Kazador The Clanless |
Stealth: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 1 = 15
”Cast yer spell. I’m ready.” Kazador made a practice swing with his hammer.
Brookside GM |
Well the silence spell does change things a bit since I assume you are all close together once you're heading in.
The group slinks forward toward the corner, taking advantage of the silence spell with extreme stealth. Except Algric. He trips and falls with what would be a loud clatter. He falls behind while the rest burst around the corner.
Surprise round! But you're going to have a hard time not being within 20 ft of Kazador! Position as you like in the main hallway proper but with line of sight of the orcs. Take a standard or a move.
Fyrtor Smithson |
Fyrtor charges forward his saber held high.
Charge: 1d20 + 13 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 13 + 2 = 29

Fyrtor will also dismiss his heightened awareness to increase his initiative
After slashing at the orc Fyrtor moves quickly into a parrying stance.

Melira Elenariel |
Stealth: 1d20 + 22 + 20 ⇒ (12) + 22 + 20 = 54
Mel moves into position and lofts an arrow at the same orc Fyrtor attacked.
Attack: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (1) + 9 = 10
The arrow hits, but bounces harmlessly off his armor. Mel's eyebrows rise in surprise. As the shaft falls to the floor, however, she notices that it seems to be missing its arrowhead.

Likewise Kazador charged in. He held back the desire to scream a war cry. Instead, he let his hammer do the talking.
Captain Brolin Muse |
We might have a hard time all packing in here - especially Nelly.
Staying out of the archers' way, Muse cuts across the battle field diagonally.

Kelian rushes forward to strike the orc Kazador is attacking.

He strikes the orc hard, leaving him all but dead.
Turion still to go. You can position yourself and Nel somewhere you'd have line of sight/charge.
Kazador, Algric is prone from tripping while stealthing and can stand or fire while prone.
Nelly |
Nel opts to defend the passage...if any enemy attempts to get past her, she'll ready to maul him.
Ready action to 5-foot-step and attack if an Orc moves into range.
Túrion Alagostor |
Turion gestures at the Orcs, and below those in front of Brolin and Fyrtor, the floor suddenly drops away, revealing a hole filled with jagged spikes. Even the floor below them slightly warps to adapt to the new reality, suggesting that staying there might not be save for long.
Spiked Pit, Fall Damage plus Piercing Spikes: 3d6 + 2d6 ⇒ (1, 2, 5) + (5, 3) = 16
Reflex Save DC 20 to avoid - 22 for the one that looks healthier. Ending one's turn inside the cyan dots forces a Reflex save with +2 bonus to avoid falling in. That means Brolin and Fyrtor can take a normal turn, but would do well to 5-foot step away after :)
Kazador The Clanless |
Much cooler to fire prone now and stand up rnd1
Brookside GM |
Ah I just re-read prone and he can only fire while prone with a crossbow. So Algric stands up this round. Sorry I forgot that.
Cool, Turion. The pit line of spells is a personal favorite.

A pit opens up underneath the orcs. The more wounded orc leaps to the side while the healthier orc falls within. The wounded orc strikes at Brolin but his massive greataxe whizzes past the captain without touching him. The lieutenant bellows and rushes around the pit, shoving Kelian out of the way to get himself a foothold on your side of the pit. Kelian strikes at the orc as he is shoved, landing a significant blow. The other orc strikes at Kazador but misses. You see the doors begin to open.
Party, GO!

Kazador wanted nothing more than to roar out the battle cries of his ancestors. Not doing so made it feel like he was going to explode. Eyes burning with hatred, he swung his hammer in an arc, uncaring about his own defense. There were two orcs in front of them, and if they wanted to keep their heads they'd have to step back. The runes on the hammer glowed green, leaving a magical after-trail as it cut through the air. These filth had murdered his friends, his family, his people. They squatted in a home that they had neither the skill to make nor the right to be in. Hatred burned within him, and the only thing that would help was their deaths.

Algric got to his feet, face burning with shame. Two arrows quickly flew through the air, at the orc in front of him. Like Kazador, he sought to cleanse his home of the orcs. Unlike his thane, he had to content himself with fighting from afar. This brought back memories to the dwarf. Of desperate tunnel fighting. Of collapsing ceilings and abandoned defenses as the orc hordes swept through. Of atrocities in the dark...
Fyrtor Smithson |
The orc lieutenant distracted by the display of Kazador's fury was unprepared for whistling blade at his back, but the unstable ground beneath him threw Fyrtor's usually true aim off.

Damage: 1d6 + 6 + 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 6 + (1) + 2 = 11
Yelling a curse no one could hear Fyrtor the stepped back onto more solid ground stood proudly with a look of defiance in his face awaiting the orc's attacks.

