GM Aarvid - PFS Society Scenario #6–19: Test of Tar Kuata (PFRPG) PDF

Rebels Map

You arrive to meet with Venture-Captain Norden Balentiir
in the Osirian city of An.

Venture-Captain Norden Balentiir inclines his head in welcome
as he opens the door and welcomes everyone into a modest
office.

“I’m glad you are on time—and with little to spare,” he
says as checks outside and then closes the door.

“Your ship leaves soon, and I’ve taken care of the details.”
He places a neat stack of travel papers on the small desk and sits down.

“I’m pleased that you volunteered to visit the remote
monastery of Tar Kuata on the Society’s behalf. As you may
already know, the Society seeks pieces of the Sky Key, a strange
relic broken into multiple pieces by dwarves long ago. It seems
one of the descendants may have found her way to Tar Kuata,
and we believe the Ouat monks that also reside there still have
a piece of the key. Travel there, meet with them, confirm our
intelligence, and barter for the relic as needed. Do aim to be
respectful; few Pathfinders have traveled to Tar Kuata, so you’ll
need to earn the monks’ goodwill—and perhaps even pave the
way for future collaboration.

“To that end, I am sending you with this.” Balentiir lifts a
heavy bag and adds it to the desk.

“You may be familiar with
bags able to hold more than seems possible, and this one is
filled with grain. I understand Tar Kuata has had a poor harvest
this year, and this should help you get off on the right foot in
negotiations. Any questions?”

He pauses and looks at each of you with a discerning eye.

Feel free to ask questions or introduce yourself if new to group

Eadie enters the room wearing a long azure robe – slit vertically from the middle of her waist down, over cream trousers. The warrior’s hair is covered by a silk hijab that matches her tailored robe. A trail of foolscap papyrus follows in her wake, having fallen from a number of manilla folders Eadie carries casually under her right arm.

“Hi Lore. Hi guys.” Eadie has a rapid, friendly wave for the newcomers and a hug and kiss for her big sis. She then dumps her own pile of paper on Norden Balentiir’s desk.

“I’ve been writing up correspondence between the Diamond and Sapphire Sages. But they both keep correcting my spelling. Apparently, I use waaaay too many ‘u’s in words like favourite and colour. She *shrugs* “Whatevah. It’s just the Chelish way.”

Eadie listens carefully and respectfully to the Osirian Venture-Captain’s briefing. The pronunciation of ‘Ouat’ has her confused.

“What Monks are they, VC Balentiir? Also …” Eadie asks innocently. “Have you measured the amount of grain you’re giving us and … could it be made into a distilled beverage?”

A dark man wearing black robes that keep his face mostly in shadow enters the room. He uses a scythe taller than himself as a walking stick and you note the expensive rings adorning his finders. "Greetings. I am Khamul, a former Blood Lord of Geb-a refugee, you might say. I regret to inform you all that I am a practicer of the necromantic arts; nay, I like it as little as I am sure you do but when you are raised in Geb these are the skills you learn. I have chosen to leave that country and take up a post in the Society to at least put these foul arts to good use though and I hope you do not take offense."

At the mention of the Jeweled Sages, Khamul speaks up, "I likewise work for Amenopheus and Tahonikepsu. It is good to have a fellow Sage along, especially as we travel through Osirion."

"Hi everyone! I see we have some new folks along with us this time, Eadie." She hops up on a chair and gives Eadie a big hug. "Good to see you again, sis. It seems we have another mission together! I'm so jazzed! And it's a diplomatic mission this time, well... again, should I say?... Somehow they always seem to come down to some kind of fight though, even the diplomatic ones. But hopefully not a fight with the monks! I wonder what kind of monks they are, the religious kind or the fighting kind?" SHe turns to the VC and asks him."What kind of monks are they, sir? The religious kind or the fighting kind? Not that it matters much, as we're on a diplomatic mission, yes? But it's good to know, anyway."

