The high–ceilinged workshop/library is lined with mostly empty shelves, and a trio of great leaded windows looks out over the university lawn. A staggering array of books, scrolls, maps, and curios, including shrunken heads, tribal masks, and bits of pottery, lie scattered all over the floor, apparently pulled from the shelves. The room is otherwise crowded with overturned tables, desks, and cabinets.
This part of the description was not given with the introduction of Dr Crowl. I only noticed when Jominda wanted to refer to the mess, that the details are missing.
Kendra Lorrimor _ |
"No, we haven't." Kendra says with worry on her face. "I mean, we heard there was a beast apprehended, but we didn't know it broke into the university. What kind of monster could have done this destruction?"
Kendra Lorrimor _ |
"I don't suppose you have been able to make a thorough investigation on which way it was heading precisely, and what you have stocked there?"
GM Foxy |
The simple wooden door leading from the far side of the workshop into the auditorium has been broken off its hinges.
Following the trail of destruction into the auditorium shows that the far door there leading to the back foyer is broken too. Paneled in oak, the auditorium contains a sunken, 5-foot-deep central area lined with books, tribal fetishes, and curiosities. A small stage and lectern stand in the center of this area, which is edged with a low oak rail, worn smooth from the touch of years of students gazing into the Master’s lecture room below.
Following through that broken door leads into a foyer and there is the broken back door of the Antiquities Department. This door - made of one inch thick iron - was originally locked with a built in lock but currently it is locked with a makeshift padlock and only crude repairs have been made.
Also workshop’s windows have clearly not been opened for many years, as evidenced by the build-up of grime around them. However, the center window, though now shut, has no such grime.
GM Foxy |
"It broke in at the back door and went straight into this workshop. But that's the mystery. The only thing that may be missing is the seasage effigy. It stood there between these other fetishes. And we might still find it somewhere in this mess. I'd say it was just here for the destruction. What else would you expect from a monster?" Dr. Crowl tells.
Jominda Fallenbridge __ |
Jominda wanders off checking the area.
Perception Workshop: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27
Perception Auditorium: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
Perception Foyer: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26
After Jominda is out of sight you hear a stern voice from the auditorium scolding someone "Don't touch this! That is not for the students!"
Kendra Lorrimor _ |
Perception Workshop: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 1 = 21
Perception Auditorium: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 1 = 17
Perception Back Door: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 1 = 20
"hmm, what area of the university do you work in, Professor? I was just wondering if that window there is opened often."
Upon hearing the stern scolding voice, Kendra hurries into the auditorium.
GM Foxy |
"I'm the head of the Antiquities Department. " Dr. Crowl answers. That's why I'm busy getting this mess back in order. He sighs. "And no, these windows are never opened. We don't want to risk that a draught messes up all the papers we work on.
As Kendra moves to the door she sees Jominda leaving the auditorium to the Foyer and a woman - probably a professor - staring holes in Jominda's back and then correcting the position of some item in a shelf.
Herm Dunlaven |
Herm will listen to the professors description of the beast and the events that unfolded. Nodding his head, then Herm will take a look around the room.
work shop: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19
auditorium: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
back door: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
Herm will look at the shelves in the work shop, Hearing the yelling Herm will follow Kendra drawing his hammer. Upon seeing that Jominda is getting into trouble, Herm will note the large foot print. "Did someone witness the beast inside? That is a rather LARGE foot print in the floor there."
GM Foxy |
It is funny how everyone makes the rolls without going to the area involved first. Just because there is a spoiler. Also getting rolls to beat the given DC is a precondition too ;)
"What are you doing with that hammer?!?" Dr. Crowl calls out terrified. "This is a university, we don't need more destruction."
From down in the lecturing Pit the stern Professor looks up. "Are you from the repair team or why are you wielding such a large tool here? If you make any scratch you're in trouble Mister." she scolds Herm.
Herm Dunlaven |
"I ran here under the pretense that something was happening, maybe next time ser your voice won't be so shrill that I will think a woman is under attack by a large monster." Herm nods with a slight grin and move over to Jominda.
