The Festering Blot | Tarnbreaker’s Trail

The First Seeker's meeting room is a lavish space, with several lush couches and armchairs surrounding a wide, low table.

First Seeker Luwazi Elsebo appears uncharacteristically extravagant, having exchanged her typical stationwear for a sleek, fashionable suit in a shade of copper that matches the Starfinder Society logo emblazoned on the table. Behind her stands the towering vesk leader of the Acquisitives faction, wearing a suit of ceremonial armor.

Luwazi smiles and gestures to the seats. “A pleasure to see you all. I trust you've heard about tonight's gala?

She looks around to see if any of you have. All any of you have heard is that there is going to be an announcement by Luwazi Elsebo about her next step as the leader of the Starfinder Society. There is a lot of speculation about what that announcement might be, but nothing conclusive.

I have a rather important announcement to make, so we've decided to use the opportunity to entertain and impress representatives of the various interests who have helped the Starfinder Society through our setbacks with the Scoured Stars Incident.

Gesturing wide with her arms, she says “That's where you come in.

As some of the shining stars of the newest Starfinder Society agents, I'd like to have you mingle with the guests so they can see for themselves what we've been able to accomplish. It's nothing too fancy; I'd just like you all to be polite and talk about some of your experiences with the Society so far. We're expecting some government dignitaries, investors, corporate interests, and the like, so be sure to stay on your best behavior. Also, don't be afraid to brag a bit—it's our goal to impress them.

But don't be stupid,” the armored vesk breaks in.

Luwazi Elsebo glances over her shoulder and grins. “Have you all met Radaszam? He's certainly someone else you should be trying to impress.

Radaszam scowls. “Events like this never go as planned.

With a nod towards Luwazi, he explains “Luwazi's contracted one of my merc outfits, the Obsidian Spiders, to provide security for the night. I want to make sure that if anything goes down, you're working with my agents, rather than us all tripping over one another. So stay alert, but if anything happens, make sure you're talking to me about it rather than jumping in blindly.

The First Seeker nods and picks up the datapad. “I've singled out five guests who I would really like to make a good impression with. These folks should be your priority tonight, so I've compiled basic information about each of them here. Things will start up in about an hour in the Skyreach Room.

Looking expectantly at your group, she then asks “Any questions before we go?

"This unit weapon system is not very concealed, what rules of etiquette that we will need to observe? Who are the primary units that you wish the favorable impressions made to and why are they so important to the Society?"

The Festering Blot | Tarnbreaker’s Trail

Luwazi replies “For this event, you will not need to conceal your weapons. You can dress up if you’d like, but it's not necessary. You're Starfinders, and there's a certain air of excitement that comes along with the armor and gear.

She then taps a few commands on her data pad and you all receive a small download with basic information.

The guests I would like you to impress are Iteration-177, Naiaj, Royo, Yrkris, and Zo!. I expect many of those names are already familiar to you.

Data provided is on slides 2-6.

I need everyone to roll a single culture check and then give me the names in the order you would like to know more about them. Once I have all the rolls, I can give out the information. You might want to spread out the names amongst the group.

This is a special mechanic for this scenario. One culture check for each player.

You can still ask questions of Luwazi as we are collecting those culture checks.

The Festering Blot | Tarnbreaker’s Trail

I’m sure each of them has their own interests. I expect you to mingle with them and convince them of your competence. Some of them are members of the Starfinder Society from before the Scoured Stars incident. It would be good if they could see that the newer members are capable individuals.

As an agent of both the Second Seekers under Luwazi Elsebo and Radaszam's Acquisitives, Chikasa is rather pleased with the leadership delivering the briefing today. "Good to hear we're prepared for anything," the elderly ysoki says as he adjusts his glasses. "Just so we know what to look forward to, are there any rumors of groups that might be interested in crashing our little soiree?"

I'm always expecting trouble,” Radaszam says, but a moment later he shrugs. “I don't know of any plans specifically targeting this event, but my team and I have our eyes and ears open.

A dashing, but smug looking human in the briefing throws his arm over the back of his chair and leans back, a Cheshire grin spreads across his face. "Now this is my kinda mission. A party. No crazed fugutives? No haunted starships? Deadly parasites? hideous monsters? Phew, I am so glad you came to me Seeker, and you'll be glad too. The only things more dangerous than my pistol, are my dry wit, undeniable charm and my dashing, rogue-like good looks. Schmoozing is my specialty. When does this little pow-wow get started? Do I have time to put on something more suited for rubbing elbows with the cultural elite?"

Luwazi says “If there are no more questions, please make sure you arrive in the Skyreach room before the event. You have about three hours.

She leaves, no doubt off to handle another project before the announcement.

The group compares what they know about the various participants.