When Khamul speaks up, she looks him up and down a couple of times with a little scowl... then shrugs as she turns to face him, her golden armor emblazoned with the symbol of Sarenrae clearly visible to him. "Hi! I'm Lorelendral, but you can call me Lore. It's nice to meet you, I'm sure. Just so you know, I think I can live with a little necromantic arts, but just be aware I can't condone making undead.. and I'll put them down as fast as you can make them... and I'm sure you'd have to admit having your healer too busy killing your undead to heal or throw a fireball or two at the REAL enemy would be a bad thing. Capische?" She flashes him a smile.

The venture captain turns to face Eadie before responding to her question.

"Who are the Ouat monks you ask? They are a contemplative order of dwarven monks who renounced their racial identity to focus on self-perfection. Technically, they are distinct from the other monks in Tar Kuata, but the two groups work together so closely that it’s hard to tell the difference.."

He continues to share with the entire group, interrupting the discourse on tenets of Sarenrae and 50 shades of necromancy.

"The monks are austere but polite, and I have already contacted them to let them know representatives are on the way. They’ll be very hospitable, yet earning their respect will no doubt involve proof of your worth. Like most who follow the Iroran faith, the monks of Tar Kuata no doubt value knowledge, discipline, and self-perfection ."

"If they value knowledge, then we will have some common ground." An elf says from place near a window. He is dressed in traveling robes local to the region, and carries little in the way of weapons. In his hands he holds a small journal and ink pen, with which he takes notes in a precise shorthand. "As for discipline, if they understand the patience needed for academics then that should serve our position as well. Perfection is a tricky subject. I don't hold the belief that it is possible in this life. At least not in a permanent state. Perhaps they might enlighten us in the theory of such things."

Turning to his new companions, he introduces himself with a bow and common Osirion gesture. "I am Arovandeon Isero. Naturalist, alchemist, and academic."

“Really, Lore?” Eadie looks down at the offending finger, rotates it a little and frowns. Eventually …

D’oh! Of course it is! What he must think of me …

Eadie mouths a silent ‘thank-you’ to the gnomish priestess and tries the same gesture again BUT with the finger on her LEFT hand.

Venture-Captain Norden Balentiir pulls Eadie, Arovandeon and Khamul
aside.

"I have received a missive from Amenopheus
addressed to you. I have included it with your specific travel papers."

Arovandeon recalls a bit of information from his historical and local knowledge.

Arovandeon:

Kn:History
15+ A Sothan priest of Irori named Narmek Tar Kuata
founded the monastery more than 3,000 years ago. It is
among the oldest continuously used schools in Osirion.
20+ Most people in Tar Kuata are humans of Garundi
ancestry, but the monastery also houses the Ouat monks,
an order of dwarves that shave their heads and beards and
eschew dwarven traditions in favor of discovering their
own path to perfection

Kn:Local
15+ Merchants are refusing to travel into the Footprints
of Rovagug. The most recent two caravans to return from
there were both attacked by bandits.
20+ Weeks ago, a priest gave a passionate sermon
praising the church of Sarenrae for dismantling an
illegal cult of Rovagug. Despite this sermon being old
news, many people still talk about it.
30+ The cult referred to itself as the Doomsday
Knights, a force of heavily armored warriors wielding
divine power. Although Sarenrae’s faithful destroyed
much of the cult, some survivors escaped.

Balentiir continues...

"We have made all arrangements to get you
from An to Tar Kuata, first by boat up the River Sphinx
and then by land to the Barrier Wall Mountains. Are there any other questions?"

    It costs an exorbitant amount of Prestige (3/level, IIRC), but converting folks to other factions is actually a Faction Card goal!

    Corb's not done being leveled because I get data at the end of today. Definitely Alchemist 2, though, so I can 4-hand a Greatsword.

    Familiar to some, but definitely with some new additions, Corb now graces the meeting with his presence.

    A meathead with an indeterminable mess of ethnicities in his family tree finally arrives at the briefing room and unceremoniously pushes through the door to the office. He carries a Greatsword on his back and wears a number of vials along his belt, leaving his various kits in his cart (which he pulls himself). To those who have met him before, he now lacks his Hide Armor (with no replacement) and is now sporting a extra arm on each side!

