Observing and remembering advice from before. "This is what the Druid described, a dark portal that we must close but it will also alert the dragon. Maybe it is something to return to after dealing with the powerful minions that remain here. I have a dispel magic that with Iomedae's will should suffice to disrupt it.". He finishes with more confidence than he feels at the strange sights before them.
Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5

"So...we'll make this the last matter to attend to before confronting the dragon himself?"

![]() |

OK. The party starts to head to the next area. The "tree" in the window takes a 5-foot-step with obvious bad intent. I'm going to call its movement the surprise round.
Agnes: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
Ethendril: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18
Harlis: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
Hostpur: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22
Wayreth: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10
This six-eyed horror is shaped like a dead tree, but it has claws and tentacles and spidery legs. (And obvious reach.) Knowledge Dungeoneering to know more!
Ethendril: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18
Tree: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15
Wayreth: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10
Agnes: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
Harlis: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
Hotspur and Ethendril are up first! This is round 1. You are in the middle of a 20' x 25' space.

![]() |

Okay, can it reach us from where it is? It's still in the window?
It moved from the window into the room. At this point, it can reach any/all of you.
One would have to 5-foot-shuffle or acrobatics to move away and avoid an Attack of Opportunity. Conversely, melee types like Ethendril can just 5-foot-step in and swing!

![]() |

Ethendril takes a step toward the creature now threatening them, and swings with the power of Iomedae.
+1 Greatsword (adamantine)(power attack, divine favor): 1d20 + 8 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 8 + 1 = 242d6 + 11 + 1 ⇒ (5, 1) + 11 + 1 = 18
Reminder that I have divine favor and shield of faith active.

![]() |

Ouch! I can't do much better than that! Was it an AC or material of the weapon issue? I hope someone else has something they can hit it with...I won't be rolling much better than that.

![]() |

AC higher than 24 is difficult but not insurmountable... DR higher than 18 is just ridiculous. Anyone capable of making that knowledge check?

![]() |

knowledge dungeoneering: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (16) + 9 = 25
Oh! This is a yangethe. One of the countless creatures bred and engineered by eldritch horrors from beyond the stars, yangethes have, over the eons, developed keen intellects and desires of their own. Unless slain by violence, a yangethe is immortal. Ethendril, get it.

![]() |

If it's evil, Ethendril's smite evil might well be our only viable way to damage it...
Agnes, might be a good idea to ask about its DR and how to bypass it. Resistances/Spell resistance may also be a good idea.

Hotspur nods at Agnes. "Controlled retreat."
The gunslinger pulls back and fires both barrels at the creature while retreating...
Barrel 1 attack: 1d20 + 10 - 4 ⇒ (8) + 10 - 4 = 14
Barrel 2 attack: 1d20 + 10 - 4 ⇒ (17) + 10 - 4 = 23
Damage barrel 1: 1d12 ⇒ 3
Damage barrel 2: 1d12 ⇒ 9
I believe my bullet damage type is piercing/bludgeoning.

![]() |

Hotspur begins to retreat, shooting as she goes. Her bullets do a bit of damage. But the aberration is so strange that it's difficult to tell if it is harmed at all!

Will Save Harlis: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (15) + 10 = 25
Will Save Daylight: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
Daylight emerging from the assault with a loud whinny of pending insanity.
Oh, a confused mount isn't good. Waiting to see other results before picking who to cure/prevent.

![]() |

will save: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25
Wayreth reels under the psychic assault but manages to hold on to his senses.
I'm still a little confused as to positioning since we don't have a map, and positioning is kinda important for me since there's 2d6 points of at stake per hit...
Would we be able to get a map up? If not, could I get answers to the following questions?
1. Where am I relative to Ethendril?
2. Am I adjacent to this thing? If not, am I able to 5ft step into full attack range?
3. Am I already in a sneak attack position? If not, will I be able to 5ft step into sneak attack position?
4. If we are retreating, how big/far is the exit from where I am?

![]() |

Will: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21
Ack!
Agnes is prepared to full withdraw if at all possible, but would like to hear from other folks if that is what you want to do?

1) Wherever you want to be.
2) See #1.3) See #1.
4) You are 15' away from the exit.

will save, protection from evil: 1d20 + 10 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 10 + 2 = 16 Ruh roh. Divine grace only gets you so far. I think we're going to have a hard time running from this fight successfully, especially if more fail this save. We may need to try to heal our way through this and whittle it down. Plus, don't we have to come back here, anyway?
will save, protection from evil: 1d20 + 10 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 10 + 2 = 26 Reroll from folio that I sort of own, but don't currently have in my possession. I have a feeling you will allow this. :) If so, yay!
Ethendril nearly wilts under the psychic assault. Just when it appears he will fall to his knees, cold and empty, he rallies.

![]() |

Well then, I guess if Hotspur gets confused I'll fight, and if she maintains her senses we'll see about this whole retreat business?
Or go for broke and fight all the way?

![]() |

Will save: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15
edit:
Not good. I will use my folio reroll (pretty sure I haven't used that yet here).
Reroll Will save: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24

![]() |

@group, are we doing a full retreat here?

