Mr Blinky gets an AoO as he moves, right? Would a Trip combat maneuver be able to do anything, or is he holding anything to Disarm/Sunder, since those can be made in place of an AoO? I probably should have had Mr. Blinky grapple him last round instead of attacking, but too late now...

Abaos sees the wizard as he floats upwards, towards the ceiling. Ironically, he's now almost exactly in the same spot as the gambler! Huzzah! Unfortunately, he's not close enough. Too far away for Abaos to grab, and that's never a good thing. However, there is one escape route that Abaos can see, and, thinking quickly, deduces that the man is going to have to fly near him, somewhere, if he wants to escape. So, he stays put, and readies himself to spring....

Attempted Grapple, if it comes:
Grapple: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11Attempted Grapple, MoC: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16

I'm not certain if this is legal, because mid- air combat is weird. But I'm going to ready an action to attempt to grapple if he comes either in the square next to me or below me. Which may, of course, result in me missing completely and flopping to the floor like a fish, but Abaos will be ok. He's lucky.

Character sheet

So, how high would Mr. Blinky have to jump to reach Sneeg? Sounds like the ceiling is 15 feet up, so sneeg, who takes up a 5ft space, can't be more than 10ft from the ground Mr. Blinky can reach an adjacent 5ft space, so (if we assume that both characters only take up 5 vertical feet, which actually seems a little small for medium creatures) that would mean he needs to jump about 5 feet up to reach him. Does that sound right? Mid-air combat is indeed weird.

Naw, there’s zero. Last of them was killed by Iorskan. Just haven’t taken it off the map yet.

Round 8 (for real, this time)

Ozzy does not attack the howler, which has already died and disappeared. Instead, after picking up her spear (a move action) she hurries into the room where she can sense Mr. Blinky continuing to try to attack the wizard. She enters just in time to see him run at the wall and use it to direct his momentum upward, jumping into the air to try to catch him. (Didn't you also say that there was a desk there that Sneeg was hiding under? If so, Mr. Blinky would just be able to climb onto it, which is still an athletics check, but probably an easier one, and he wouldn't fall back to the ground after.)

Mr. Blinky Athletics: 1d20 + 8 - 2 ⇒ (14) + 8 - 2 = 20

Claw: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 211d4 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7

I thought about trying a grapple, but Sneeg would probably just teleport out of it, and the swift action teleport doesn't even provoke. Arg.

Ozzy traded her standard for another move action, so she can't attack, but because she picked up her reach weapon, she should now be threatening Sneeg.

Jen yells out a question about whether or not there are any more potential hidden creatures in the room. This is mostly directed towards Guthruc, to whom, in the heat of battle, she has forgotten a good deal of her trepidation towards. I'm sure it will return. He is, after all, a giant cannibalistic orc.

Presumably, though, someone will tell her about the third wizard? I'm not exactly sure what area he's in, so I'll hold off on moving Jen on the map... Also, if Guthruc is withholding the info for any reason, let me know and I'll retcon my turn. Again.

Jen really wishes she could See Invisibility, but, then again, it's quite situational, and she does have...

Rapidly moving to face the area in which Gurthruc smelled the "magic man", she lets her sleeves fall back as she prepares to cast the hardest spell she has all day. A giant cloud of golden particles, carefully contained by a tight reign on her magical energies so as not to blind, explodes forth.

Glitterdust, doesn't blind if possible. Otherwise, not casting it (yet another reason to retcon. Wheeee!)

Male Orc Barbarian (flesheater, true primitive) HP 47/47 : Rage (14/14) : Magic Excel doc of Stat Stuff

The "magic man" guthruc spoke of was sneeg. Guthruc doesn't do names very well.
There were 3 invisible things. One invisible thing flew off and outside of snake-guthruc's scent (either up the stairs or at the group of NPCs), one is now visible and tied up by guthruc's feet, the last is sneeg, with faerie fire making him visible.

EDIT:
Guthruc (maybe) noticing the searching look on his allies' faces conveys some info about what he gathered when he had the new sense. one fire smell fly away, one guthruc trap. Magic man fly over desk here.

They’re all tied up at the moment (in a blanket-bag that’s been tied off) though they’ll be trying to work their way free.

Female Tiefling Arcanist/4 -> Woah! Fancy stat numbers!

Jen considers her stick-like arms then decides, oh well, she does have a big whacking pole, might as well use it. Grabbing her quarterstaff (Oh, why did I get this dumb thing in darkwood?) she goes over to where the imp is tied up and attempts to bonk it.

Melee Attack: 1d20 ⇒ 7

Damage: 1d6 - 2 ⇒ (5) - 2 = 3

I don't know if that would hit. It's pretty low but the creature is completely tied up, so it's not like it should be hard to hit... That attack would be like a tap on the head, though, anyways.

Alright! I'm back. Let's go!

Mr. Blinky's AoO does eight damage.

Round Eight

Mr. Blinky, springing off the wall, leaps up at the flying wizard, lashing out with maw and claws. His mouth closes around Falgrim's leg, and the eidolon dangles in the air, briefly, scrabbling with raking claws to find a handhold and climb the airborne caster. There's a sound not unlike a baseball being hit out of the park as Sneeg's leg gives out under Mr. Blinky's weight.

Sneeg has taken 79 damage. He's on his . . . last leg. *snerk*

Unable to find purchase in the slippery, almost frictionless film that covers the wizard like an invisible and largely ineffectual carapace, Blinky falls back to the earth, the sudden absense of his weight sending the wizard he was hanging on careening into the ceiling. Though he auto-makes the DC for staying airborne after being attacked, so no worries there.

