To my players, I give thee...
Your first NPC. Say hello to the town sheriff!
Okay, okay, I kid. I need to close my eyes a while and hopefully I won't be so silly when I wake.

Gaaaahhhh a fell beast! Kill it! Kill it with FIRE!

*laughs*
But I loved seeing him slide into staring in Sci-Fi originals.
My Medieval literature professor at university slid into a three minute long diatribe about how much he loathed James Van Der Beek in the middle of a lecture. Aaaah, good old university days.
Anyway, I have a good start on the introduction. It's going to be a bit lengthy, and I'm sort of mashing up stuff you've probably already read in the player's guide and some new information as well, but since the majority of your characters are not from Ustalav, I thought it appropriate to highlight certain things as they will come into play pretty quickly.
Buut, I should show my KM game some love today as well.

GM Aria |

I wrote this on my other game's OOC but a momentary hardware failure on my primary gaming laptop has reminded me that man is ultimately limited by his reliance on technology working as it should. Unfortunately all of my gaming materials, including my notes and copies of the AP are on that hard drive, and I have not backed up that information anywhere. I will be remedying my oversight shortly with a trip to the store to pick up a flash stick for my games. Giving the poor machine a rest until tomorrow morning, but as our party rogue has yet to post a sheet, I do not feel comfortable starting the adventure.
I am tossing around the idea of giving you each an opportunity to know more about the setting with Knowledge (local) checks prior to starting the campaign. Would you welcome this, or prefer to learn about it in the game itself?
None of the information would be spoilerific, I just believe it could help some of you get into the world a little more, or help each other explore it.

I think it might make sense, depending on where we start to help establish who might know what of the area. At least one person in the party is actually from Ustalav I believe and I am unsure if Fighty McPolearms and brother are local or not. (I LOVE that name, it would be way too distracting to play with someone using that name but I think it is hilarious.)
Levelle will be relatively "fresh off the boat" but she might have heard some things on the way to Ravengro...

GM Aria |

All right, I'll come up with information I deem appropriate for DC 10, 15, and 20.
Just as a reminder, even those without a rank can make an untrained knowledge check of 10 with a die roll if they're lucky, so do not feel discouraged.
And if you roll better than 20, I will adjudicate that on a case by case basis.

GM Aria |

All right, folks. To start this sucker off right, I will give you a chance to roll some dice and know something instead of just promising you that I'm working on things.
Ravengro is a healthy farming community blessed with fertile fields and orchards.
Ravengro’s citizens are the town’s greatest hindrances to expansion. Insular, they take some time to warm to strangers and often damage new opportunities for trade with their standoffish attitudes.
Ravengro is a democratic city ruled by a council. Its members are Councilman Vashian Heathmount, Councilman Gharen Muricar, Councilwoman Mirta Straelock, Councilwoman Shanda Farvan.
Ravengro's Sheriff is named Benjen Caellar. The head of the temple of Pharasma is Father Grimburrow.
Obviously, you can look above, but you also know that...
Ravengro's chief products and exports are wheat, barley and corn. Close to the shore of Lake Lias, Ravengrians can supplement their food stores with fish, but not sustainable as a commercial enterprise.
Rumor mongering and gossiping are traditional pastimes of the townsfolk, especially when it comes to strangers.
Councilman Gharen Muricar, who is advanced in age, is a notorious lecher, but his pursuits are mostly considered harmless. Councilman Muricar is also the single greatest authority on matters outside of Ravengro, and the town's unofficial historian.
The owners of The Silk Purse a local money lending operation, Luramin Taigh and Quess Yearburn, employ a team of 8 mercenaries to protect their interests that live in a barracks on site. At any given time, the Silk Purse has a few thousand gold pieces worth of gold on hand for loans and a few thousand more worth of collateral in its storeroom. The Silk Purse also sells back collateral when farmers cannot meet the terms of their loans, mostly in the forms of jewelry.

