Getting a better look at it, Rauno identifies the creatures as an Abyssal Ghoul. In addition to spreading a disease that saps your heath, if the creature was able to pin a target like it almost did to Kelkzar, it can drain your mental facilities as well Wisdom
It shouldn't have been able to live in the portal like that. How it came to be able to live inside the portal is unknown. The tomb was built by the Wind Dukes, so maybe they had some knowledge or magic on how to make a creature live in the in between spaces.
According to the tracks you were following, a single human passed this way through the portal in a hurry. According to the dragon, Allustan fled into the Whispering Cairn and alluded him.

Rauno lifts a hand toward the portal, sensing its arcane potential and trying to suss out where it pulls toward, whether on this plane or another. He'll try to discern any other mechanics about it as well, especially if it is two way or not.

Once he has the area properly studied, he'll cast telepathic bond on himself, Trevor, Kelkzar and Rowena. "If there is an ambush or guardian on the other side, you can warn us telepathically. The message should still reach us. Remember, don't merely warn us of attack, try to tell us what is attacking so we can be as ready as possible."
With that, he'll give them a nod, letting them know we are ready to proceed.

Trevor, Kelkzar and Rowena walk through the portal and appear somewhere different. The air feels different here as is the architecture. This sharply sloped hallway is filled with rushing, screaming wind and smoke. Small hollow projections in the hallway seem to be making the noise, but it’s obvious that air inside is being pushed out at an unusual rate. The noise makes hearing and speaking difficult.
The three through the portal needs to make a Fort save DC 17 or take Damage: 3d4 ⇒ (2, 2, 4) = 8 after inhaling some of the smoke and feeling like it is clawing your insides.
