Just thought of another interesting race to play - Svifneblin. They hate drow, so would have a reason to fight them without necessarily being good.

But hey, I made my choice. Maybe someone else can develop that idea.

--------------

He plays like this:
a little be of scouting/stealth (a cross between a spy and a cavalier), interested in getting stronger to prove that Halfling can be a fearsome adventurer, and survive in this mad world. He is tired of being bullied or having Halfling considered as of joke of a race.

He rides a on his eidolon / or riding dog (eventually bonded mount) in combat with a lance.

For some reason I have it in my head that you wanted a sample post, so I worked one up. Then I read your posts from last night and it seems like it was a bit unnecessary. I figured I would go ahead and post this and let you use it or ignore it, however you want.

The idea behind this sample post would be to post the last moments of Brutus' first life, where his philosophy and world view were formed and where the characteristics that made him ideal to be a "starborn" were lived out. Hopefully it worked.

Sample Post:

Brutus never had experienced a moment where he was so close to death that his life "flashed before his eyes." Until now that is. He had been in battle, he had been wounded, he had faced danger after danger, but this, this was different. As he was forced to his knees and his body contorted into such a way that his neck was on the chopping block, Brutus knew he was going to die. So, while the charges were being read, Brutus Tarsi re-lived, in quick flashes, moments of his life.

He saw himself as a boy, bound as he was now, expect that time, his hands were above him and he was at a whipping post. His master, a strong, cruel man, was punishing him again for his clumsiness. He had broken the misses prized, lamp, vase, urn… something important, but then again, it always seemed to be something important. As the whip came on his back, the searing pain filled his mind.

He blinked. The pain was gone, the scene had shifted, and now he was behind bars in the slave caravan. He heard the noises of battle. He could barely make out shadows flitting in and out of the trees, and quickly, he saw the slavers who had bought him not two days prior begin to drop. The searing pain of the whip on his back was nothing to the thing that filled his entire being when that door was opened, and she removed his chains.

Blink. Sitting in the forest, Brutus knew, these were some of the happiest memories he had. At first he had been stand-offish, so filled with rage and hatred that he just lashed out whenever she came near. But her constant presence, her joy, her laugh, her care, eventually wore down his defenses. As he looked he saw himself as no longer a slave, but as a man who knew what freedom tasted like.

Blink. That fateful day. He had been in a scouting party, ahead of their battalion, and they were supposed to circle around the left flank of … "Who were we fighting again? Obviously, it doesn't matter any more…" He had fought for years, always assuming it was on the side of good, always assuming he was bringing freedom to those being oppressed. Until they stumbled upon the farm. The father was out in the fields, and the rest of the family was in the yard around the house. Unfortunately, they had let their comfort get the best of them, they were sighted, and there was nothing to be done but to take the family prisoner. The searing pain of his youth begin to fill him again, but this time, it was deeper, it was all encompassing, it was shame, he had allowed this to happen.

Blink. The knife was in his hands and he was feverishly cutting away the ropes that bound them. "Quick, get your family, head north 100 feet. You will find our horses. Take them, and ride. Don't go back to town, don't try to warn anyone, but ride. You will be free. I am sorry, this wasn't how it was supposed to go. As the hooves of the horses beat the retreat of the family, Brutus never left the knife of the rope. He sat there, waiting for his crime to be discovered and his punishment to come.

Blink. The crowd was filled with familiar faces. Men he had served with for years and years, campaign after campaign, but there was something very… foreign about these men this day. He cocked his head to the side and looked at the large enlisted man with who carried his axe into battle and said simply. "This wasn't what I was fighting for. And with that, the blade came down and Brutus Tarsi was no more.

I'm thinking NG? Though if that's too far off the typical goblin alignments, I could probably make straight Neutral work.

As much as i know Goblins are raised in cages and bullied until they get mean enough to be a real Goblin. That's what passes on the first book of Runelords AP. If you want take a look at the Thistletop dungeon, entrance section. It might give you some nice ideas, cause i do believe a goblin raised in a different way would not be so CE, and there are always some wiser than others, as they take druid, ranger and even cleric levels.

Hope i helped ^^

Poor goblins. :(

I actually like that idea quite a bit. I suspect mine would have had to be exposed to that in order to truly understand it. But mostly it really does fit in with the idea that, you know, the goblins don't have to be this way.

