Crap, not lucky today...

"I am willing to try all possible approaches, but let´s not discard the old-fashioned legwork right away. It often proves surprissingly effective. I still think careful questioning around the docks can be useful to our cause"

"THIS is the final piece to the puzzle, I'm sure of it!" Edwin declares vehemently, shaking the tool as if he would strangle it, if possible.

"It is the bow on top of the neatly wrapped package of this entire convoluted case! If I could only figure out where to put my finger on it to tie it all up. BAH!"

There is something that can control golems; you're just not sure what it is.

"Are there any spells or arcane rituals that require the use of an effigy?" Rholf asks as he walks to the recently molested window, a contemplative look on his face as flames silently dance and gyrate on his head.

(Rholf searches the database of his religious knowledge in an attempt to find similar spells or rituals of a divine/demonic nature)
Knowledge (Religion): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25

Human Wizard 6

"The appropriate spell would be scrying. It is currently beyond my capability, but I might be able to cast it from a scroll. Certainly holding a possession of the subject would assist in making a thaumaturgical connection. It's an option that we should explore if Edwin's nad N'Kai's cogitations come to naught."

Scrying is a 4th level spell. They'd get +10 to the Will save because we don't know them, -4 because we have the knife. Worth a try but by no means guaranteed.

There probably are; legend lore otoh.

Scrying, like Alinya said.

".. ah of course. No wonder you did not recall it instantly, N'Kai. 'Control construct' is a powerful spell, only cast by a dedicated wizard near the peak of their art. I sincerely hope there is some other explanation - such as the Beast being under the sway of its original creator. I would not like to face an enemy capable of casting 'control construct'; not without vastly more experience."

Yeah, so 7th level spell means at least a 13th level wizard. Let's not find them too quickly after all :)

I AM THE LORD OF ALL HELLFIRE!!!!!

mwahahahahaaa!

"Since the golem is sentient, it's entirely possible that he's been blackmailed or otherwise coerced into this action by whomever is ultimately behind the curtain, as it were. However, that's a lot of conjecture at this point." the flame-maned cleric interjects.

Larissa is obviously well out of her element, looking from one thinker to the next.

I AM THE LORD OF ALL HELLFIRE!!!!!

They all look deep in thought....

M Human Cleric / 6

With a slight shake of his head in response to some internal question, Rholf turns from the window...

"Good sir," speaking to Crowl, "is there anything else in the library that appeared to be involved in the mischief?"

Scene of the crime....The thief broke in the back door then passed through the auditorium on his way to the workshop where the Seasage Effigy was located.

The door at the back of the auditorium on the way to the workshop is broken off of its hinges.
The auditorium contains a sunken central area lined with books, tribal fetishes, and curios; there is a small stage and lectern in the center of this area.
The high ceilinged workshop/library is lined with empty shelves. Three windows look out over the lawn. Books and artifacts lay all over the floor in disarray, as well as overturned tables and cabinets.

Scene of the crime description....

"So... Dobitoc entered there, came here to open the window and handed the evil thing to whoever waited outside. Perhaps the effect that caused your nosebleed caused the control over him to fail and led to his tearing this room apart."

"You know, we are in a much better place, information-wise, than when we first spoke to him. Perhaps further questioning would be more fruitful in light of what else we know."

M Human Cleric / 6

"An excellent suggestion, Miss Brightfoot." Rholf says as he gives Crowl a nod accompanied by an expression meant to convey the thought of "Fair enough."

I AM THE LORD OF ALL HELLFIRE!!!!!

Nitey nite!

Edwin turns from his silent contemplation of the window.

"Speaking with Dobitoc is, interesting to say the least. He is not the most communicative of humanoids. Natural or construct. However, in light of this new information,... I surmise that he is only partially uncommunicative by nature. The rest, and his angry outbursts, can be explained by the fact that he was controlled. And probably had no way to discern if we were involved or not. That would certainly make ME angry and uncooperative." Edwin says wryly.

"We can certainly try speaking to Dobitoc again. If we explain to him what we have found, perhaps he will be more forthcoming with information to help in his defense."

"In the meantime,... We still need to see the records. I have an interest in the owner of the ill-fated macabre theater. And where they obtained so many ancient coins. Also,,... wait a bit,..."

Edwin goes back and forth across the workshop, then reenters the lecture auditorium, all the way to the back door. Then retraces his steps.