Melira Elenariel |
Hrm. I was hoping to five-foot step, free action boots-of-haste, and then make two shots. But the positioning of Túrion, Algric, and Nelly means there's no place with a clear line of sight that I can five foot step to that isn't occupied. So I guess I'll move for position and make one shot.
"Pardon me, Túrion," Mel says as she steps in front of the other elf, and launches a shot at the orcish leader.

Forgot that Turion's pit requires the orc on the far right to save again. Taking care of it now in case that changes Brolin's turn.
The orc standing on the unstable ground of the pit flails his arms as he falls into the pit. Brolin can barely see him lying dead on the floor of the pit as the other orc struggles with the spiked walls.
Gosh... This pit is rolling really high damage... It's dealt 44 damage so far...
Mel's shot misses the orc lieutenant while Fyrtor and Kazador land serious blows.
Kazador, I see Algric's normal attack routine as +11/+6 but here I see +16/+9? Can you break that down for me. Also, he's still a level 6 warrior, not level 7.
Algric_Graniteson |
Typo! Don’t know what I was thinking...think I might have been looking at the wrong profile. And he didn’t level up? Alright.
To Hit: +12/+7 (1d20+6 BaB +4 Dex + 1 MW +1 WF)

Túrion Alagostor |
Apologies, Mel. Was not my intent.
Moving forward, next to Nelly, Túrion tried to get a better view...and sees the doors open.
Expecting enemy reinforcements, he readies another spell.
Grease on the yellow area - DC 18 Reflex(10+5+1+2) or fall prone - GM call if that is subject to Creatures subjected to an effect intended to push them into the pit (such as bull rush) do not get a saving throw to avoid falling in if they are affected by the pushing effect. - it is very clearly the intent to let them slide down. Of course, any that follow are welcome to try and move through the area at half speed with acrobatics...
Brookside GM |
Algric's shots also miss the orc lieutenant who stands strong in his heavy armor.
Brolin may yet go.
Captain Brolin Muse |
It's surreal, everyone swinging weapons and fighting and dying without making a sound. Almost dreamlike. The unreality of the scene is reinforced by the ground opening up and swallowing the orc that the captain had been fending off - but that was probably a spell. While Muse can't hear the sound of his own frantic breathing, he can feel his heart pounding in his chest.
Glancing behind him to make sure he isn't backing into anyone (he's got no way of sensing anything outside his field of vision) the captain quicksteps his way away from the dangerously sloped ground. Looking around, it seems like there's only one threat remaining. Making use of his elongated arms, Muse attacks from behind Fyrtor. Unable to explain what he's doing, he hopes that his sudden appearance doesn't distract the druid at a critical moment.

My mistake. Fyrtor's earlier attack just barely missed the orc lieutenant. I mis-remembered the AC.

Kelian smite, enhanced: 1d20 + 10 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 10 + 2 + 1 = 20
Two more orcs rush forward through the open door but Turion conjures grease beneath them as they run, causing them to slide into the pit, howling noiselessly in anger. A third orc walks forward carefully and strikes at Kazador but the hearty dwarf deflects the blow. The orc lieutenant now lashes out in anger against the dwarf who defies him. He is struck twice by the orc's ax then the orc shifts his weight with great speed and shoves Kazador against the wall with his shield, knocking the dwarf to the ground. He then steps closer to flanking position with his ally. Kelian raises his sword with a look of righteous anger on his face. The sword briefly glows white as it strikes at the orc lieutenant but the seasoned warrior sidesteps the blow.
34 damage to Kazador and prone. He has a specific line of feats for this as I realize it isn't normal. Party GO!
Melira Elenariel |
Mel clicks her heels together, then draws and fires two arrows at the orc lieutenant in rapid succession.
Attack bonuses: 5 BAB + 4 DEX + 1 enhance + 1 weapon focus + 1 point-blank shot + 1 haste - 2 deadly aim = +11
Attack 1: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (1) + 11 = 12
Attack 2: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (11) + 11 = 22
The first arrow proves to be missing its arrowhead again, and the second sails over the orc's shoulder as he dips down to bull rush Kazador. It bounces off the far wall and comes to rest on the floor.
I wonder if these arrows I got from the Concordat ship were sabotaged, somehow, Mel thinks. That's two of them whose arrowheads came loose.
Fyrtor Smithson |
Fyrtor motions for Kelian or Brolin to flank the lieutenant as he steps closer to Kazador and the orcs. The whole time he focuses his gaze on the beast. Then he waits for an opening fending off blows as he waits.
Fyrtor "studies" the lieutenant and takes a 5ft step then readies an attack

Retconning that I missed Kazador is a stable dwarf.
Kazador braces against the wall and just barely keeps his feet.
Kazador The Clanless |
Knocked against the wall, Kazador stumbled back. This was a warrior beyond his skill. He could taste cooler in his mouth. Not good. Not good at all.

