Response to Kazador's question:

"I have said as much. Whatever is going on it's a danger to my village. I need to keep them safe."

Followng Kazador's charge:

Fyrtor pauses a moment and stares intently at the dwarf. "If it is so important to you to keep your home a secret that you would ask my oath, I'll give it to you. I swear to keep the location a secret"

The Sonder is as ready as it's going to be without a full refit. Those aboard must now decide whether to sail for Kazador Gravr or Helm.

Okay, I guess we'll take it as read that Captain Blackskull is okay with bringing Fyrtor in on the main plot.

Following Fyrtor's pledge, and Captain Blackskull's silent nod of assent, Mel nods. She gestures to Fyrtor to join them and speaks quietly to avoid being overheard by the general crew. "All right. So here's the story. There have been a series of attacks on the Bishopric's southern reaches. They've consistently been undertaken by races from the great desert to the south. Orcs, as at Brookside and Kazad Gravr, or in your case it seems to be goblins -- but it matches the pattern very well. They're unusually persistent and unusually well coordinated."

"The reason for the coordination is that they're being manipulated by a third party: the Elven Council." She holds up a hand as Fyrtor sputters and starts to ask a question. "Bear with me, you can ask all your questions in a moment. The reason the elves are using orcs and goblins to attack the Bishopric has to do with broader geopolitics. Young King Stephen of Iustia is in an expansionist mood, and has replaced all of the advisors who don't favor war with hotheads like himself. The Council apparently believes a war between the Conclave and Iustia is imminent."

"The Council wants to position elven troops in the Bishopric, to give themselves a better starting position when the war with Iustia breaks out. And either they're too damned arrogant to ask the Bishop for an alliance, or they want to conceal their purpose. So they've been arranging attacks on the Bishopric by proxy. The idea is to manufacture a crisis in the Bishopric so that the elven troops can come in and 'rescue' the Bishopric, and then conveniently not leave. They have agents who are manipulating the orcs -- and apparently goblins. We caught one, a bard named Elrin Weh who tricked two whole tribes of orcs into assaulting Brookside with false messages sent by enchanted animal messengers. Both tribes thought the assault was the other tribe's idea. The Bishop has Elrin Weh in custody now."

"The Elven Council has also apparently been employing Hands of the Reaper, a criminal organization, as information brokers and thugs. But the Reaps have apparently also been working with Iustia. The pirate captain we captured yesterday -- whom we still need to interrogate, by the way -- was receiving information from the Reaps that made it possible for her to intercept shipping carrying sensitive shipments."

She sighs wearily. "It's quite a tangle. At the moment, we're stuck with a difficult choice. Our immediate goal is to head inland by river to Kazad Gravr -- the details of that expedition are Kazador's, and I'll let him decide what and how much to say about it. But at the same time we now have an extremely dangerous prisoner who may have valuable information whom we need to get into a secure cell as soon as possible. The original plan was to take her ship, and send her and any other prisoners back to Helm with Captain Blackskull and her marines. But the Serpent isn't going to sail anywhere ever again, I think. So now we have one damaged boat and two destinations, and never, ever enough time."

"So there you have it. Fyrtor, any questions? And then we have to decide what to do: on to Kazad Gravr, or back to Helm to deliver van Beem?"

Thanks, Mel. Somewhere in the busyness I forgot to have Errde respond after hearing from the others.

Blackskull nods tersely. "That about sums it up. I'd like to get this prisoner in a secure location as soon as possible."

Not trying to send a voice from on high to influence your decisions. Just playing Errde and her motivations.

Fyrtor listents quietly after Mel tells him to hold his questions. Throughout her tale his face grows increasingly incredulous. When she finishes he stares at her stunned for a moment, then he looks to each of the others in turn seeking confirmation of her words and finds solemn expressions and nodding heads. "You're serious aren't you?! ... That ...that is a lot to take in. I do have questions, like why would we be going to Kazad Gravr, but I suppose they must wait. Whatever you decide to do I want to accompany you. Either way it sounds like we have a long journey before us.

Fyrtor:

Druids generally don't embrace scrolls, a major tool of civilization, and druids who have sought this level of isolation are even less likely to scribe scrolls.

Kazador:

It's about a week's sail to Kazador Gravr.

The Series is really, fundamentally, structurally beaten up. Not sure what would manage it...

"It took us a week of sailing to get here," Mel says. "But that was with an undamaged ship. And we had fair weather and good winds. We may be somewhat slower on the way back, considering the damaged mast."

