Dark Ages Vampire - Bloodlines

Bloodlines is a continuation of the now defunct table top Dark Ages Vampire game wherein the PC's have created lineal descendants throughout the ages.

Remember - only those listed get votes. Of course influencing their Childer can go a long way to getting a vote.

Social Combat:

Let me first thank Sir Dunstan and his excellent Game of Thrones campaign as the inspiration for this rules tweak. A shout out to Vitaliano who also does an excellent job as a player in that campaign.

Game of Thrones has a Social Combat system that, while not translatable directly, I used as inspiration for this campaign.

This is a proposed rules set and I am more than happy to hear feedback from Players before I implement it in full.

Roleplaying is still required to get your point across. However, I think a mechanical system could be beneficial for this scenario, a scenario quite unlike anything I have ever done in a Vampire game before.

Making My Case

To convince a “voter” to side with your Sire, you may roll the following set of Attributes and Abilities:

1. Against someone who is clearly NOT in your favor --- Manipulation+Subterfuge+Politics
2. Against someone who is NEUTRAL – Charisma+Expression+Politics

The difficulty of all rolls is that Cainites Willpower. You will need to score as many successes as they have Willpower to win the contest. Once you engage the voter, you will only have three rounds to make your case and can only attempt do so one time per night.

If you have Presence – Awe or Enrancement, you may attempt to use these powers in conjunction with the above roll. Each success utilizing that Discipline gives you one more success on your total roll.

Beware, failing in using Presence in Elysium can lead to Sanctions by Thomas Brexiano.

Also beware, Cainites may try to turn this system around on you…

But What if Someone Else Tries This on a Voter I just Brought to my Side?

Amount of successes is a key factor here, you will want to score as many success as you can to ensure that a rival does not try to take that vote from you!

Certain NPC’s already believe that others are in their favor and would never change their votes. Those will be the toughest cookies to break.

Note this system cannot be used on:

Your In-Clan rivals, no amount of sweet talking or bribes will change their minds they all want this position badly.

Prince Narses, he simply will not entertain such discourse. Of course, this does not mean you cannot try to get into the ears of one of his Childer to have them speak with him…

Discerning My Quarry’s Intent

How can I tell if someone is for or against me despite what they are saying?

Make a Perception+Empathy+Politics roll.

The difficulty is 10, less that Cainites Humanity score. Those closer to the Beast are much harder to read. For every Century over 300 years that Cainite has lived, the DC will be increased by 1, topping out at 10, as these Cainites have well and truly mastered this game to have existed for so long in the first place.

Once you engage the voter, you will only have three rounds to ferret out their intent and can only attempt do so one time per night. You will need to score as many successes as they have Willpower to ascertain their intent.

If you have Auspex – Read the Soul or Invade the Mind, you may attempt to use these powers in conjunction with the above roll. Each success utilizing that Discipline gives you one more success on your total roll.

How else can I make my case?

The use of Presence, while frowned upon, is much less cause for censure than using Dominate. Dominate does not work on a Cainite whose blood is closer to Caine than your own. If you seek to use Dominate to convince a voter (or perhaps one of the Childer?) to vote for your Sire, it would be best used elsewhere in the city.

Boons – the boon system of quid pro quo can also be used to gain votes. You will need to offer something of course that that voter does not have or cannot get from another candidate.

Eliminate my rivals. This one is obvious though failure to do so without detection may subject YOU to the Final Death!

Baldemar shakes his head, "I fear my memory of that meeting is vague Father".

Cardinale sits on the ledge feet dangling just above the water, "They seek to destroy us my children. One of these creatures' just took beloved Sister Bellarosa. He must have poisoned her mind with the Devil's words, she said she was going wit him willingly!

I assume you are allied with Baldemar some way Sir Geoffroi? Are you a Teuton as well?"

The trip to your Haven is uneventful both you an your Sire are in quiet contemplation once you arrive and enter through the front doors to the main reception where the Mortal House conducts business.

That is the moment it is clear something is amiss. The handful of spirits which were not destroyed drift aimlessly about the room. A handful of the Zombu defenders are decimated.

No Mortal servants are in sight.

Yeti is in the middle of the room, a stake driven through his heart through his back.

Seated in one of the far desks is a hulk of a man who appears handsome and middle aged. He smiles as you both enter placing the paperwork he was looking through down on the desk. "Welcome home Doctors. I trust the Conclave went well?"

"Ambrogino Giovanni", states Lord Benne, "I trust that you realize this is our Haven and while I am no Tzimisce to be offended by unwelcome visitors, those who are disruptive gain my ire".

Ambrogino stands and bows, "A thousand pardons Lord Benne for the intrusion into my family ancestral home which you and your Childe now occupy but you did leave the door open.

Besides, I have matters to discuss with you that I would prefer my Grandfather know nothing about".

Looking back at the observation results: the other "high" clans, I either failed to read them or what I saw gives little reason for small-talk.

