A Bunch of Little Things

  • All players are free to add to the story - this is a joint tale. Create minor NPC's, invent locations and anything else that adds richness to the story.
  • My general rule is: try to find a way to say 'yes'. If you want to try something outside the normal bounds or RAW, go for it and we will come up with a reasonable rule on the fly. This should be a fun, creative game.
  • I will create a suggested posting guide to try to unify posting styles.
  • I will kick off things in the game thread as soon as I start seeing finalized character sheets. Feel free to begin play immediately after your sheet has been reviewed. I will set the scene and let you have at it.
  • Once everyone is in the main thread, I will bring us round to the first adventure.

One other thing - when you are ready and want me to review your character sheet, please IM me!

Dotting, looking forward to this muchly!

Quick question, GM. Gnomes get Obsessive, a trait granting a small bonus to a single craft or profession skill. Would you have any issue with extending that to a perform skill?

Male Humanly Awesome 'n Totally Rockin' Paladin of Greatness

Thanks for the selection, Lich. I appreciate it.

What's up, Arkwright? Long time no see, bud. :)

As far as characters being done, would it be a problem just to link it here? Or is there a specific reason for wanting it by PM? No biggie as to why, I was just gonna link here in the Discussion thread; but I can send it to you PM if necessary.

Let the adventure begin!

Nope, go for it.

Hmm, no specific reason. I wonder why I did that? Oh well, it's fine to link here if that works for you as well.

So far, I have received sheets from:

Okay. Cool.

Here's Darnak.

It's possible I've missed something because it happens from time to time but he should be completed.

Tengu Male Cleric

I've noticed a few people with their sheets in their alias, formatted like your sheet, Javell. Is there a trick or are you typing that up manually?

Herolabs it is as Arkwright mentioned.

Highly recommend it to any of you who don't have it. It beats the heck out of how I use to do it. Which was manually as you mentioned. Man it took me FOR-EV-OR.

Expect a post in the game thread in a bit!

Posting Guidelines

Please post in third person present tense. Develop a format you are happy with for internal and external dialog. Mark OOC/game rule information clearly in some fashion (spoiler tag, different color or whatver) and post this info outside the actual text block so it doesn't interfere with the others as they read the story.

If there is a standard used here at Paizo, use that one but if not, use the above as a suggestion. Here's an example:

Shilonri slips around the tree ahead and peers into the darker part of the forest she noticed earlier. "There is definately a light up ahead, but it doesn't look like a campfire. It's too...white." she whispers back to the others.

If those dwarves keep up that racket there is no way we are going to get into the camp unnoticed. What have I gotten myself into?

Attempt to hide behind tree Stealth: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17

Male Humanly Awesome 'n Totally Rockin' Paladin of Greatness

Yeah that's pretty much the way I do things.

I am curious about the clothing though. Why does the weight count? Typically the initial set doesn't. Again, nothing more than curiosity.

A few other posting things:

To keep things moving in combat, I will roll initiatives and post them in the thread in the OOC section when I think it is needed. While it works best if we post in initiative order, someone may get skipped if they haven't posted in 24 hrs. I will either assume that character is holding their action, or I may take an appropriate action for the character to keep things moving. If I take action, I will try not to use charged items or other critical resources unless there is an obvious crisis at hand. Should you wish to attack someone or do something that you feel should initiate an initiative and I haven't rolled, go ahead and do it - don't wait, and we will sort out surprise and initiative as best we can. Timing is never perfect in a PbP, so we will just make the best of it.

I use a battle grid in combat and other critical times. These images will be posted via a link to a public site. If we are not in a critical situation, I won't usually post anything unless I feel a picture is worth a thousand words. When we are not in a critical situation, don't worry about strict movements, actions and the like, just post. When things get critical, you can use the OOC section of your post to indicate your actions and action types and precise location.

I live in the US on the east coast (EST, GMT -5) and work at least 5 days a week from about 7am - 6pm. I have obligations after work that usually keep me busy until 10pm or so. Therefore, you can expect that I will post daily at about 10pm-11pm EST each night (0300-0400 GMT). Please note that I play in a tabletop game every Thursday evening local time, so it may be hard for me to post on Thursdays until somewhat later.