"WHY is the back door only 'broken into', and the door leading to the workshop ripped clean off of it's hinges?" he muses aloud.
I'm taking the description to mean that the back door was still functional, just opened normally? Either by key or lockpick?

"Certainly not congruent with the actions of a golem, intelligent or otherwise. You sir! Who has keys for entry through this back door? And who has keys for entry into the workshop? When the door was functional, obviously."

You can almost smell the wood burning, and hear the gears turning,..

Is the Pyro with you?? ;D

"I concur with Lad...emm, Alinya, that scrying on the owner of the knife could significantly improve our chances of locating the real thief, provided that we can find the proper scroll.

Also, I agree that asking the golem about the specifics of the assault on the library may turn up valuable info. From what you have said about this creature I can only assume that this so-called "Beast" is not the bloodthirsty monster the locals think it is. I would be glad to see this creature up close at last"

I AM THE LORD OF ALL HELLFIRE!!!!!

"Many people have keys to those doors; obviously the golem did not;" says Crowl.

METAGAME INFO: I...kinda hesitate to start inventing "people with keys," at this point; it has a red herring potential to it.

I AM THE LORD OF ALL HELLFIRE!!!!!

So,....roster of people with keys aside, do you guys want to go interview the Beast again?

I'm in. Also do we have any reasonable chance of finding a scrying scroll as we were discussing earlier??

I AM THE LORD OF ALL HELLFIRE!!!!!

The group trundles back to the jail house wherein the Beast is chained.

The guards all nod. They look sleepy.

The beast's bellowing apparently wakes them up a lot at night.

They let the group into the Beast's cell.

He's immense, hulkish, brutish. N'kai is taken aback.......the beast looks up at the group.

He says, "friends?....come, let me loose now?"

looks at them imploringly with desperate eyes under a massive browridge.

I AM THE LORD OF ALL HELLFIRE!!!!!

back in an hour; son has to do a report and needs computer...

No problem. Just trying to see if it was as easy as 'janitor has keys to the back door, but not the workshop' :)

Edwin steps forward slowly.

"Hello Dobitoc. It is good to see you again. Yes we are trying to set you free. And we have good news. We have found indications at every location that they accuse of something that tell us you are innocent. We know you did not do these crimes Dobitoc."

Edwin sighs, and stops speaking to Dobitoc as he were a child. ALthough he still speaks slowly and distinctly.

"I am not sure how much you understand of what is happening here Dobitoc. We know that you did not do these things. But we lack PROOF. The people are scared. They are scared that these terrible things happened, they are scared of you because you are different. And they want very much to punish someone for these crimes. So they can feel safe. They NEED to punish the person who caused all of these crimes to happen. we need to find the one is behind everything, so we can punish HIM and set you free. To do that we need your help."

"Please, tell us what happened the night you were captured Dobitoc. Why did you enter the library? What caused you to go there? Were you tricked? did some one tell you to go there? Or did they somehow make you go there?" Edwin asks cautiously, hoping to get an answer from the Golem before he grows angry again.

I´m up late here in Spain, watching Sons of Anarchy. I´ll be here for a while ;D

N´Kai is barely able to articulate sotto voce to his companions ... "Wow, I can honestly say than in all my travels I have never seen anything like that..."

"Hi, Dobitoc, I´m N´Kai and I am as committed as your friends here as setting you free, but we need to know a couple of things first. Such as what you remember about the night the guard took you at the library. Did someone ask you to grab something from the library??"

Damn, ninj´d again. Cursed detective :)

I AM THE LORD OF ALL HELLFIRE!!!!!

The beast looks calm, serene.

"Here's all I remember. I was in Dipplemire Swamp. I wasn't doing anything.
Then, I was in a book room. I didn't know how come I was in the book room. I got mad. I.....raged. Then, puny men came. They got the best of me. There were too many puny men, and I was mad, but I didn't want to kill anybody. So they put me in chains."

I had to.....add the part about him not killing anybody; don't see how 20 even or so mainly low-level types could overpower a flesh golem.....unless he was trying not to hurt nobody.....

Larissa steps across the line to show her trust of the golem. "Dobitoc, do you have a wound you don't recall receiving? Possibly on your hand or arm? May I see it?"

Being a lame duck in the Diplomacy department, I´ll try and check if someone is using or used Control Construct on Dobitoc, or any other spell for that matter

"I....I don't know....." he says mopily like a little kid.

He holds his hands up, and you can see the gouge, on the back of his hand. It fits the strip of skin you found on the nail like a jigsaw puzzle waiting for a missing piece.
