LN outsider

Advice

Hey,

I am looking for a race of outsiders. I wish them to be neutral or lawful neutral. I plan on them serving the LN god of death and the underworld, he rules over the gray abyss.

The outsiders would be subservient to the deity and be his intermediaries to the mortal realm.

Any suggestions on what might be usable for this?

Thanks.

Inevitables, perhaps?

You might also consider checking out Modrons. No idea if they've been updated since 2e though...

the 3.5 versions were in The last April issue of Dragon magazine that got released years back

Aeons will be coming in Bestiary 2, I think. N outsiders.

If you have the material, I'd bring back the Rilmani. Exemplars of neutrality, very big on maintaining proper balance in the universe, natural death no doubt being part of that equation. There's at least four flavors of Rilmani, though I think only two were available throughout 3.x. Planewalker.com might have updated versions of them.

I would, however, only use the visuals from their 2E Planescape material(where they were cool humanoids with a sort of hooded uniform theme) rather than the lousy 3rd Edition image(poorly molded golden Ken dolls...).

My players stay out:

Spoiler:
The actual goddess of death in my homebrew actually used to be a rilmani, in fact!

Also, <3 Modrons.

Death and LN?, go for the inevitable concept but actually use shadows as base monster. Use them as grim reapers that enforce death.

A race of "Shadow" Inevitables sounds Awesome.

Otherwise I have to say Modrons and Inevitables sound really sucky for Outsiders serving a god of Death. They're robots and geometric shapes for cryin' out loud.

If you want to use pre-published monsters that are LN outsiders, well, you've also got Thri Kreen (praying mantis) and a race of humanoid ants (can't remember the name). If either sounds okay, go for it.

Other LN monsters that are either not Outsiders or are not LN but still seem like they could fit with a LN god of Death, well, Shadows can be neutral; Skulks, Dark Stalkers and/or Shadar Kai if you want to play a bit with the origin or purpose of these in the published text.

Yeah, go with a version of Inevitables (the marut would work well as a base to start from).

Modrons, formians, and axiomites don't seem as thematically appropriate for the death theme and/or the subservient to a deity bit.

Thanks for the advice and ideas. So far I am thinking of a kind of Inevitable Shadow and some combination based on the Shadar Kai with some of the Dark Stalker stuff. I do like Thri Kreen so I may have them have four arms and with an insectile face and hive mindeded.

I would like them to be on par with Celestials and Fiends but neither good nor evil and with the ability to equally battle both. What kinds of powers would you suggest for that?

Although they do work for/with the god of death it does not need to be their true focus. They mostly seek to keep the natural laws of the universe in tact. They fight to keep the creatures of the Far Realm at bay as well as keeping celestials and fiends from running rampant over the mortal realms.

Actually, don't use the shadow, use the wraith.

Wraiths are already portrayed as grim reaper, they drain CON, and the deck of many things death card summons a Dread Wraith for Single Kombat.

Lifesense ability also can allow it to clearly identify undead.

If you do leave in sunlight powerlessness, you may give them the following:

at will - as a move action: Shadow Jump 10ft/hit die
3/day - as a inmediate action:(so they can do it right after teleporting in or to create a are to jump into)Widened Deeper Darkness

Greater Teleport, Planeshift(same as most outsiders.)

and of course, still make them into inevitables.
They'd be pretty badass. Everything suddenly darkening and all of a sudden a Grim Reaper shows up. Sure you can run, but he'll just vanish into the shadows and reappear next to you. Also, every hit drains your very life force(con).
I'd be afraid -_-
Both in real life and as character. And any outsiders not immune to ability drain damn well better are afraid too. I'd say they make pretty fine enforcers.

It would be the greatest joke ever if, contrary to popular belief, every mortal that dies becomes a monodrone. :)