Seven of Eleven and Darkrunner-42 know that Iteration-177 is a relative newcomer to the Aspis Consortium. In addition to making waves by urging Consortium support of the Starfinders, they have an interest in religious artifacts and connections.

Electra Globes knows that Naiaj is a bleachling gnome with a fierce protectiveness of the Starfinders who encourages—some say demands— competence and teamwork from Society agents. She’s a venture-captain who served long before the Scoured Stars incident.

Chikasa and Darkrunner-42 know that the ysoki Royo has something of a rivalry with Historia-7 and the Dataphiles faction, and he tends to snub individuals who he perceives to rely overmuch on technological “crutches.” He’s also an elected member of the Forum, the Starfinder Society’s governing council.

Seven of Eleven and Darkrunner-42 know that the alien symbiotic Ykris represents CeriCore Labs. Business-wise, the corporation has very little to gain from the Starfinder Society’s endeavors, but it nevertheless made a substantial donation; rumors suggest the contribution was someone’s pet project.

Elektra Globes knows that Zo! is an undead media mogul well known throughout the Pact Worlds, always looking for an idea for a new show, strategies to improve his ratings, or other lucrative entertainment deals. His organization funded the recent Society expedition to Salvation’s End, and he is keenly interested in further exploration of the false moon.

It is now time to slot your boons. This scenario has special significance to the Acquisitives and Second Seeker (LE) factions so you are encouraged to slot one of those two for your faction. Other than that, there are no recommendations for specific boons.

Please let me know if you have played #1-00 Claim to Salvation and credited it to the character you are playing here.

Chikasa laughs to himself, "Heh! Royo certainly sounds like an interesting fellow. Whoever heard of a ysoki that is suspicious of technology?" Royo sounds like a backwards curmudgeon. You definitely don't want either of us androids engaging with him. In fact, it's better if you don't mention or emphasize our presence to him at all.

Darkrunner considers the lot of combined information thoughfully and who he might like to focus on...

I have a bit of experience with business people, having consulted on corporate espionage work. Ykris is an interesting subject along those lines. Perhaps we will impress it by detecting the motives of its company's contribution. Or, if that would offend it we can figure it out with subtlety and additionally figure out its personal motives.

Radaszam nods to Haastaskin. "Sensible. Give me a minute, I'll see what we can arrange."

With a wave, he says "Feel free to continue with the briefing while I check what I can do."

He pulls out a data pad and starts working with it. True to his word, a few minutes later he says "Here is a channel you can use if you need to update the Obsidian Spiders of anything. Please use discretion." With that, he sends you the information.

The Festering Blot | Tarnbreaker’s Trail

A few hours later, you make your way to the Skyreach Reom.

The lift doors open into the Skyreach Room, a classy space made breathtaking by large windows set into the vaulted ceiling, providing a shining view of the Armada orbiting Absalom Station and the galaxy beyond. A low stage with black skirting and a sleek podium overlooks the room from the far end of the hall. A dozen or so guests, representing a surprising array of races, mingle in twos and threes, while servers in sharp vests bring around a variety of bizarre snacks and drinks. A curly-haired AV technician arranges the wiring along one side of the stage, and Luwazi stands at the other side speaking with a damaya lashunta man.

People are wandering around, talking to each other. You should have no problems finding the guests Luwazi wants you to talk with.

The Festering Blot | Tarnbreaker’s Trail

This is a social influence encounter. It will be done as two sets of four rounds of actions. The individual ‘rounds’ are kept abstract.

Each round you will choose one guest to interact with. Please be sure to clearly state which guest you are interacting with each round,

The end goal is to impress as many of the people on the list as you can. Each guest has different skills you can use to impress them, and some have other things that can be done without a skill roll. You may attempt a Sense Motive check as your action in a round to find out what skills can influence a specific guest. You can also engage in light banter to try and get an idea of their interests.

Repeeated use of the same skill will incur penalties. Repeated failures can run the risk of offending the guest or demonstrating incompetence; after three failed attempts to influence a given guest using the same skill, that guest is no longer interested in speaking with the group and cannot be impressed.

You can use your action in a round to Aid Another someone else’s attempt that round.

If you have questions, please ask.

As a fellow ysoki, Chikasa approaches Royo first. He bows slightly to the Forum member and introduces himself.

"Evening, sir," the elder ysoki says in greeting, "I'm Chikasa, or Chik Chik if you prefer. I'm a recent initiate of the Society, though I've admired the Society's work for many years." He adjusts his glasses adjusts his weight to lean more on his staff. "How are things among the Forum? Seems the Society has been through a lot in recent months."

The Festering Blot | Tarnbreaker’s Trail

Royo wears immaculate formalwear about 20 years out of date; his tawny fur is beginning to go silver around his whiskers and paws. He wears elegant spectacles, having refused corrective surgeries due to the hours or even days in which he would be unable to read following such a procedure. Tucked beneath one arm is a small folio of physical paper. He stands among a circle of scholars engaged in an exuberant discussion of esoteric topics.

