Instrument |
I have pretty nothing that will help here. Not my forte.
Instrument sets himself up on the opposite street corner, finds a soapbox, and begins preaching the word of Aroden to passersby. Not exactly Bluff, but I'll roll it if it's necessary: Bluff: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (7) - 1 = 6.
GM Mike Hallet |
You can certainly find a place to buy some scrolls if so inclined. It will just take a little bit of time and money, but it's a big enough city.
Blodgett Lomax |
I don't mind spending the coin. However, the spells aren't on Blodgett's spell list. Don't believe they're on the Instrument's list either.
Invisibility and silence are on Ordvåben's list, if we want to go that route. Otherwise, we can just take our chances.
Instrument |
A scroll each of silence and invisibility would be 300gp, or 60gp apiece. I'm good with that. Darvik can just do his Strength thing without issue until the door is busted.
Instrument harumphs and hops down off his box, following the others in the direction of a magic shop.
Ordvåben |
silence has a 20' radius. One should be plenty.im okay with this. Will post in character tonight once I get back to NH

Blodgett Lomax |
Blodgett will procure the scrolls, then hand them to Ordvåben as the party returns to the warehouse. He helpfully suggests to the Instrument that he try proselyting again. You might get a different mix of persons this time, more susceptible to the story of your dead god.
GM Mike Hallet |
One thing to consider is the duration of silence. A scroll will last 3 rounds, so I will definitely need Strength checks.
Darvik Willowbrook |
If this is the path we decided to take,
Strength: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10
Strength: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
Strength: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
Defiantly average, but if a crowbar can be used I do have one so +2 can go to those rolls.
GM Mike Hallet |
It takes a few tries, but Darvik is able to open the door while still silent and invisible.
You spot a creature on the platform above, he appears to be supervising something as he watches a corner of the warehouse. He has the same finned head that you saw peeking in the window of Yuka's shop. A stripe of pink runs down the back of his otherwise blue skin.
Since you had a round left on the silence, and the creature on top would not have been looking at that door, I will give you all a surprise round. His gaze was focused in the direction of the arrow.
Instrument |
Knowledge (Planes?): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (11) + 9 = 20
Eager to make good use of the well-spent gold, the Instrument summons some gilding of his own so that the party can further press their advantage.
Glitterdust, DC 18 Will negates.
Ordvåben |
And the Skald will begin his SONG OF RAGE
GM Mike Hallet |
Just remember that you are in an area of silence. (I'm assuming it is centered on the now open door, orange cirlce.) Until Ordvaben is outside the 20 foot radius or when the spell ends at the start of Ordvaben's turn during the first full round, you cannot benefit from song of rage as it requires being able to hear the skald.
Identifying these creatures required a DC 12 Knowledge (nature) check they are not outsiders.
Will: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17
The creature on the top level is blinded by the glowing particles.
Darvik Willowbrook |
Darvik will double move toward the enemy! I can't target my pog without destroying the circles on the map.
GM Mike Hallet |
I fixed the map and moved you. It's a surprise round, so only a single move.
Instrument knows that the creature he sees is an aquatic monstrous humanoid known as a sahuagin. Sometimes called the "orcs of the sea" due to their large numbers and bloodthirsty natures, they are known to have a special rapport with sharks.
Instrument gets 1 additional piece of information.
GM Mike Hallet |
Siival will cast barkskin on Darvik.
"This will strengthen your defenses!"
Sival is currently in an area of silence.
Instrument |
The Instrument wracks his mind for what wisdom Aroden may have granted him this day...
Any ability or trait best known about sahuagin. In absence of anything particular, special attacks please.
GM Mike Hallet |
So I guess I need a redo on Instrument's turn as well unless he's able to cast a silent glitterdust as a standard action.
Instrument knows their rapport with sharks goes beyond a skill with animals. Sahuagin can communicate telepathically with them. He also knows when they are wounded, they can enter a blood frenzy which is much like a barbarian's rage.
GM Mike Hallet |
Instrument knows that the rapport that sahuagin have with sharks goes beyond simple skill with animals. They can communicate telepathically with them. He also knows that they enter a frenzy when wounded, like a barbarian's rage.
Since Ordvåben is first, the silence spell ends at the beginning of his turn, meaning you can all choose to accept his song of rage on your turn.

