Darius grabs Thorgan and the pairs flies down the 200' shaft with the weight of the heavy dwarf and all his gear, weighing down the light magus.

As you breach the sanctity of the lower cavern the creature praising the glowing pillar turns and screams in slurred Common, “Be gone from my lady’s realm!”

Thorgan, using his dwarven sight can easily spot six other skum floating around in the various nooks and crannies of the cavern, ready to pounce.

I'm guessing Avelina heard the screams echoing upwards? If so, she will read her scroll and begin climbing down.

Sounds good. Take ten lets you move 1/2 move speed while using the rope, right? So you are at 285' now? Take ten lets you move your 10' climb speed, yes? So 290' now including the standard to cast the spell?

Yeah, that is correct. It's slow going (and will run out near the end, but no chance of falling. We will leave that option open if things sound like they are going sideways.

Thorgan grumbles at being lifted b the lithe magus, but finally relents as it seems the party has little other options beyond leaping 120ft and praying to their deities for a soft fall.

"Ahl'right, lad, if ye think tha's th' best yer magic can do..."

As the reach the cavern, Thorgan is quick to point out the ambush that awaits.

"A 'alf-dozen o' th' fish-frogs waitin' fer us..."

Am I reading the cavern right? It looks like we'd be swimming unless we're along the "rails" that ring the room we descended into.. at least until we get to the steps to the east? And that structure is up from the surface of the water? Does the "rail" seem like difficult terrain, slippery, etc?

Going back over the posts, I don't really see anything to support you all entering simultaneously, but if you wanted to go after Darius, then anyone at the middle would get two round of actions. Hawkwren could keep up with Darius but Artian would only have moved 80'. (20' per move action). I am assuming that you didn't yell back up to Avelina as you wouldn't also want to alert the enemies below since voices travel both ways.

I thought we were trying to go down together.

Hawk flies down into the chamber and readies to fire an arrow at the apparent leader by the altar, if he begins casting or other sinister things. Staying above the water, near the ceiling, but would like to be in PBS range. Hawk has his ioun torch going.

Readied Attack, PBS, DA: 1d20 + 15 + 1 - 3 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 15 + 1 - 3 + 2 = 32
Damage: 1d8 + 3 + 1 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 3 + 1 + 6 = 12

Seeing that there is a light source illuminating the area behind and in front of her, Mogla-Tor steps out of the pale light of the pillar to hide amongst the darkness as Hawkwren's ioun torch seems to falter as Darkness coats the area by the pit.

With the Ioun Torch, there was a 10' wide line between the edges of the light levels that is pure darkness even with low-light vision.

Thorgan:
You see the remaining skum warriors brandish their tridents and move around the edge of the basin on the ledges with ease, getting ready to launch their weaponry at you and your benefactor.

Since a Medium character (Darius) is carrying another Medium character (Thorgan) and the average weight of the dwarf plus his gear is 265+ lbs., is it fair to say that you are both taking the grappling penalties?

@Darius: How do you have Evasion, Uncanny Dodge and Improved Uncanny Dodge? I don't see how a Kensai Magus would get these abilities. By my estimate, you have a 23 FFAC which would be 21 FFAC with the grappling penalties, right?

@Darius: Looking over it, it seems you used the Flamboyant Arcana to take Arcane Deed feat to take Precise Strike and Evasive swashbuckler deeds, but Arcane Deed states that Deeds with the language requiring one panache point in the pool don't work, which includes both of those. This is highlighted in orange, so it likely came from the new errata. Likely because a magus doesn't need more damage from two arcanas! :D (Flamboyant into Precise Strike) So.... what do we do here?

The GM is referring to the official errata for thr ACG. He is correct in that neither Precise Strike nor Evasive wrok for the magus anymore for a magus with arcane deed. You get to change them out for free.

As for taking grappling penalties for carrying someone, I have never heard of any such thing. It would possibly give load penalties, depending on the carrying capacity of the carrier, but I'm not seeing anything about further penalties. The carrying situation should be over shortly enough, so it's probably an academic discussion anyways.

Avelina climbs down the rope, the magic of her scroll allowing her to descend with a grace befitting her (or at least her image of herself).

Double move down

@Darius: Do you think there would be no penalties for carrying a 265 lbs. dwarf? Honestly asking as it seems silly to me that you wouldn't have any penalties.

Also, I was referencing d20pfsrd's verbiage on the abilities which is based off of the errata document for the ACG that says "Page 104—In the Arcane Deed magus arcana, after the second sentence, add the following sentence: “Even if he gains a panache pool through another means, the magus is not considered to have at least 1 point in his panache pool for the purpose of deeds selected with arcane deed, and his effective swashbuckler level for determining such a deed’s effect is 0.” In the Flamboyant Arcana magus arcana, replace the second sentence with “The magus can spend only points from his arcane pool (not panache points) to use these deeds and any other deeds he gains from the deed arcana. He can’t use points from his arcane pool to use deeds from other classes or those gained by feats, nor can he regain points to his arcane pool as a swashbuckler would regain panache points.”

I guess ill switch em up after or whatever you want.. That must have just happened.. As far as carrying penalties it doesn't matter what i think.. PFS is not the realm of RAI, its RAW and there is no sentence that says you take penalties for carrying as ally.. As far as carry load goes he wouldn't take any negatives until heavy encumbrance and that's 700lbs.. He's nowhere close to that.