Wow, this may be just because it's getting rather late and I haven't slept well, but I'm toying around with the idea of calling the IC thread "GM Aria & the Mystery Machine Investigate The Haunting of Harrowstone"
Then again, when my RL gaming group talked about playing this game, I suggested we base it off Scooby Doo, so it makes sense. :P

GM Aria |

Rejoice, my friends, for I have completed your introductory post.
Now don't all swarm your hostess at once! :)

GM Aria |

Apologies in advance for all the links. I'm a very visual world and character builder. From now on, pictures will be used sparingly, but you can assume since these folk have been identified will recur.
As you meet new NPCs I'll be adding them to my profile, and you can look them up there if you wish, or happen to forget. I know that in my other games, I tend to forget introductions and characters if they haven't been featured in a week.
Edit Since we've characters that have yet to be submitted fully, feel free to narrate how you learned of Professor Lorrimor's death, if you wish, or your travel to Ravengro. I'll be checking in, of course, and will respond when it is necessary.

Levelle Mahe |

Untrained!: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23
Wow I really wish I was trained : o

jlord |

Hahaha, yeah, I just rolled a 4 for knowledge (religion) in my Jade Regent game. I wondered if I knew that there were gods. *laughs*
Dice rollers... *shakes head* would that I could trust you all not to lie about physical dice, I would totally never use em.
Believe it or not, but I roll better on dice rollers then with real dice... This is why I prefer magic users. the less rolling the better.

Davor Sandman |

Sorry, guess it was a bit vague. Basically, just trying to get an idea of the attendants of the funeral. If Sandman can see holy symbols, markings of nobility and stuff like that, and what does he know of them kind of stuff.
Basically, he's not really doing much, but I wanted to put a post up. He's just watching other attendees at the moment. Not really expecting anything profound, but if any of the Npc's or Pc's have obvious markings of religion, it would be good to know which gods they favor.

GM Aria |

Yeah, I am serving you with the NPCs your kn. local 10 (is the highest you can get untrained) will give you.
I've received a message that Fighty McPoleArms and Stabby McSneakPants should be checking in tonight, sooo... Apparently my latest and most conservative estimate for progress will come true and we'll see some progress tomorrow.

GM Aria |

Well, not being human would be knowledge Local, actually, since that covers humanoids, according to the SRD. As for guns and what not, i assume that anything people have equipped is easily seen, unless they say otherwise. Knowing what a gun is... kn. engineering? Or just asking? This sorta micromanagement isn't really my thang.

![]() |

And one more ;)
Well my intent certainly wasn't to foist micromanagement on you (or myself) but I suppose this is an excellent time to discuss knowledge checks in general and how you think it would be best handled for a character like Levelle. Since I assume she will see Uriah's gun soon and note that Arkadai has a weird aversion to light the question I was trying to address is how do I navigate something like playing a genius?
I am in another game where the bard has been "making it rain" with the knowledge checks and it gummed up the narrative a bit and the GM actually had to ask him to ratchet it back. I certainly have no interest in doing that to our game but as Levelle makes her way to cultivating a supernatural level of "know it allness" I would like to address sooner rather than later how I navigate establishing what she has and has not figured out.
I have no problem rolling and interpreting based of those rolls myself. I also am more than fine to just roleplay it as I feel best outside of plot specific knowledge needs, I was just looking for some rules of the road. Forewarned and forearmed and four of hearts and all that.

GM Aria |

I appreciate you asking. If you would like, go ahead and make the rolls here in the OOC so as not to clutter up the board. That's pretty much all I ask. I like to keep the board clean so that people who don't have a lot of time to sit and read through everything don't have a difficult time of doing so.
Concerning Knowledge Checks:
I will be calling for them when they are applicable. If there is one called for in the book, I will likely post the result with the text in a spoiler, and hopefully you guys will roll with your reactions. I will hold you all to the honor system of not looking, or if you do, not using meta knowledge. It simply will make things easier than me having to call for it, and waiting on the people who have the appropriate skill to chime in before we can all move on as a group.
Some things you just pick up from experience.