A horrible thought occurs to her. "And also assuming we don't run into that sea serpent again. We fed it salt pork and the Captain threatened it with the fight of its life if it wanted to take the Sonder. But it knew we were planning to fight another ship -- and something in the water ate that pirate that jumped overboard. If it's been following us, it might decide that with the Sonder damaged we're easier prey, and decide to go for us after all. Hitto. I hope I'm wrong about that. Wouldn't be the first time."

She shakes her head and continues. "Anyway ... assuming no serpents, or that we fight it and win, let's call it ten days to Helm. Then however long it takes us to repair the Sonder. I imagine the repairs will be much quicker with access to a well-equipped shipyard and a crew of experienced shipwrights than we could manage on our own. After that it'll take another week of sailing to get back here, and however long it takes to get us to Kazad Gravr after that. I'm not sure how long that might be, exactly. Another week? Ten days? Anyway, I suspect that the loss of the Serpent has cost us on the order of a month's delay, give or take a few days."

Fyrtor considers for a moment how determined Kazador seems to be on going to Kazad Gravr as fast as possible and the debt he owes him. Then he speaks up, "There may be another way. If we don't need to travel at sea there is a spell I know that will create a raft that will move as I direct. Perhaps we could use that to allow a small group of us to go to the dwarf'a home while the rest sail to Helm on the Sonder."

"Well, that walk would be long, wet, and salty," Mel says wryly, "Considering we're on an island in the sea at the moment."

"Our original plan for reaching Kazad Gravr was to sail upriver through the orc lands," she goes on. "Fyrtor, if your magic can supply us with a river-worthy vessel for the key people we need in Kazad Gravr, then that will get us almost back on schedule, I think. The Sonder drops us off at the river mouth, and we head inland while it goes back to Helm to drop off van Beem and get repairs. Once those are done, Tiyeri brings the Sonder back to collect us."

Mel beams at Fyrtor. "That is probably the best news I've heard in days!"

A new plan in place, thanks to Fyrtor, the Sonder sails to the mouth of the river and Fyrtor casts his spell.

Decide how many rafts you'd like to cast.

Common sense indicates these rafts will be hard to take upstream but they seem magically capable of propelling themselves against the current, which is extremely convenient!

Time to pick who's coming and say goodbye to the Sonder.

Kelian asks tentatively as you get ready to head out "Mel, Kazador, I want to come. I want to help."

It'll be a trade off, more travel time, but at higher risk." Here Fyrtor pauses a moment in thought. Then he continues, " Also, how is everyone at swimming? Myself, I can swim a bit, but not really very well. I would feel much more comfortable if I could take some time to brew up a few concoctions that make swimming much easier. If something were to happen and we were to fall off the rafts, or if they were to be dispelled it's very possible that one or more of us would not survive. If everyone else is confident in their swimming ability I'll just make one up for myself and we can be off. It's up to you. Fyrtor looks pointedly at the dwarves in their heavy armor and at Kelian who's capabilities he has yet to see. "Drowning seems a terrible way to die..."

Alright we have a map up. *ominous music* Feel free to distribute yourselves on the rafts.

Once Fyrtor creates the rafts, they begin flowing naturally upstream. The land is very dry and barren with this river flowing quickly through it. It appears that this river may often be much smaller but is larger now due to recent rains.

Checks (likely prof sailor but you can suggest a different skill) will be needed by whoever is steering each raft.

The captain of the Sonder watches his ship until it limps over the horizon. Only then does he turn his back towards the sea, facing instead the continent and all of it's history. Memory fragments haunt the trees, the ground, the river. That he doesn't know when he'll next be sea-side makes the continent seem even drearier.

This'll be pleasant.

"Drowning's nasty," Muse seconds Fyrtor. "Wouldn't recommend. I'm not the world's strongest swimmer, but Ashber's good at everything. Still, there's a thousand and one reasons why I might not be able to depend on ghostly beneficence, so I'd feel a lot safer with a potion on hand to chug." He waves his hand vaguely at the waterway they'll be traveling down. "Not go the way of these poor souls."

As the rafts begin moving up river Frytor trusts that Captain Muse will guide theirs well and sits down at the back and he he gonna working on making one of his concoctions. He pulls out various roots, herbs and resins and starts to process them. After a few minutes go by Fyrtor attempts to strike up a conversation, "Captain, how long have you been a sailer? You look as though you have traveled far and wide. You must have learned all sorts of interesting things. Have you learned any other languages? What is the most interesting place you've been? We will be here a while, tell me more of what you've seen."

I'd like to find a way for Fyrtor to learn that Grip on know the elemental languages so we can start working on me learning those from him, but I'd also like to learn more backstory stuff too :) I'd ask more about talking with Dad, but we should do that when GM can facilitate, so that will have to wait.

