Taking 20 on Perception checks - I usually allow players to take 20 on their Perception checks when they have plenty of time to investigate the area where they are. For the current situation, though, I wouldn't allow it for both a narrative and mechanical reason. The narrative one is that allowing you to take 20 will prevent me from actually giving certain encounters a chance to truly happen in the game; also, it would force you to spend an unreasonable amount of time searching the mark. From a mechanical point of view, given the conditions, it would take almost an hour to look everywhere in the intersection for a sword mark: it would force you to remove the garbage, clean the walls, examine closely every inch of the tunnels and so on.
Fair enough. I always feel (and rule) that 'narrative' trumps any rule so I'm glad you're running the game that way as well. Anything for a good story. If getting lost is good for the story, then let's get lost. :)
Lorenzo has no way of knowing which way to go so if Sev can't find the sword marking then we'll go where the ladies suggested.
Game on!

What? Where? Who? Me?
I don't know what you're talking about. :)

Starting tomorrow I will be on vacation until the 8th (EST). I have a small chance that I'll be able to post but I wouldn't count on it. Since, at the moment, Sev is largely afraid and quiet anyway, you can just assume he's lost his voice or is too nervous to speak until I get back.
Lorenzo Mancini |
GM: would it possible to get an idea of how hurt the enemies are?
It will help us making better decision regarding who to try and hit.
Thanks.
Lorenzo Mancini |
For now, they're completely unscathed.
For some reason, I thought I had added an AoO attack contingency (and I hit!) to my last post but it's not there.
Game on!
Sev. |
I'm back from vacation so I can jump in on the next round, thanks for the competent botting GM!
Lady Faustinia Xerysis |
Welcome back! :)
GM Giuseppe |
Hey guys sorry for my absence, I've been sick for a few days. I'm going to post as soon as possible :)

Get well soon. Thanks for letting us know.
Lady Faustinia Xerysis |
No worries! Hope you're well soon.
Sev. |
GM Guiseppe, I'm back, you don't need to bot for me anymore.
GM Giuseppe |
Yeah, I've not posted yesterday to give you the chance to post, but since I saw you didn't post, I just went on and botted you. You're welcome to join the fight right now however :)
Sev. |
I didn't post because you had posted an action for me, I assumed that since Sev had "Acted" I should wait until the next recap. Is that no correct? I was just trying not to confuse things.
GM Giuseppe |
Yeah, somehow I forgot that I had already posted actions for Sev since he was the first in initiative. Feel free to ignore my post's first part then and post your actions for the current round. Sorry for the confusion!
Lorenzo Mancini |
Pardon the interruption...
I am GMing a fairly fast-paced PBP game here and have room for one (or maybe two) people.
I'm running the module Ire of the Storm, which takes place south of Sargava; there's more information in the campaign tab.
Your PC would enter the story as level 2 and be expected to end up level 5 or 6. I may even continue the game with another 'module'. However, I'm not promising that just yet because by the time we're done, there may be other things that I want to GM.
If interested, take a look and see if this is something you would enjoy playing. Please PM me so we don't clutter up Giuseppe's thread anymore than necessary.
Game on!
Lady Faustinia Xerysis |
I honestly wasn't sure how this was going to shake out. I thought it was roughly 50/50 whether you all would want to stay and help or flee with Faustinia. Certainly she doesn't need to be told twice to run. ;D

DC 15 Knowledge (nobility) check while analyzing the weapon to learn more about it.
- 3 crossbows

- 2 potions of cure light wounds

When we get a chance to stop and not be running, Faustinia can take a look at that sword.

Catina, I just paid attention to your stats and then looked at your character sheet.
Aren't you hindering yourself as a cleric with that CHA of 8?
What are your plans for Catina?
I noticed you have a high strength but it doesn't seem like you are playing her as a melee fighter.
Would lowering your STR and raising your CHA not be beneficial and more in line with your character?
Just wondering...