It is my intent to post every 24 hrs and to keep the game moving, I would like to see all players post before I post again. I understand RL all too well, so if possible, please post something in the discussion thread if you think you can't make a "real" post, just to keep the cadence up and to keep everyone from getting nervous. Even a "Can't Post!" message in Discussion is good enough - it shows you are still engaged and let's me know to move the action along.

Javell DeLeon wrote:

As far as I know, the only rule around starting clothing is that a character may begin play with one outfit valued at 10 gp or less at no cost. Weight (or lack thereof) isn't mentioned so I have always assumed that it was like any other gear. Tell you what - make a note of your free clothing selection on your sheet and should it ever become an issue (very unlikely, esp for a dwarf) in terms of weight, we can dicuss it then.

I am not trying to be pendantic. I like to know clothing so I can help write good scenes or take advantage of character appearance for NPC interaction. Clothing is a big one - a person wearing peasent's garb may well receive different treatment than one wearing clean scholar's robes, for example. This is the only reason I really care - I am not trying to watch everything you wear/carry to the copper - that is boring to me and tedious for you as it distracts from the story.

Yeah, I'm not really worried about it. But when I get curious about something I typically don't hesitate to ask. And you're right; I checked(curiosity again) and couldn't find anything that mentioned it being weight free. The one place I did see it was Herolabs, which is obviously not the place to confirm anything. Because while it's a fantastic product, there are some things I tend to wonder where they got their information from.

I'm in CST. I believe that's -6. I also work Mon-Fri and can typically post around 7:00 and later. But I warn that on some Mondays when my work day is 12 hours or longer, that there's a possibility I won't post anywhere because I'm just flat out beat. I have a physical job and it's quite tiring after 12 hours or so. Not saying it's set in stone I won't post; just saying if it so happens I don't post on a Monday, you'll know why.

Totally fine, thanks for the heads up!

I have reviewed Longfeather's sheet and suggested a couple things for him to look at. It's all quite minor so I expect we will be moving very soon.

In the interim, I will get the first game post up.

Good luck and have fun!

Wow! I didn't realize that. Didn't realize Caquix, Dolarre, and kakson were so dang new to the boards.

Welcome new folks! Did you all just find these boards or were you all like lurkers for a while or what? If you don't mind me asking, that is. And, "None of your freaking business you nosy chump," is a totally allowable response. That will make it perfectly clear to me you'd rather not speak on the matter. :p

No worries. I've been lurking the boards for years. I was bored a week or so ago and read one of the game threads for kicks. It looked like fun so here I am. I'm between games, have been for a while, and am too busy to find a new regular group. So this is a good fit to hit my gaming jones.

Don't worry, I know what I'm doing. I've been playing since 1980, used to work for Steve Jackson Games, and even published a few things during the d20 explosion.

Glad to be here, and ask anything you like. You'll know I was offended when your car explodes.

LOL!

Same boat here. Our RL gaming died away so this was found to help scratch the proverbial itch.

And that's pretty cool having some of your own work published.

Awesome! I am a big fan of Steve Jackson Games. I was really into them when he published the Pocket Games waaaay back in the day. I played the hell outta Ogre and Noaferatu. I purchased the deluxe Ogre and still play that, plus play Frag and of course Munchkin.

Great to have a game industry veteran in with us!

Should we be including the weight of money?

Longfeather wrote:

Oh gods no!

I want to give Darnak a chance to post something introductory, so I am going to wait before posting in the game thread.

As you have likely noticed, I did not jump immediately into the action as I wanted everyone to get a feel for their characters and establish intitial relationships before we started anything serious. If you find this a tad slow, don't worry, the game will pick up and do what I advertised very shortly. I also want to provide some continuity between adventures - hence the "interlude" mentioned in the first post. If we decide to continue, these periods will be perfect for item crafting, shopping and sandboxing.

Welp, I only had about 3 hours of sleep last night, so rather than trying to post right now, I will post tomorrow as soon as I can. I just want to do my post justice, especially now.