When Chik-Chik introduces himself, the elderly ysoki barely acknowledges him. “You have the wrong person if it’s politics of the Society you want to discuss.” Holding up his folio of papers and shaking them, he says “I’m a scholar, one who does real research into the physical records!

Tell me, youngster, what sort of education do you have? Anything of particular academic merit that I might have heard of?

You can still roll a Sense Motive if you want.

Ykris appears as an iridescent, segmented insect clinging to the scalp of a clean-cut, immaculately dressed half-elf man. Upon closer inspection, it becomes clear that many of Ykris's spiny legs pierce the man's skin and deeply into his flesh, particularly along the base of the man's skull and down the back of his neck.

Turning to the two of you.
Greetings, Starfinders. I welcome the opportunity to support your organization. Exploring the vast and meeting new lifeforms.

Your organization has a strong history of exploration, cooperation and the scholars you support. CeriCore Labs isn’t looking for any direct payback, but I am always happy to hear more about your organization.

Ykris is ingratiated to anyone who shares gossip about the Starfinder Society. You can do this with a Culture check.
It respects anyone knowledgeable enough to hold a discussion about work in cybernetics and biotech augmentations. You can do this with a Life Science or Medicine check.

They also talk about the problems of adapting biological upgrades to the different races and some of the unique challenges different races have.

Seven of Eleven talks about some of the things they have witnesssed, and how the society has adapted to the flood of new recruits.

Reread the text in the scenario. I am going with Life Science and Medicine being two different skills. You only take the penalty if it is the same skill twice.

I will reword things in my next influence summary.

Originally one of Eox's native elebrians, Zo! retains the characteristic appearance of that race even in undeath: an elegant build with refined features and an extended cranium. His face now bears a permanent rictus grin, which adds another level of enthusiasm to his exaggerated interactions.

Zo! looks at Vandor and says “I’m hoping to find people who can do Action Scenes!” The way he says it you can hear the Capital Letters. “My shows air all over the Pact Worlds and beyond! Their audience is vast!

Well, he certainly is a showman.

Zo! is particularly impressed by PCs who can demonstrate their abilities through Acrobatics or Athletics checks.

BTW, the exclamation point is part of his name.

@Haastaskin The skills asked for aren’t limited to the typical social skills. See the information that Vandor discovered about impressing Zo! For an example of that. Also there is no penalty for attempting a Sense Motive check. You could also use your action to attempt an Aid Another on a skill.

I will not count your perception check as one of your actions.

Royo smiles broadly as Chik-Chik talks. “Exactly! So many people allow themselves to become dependent on computers and augmentations. They forget how ephemeral the digital world is, how easy it is for someone to just hack a system and change records.

Darkrunner, enjoying his conversation with Ykris so much (and perceiving that he feels the same way) decides to dive deep on the future of the cybernetics and augmentations field they'd been discussing, and how CeriCore Labs might play a part in that future.

Seven of Eleven walks over to Iteration-177

"Greetings this unit is named Seven of Eleven and it is pleasant to meet you"

Sense Motive: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (9) - 1 = 8

Second Seekers (Luwazi Elsebo)

Male CG human spacefarer envoy 2 | SP 12/12 HP 16/16 | RP 4/4 | EAC 12; KAC 13 | Fort +0; Ref +4; Will +3 | Init: +5 | Perc: +4, SM: +5 | Speed 30ft | | Spells: None. | Active conditions: None.

"Shows you say? I've always thought I would make a great action hero. I've got the looks, the charisma and most importantly; I've got the skills to back it up!"

Vandor unholsters his pistol and grabs a pair of serving tongs off of the buffet in his other hand. Leaping up on a table he proceeds to give Zo! a demonstration of his agility in stage combat, twirling his pistol around like an actor from one of those old Akitonian gunslinger holo-films, and wielding the tongs as a makeshift 'sword' pretending to fence an invisible opponent.

Acrobatics: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17

"Starfiners have to keep their skills sharp, we never know what kind of challenges we will face during missions, I'm sure the Society's members would be an almost endless pool of talent for your Action Scenes!"

The Festering Blot | Tarnbreaker’s Trail

Iteration-177 wears their sleek dark hair pulled back, in a sharp contrast to their silvery skin and the android's signature circuitry pattern shining nearly white. They wear Absalom Station's latest fashions in shades of black, white, and gray.

Iteration-177 smiles and says “Greetings, I’m Iteration-177.” as they extend their hand for a handshake. “Eleven what, if I may ask.

They seem friendly enough and interested in hearing about you.

Failed Sense Motive, so no skills directly given, No reason you can’t continue the conversation a little more if you want though.