![]() |

Since GM Engleaktig has given me the luxury of placing myself where I want, I'll put myself adjacent and flanking with Ethendril.
Aeleth flicks a quick glance to his allies to see if any of them are contemplating a retreat, but seeing Ethendril and Harlis determined to fight, steels himself for combat. Heeding the information provided by Agnes, he adopts the stance of the serpent and shapes the air around his hands into spiraling drills that he attempts to drive into where he thinks are the tree-like creature's vulnerable points.
Using snake style to change my damage-type to piercing, which will penetrate the creature's DR.
attack roll: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (16) + 9 = 25
damage roll: 1d6 + 6 + 4 + 2d6 ⇒ (3) + 6 + 4 + (2, 6) = 21
attack roll: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (17) + 9 = 26
damage roll: 1d6 + 6 + 4 + 2d6 ⇒ (3) + 6 + 4 + (3, 3) = 19

Seeing the madness of the confusion causing Daylights eyes to roll with incomprehension he attempts to aid his steed.
Concentration to defensively case Dispel Magic DC21. Then Caster level versus 11+Tree Caster Level.

Agnes will try an Acid Jet: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17 and if it touches will deal 3d6 + 2 ⇒ (4, 3, 5) + 2 = 14 points of acid damage.
DC 15 Fort or sickened for 1d4 ⇒ 1 rounds.

![]() |

Ethendril seems to be fighting defensively, trying to get a feel for the creature, and swings just to ward the thing off. He does heal some of his wounds.
Attack, plus smite evil, plus lay on hands. Harlis and Wayreth, I have life links up on both of you. Go ahead and heal 5 HP and I'll take it.
+1 Greatsword (adamantine), smite evil, flank: 1d20 + 10 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 10 + 4 + 2 = 172d6 + 7 + 4 ⇒ (3, 1) + 7 + 4 = 15 I swear I have rolled more 1's with this character than any other character I have. It really takes away the mighty paladin vibe...
lay on hands, fey foundling: 2d6 + 4 ⇒ (2, 1) + 4 = 7
My AC with smite evil should be 26.

![]() |

Harlis and Wayreth, I have life links up on both of you. Go ahead and heal 5 HP and I'll take it.
Thanks! =)
I took 10 from the tree-thing's psychic attack, so I'm now only down 5.

Round 2, continued
Taking some liberties to move things along.
Hotspur withdraws, since she cannot 5-foot-step and shoot, anyway.
Acrobatics to avoid AoO: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (9) + 13 = 22 Crap. Sorry, Hotspur. :(
AoO with Tentacle: 1d20 + 13 + 20 ⇒ (2) + 13 + 20 = 35 Unfortunately, this uses the Quickened True Strike.
Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
Grab: 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (15) + 20 = 35
Hotspur, though nimble, isn't quite fast enough to escape the creature. It reaches out with a tentacle dealing 8 HP of damage to the Gunslinger/Bard and grabs her!
____________________________________________________________
The yangethe's turn
Since it used up its True Strike, it will use another Psychic Blast:
Psychic Blast Damage: 6d6 ⇒ (3, 1, 2, 5, 6, 6) = 23
Confusion Duration: 1d6 ⇒ 3
DC 18 Will save for half damage and to negate Confusion effect.
____________________________________________________________
Recap:
Hostpur: Attempt to withdraw, grabbed
Ethendril: swing and miss
Tree: 52 HP damage, AoO, psychic blast
Wayreth: Go!
Agnes: Go!
Harlis: Go!

Wayreth steels himself against the mental assault again, hoping that his willpower is still sufficient despite being unchained...
will save: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19 Phew! Just enough!
So I'm taking another 6 damage and Ethendril is taking another 5...
He manages to retain his senses, and keeps up his attack routine, taking advantage of Ethendril's flank and to drive the whirling winds around his hands into the monster like drills.
Snake style to do piercing damage, sneak attack via flanking, pirahna strike.
attack roll: 1d20 + 9 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 9 + 2 = 28
damage roll: 1d6 + 6 + 4 + 2d6 ⇒ (4) + 6 + 4 + (5, 6) = 25
attack roll: 1d20 + 9 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 9 + 2 = 28
damage roll: 1d6 + 6 + 4 + 2d6 ⇒ (3) + 6 + 4 + (1, 3) = 17

![]() |

Wayreth, you just take the full amount of the damage. It's on my turn that I can choose to heal you of the damage you took and take it myself, not right now. Still, keep up the good work! We needed your damage on this!

![]() |

Ok, I'll mark the full damage then. Thought it was automatic like shield other. XD

![]() |

Well, the transfer happens automatically on Ethendril's turn he can choose to turn off the link, but re-estabilishing it takes time.
Will Save Harlis: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (12) + 10 = 22
Will Save Daylight: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
"By the Shining Blade!" Harlis curses mildly in frustration as his mount succumbs once more to the pulsing wave of madness. "I hope by Iomedae that the effort of this taxes the nightmare tree too!"
Waiting again to see if others are affected before choosing who to help. Also I hope it can't do those every round.