Well, it makes sense to divide the six characters evenly between the two rafts, and I suspect the dwarves probably want to stick together. So if Fyrtor and Brolin are on Raft 1, that means Kelian is with them and Mel is with Kazador and Algric on Raft 2.

Mel is wrapped up in her own thoughts. She paddles steadily when it is her turn to do so, but she says little.

Likewise, Kazador and Algrim remained taciturn. Kazador due to the last battle, and Algric due to the unnatural state of dwarves being on water.

The travel upriver through the desolate wasteland is quiet but not exactly peaceful. The rafts round a rend of the river around some hills as you get close to the location of Kazador Gravr. But you hear a creaking noise and look over your shoulder. Sailing upriver behind you is a ship with full sails, navigating at dangerous speed through the tight river.

DC 14 Prof sailor, +4 bonus for Mel:

It is a Concordate ship.

You see surprised figures on board spot you and begin shouting at each other.

"We've got company!" Mel yells to the other raft, pointing back at the ship once she has their attention. "This will be interesting," she adds in a more normal voice to Kazador and Algric. "That's a Concordat ship. And I don't think they're happy to see us here. Jumalatar, vihaan tätä."

Elven:
"Goddess, I hate this."

"If this comes down to a fight I'd rather not be standing on a raft made of random bits of flotsam. Let's get to shore." She nods towards the left bank and starts paddling in that direction.

Then he checks to make sure his concoction is secure in his speed sheath and grabs one of the oars and begins paddling for all he's worth, counting on the captain's ability to steer them well.

Oh dear. I hope Kazador or Algric have some good STR checks, otherwise Raft 2 is going to get run over.

Just to be clear, it's fairly apparent these elves are headed to Kazador Gravr as there isn't much else around.

The two rafts are skillfully brought close enough to the bank to allow their occupants to leap off. The Elven ship bears down on the rafts. The dozen crewman are visible now as the bow of the ship snashes into the rear raft.

Acrobatics to leap to the nearby banks, climb to get on the elven ship, or some other option.

The acrobatics aid makes sense.

Mel sees a dozen elves on board the small boat. Six of them are busy with the sail and rudder. Three are rushing toward the sides of the boat with bows. One dressed in furs is standing on deck holding a sprig of holly. Two are wearing ornate robes and are also rushinf to the side to look at you.

Mel:

The elder elf in irnate robes says "Prepare to fire but do not slow down. Whatever they are doing here cannot be in our best interests."

Kazador stood there, the enemy ship coming. Who did he listen to? He couldn’t decide. Thr last time he took the initiative the consensus had been that he had nearly ruined everything. He couldn’t afford to make a similar mistake. The elven ship loomed. He wanted to board, he wanted to fight them. But could he risk it? Would everyone turn on him again? Could he risk losing the few people left in his life. The words of power were on his lips, but there wasn’t enough time...

She sees the elves on the ship approaching with weapons.

They must be headed for Kazad Gravr, she realizes. We can't let them get there ahead of us.

"Kazador," she calls. His head swings toward her. "Go."

May Ostara forgive me, she thinks, pulls her bow, and fires at the one with a sprig of holly.

Druidic:
Let winter's hand be on my enemies hearts

He casts winter's grasp

When he finishes ice suddenly forms on the deck of the deck of the ship. That done he turns again to the rafts, "Muse! Kelian! on shore NOW!"

I opened Mel's spoiler - ignore this if it was a proximity based Mel-can-hear-this, but if it was just elves speaking Elven, Muse speaks the language too. If he couldn't hear it, though, his assumption is that people are well-meaning unless proven otherwise; just because it's a Concordate ship doesn't mean that these people are responsible for orcs attacking anyone. Either way, Muse's shouted response is the same.

"Kestä! Puhutaan tästä! Ei tarvetta taisteluun!"

Elven:
Hold up! Let's talk about this! No need for a fight!

Brookside Campaign Journal

Fyrtor, we're using the current map. I've updated it to show what's going on right now, including the elves.

Kelian Acrobatics: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16

Kelian leaps quickly to shore, landing safely.

GM screen:

Spellcraft: 1d20 ⇒ 6
Dispel check: 1d20 ⇒ 14

Brolin's speaks but the elves seem to ignore him while Fyrtor throws a spell onto the ship and Mel fires. Her arrow strikes the druid, drawing a wince of pain. But as Fyrtor finishes his spell, the younger elf in ornate robes clutches his fist quickly and Fyrtor feels the magic of his spell shunted away harmelssly into the environment.

DC 15 spellcraft:

Fyrtor's spell was successfully counterspelled.

The ship continues rushing forward and crushes the raft Kazador and Algric are on, dumping the dwarves into the water.

Kazador and Brolin may act then the elves will be up in the order.