    He seems very pleased as he displays a note, and speaks as if he has no "Inside Voice." "THIS SAID THERE WAS A PHYSICAL CHALLENGE! WHEN DO WE LEAVE?!?"

    This one is FAR from ‘armless.

    “Hey, Corbalias! I’m Eadie. Remember me? We met at the Frothing Alembic when Lore won the ‘balance heaps of drinks on bar furniture and then lift the lot over your head’ contest.”

    “Sorry, I only know Chelish. It’s an improved dialect of Taldane, you know.”

    Before the party attempts the high mountain valley that contains the monastery, Eadie swaps leather for her conventional black full plate, though she leaves her great helm tied to her pack. As they approach Tar Kuata, Eadie ensures her weapons are sheathed, her smile is friendly and her mouth is closed.

    Arovandeon spent a few decades traveling the known world, and has learned from experience the skills of an envoy. He smiles at the interaction between Eadie and Lore, and if Eadie's gesture was incorrect or rude, he shows no sign of being offended. Nor does he comment that such a gesture, in certain cultures, could be either a challenge to fight or an offer of marriage.

    Corbalias fascinates him. One glance at the arms and belt of vials intrigues him, and time on the journey gives him opportunity to ask about the man's background and his knowledge of alchemy. If Corbalias is interested, Arovandeon freely offers to share notes from his personal formula book.

    Regarding Eadie's offer for dictation, he volunteers translation to a half a dozen other languages if wanted, and also offers to teach the basics of any language he knows. "I would highly suggest Ancient Osiriani. It is a fascinating language, and not difficult for those that understand the modern tongue of Osirion."

    ***

    On the journey, Arovandeon spends some time in research, consolidating notes recalled from history books he has read. He doesn't have much on Tar Kuata, but he offers all he can remember. "A Sothan priest of Irori named Narmek Tar Kuata founded the monastery more than 3,000 years ago. It is among the oldest continuously used schools in Osirion. Though all monks at the monastery follow a similar basic philosophy, the Quat monks are all dwarves who eschew dwarven traditions. They can be identified by their shaven heads and beards."

    Of local events, Arovandeon gives a warning. "We should be on our guard near the area known as the Footprints of Rovagug. The most recent two caravans to return from there were both attacked by bandits."

    To Lore, Arovandeon offers recent news that she might find of particular interest. "You venerate Sarenrae, yes? Well, in my research of the local area I came across an interesting story. A few weeks ago, a priest gave a passionate sermon praising the church of Sarenrae for dismantling an illegal cult of Rovagug called the Doomsday Knights. These Knights were a force of heavily armored warriors wielding divine power, and though Sarenrae’s faithful destroyed much of the cult, it is rumored that some survivors escaped."

    Arriving at the monastery he takes a moment to study the place before opening his mouth.

    The map has a person standing before us. Is there someone waiting for us?

    Regarding purchases: I'll spend 2 Prestige on a potion of fly.

    Corb has no issues sharing his "notes," which consist largely of combinations of alcohol that don't make anything cool happen. He explains in very unhappy-sounding detail how his mother taught him the importance of strength and being heard as a child, but "NO MORE THAN THAT!" Coincidentally, this also taught him that yelling is vital to be heard, as the most vocal are amongst the most often heard.

    Many of his other functions fell upon the owner of an island he's be frequently run away to for months at a time later in life. The owner, a fellow acquaintance of his mother in both Pathfinding and Freedom Fighting, also valued might, but was also quite formative on his other skills. "I HEARD THE STORY ABOUT THE KAER MAGA BROTHEL AT LEAST TWICE AN HOUR! NOW, WHEN I NEED TO GET ANGRY, I IMAGINE HIM TELLING THAT STORY FOR A FIFTH TIME IN A SINGLE DAY WHEN I WAS TRYING TO SLEEP!"