"Please don't scare the men as such, and the hammer is for protection. I will put it away now." Herm puts the hammer back in the holster upon his back.
GM Foxy |
Just for clarification. Behind you is Dr. Crowl. In front of you in the lecturing pit is the female Professor who scolded Jominda and Herm. Jominda isn't in the auditorium anymore as she moved to the foyer. And now Herm moved to the foyer too.
The Professor shakes her head at so much ignorance and moves on. As she walks past Dr. Crowl she mutters "There should be guards at the entrance to check who is allowed in here. No manners these people today!"
Jominda Fallenbridge __ |
Jominda comes back from the iron back door. "Is the old spinster gone?" she asks Herm while peeking into the auditorium. As she doesn't see her anymore Jominda returns to Kendra and Dr. Crowl.
"Look what I found." she tells holding up a small bell tied to a silver wire. "That was at the back door. Which is funny. It is much too small to be a doorbell."
Herm Dunlaven |
"what do you make of it?" Herm beats a hasty retreat after not realizing the woman was a woman.
We should invite her to join the carnival people with Kaleb
Kendra Lorrimor _ |
Kendra frowns. "Herm, why would you think the monster returned? I doubt that professor would've said things were not for students... "She looks apologetically at the professor."My apologies, Dr. Cowl. I hope I wasn't this much trouble here when I was younger."
"I remarked upon the windows because it seems one had been opened recently." She points out the missing grime.
Know Arcana: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (8) + 8 = 16
"There also seems to have been cast an alarm on the back door... And Herm noticed some rather large footprints. There seems to have been more going on here than a simple beast breaking through the wall and wreaking havoc."
Kendra Lorrimor _ |
"Because of that little bell" Kendra says, pointing at the bell Jominda's holding.
Turning back to professor Cowl, she continues "I don't know why the window was opened... That's important to figure out, I think."
She walks over to the window to look outside.
Jominda Fallenbridge __ |
Jominda looks at the bell and back at Kendra. She feels stupid for not knowing what the connection is. But all Alendru tried to teach her were cantrips. And they have no material components. So the concept is foreign to her.
Kendra Lorrimor _ |
Kendra looks outside, but while the windows are fine for letting the light in and giving the room a more open feeling, they don't allow for thorough investigation of the outside.
"We should check if there's any clues outside. Maybe more of those huge footprints."
She turns round to the professor again. "This seasage effigy, what was it for? Is there any story that tells about its power?"
Kendra Lorrimor _ |
Kendra frowns in thought. "Was there anything else here of import or magical power that you haven't yet found?"
She looks around the room again to see if there's any pattern to the destruction.
Harrold Bathshforth |
"We had an interesting time before we came here. If everyone had taken things at face value then, we may have lost our town to undead." Harrold says as he climbs out the window unsteadily, "A sketch would be useful. I must ask, if the culprit was found, did they find the effigy on his person?"
Survival: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
Bending down and feeling a depression in the soil, "Where did they catch the beast? Precisely."
Harrold Bathshforth |
"Come kneel here." Harrold says patting the ground next to him.
"You see how the grass here is flatter than around it? And how some of the blades are broken? If you are gentle you can also feel an impression in the dirt here." He says pointing to examples as he speaks.
Do the footprints go anywhere? Or come from anywhere
Herm Dunlaven |
Herm looks out the window, looking around for clues.
Survival: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 1 = 11
"It just gave up? Didn't this beast go on murderous rampages? Or so they say?"
Kendra Lorrimor _ |
"Harrold," Jominda says, "Do you mean something else came through the window than the beast?"
Kendra Lorrimor _ |
"Considering that's the only window that was opened, I think we should assume someone did. Which means there were two people here - one large footprint and one normal size."
Kendra Lorrimor _ |
"The apprehended monster?" Kendra wonders.
Kendra Lorrimor _ |
Kendra smiles through the open window at the excited woman.
"First things first, dear." Turning to Herm, she says "I believe you carried my father's books?"
Herm Dunlaven |
"I have them yes, just a moment" Herm goes and retrieves a large satchel with all of the books that the Professor borrowed.
"Dr. Can you tell me what the interest behind all these books was?"
