Varisa decorates the west coast of Avistan like a mosaic of precious stones formed into an exotic medallion. Turquoise rivers flecked with foam rush from the rugged northern highlands through emerald forests, along sweeping steppes and into deep, still lakes that reflect the sapphire sky. The rugged shoreline is cleverly carved, sculpted with jutting peninsulas and deep fjords that hint at cold, misted valleys and broad, sweeping uplands. Vast swathes of this ancient land are unclaimed by any government, a true wilderness where travelers are warned to keep a ready eye out for danger as soon as they leave the safety of whatever walls shelter them from the sprawling wilds outside their gates. It is here, among the ruins of ancient, decadent empires, those brave or foolish enough to live by the sword can go to make their fortunes. Tucked away here and there, hidden amongst the deep silence of narrow valleys or buried under the roots of brooding hills, lie treasures uncounted, their splendor dim, untouched by any light, waiting for some hardy soul to claim them.
Dungeons of Varisia is a mashup between adventures in Dungeon magazine and Pathfinder set in the rugged wilderness of Varisia. The game will consist of at least one module drawn from the DM's collection of Dungeon magazines and, if the party wishes to continue playing, additional adventures will follow. The adventures will be linked together with interludes, giving the party a chance to buy goods, craft items, travel, and indulge in some sandbox play.
The Dungeon issues available for play include issues 114-150 inclusive, spanning the years 2004 – 2007. This time period is arguably the “golden age” of Paizo publishing of the magazine, and includes adventures by many authors that would go on to play a pivotal role in the creation of the Pathfinder game and many of its best-known adventures.