I will eventually becomes a capable melee combatant fighting with glaive, it will just takes her a while to get there. Things will become easier for her once it becomes clear who the 'enemy' is, and when it's clear what they're fighting for.
Low Charisma indeed isn't ideal for a Cleric, but it's just a choice that I won't rely on channeling all that much. Devil-spawn has a -2 Charisma penalty, so taking my Charisma to above-average levels would have taken a lot of points. Finally, low Charisma also fits well with my vision of her character and her low self-esteem.

Definitely enjoyed the roleplay. The safehouse holds a nice cast of characters, and it was a nice change of pace to have some time for conversation after the hectic flight through the sewers. In-character post will follow later today.
Just one question I had so far: I noticed that you used Arael and Arhael interchangeably. Which one is the correct spelling, or are there (God forbid) two characters with almost the same name? :P

The correct spelling is Arael. Sometimes I put an useless "h" in his name because for some reason, in our Italian translation, that "h" is present. Anyway, let's try to keep to Arael as the original and correct spelling.
GM Giuseppe |
A note for Sev_ I don't know if you're planning on actually asking questions about Arael around, but should you be wanting to do so, please take into account the following notes.
Roll for duration - Gathering info requires 1d4 hours per attempt. If you want to calculate how many attempts you have at your disposal, you can roll for duration in your own post.
Describe the questions and the interlocutors - I would like to know who you're asking your questions to (in general, of course) and what kind of questions (also here, in general) you're asking.

Lorenzo did not want to wake up the entire neighborhood when he went to get his sisters. He guided a sleepy 12-year old and carried a sleeping 7-year old back to their place.
Luckily both girls went back to sleep quickly leaving their older brother with much to think about how he was going to care for them in the near future.
I believe that either I completely failed to convey a good representation of the situation or you didn't read well enough what I've written in the last 4-5 posts. Walking in Westcrown by night would be crazy, and Lorenzo would have certainly occured in some trouble doing so. This is pretty central to the AP, so please try and remember it. The idea, as Janiven said several times, is that you sleep at the safe house for this day and return to your home once the sun rises again.

Ah, that explains things. Must be confusing indeed, to have the adventure in two languages with minor details like that differing. Although, weren't you the translator for Pathfinder in Italy? :P

Yes I'm, but I'm not the only one of course. And also, I wasn't yet when Council of Thieves came out.

Hey all, sorry I missed posting yesterday. I wasn't feeling well, and I've been unexpectedly busy for most of today. I'm very interested to see where this goes next! :)
GM Giuseppe |
Hey guys, I've just posted a reply to each of you. Please read it with attention although I'm going to ask you not to answer, or at least to answer without extending your conversations. I need every PC and NPC in the safe house to listen to Janiven for the moment. I'm going to post again this afternoon, moving the story forward and revealing Janiven's plan to rescue Arael!

I'm fine with stopping the NP talk so we can move the story forward.
I'm sure there will be other times to interact with these NPCs.

Hey guys, if you can please make this test I'll be very glad. It would be very useful for a series of reasons I cannot explain without giving you some spoilers though.
I need to know how much do you like each NPC. This judgement is intendes as based on the player's perspective and not on that of his character. Please rate them on a scale of five. Below there's a template you can copy/paste.

Hey all, would anyone be able to provide a screenshot of the current map?
Lorenzo Mancini |
GM: if I may...
Have you considered using what is called 'block initiative'?
In this instance, we would wait for Sev to act in Round 1.
Then you act for the NPCs in Round 1.
Then we would all act: Catina, Faustinia, and Lorenzo for Round 1 and Sev for Round 2.
It keeps going like this.
There are several advantages: a) people with high initiatives act first (respects their ability), b) all PCs act in the same 'break' (no waiting for anyone except for the first round), and c) we don't have to guess what the NPCs do in order for the PCs to act.
This last one is important because we could potentially change our actions depending on what's going on. Catina and/or Lorenzo may want to heal a companion who had just been hurt or a PC may elect to drink a potion if he's been hit badly.
Thoughts?
Sev. |
Going to second Fabians suggestion. There may be some instances where the enemies act between the players, but for the most part I've used, and seen others use, the block initiative to great effect. It really helps players not feel left out of the action for too long.