    His formula book is quite uninformative, bearing only 5 pages of usable formulas. The journal entry about his "BONUS ARMS" is only filled in about partway and consists of the following:

    • Failing to strangle a minotaur
    • drinking a hideous number of his previously-listed failures and a collection of random ingredients
    • Waking up with some extra limbs (and a depiction of a very bloody room and Corb)
    • Successfully grappling the previous minotaur

    ~~~
    Upon arrival, Corb will enter "Diplomatic Mode", A.K.A. utilizing his Breath Mastery (thanks to his yelling-all-the-time-strengthened lungs) to hold his breath for hours on end.
    Sitting as still as a statue, Jonterra finally moves, slowly. "I llok forward to meeting the monks." He simply says.
    Corb will grab and carry all things undesired to be carried. This is not out of any kindness of his heart, but a desire to bulk up his new, still-quite-beefy bonus arms. He continues to hold his breath, which can last for roughly 16 more hours or until combat begins (whichever happens first).
    Corb delicately ponders the act of carrying everyone's stuff at the same time. "UNABLE TO CART THE EVERYONE ELSE INTO THE MOUNTAINS BECAUSE CLIFFS! BUT MY NEW ARMS MIGHT MELT IF I DON'T KEEP THEM BEEFY!"
    Eadie is happy to add the weight of her pack to Corbalias’ load. Just aiding his fitness regimen, mind. Nothing to do with being lazy. Uh uh.
    She inserts her ear plugs as a precaution before approaching the big bruiser and is quite surprised that Corb is being so quiet.
    She nudges the elven scholar. “WHY IS CORBAL…” *removes ear plugs* “Why is Corbalias turning blue, Aro? Is he just cold or could he be descended from one of those tiny, whiney blue fey with the white caps?”
    Eadie then presents the bag of holding containing the Pathfinders’ grain gift to Lore. She grins like an idiot while constantly bowing to the dwarven abbess.
    It us not my place to discuss business without Itephta, the head of the monastery. Itephta is currently busy, but should be available to meet you later in the afternoon.
    She bows to all, and turns to Lore.
    As you may know, we have a long and distinguished history here. In fact, one of the first dwarves to join the Ouat monks was named Logyra, and she donated a strange metallic device to the Tar Kuata treasury. This device many hold has great significance.
    Oh, come on! ☺
    The young Pathfinder asks, “Lore or Arovandeon, can I borrow some paper and a quill, please?”
    Rather than wander the village, Eadie finds a quiet place to reflect in a garden or by a water source. She field strips her armor and weapons before relaxing for nearly an hour by honing the edges of her cold iron falchion while it rests across her knees.
    Whet on – Whet off – Whet on – Whet off …
    The young warrior takes off her boots, rises to her bare feet and slowly completes her morning calisthenics routine (for a second time that day!) Eadie takes her time performing this routine, focussing on getting each element exactly right. In a break from her normal approach, form and style are emphasized at the expense of speed and power.
    Reinvigorated and clear-headed at the end of the routine, Eadie takes up quill and ink and writes her observations about the journey from An up the river Sphinx and along the overland trail to Tar Kuata. She tries to copy the style of the Pathfinder journals written by one of her heroes, Eando Kline complete with fancy calligraphy and sketches of native flora, fauna and
    the faces of her companions:
    • Arovandeon and Corb huddled together wearing solemn expressions. Each man is studying his respective notebook
    • Lore with her eyes closed; at peace during dawn prayers
    • Jonterra meditating … as still and silent as any mountain
    • Khamûl in motion, reading from his spell book. His mouth slightly open.
    "As the leader of the Ouat, I can confirm the relic’s presence
    within the monastery vaults. We are willing to part with it if Itephta so decides."
    "Do you deem these Pathfinders worthy of such a important relic?"
    She replies humbly.
    They appear to be scholarly and well spoken with knowledge not found in typical brigands. They may prove to be worthy."
    Itephta weighs her feedback and then addresses you directly.
    “You seek something we would give freely, but the relic is