Darkvik comes face-to-face with another sahuagin. He hears at least one more in the corner of the warehouse he is approaching, behind a stack of boxes.
You could have noticed in a square or two before you got to your final location, so feel free to move back a step or two if you want to stop short.
Ordvåben |
The skald song erupts from the silence as he enters the warehouse. Once in about ten yards he weaves a spell and vanishes.
Darvik Willowbrook |
I'll move back one square since technically I wouldn't have wanted to provoke an AoO during my double move.
GM Mike Hallet |
The sahuagin up top shouts a warning and then moves toward the entrance.
Seeing Blodgett, he levels his heavy crossbow at him and fires a bolt.
Attack: 1d20 + 7 + 2 - 4 ⇒ (13) + 7 + 2 - 4 = 18
Damage: 1d10 + 1 + 2 + 2d6 ⇒ (9) + 1 + 2 + (5, 6) = 23
Despite the cover of the crates, the bolt just manages to strike him hard, biting into his flesh with an unusual amount of impact. Another shot like that might prove lethal.
Another sahuagin comes around the corner, seeing Darvik, this one flies into a rage without being injured and tries to harpoon the fighter.
Attack: 1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 8 + 2 = 27
Damage: 1d8 + 6 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 6 + 3 = 14
Despite the expert defenses of the trained warrior, the brute manages to land a lucky blow.

Ooof. Is that sneak damage somehow? That bites.
Instrument quickly fires off a burst of golden particles to hinder the archer's aim, then reverses course and follows the skald towards the melee. He motions to the wounded Blodgett to follow and take cover behind the crates. "Won't last forever!"
DC 18 Will negates the blindness.
GM Mike Hallet |
Nope, human bane crossbow bolt. Somehow they must have been tipped off that the people snooping around were mostly human and prepared accordingly. :)
I'll use the failed save from the retconned surprise round action, the archer is now blind.
Blodgett Lomax |
As a free action, Blodgett coughs up blood. A lot of it.
As a standard, Blodgett lets fly a pair of force bolts at the caster.
magic missile: 2d4 + 2 ⇒ (1, 1) + 2 = 4
As a move, he puts several crates between the bedazzled archer and himself.
GM Mike Hallet |
The remaining sahuagin moves to the stairs while getting his crossbow ready.

Double move.
Darvik Willowbrook |
Darvik embraces both the sounds of rage and the warmth of healing. He then attacks his new opponent! So it looks like I'll gain +1 to hit and damage but -1 to AC, correct?
Scimitar: 1d20 + 8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 8 + 1 = 17 for Damage: 1d6 + 12 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 12 + 1 = 16
Shield: 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 6 + 1 = 15 for Damage: 1d3 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 4 + 1 = 8
Do to Defensive Flurry my AC holds at 25. I'll take a 5' step to the north of the creature if that is not considered a hard corner, otherwise I'll just naturally stay put.
GM Mike Hallet |
Darvik slices into the brute and bashes him with a shield, but still, it stands. Its rage amplified by the smell of its own blood.
The blind sahuagin feels his way around the desk and takes cover.
Will: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
He remains blind.
The brute tries to stab and bite Darvik.
Harpoon: 1d20 + 8 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 8 + 2 + 1 = 12
Bite: 1d20 + 2 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 2 + 2 + 1 = 12
But it only manages to swing wildly at the air.

Instrument weaves his way through the warehouse with the grace of a stork. Arriving at a defensible position, he points violently at the blood-enraged sahuagin nearest and shouts the Will, "Aroden commands you to OBEY!"
The threads of magic reach the fish's ear, and it begins to doubt. -2 to attack roles for #3, for 8 rounds. DC 17 Will reduces this to 1 round.
GM Mike Hallet |
Will: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25
Instrument's commands lead only a brief moment of doubt.
Blodgett moves and retrieves a wand.

Lets try this again! I forgot about Twin Blades, adding +1 to hit and damage on a full attack.
Scimitar: 1d20 + 8 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 8 + 1 + 1 = 19 for Damage: 1d6 + 12 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 12 + 1 + 1 = 19