Sorry for the delay.

Male Humanly Awesome 'n Totally Rockin' Paladin of Greatness

I can tell you right now, if I was running on 3 hours sleep, I'd have fallen asleep trying to type those 2 sentences you just typed.

You're a far stronger person than me. I'd be out like a light somewhere. Like wherever I happen to fall over and out. :p

Regarding initiative, what if we used the method outlined in the second post here? This seems to be doable.

What are your thoughts?

Yea that sounds good.

Male Humanly Awesome 'n Totally Rockin' Paladin of Greatness

As far as rolling initiative, I think the DM rolling initiative is a no-brainer. I'm totally in for that.

I actually do block in a couple and go in order for the others. Personally, I prefer going in order of initiative. I feel it just works better. By going in order, everyone can act accordingly.

Say for instance you're the number 3 guy(a fighter for example) and you attack. Well the number 1 guy is a spellcaster and he casts haste and the 2nd guy in the order is a cleric and he casts bull's strength on the fighter.

Well now you have to go an adjust everything accordingly. Which is annoying and shouldn't have to be done. Or, what else could happen is, the DM decides it doesn't take effect until next round(for the fighter anyway). Which is annoying because who knows what kind of difference that would've made.

Or possibly the above players of said casters completely go with a different tactic now that the main tank can really take advantage of it. Or can but it's a bunch of trouble to retcon.

This is just one tiny little example and completely hypothetical of course, but I've never been of the opinion that letting everyone post at once makes things go any faster.

I think it works just fine going in order. That's at least my preference and my opinion.

But I can roll with either way. Like I said, I run with it in a couple other games of mine and it's not a big deal. I'm just not a fan of it.

Ok that was easy. After everyone posts for this "surprise-ish" action and before the goblins react, I will roll initiatives for the group and create a post similiar to the one agreed to.

Good luck and thanks for the help!

Awaiting Longfeather's post and I will update the map and post a 'combat round' setup.

V'Thamuus is located at Z1 or Z2 next to Irra, caster supporting caster.

V'Thamuus watches the barbarian run up the left flank. -Rough we may be, but it is good to be with people who are willing to fight for others so readily.- He turns toward Irra, "Let us stay together if possible, these beasts, though small, could swarm and pick us off easily if we split up too much. I am best at sniping the wounded. This is where I will do the most good. Your horse is very impressive!"

@kakson: My bad. You don't have any info under your alias so obviously I didn't realize you were wearing medium armor. Cool then. I don't see how you do it though. Me personally, I'd hate to sacrifice 20' of speed. But, whatever rocks for you, bud. :)

Out of curiosity, what kind of armor are you wearing?

@Caquix: I looked up Tengus; they actually have a base speed of 30'. Are you encumbered, I would guess?

Yeah it turns out everyone has a move of 20' right now except for V'Thamuus (he left his pack back at camp).

Oh man, natural 1 for initiative. DM Lich, you should have saved that for one of the goblins.

Tengu Male Cleric

I could be wrong but I think my initiative should be 11. Only way I can think of a +4 to my initiative is there is a sheet for Longfeather with Improved Initiative. I thought the sheets I posted were after I removed that feat but its possible that one managed to have it on it and if so, sorry. Feel free to adjust my action to suit the change in order.

Longfeather wrote:

Ah, the numbers in side the brackets [10] are your current HP, not your raw roll. Your character sheet shows the +1 you expected; I rolled a 13 raw.

V'Thamuus wrote:

Yeah, heck of a way to get things started.

Another note: When there are ties in the total initiative, they are resolved in the following order:

1. Total Initiative modifier
2. Dex Bonus
3. Dex Score
3. Randomly thereafter

The 12, 12+, and 12++ represent three characters that had a total initiative roll of 12. The + signs represent the resolution of the tie per the above algorithm. I do not "promote" a tied 12 to a 13 because new foes or friends may enter the fight later and roll a 13. While this may cause its own problems, the use of +'s best reflects the modified rolls as they actually occured. I will add +'s after each tie to represent the final order after the tie-breaking algorithm is applied.
