Description: Sister Maria Bellarosa stands at a 5’6”, with long brown hair, deep blue eyes and clear pale skin. She commonly dresses in a black nun’s habit & wimple—the traditional garb of a woman of Christ. Underneath her habit, she is svelte & hardy, with a natural grace that tends to catch people’s eyes. She carries herself with a quiet dignity—and a nervous disposition at the same time.

History: Born in the city of Venice to a middle-class family of merchants, Maria was the youngest of six children, and the youngest of two sisters. Her childhood was spent being tormented by her older brothers and learning how to read the various books her father dealt in—over the course of her first fifteen years of life she became familiar with the Carolingian Cycle and other such works.

Alas, her teenage years would be marred by misfortune and poverty. Her father had accrued heavy debts with one of the banks of Venice, and the family lost most of their property to cover them. Her father fell into the clutch of drink, spending his nights in a morose & drunken haze; her mother tried her best to provide for her overburdened family, but her best efforts alone wouldn’t be enough; and the sons of the family were forced to take a variety of odd jobs to get by. One became a carpenter, another became a stonemason. The other two fell in with Venice’s criminal underworld, and Maria’s older sister was taken by sickness.

Maria was forced to turn to prostitution to earn money for her family; it was not an ideal career choice for her, but she had a pleasant enough face and an attractive enough body to make a living. Some nights, she even enjoyed her work. Until she reached the age of twenty, she worked the streets of Venice, until one night, after she serviced a client, the man pulled a knife on her and attempted to murder her. She was able to escape him, and she fled to the steps of one of Venice’s churches—La Basilica di Santa Maria Maddalena.

One of the nuns, Mother Sofia, took pity on her and offered her sanctuary within the church’s walls, and even offered Maria a way out of her so-called ‘sinful ways’: she could become a lay sister, and in so doing, find absolution from her past sins. The frightened girl accepted, and for two years, she would assist the nuns of La Basilica di Santa Maria Maddalena in providing for the poor and sick of Venice.