Liberty's Edge

Yorick, NG is perfectly fine for me. As was tossed out there, goblins aren't inherently evil creatures even if they do have a tendency to cause trouble and get into things. Wanting to prove your race can be something more could be very interesting to play up.

Tenoch

Spoiler:
I think my question more was just how it might effect party dynamic. Pathfinder did a lot to loosen up the paladin code for the 'greater good' and oath of vengeance strips away some of those allowances. Obviously I haven't selected who is going to be in the party yet, but we have quite a few submissions that either fall into the 'will do evil things to accomplish our goals' category, or into the 'I am good but I wish to redeem rather than destroy evil things'. I suspect it wouldn't be a problem, but I wanted to have a better idea of what level of conflict might arise from those things.

As for recognizing other starborn, you each do have the star sign birthmark upon you somewhere and there is a low level sense of connection, but nothing so blatant as the results of a detect spell.

Gav, Svirneblin would be interesting though they are one of those races that would need a lot of adjustment in terms of power.

Something to consider is that while this is the 'drow war', drow aren't necessarily a constant enemy. They are simply among the favored of the dark, a race that exemplifies many of its ideals. In Ashfar a drow is much more likely to be LE rather than NE or CE. They are decadent and cruel, yet organized enough to seek to destroy anything that doesn't fall into their vision of how the world should be. A true embodiment of the enemy. Still, there are many others that fall under the sway of the dark so expect quite a variety of challenges.

Algar

Spoiler:
I would probably have you change your trait, simply because there are items and weapons in the world tied to the starborn and discovering them is part of adventuring.

Halflings in this world defintiely have a tendency to stay tucked away in their homeland, so wanting to prove their ability can be interesting. Can you give me a little more idea of the characters personality and what would his alignment be?

Brutus, I had given a few examples of things in my first post to give me more information about your character and your writing style. The sample posts is an excellent way to do it since it gives a lot of information about you.

Here's mah Samsaran for your inspection.. Plan of going Druid next level, then alternating till she hits Prc at 7th..

All info is under her profile..

Blood Orc -Barbarian -Chaotic Good

Huge guy with blood red hair that sticks up when he rages. He believes that everything worth doing is worth overdoing. Huge amounts of damage.

Is it bad that I am almost more excited to see some of these other characters come to life than mine? I love Yorick's concept, the flesh eater adds the perfect touch of monster for me to get an image of a good goblin who eats his enemies. Tarlane, you already have a tough job trying to choose from these characters, excited to see the final product!

Liberty's Edge

Believe me, I'm with you Brutus. I'm going to have some tough decisions to make pretty soon. There are some really good character concepts out there and being presented. I was actually juggling the idea of trying to create two groups split by the level of scruples they have, since it would be interesting to see just how differently they handle situations, but that might be a bit overwhelming. Trying to consider how much prep I could re-use in that way and I have a feeling things would be different enough I'd get run over by it all. But that means cutting half of the presented options, when they've all been pretty good.

Selene and Alexander, giving both of your characters a quick skim they look good and are being added to the list.

I have a feeling that we've gotten most of the unique submissions we will at this point, so I'm going to start asking questions and trying to narrow things down a bit for myself. I suspect I'll be firing off notes for most of you tomorrow to get more opinions and just flesh out parts of your characters better for me. Plan is still to have an official group chosen at the beginning of the week.

Sounds good, I'm interested in a lot of the characters here too.

If two games were run, that'd be superb since nobody would get left out, but that could add up to a lot of work too, I understand.

My "active hours" are a bit weird so if you send me a PM it can either be a very quick reply or a pretty delayed one.

Grand Lodge

DM i took that trait in order to have Lance martial weapon proficiency

It represent an special skill rather than a specific weapon with a tie to a bonus

When you select this trait, choose one of the following benefits:

proficiency with that specific weapon
a +1 trait bonus on attacks of opportunity with that specific weapon
a +2 trait bonus on one kind of combat maneuver when using that specific weapon

in term of alignment both the summoner and the oracle could be L-N (code of personal ethic) or C-N

He is focused, determined to make it on the Big world, he is courageous. He will use what ever his skill set /spell give him to gain a advantage.
He care about being respected, (or fear for his power if he can't have genuine respect).