@Avelina: Ah, load penalties! That's what I was forgetting. Grappling and holding on to someone just seemed close enough.

@Darius: The whole RAI v. RAW thing is nice until you realize that there is no sentence that gives penalties to death. It just says that the soul leaves the body. Rules as written, a dead person can just up and do whatever he wants as there is no listed penalty. On that note, as far as I know, the rules never state that you can carry an ally either or drag them to safety or anything, but there are convenient rules like the Grapple, Reposition and Drag maneuvers, which what I usually default to in cases where characters do things like this and I don't know what to do, but conveniently there are carrying capacity rules for this that I forgot about. Also, I think your heavy load is at 467. 700 would be you not being able to carry him, but luckily Thorgan isn't that fat. Looks like a 265 lb. dwarf plus your standard gear puts you in Medium encumbrance, which gives Max Dex of 3, which means you are still fine, so it appears the attacks would have missed.

As to the Elusive and Precise Strike deeds, since we started the game pre-errata. Let's finish the game pre-errata and you can change out Darius' abilities after this scenario. Makes the most sense, I think.

It looks like Darius provoked from Red and/or Purple, right? Can you confirm which or both?

Monty opts for a rather showy entrance sliding as fast as he can towards the bottom of the rope and merely letting go at the end. He tries kicking off to aim for the water.

not sure what die rolls you'd like here

Essentially he is aiming for water to facilitate a softer landing, and also to provide some cover. Monty's actions are to slide down the rope as fast as possible, drop into the water, then stay submerged and swim for the stairs. Not sure how this plays out in the action economy - is free falling 120-200' a move action or...? So leaving this in the GM hands to rule on - I'm cool how it plays out, just let me know when Monty is back on deck in due course :) With Boots of the Cat he takes minimum damage from the fall and lands on his feet - so somewhere between 12 and 20 damage, as adjusted (or not) for hitting water.

Let's say a Climb check to hold on to the rope as you slide down to keep your grip. Since you are basically trying for a controlled free fall, you are likely to bang against the rocks as you fall. Maybe a Fortitude or Reflex save (Fort is you absorb the blows; Reflex is dodge; One or the other). Then once you hit the bottom of the rope, you plummet the 120'. There isn't enough water to avoid damage from the fall, so you will take full damage (12) for the 120'. If you fail the Fort/Reflex save at the normal Climb check DC of 20, then you will take half of the remainder (4) for a total of 16 damage. Failed Climb check at say... DC 30? (you are halfway trying to catch yourself while falling) and you take the full 20 damage. Sound good?

Once you are at the bottom, you have another move action since the jumping off and falling will take a move action, so a Swim check will be necessary at DC 10 to move a quarter of your speed.

@Thorgan: I would think being carried would still be grappled in a sense, but it seems there is some push back on that. Do what you feel is best. I just want to give you guys a good time. Flat-footed seemed appropriate as you aren't able to dodge or move unless Darius does, which is the definition of flat-footed (immobile or paralyzed), right? Again, if you disagree, I'm just trying to make a good scenario of it! If you don't like it, feel free to say "This isn't RAW" and ignore the damage as I have no backing to support this, but it seems logical to me.

Oh, I think being CARRIED should probably count as grappled penalty or something, as it seems like there should be some extra difficulty there. I just don't think it's necessary for the carrier, as they already have their load penalties. It's within your purview to give circumstance modifiers to things in PFS, so just say it's a circumstance penalty to AC and attack rolls, using the grapple rules as a basis :D

Yeah, I'm not trying to be ornery. It just seems like carrying someone (something I REALLY don't see ever) should have more penalties than nothing (which is what it has had effectively). I guess Carrying Capacity rules for carrier and grappling rules plus FFAC for being carried makes sense to me. (Trust me, I think this will be an easy fight for even just Thorgan and Darius.) Again, if you have problems with this, just let me know. I just want people to have a good time.

Wow, that was a lot of posts. Regarding to penalties, they make sense, and hopefully it will be only a round. Regarding to going back at once, it makes sense, expecially taking account I can only move 20 ft per round, so if I wait to go down it will take me all the combat to do that

Black Circle is the Darkness spell cast by the Cleric; Yellows are Dim Light from the moss and Low-Light beyond the Dim Light.

Hawkwren and Amontillado are more than 30' from you on a 3D scaled. Amontillado on a flat plane would be 25' and Hawkwren is 45' and both are 25' below you.

Darius kills the skum as he attacks with three vicious sword slashes and two gargoyle natural attacks.

Avelina finally hits the bottom of the first section and finds herself in the slanted tunnel.

Just a reminder that Thorgan's AC should be 27 not 21 as he has his judgement up (+3 sacred) and shield of faith (+3 deflection, no other deflection bonuses up). I try always to keep the round-to-round stats up to date in the status spoiler at the bottom of every post. I'll let you sort out the damage he took that round, as I don't want to make any incorrect assumptions of claw vs bite.

Looks like Thorgan took 18 less damage from the claws.

Amontillado's swing connects, but the damage is severely weakened by the ebb and flow of the water as his second swing misses the aquatic creature.

Thorgan seems to be having similar luck as his swing misses.

Artian continues his journey down the shaft slowly as Hawkwren keeps hold of his bow and tries to swim for the safety of the stairs.

He would still need to make a Swim check as he is 5' from being out of the water, so he would draw two AoOs to move and would only get one shot.
