Description :
Alinya is young, slight, pretty, and neatly dressed in well-made clothes. Her hair is swept back and tightly controlled and a pair of half-moon reading glasses rest on a chain around her neck alongside a symbol of Pharasma. She is quietly spoken and prefers to ask questions of those around her. She quickly defers to authority figures, except over matters touching her own expertise. Her faith in Pharasma is as certain as only an untested belief can be.
Background :
Born the youngest child of a minor noble family in the south of Ustalav, Alinya's childhood had much of luxury, much of safety, and very little of freedom. She has grown up in the confines of one small estate, her movements bounded by fences and hedges, her friendships bounded by the demands of decorous society. It was in the life of the mind that Alinya found her wings. The family estate has a small private chapel dedicated, as is common in Ustalav, to Pharasma. A succession of priests acted as Alinya's tutors in the rites, mysteries, and beliefs of the religion. Due to her father's absent minded indulgence the priestly tutors were supplemented by rare books and even the very occasional travelling scholar.
Alinya's most treasured possession is a collection of letters from Professor Lorrimor. This correspondence, agreed to by her father as part of a rich education, opened Alinya's eyes to knowledge beyond books, beyond ritual. Knowledge that could only be gained by exploration of the deepest dark, by bringing a lamp into the horror and glory of the unquiet past. Professor Lorrimor became her hero, and his adventures were her window to the waiting world.
And now this latest letter, so unexpected, so terribly shocking. Alinya slips the constraints of her life for the first time. She lies to her parents, feigns a pilgrimage to a Cathedral of Pharasma in Varno; hires a carriage to Ravengro. Her parents expect her back within the month. Alinya expects... something new.
