly in a city. It doesn't take long before he realizes he's attracting attention to himself by trying to be sneaky, and he instead adopts a more purposeful walk, hood down.
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23
Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 8 = 12
Between visiting businesses and asking questions, Korech mutters quietly to the group.
"Merchants no like cult, but not want say."
While at the speech, Korech becomes engrossed with the charismatic proselytizing, and is snapped out of it by Calden's whisper. Realizing he has a lot of money on him, Korech keeps very close watch on his coin, but donates a silver nonetheless. He remains determined not to attract attention.
A silver is a lot of money, but I have big weapons. Or maybe I'm donating my last coin because I believe so deeply.

▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔
After scouting the area around the temple and witnessing the cultist’s methods, you get back to the Forest Bounty, where an hearty meal awaits you. Asina serves you personally. She appears to have already made herself at home*. After eating and drinking, you buy the Pathfinder bag from Loran. The man leads you in a cellar full of adventuring gear and, after being paid, he hands you the item you’re looking for.
---
Just after buying the Pathfinder bag from Loran, you greet Asina again and get out on the streets again. You spend the whole afternoon asking around the locals about Razmiri cultists. Most of the people who know anything about the cult and its dealings are either in the temple’s employ or too afraid to talk. This makes getting any information about the temple especially difficult**. The half-orcs do not contribute that much, but thanks to Merephel’s great social skills and Calden’s surprising ability to convince people to trust him and confess things they wouldn’t have said to their own relatives, you manage to gather a lot of information in only 5 hours.
---
Informations gathered
• The minions of Razmir are all brainwashed, giving up everything they own to blindly follow the Living God (true, to some extent). Those deemed unworthy are sent to Razmiran to be devoured by the hungry god.
• The cultists take in far more money from the locals than they could ever possibly use for their work in the city. The extra coin funds the buildup of an army that will conquer all of Avistan.
• The cultists beat and steal from those who refuse to believe.
• The Living God is said to visit his temples on occasion. He could be in Tamran right now.
• More than one person has gone into the temple and has never been seen again. Most assume those who have vanished have simply joined the faith.
• The leader of the temple is a woman who wears blue robes and a cowl. She is a medusa, and uses the cowl to hide her snakes.
• There is no Living God. The “faith” is merely a cover for a vast and powerful guild of thieves.
---
During the hours spent gathering information, you also had the chance to buy the last pieces of equipment you could need for your mission***.

* You will need to pay 2sp each for the meal.
** I have rolled the Diplomacy checks to gather information for you. I’ve assumed you would split in two groups to optimize your chances of success. The first group is composed of Merephel and Korech. The second one consists of Calden and Shirzon. You can see the dice rolls below, in the GM Rolls section.
*** Please use the Discussion Thread to tell me what items in particular you would like to purchase.

Shirzon the Quarter |
As the group puts together its final preparations to infiltrate Razmir's cult, Shirzon makes sure her things are hidden in the Pathfinder Bag, and that her dagger is tucked safely away in a hidden place.
Sleight of Hand to conceal the +1 dagger: 1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 8 + 2 = 17
"Who knows what rumors we picked up have any bearing on the truth. But it sounds like whatever these Razmir weirdos are up to, it's worth putting an end to. Once we're in there, we can hopefully snoop around and get the information that Reginar needs," Shirzon says, making sure her things are ready to go. "I guess we go in and just pretend like we're down on our luck, and want to join up so we can help the poor like the priests do around town (when they're not shaking down crowds for coin - we probably shouldn't say that part out loud). Everyone ready?"
Calden Tigg |
Calden grows worried, the more information they learn. Back at the tavern, he gives voice to his concerns. "This cult just seems like a thug gang, although it's to separate fact from rumour. How can this Living God visit his temples, if he doesn't even exist? Also, it'll be hard to pretend to want to join them. Villains! It seems that posing as interested followers won't be without risk. Maybe we can try to join as two couples? That way it won't cause suspicion if we stick together and keep an eye out for each other. Me and Merephel could be brother and sister? What do you think, Meph? Korech and Shirzon could have met in the wild, maybe... Also, I picked up some more silvers to take along. Maybe that will interest them, and I might say that I stole them when I left the farm." He shudders at the thought...