Damage: 2d6 + 1d6 + 13 ⇒ (3, 6) + (6) + 13 = 28
Making matters worse, he has his back to the wall and the orc was pressing in. He didn’t have enough room to even swing his hammer! He tried to make room, but it was hard to do so with the swirling melee..
Brookside GM |
Kazador's hammer is deflected twice by the orc's shield. Now, for the first time, Kazador notices the lion's face on the shield. It seems so life-like that it could move on its own. But Algric and Fyrtor rush to assist the dwarf, both landing significant blows with their weapons.
Túrion Alagostor |
The Sylvan runes on Túrions robe visibly flare up as he focuses his attention on the orc leader that seemed to give his companions trouble.
A barrage of magical projectiles home in on the elven mages target, striking without error - and causing the orc to fall into a grotesque silent laughter.
Magic Missiles: 5d4 + 5 ⇒ (1, 1, 3, 4, 4) + 5 = 18
Brookside GM |
The orc's deadly serious face cracks into forced, silent laughter, as he doubles over, barely able to defend himself.
Brolin may yet go.
Captain Brolin Muse |
Their surprise ambush isn’t going as complicationlessly as could be hoped - but it’s hard to think of a more pressing need for Muse’s limited spells, so he casts his second second circle spell of the day - and his last. Haste.
Casting it on everyone but Turion.
Túrion Alagostor |
Casting it on everyone but Turion.
:( Do you not like me? Just kidding, it seems an obvious tactical choice - just making sure: does "everyone but" include Nelly? Mostly for future reference...
Melira Elenariel |
Also bear in mind that Mel has boots of haste. So far she's used 1 round out of 10 for the day.
Captain Brolin Muse |
Includes Nelly; I can get seven people. Might as well keep those boots in reserve, since there’s little point buffing the arcanist’s full attack.
Brookside GM |
Started crying foul for casting in the zone of silence... remembered that medium spells are silent and weird... Well played... Won't be able to update until tomorrow but there are more orcs coming...
Kazador The Clanless |
One who trips, one who disarms, one who... ;)
Túrion Alagostor |
Lets just hope they don't show up from the other corridor in some impeccable timing - if there's more coming from the door, we still got an advantageous tactical position currently.(I mean, even those who climb up out of the pit need to secure a foothold, or risk falling right back in - something I dare say they are unlikely to survive.)
Brookside GM |
Ooh... Good ideas Kazador. ;)
Fyrtor lands a blow on the orc leader while Kazador and Mel miss. Brolin and Turion cast useful spells. The orc leader remains bent double, laughing, but moves carefully past Kazador and Algric.
5 ft step between them. Rules are unclear but seems allowable.

Another orc walks carefully across the grease out of the hallway and strikes at Fyrtor but misses. He then finds himself slipping into the bit and tries to grab a hold of the edge but fails and falls in. The orc already standing near Kazador attempts to land a mighty blow with his greataxe but misses. Brolin and Fyrtor spy an orc standing in the hallway who appears to be casting a spell that takes some time.
Party, GO!
Melira Elenariel |
This guy's hard to hit, Mel thinks.
Opting not to use Deadly Aim, because some damage is better than none.

Attack 2: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (14) + 13 = 27
But her arrows glance off the orc's armor and shield, the spang noise of the ricochet conspicuous in its absence.
Yeah. So far I'd have to say Túrion is MVP of this fight.
Brookside GM |
Not sure why you were so sure about the second shot.
Mel's second shot lands home, drawing a grimace of pain from the orc lieutenant.
Roll damage.
Melira Elenariel |
Kazador missed with both of his previous attacks, and I because I read too quickly, I misinterpreted his second damage roll (a 28) as an attack roll that missed, implying that the guy had an AC of 29+. I'm glad he doesn't, btw.

Also unwilling to let the orc go free, Algric moved to keep the orc surrounded. While far less deadly than Kazador’s hammer, Algric’s axe still lashed out. The archer was far too angry to fight from afar.

Mel and the dwarves combine for just enough martial prowess to bring the orc down.

Indicating for Nelly to let him move into a more advantageous position, Túrion sees the Orc leader going down with satisfaction. Some more Orcs had fallen into the pit, and regrouping would be desirable before they managed to come out of there...but one more Orc fought on.
Pointing his finger at the last combatant visible to him, Túrion calls the searing lances of fire into his service again.