Ultimately he feels he can only rely on his own power

(the summoner would be willing to go a bit darker if needed but he would really think about it twice)

-----------
here is a little short fluff i wrote for the oracle.

William has read stories about shiny knights all trough his childhood. Eventually he grew older and joined the ranks of the halfling outrider as a young recruit. He figured that his would be a good stepping stone for becoming a cavalier.
But during a practice patrol, the weather turned horrible. As the company of recruits turned for home in the hailstorm he got struck by lightning. He survived it but his mount no so much. As it felt from under him he was unable to leap from the saddle stunned as he was. And then the worse happened. his mount's entire body crushed his left leg.

The healers where unable to repair all of the extensive damage. And as it took a long time for his leg to recover to a certain extend, the Outriders didn't want him anymore.

His dream crush (like his leg) he almost gave up.

But it seemed that he was given a second chance, a different kinds of chance. The lightning has either bestowed him or awakened some divine power. He had become an oracle of nature.

After many tries, the leadership agree to consider again his application if he was to prove to them that you could see all the wonders of the world and that he could win a major tournament in the lands of the elves (as its known that elves make the best rider's in the world).

His first stop had been the Great fortress of Kalatan. He hadn't planned to stay there for long. Actually i had taken him a few month's to be able to enter its courtyard. The only way he figured was to sign for a year contract. Seeing that he had a way with animal as well as tracking skills the local Sgt (after consulting with his senior officer) allowed him to be an outside help. Once inside he was able to even train with some of the soldier's during long patrols.

Oh thank you! :) I try to do something different with every character I make (with varying degrees of success) but I feel like I really hit on something wonderful with this one.

You could always choose one group, and see how it goes for the first week / two weeks / month and then if you think you'd have time, you could come back for a second. I'm not sure if that would be any easier than running them through the same new things at the same time.

Alexander Badaxe Plans to lead a Warg that will consume the world.

Liberty's Edge

Common! We're gonna be late for the war! ^^

Liberty's Edge

Sorry for the delay guys, my weekend got swept up with a bit of chaos that sort of put me behind. With luck I will be able to start going through everything and the notes I made tonight to start giving some information out to you all. Worst case, the morning I will be able to get out information since work will ironically give me some time to post even when home life is being nuts.

I'll get some information out to you all soon.

GM Tarlane:
Hmm. Well, under the "code of conduct" for a Vengeance Oathbound, it says "Never let lesser evils distract you from your pursuit of just vengeance."

I would say that evil party members are such "lesser evils" unless they interfere with the pursuit of meting out justice to those attempting to enslave/destroy the world. Tenoch would keep an eye on them, since they might switch sides if they think the "bad guys" are going to win, or can offer them more power, but, as long as we pursue the same goals, all is fine.

I have a related question (and maybe it was asked and answered in the spoilers, I didn't look): What's to keep the evil players from switching sides? What attaches them to the current regime/world enough that they'd fight against a powerful foe and continue fighting them over long periods? Is it just the Star influence?

Grand Lodge

In fact i just wanted to have martial proef with the lance weapon. Rereading the trait it appears to me that i would have it but just when using that specific weapon.

Hum, could i ask for a house rule that the trait give me the weapon prof with any lance?

Sooo

Just found this thread, and this is one of those campaigns I've wanted to play for a LONG time.

I know recruitment is close to done, but i'd like make an attempt.

Any chance a list of characters already submitted could be created?

Liberty's Edge

Monkeygod, I was just putting up a list for everyone(and to make sure I didn't want to miss anyone)anyway. You snuck in at the wire, so feel free to try and get in one last submission as quick as you can.

I have a few of you I want to get a little information from so you might be getting PMs.

Aetherni - LG Dwarven Fighter(into Cleric) - Focus on defense and support/healing roles.

Yorick- NG Goblin Inquisitor(sin eater) - Prove the place of goblins in the world while maintaining some of their culture

Drombar- CG Fetchling Bard(archeologist) - Friendly and curious, always seeking to solve mysteries. Good as a face.

Rynjin- LE Tiefling sorc(crossblood) - Honorable and friendly, but with a clear darkside. Trying to discover his purpose.