After spending having gathered enough information about Razmiri cultist, the sun drops and you know that it’s time for you to go to the Ranger’s Lament. You had gathered some information about that place too, so you easily reach it.
Sitting in the shadow of the Temple to Razmir, the Ranger’s Lament is a simple establishment. Made from solid wood timbers, the one-story building is comprised primarily of a large common room, with a bar and a kitchen off to one side. Although open for business, very few people appear to be inside, despite the fact that many of the other local establishments seem quite full.
When you arrive at the tavern, you find no one inside other than the barkeep, who welcomes you and tells you that you can take any seat in the house. Shortly after your arrival, another young man arrives and takes a seat in the corner. He’s a blonde half-elf, with light-blue eyes and a muscular build*. He doesn’t appear to be willing to talk with you, but you can always try if you wish so.
---
Twenty minutes after the your arrival, a group of six masked cultists arrive, three dressed in white robes, two in gray robes, and one in black robes. They look about the room and move toward the stage.
After stepping up onto the stage, the figure in the black robes turns to the audience, his face hidden behind an iron mask. With a strong voice, he calls out, “You have come here to seek the power and glory of Razmir, and I am here to tell you that he has found you worthy!”
At that, all of the other priests chant in one voice, “All praise the Living God!”
“He is proud of you,” the black-robed figure continues, “for taking this, the first of 31 steps to enlightenment, the path of righteousness, the stairs to power and glory. Razmir is the one true god. What other god so richly rewards those who follow him? What other god lives among his people, guiding them with his wisdom and his might? What other god can lead you to true salvation? None of them! Only Razmir can offer you the power, the fortune, and the glory that you desire. Will you join him?” He folds his arms and waits for an answer.

I’ll be posting again at 07:30 P.M. GMT +1 (11:30 A.M. for Korech, 10:30 A.M. for Shirzon and Merephel), botting anyone who hasn’t acted yet.
Shirzon the Quarter |
Shirzon sits with Korech, a little disturbed by the empty tavern, when usually a bar at this hour would be filled. She itches for a drink to take off the creepy edge, but she decides against it to keep sharp. Besides, if this weird cult controls it, there's no telling whether their drinks are any good.
---
Thirty-one steps?!
Shirzon is bewildered by the masked figure's proclamations, and she can feel her skin shudder and raise with goosebumps. Nonetheless, she looks to Korech and puts on a strong face, nodding to her friend to lend some support. She swallows hard, then stands up and says in a firm voice, "I will join him!"
Korech |
Having agreed to pretend to be a couple with Shirzon, although chafing at the 'in the wild' line, Korech makes his way into the tavern. Thankfully, he requires no help in looking shabby and down on his luck.
Here goes. I can do it I can do it...
Meeting Shirzon's eyes, Korech swallows noisily before he stands with her.
"I join too!"
Calden Tigg |
Calden tries to keep it from showing on his face, but he falls from one surprise into another when the black-robed figure speaks. Reward? All they do is take. And how can he claim to be the one true god? People know about Erastil, and Abadar, and Irori. Don't they?
It hits him that they'll be on their own again, after this. Everyone is too scared to alert the guard. Or maybe they're bought off. We're surrounded by people in the city, but we'll be just as alone as we were in the crypt. Well, we managed that. Let's hope we'll do as well now.
When the figure in black calls for their answer, Calden looks at Merephel and squeezes her hand. I can't expect her to say that! Determined, he stands up, jerking Merephel upright as well. "Yes, we will join!" he says in a slightly quivering voice.
Merephel Angorat |
Merephel had been working up her courage to lie through her teeth, and betray her Goddess, when Calden solved her problem for her.
'Oh, thank the Goddess for Calden!'.
She breathed a sigh of relief. The smile the Razmirans saw was genuine, though surely not for the reasons they would have suspected.

The black-robed priest congratulates all of you on your wise decision. He then announces to the barkeep that the temple will pay for all of their food and drink, and all of the masked figures take up seats with the you and the half-elf to discuss the promise of Razmir (except the black-robes priest, who remains on the podium). At this point, the barkeep makes his way around the bar and takes orders for everyone, bringing you ale, wine, water, and food. Do you guys eat or drink anything?