As such, if there is time, Franz would attempt to make contact with the Nosferatu, the Setites, and the Tremere, in that order - there's "rough" topics he would attempt to use to initiate small-talk, and I rolled for each of those.
The Nosferatu seemed to scan the room as well, and had taken note of Franz doing the same. Franz is a fledgling and does it to learn, but there's something to be said for staying informed through vigilance.
Charisma+Subterfuge: 4d10 + 2d10 ⇒ (8, 7, 3, 1) + (6, 8) = 33
The Setites, being moorish/eastern, don't quite seem like "regulars" in Venice. Franz also has relatives at least in Byzantium, and his trade business reaches several cities in the middle east or north africa.
Charisma+Finance: 4d10 + 2d10 ⇒ (1, 9, 9, 2) + (7, 6) = 34
The Tremere were called upon to test Talisman. That kind of ability, plus what he knows about their clan and discipline suggests them to be a kind of scholars. Franz broadly learned about a few topics himself, and hopes to learn more in unlife.
Charisma+Academics: 4d10 + 1d10 ⇒ (1, 5, 10, 10) + (4) = 30
Since the Court Scene is closing, I was not opting for a direct interaction and instead just gave some general approach, trying to build up initial contact with the representatives present of those clans.

One of the Setites is just exiting on his own. The other has been approached by a female that arrived late but was seated at the Lasombra table.

The lone Nosferatu left is seated at a table by himself.

Two Female Tremere is seated at the table (one a PC) along with the one Male Tremere that appears to require magic to move about.

Staggered by the powerful backhand, Einar grits his teeth and lunges forward with his sword, throwing all his effort into offense. My shield's no good against this monster - my only chance is to kill it before it kills me.

Soaked either 1 or 2 damage; either way he's at -1 dice pool now due to health. Not sure if Einar only gets his armor pool against lethal, or if wearing armor lets him use his Stamina as well.

Sabre attack (3 Dexterity + 3 Melee - 1 Health / DC 7): 5d10 ⇒ (4, 4, 9, 8, 5) = 30 = 2 successes!
+1 difficulty armor; -1 dice hurt/injured health status.

Durdona takes a seat as the announcement is made. It's nice to see a woman in power. What effect that will have I do not yet know. I appears there is at least another night of these machinations.

She stays still until the crowd in the room thins, and the Prince is not currently speaking with someone. She will approach. "My Prince?" Once he acknowledges her she will continue.

"If I may ask, where would I be staying? At your convenience, I do wish to speak with you about a matter brought to me by Lord Bajazet al Nasir through his Childe. I would also like to discuss if there is a way that I might assist you in the proceedings tomorrow evening?"

Cardinale sighs, "Yes, the instruments of Gods will to use against these fiends. Due to the Pope's excommunication Claudio believed that bringing the weapons in himself they would be seized. He has foresight that one. Now I fear even bringing them to the Basilica, if only there was some other place to bring them..."

Lord Benne turns to you, "Do so, for now, leave him staked. I do not wish him to try to escape and cause problems. I shall discuss what needs to be discussed with you early tomorrow evening".

Within 30 minutes Court empties out and Narses finishes speaking with Mistress Fanchon who takes her leave. Narses turns his gaze towards you, "Very well. Come with me, I shall show you to where your quarters will be, at least temporarily".

Assuming you take his hand.

You feel the sensation of being sucked through vortex, same as the last time you made such a trip through the Shadows with a Lasombra. This time though, the transition is smoother less terrifying.

You arrive in a small room. It has no windows, in fact it has no doors!

"This is a sanctum beneath the city to which only I Valdemar and once Brexiano had knowledge of. One could call it a prison but it is not my intention for it to be so for you.

Speak, ask me what you will and I shall tell you what it is I believe you can do for me in the coming nights".

You've no doubt heard of the riots & unrest in Venice as of late. How the Pope has decreed that the city is to be excommunicated, and those who wish for salvation must leave. All for the sake of wealthy men squabbling over some affair or other--I haven't a clue as to what.

Know this--I am not going to leave. I know that I must do the Lord's work. When the rich bicker, it is always the poor who suffer the most for it--we both know this to be true. My faith lies in God alone--not in those who claim to teach His holy ways, and then condemn innocents to damnation for something they had no say in.

There is no need to weep for me. I am resolved to see this through to the end.

Tell Mother and Father that I love them, and will hold them ever in my heart. Tell Matteo that I love him, and I still remember the time he nailed my braid to the bed.

I do not know who they think in particular killed me but I do not think that matters to them in the sense that they will twist it to whichever way suits them. He turns to you both as you are all lost in the crowds and out of sight of the Inn, "I have made contact and begun to make headway. They focus on other matters now but soon enough, I shall convince Sergei to meet. Tell Petrankov I have been successful! Tomorrow, come back here again after Midnight and I will have more pertinent information as to where I can bring Sergei and when. Agreed?"