Tenoch- LG Half-orc Paladin(warrior of holy light) - Tormented by a past and trying to fulfill his destiny shown in the stars, a powerful warrior.

Brutus- LG human monk(zen archer) - Fights for freedom, friendly and good humored

Algar- Halfling(oracle or sumoner) - Mounted scout, tired of halflings being bullied wants to prove his strength

Selene- NG Samsaran Wizard(into druid, arcane hierophant) - Easy going and peaceful, seeks to protect the wilderness

Alexander- CG Blood Orc Barbarian - Overdoes everything, seeks to reclaim a feeling of lost honor

Scarab Sages

I'm really interested in this, but am I too late?

Liberty's Edge

Vyranos, I think you were a little late. With monkeygod's submission(and he's been PMing with me about some possibilities) that is already 10 and I was starting to close things up in my last post.

I've been bouncing messages back and forth with people and getting some ideas up, hopefully I'll hear from monkeygod again soon and we'll be able to have some discussion thread started tomorrow.

Just waiting to hear back from Tarlane about my race.

Off to bed now, and then work tomorrow till 5 EST.

So my char idea is not tAken?

Seth86 wrote:

I believe it will be decided tomorrow Seth

Liberty's Edge

Seth,

I didn't have you on the list because I didn't see a full character idea from you. You discussed the idea of the race you wanted to be, and said that you may play a ranger depending on the race decided on. Since I never saw a full character concept with any sort of samples of how he would play I had thought you had moved on.

My bad. You mentioned asking a few questions, so i thought i needed to wait. If u don't mind, .il do char tonight

OH MAN!!! So mad I missed this one! I have wanted to play this campaign for literally 10 years!

Please let me know if you lose anyone as I would be desperate to get into this. I have actually corresponded with the guy that wrote the campaign a while back. He's in England and seems to occasionally check the net for people running his campaign so you may get an email or message from him wishing you well.

Liberty's Edge

Seth,

I'm really sorry, I hate cutting off someone who has interest in things so early on, but I think I'm already going to be letting myself get pretty buried in this and I don't want to have you put in work on a character and then need to cut someone. At this point I think I'm going to have to stick with submissions being closed.

Imimrtl,

I wish you had managed to chime in earlier, it could have been really cool to have you since you obviously are pretty interested in the campaign. I did a fair bit of posting on the mongoose forums about the game when I ran it for my in person group some years back and ended up chatting with the creator some. He was a pretty good guy. Please make sure to follow along with things, right now things are full up, but there are always chances for openings.

Everyone else,

After a lot of internal debate and discussion among you about your characters and possibilities, I have finally firmly come to the decision that I'm going to be running two different groups. I've split you partly by what would make a complete group and partly by how you seem to have similar play styles.

In no particular order-

Group 1:
Yorick NG Goblin Inquisitor
Aetherni LG Dwarf Fighter/Cleric
Drombar CG Fetchling Bard(Archeaologist)
Brutus LG Human Monk(Zen Archer)
Madgod LG Half-Elf Paladin

Group 2:
Rynjin LN Tiefling Sorc
Selene NG Samsaran Wizard/Druid Arcane Hierophant
Algar LN Oracle
Tenoch LG Paladin(Warrior of the Holy Light)
Alexander CG Orc Barbarian

Right now my plan is to whip up a discussion thread for both groups(to be up soon) that will allow you all to sort of introduce yourself ICly and will allow for a little RP and description while everyone gets their crunch built for the characters. I'll go over all the stats as they are finished, and once everyone is ready I'll push forward with an even to start that group off.

I look forward to playing with you all.

Holy hell, all Good party, three of whom are Lawful? WE'RE GOING TO BE SAINTS.

Seriously though, I'm super excited for this game, and really glad to have gotten in. Looking forward to playing with you guys. :)

Woot!

Thanks bunches Tarlane.

Everyone else, will be nice playin' with ya. =)

Liberty's Edge

Alright guys, discussion threads are up for the two parties. I look forward to seeing you all in there.

Yeah I'm super bummed I went to my moms this weekend to help her out cause she's sick should have stayed so I could get in this game lol. I will definitely be following along both groups. If you need help also I am a decent map maker and DM in my own right. That said I will be silently hoping for someone to drop lol.