Sneeg screams out in pain, spinning in the air while his leg flops about uselessly. He wrests control of his flight, and then uses his supernatural teleportation ability to disapear in a cloud of purple smoke. Doesn't provoke an AoO

No way Sneeg continues to fight with single digit hitpoints, the kytons only have a couple rounds left in them, not long enough to escape the blanket, and Ralmog can't beat Guthruc's DC even if he rolled a 20, so we're out of initiative! Everyone can advance to level four! Unless you're already at level four! In which case don't advance to level four!

Abaos is coiled, his firm fingers on the ceiling clutching every second or so , as if in readiness to spring. He indeed is. Ozzy's odd wolf just finished maiming the wizard, and Abaos can sense the time to strike. The wizard is careening into the ceiling, and, as soon as he hits, Abaos is going to hit him. One of his hands nervously begins edging towards a starknife.....

....and then he's gone. In a flash of noxious purple smoke, the wounded wizard disappears. Quickly, Abaos flips about, expecting to once again find the wizard in another corner, another part of the room.... but he can't see him. He's gone.

He acrobatically rushes down to the floor. "Where is he!"" he hollers. "Where did he go? Ozzy, Awn, Guthruc? Can you sense him?"

His eyes narrow upon the newcomer, the supposed adventurer who offered her services as a mage. "Mage, if you want to prove yourself, you tell me where he is." As soon as he says this, he turns his back, knife still drawn, legs circling, spinning, as one might as if expecting an attack.

Slowly, tentatively, he works his way back to where Happs, Nugrah, Dharak, Sally's shoulder (who presumably is still wretching her guts out), he speaks to the systemically- upset woman. "Thank you for your service, today. Stay here, and get back to the camp when you can. Tell them what happened. Garess, and Sootscale, Townsend. If they live."

A thought suddenly crosses his mind, but he thinks of the immediate first.

"Nugrah, we set you free. Now, I ask for repayment. You've saved me; help everyone here, and we will be even. This I ask." The request is odd; not because of what he is asking, but because he's not even looking at the wizened old druid as he says it. Rather, with a quick nod to Happs, he looks Dharak straight in the face; he can tell the valiant half- orc has had more than his share of the fight.

Seeing to it that his men are safe, he checks back to Ozzy. "How goes it upstairs?" he asks softly.

Sorry this took so long, got sidetracked.

Patton looks over his unburned limbs. "Think I'll chill next to the healer," Patton says. "Townsend's up there fighting, if I turn tail and run I'll never hear the end of it."

Nugrah moves to cast cure light wounds on Dharak, but the half-orc ducks out of the way. "Save your juice for someone who needs it; I can walk, I'll walk back to camp and get Bokken to heal me. Figure I've done my piece for just now."

Nugrah doesn't argue, casting his spell on Happs Bydon instead.

cure light wounds: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11 Happs has four damage.

"Thanks," to hooded man mutters.

"I have one healing spell left," Nugrah declares. "Who needs it the worst? Or should I save it for later?" Y'all have that wand of infernal healing, might be time to break it out. All Nugrah's got left in him as far as positive energy goes is one casting of cure moderate wounds, which would probably be best used as an in-combat heal.

How it Goes Upstairs::

The fights been going on for a short while, now. Sharing senses with Mr. Winky, here's some interesting things that Ozzy notes.

Strength Check: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10
Strength Check: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27

Twelve seconds after being panicked by the mighty mite swarm, Auchs ripped a hole large enough to ride a horse through in the palisade and set off into the charred woodlands.

Having moved in through both the front door and the hole in the wall, horseback riders are maneuvering to the best of their abilities in the narrow confines. The kobolds have set up their phalanx formation, and are inexorably pressing their way forward. The kobold commandos are attacking targets of opportunity from stealth. The mites and their centipedes are swarming on the walls and walkways, with little leadership. Viceroy Dragonfly's giant dragonfly was shot out of the air by massed fire, and the viceroy is now on the ground fighting back to back with Chief Sootscale. Tatzy is not immediately visible, though a trail of six ruined bodies marks where she made her way inside the fortress. The giant whiptail centipede is dead. :(

Falgrim Sneeg is on top of the monastery flopping about like a dying fish and chugging a potion of cure light wounds, which does pretty much nothing to fix his ruined leg or sucking chest wounds.

You'd estimate causalities on both sides to be about ~twelvish. Most of the NPCs aren't stellar at damage dealing, and with the spellcaster otherwise occupied thus far, Auchs running around outside the walls, Tatzy doing whatever she's doing, Chief Sootscale currently unable to sneak attack, Akiros Ismort squaring off against the giant whiptail centipede; only Kressel and the cavaliars are hitting particularly heavily.

While Nugrah's healing people, thar be looting to do!

The familiar has, on it, a wand of infernal healing (50 charges) (never 'arore been used!), a scroll of Cure Serious Wounds (at CL 7), and a wand of silent image (3 charges).

The desk has on it Falgrim Sneeg's private notes and personal library (worth 150 gp), as well as the hefty rawhide-bound tome that is his spellbook. There's also the remnants of several basketball sized leathery soft shelled eggs, and one such egg that hasn't been split open or drained of it's fluids.

LV 3: Fly, Comunal Resist Energy, Haste, Summon Monster 3
LV 2: Acid Arrow, Web, Invisibility, Bear's Endurance

Ozzy hurriedly pulls out her wand of Infernal Healing and begins casting it on anyone who is still wounded, while filing them in on what's happening upstairs.

Jen, spellbook's all yours. You want to grab those magic items, too? We can sort them out later. Or we can just come back for them, as I doubt any of them will be particularly useful in this fight.

And why did Sneeg have a scroll of Cure Serious? I guess Nugrah could cast it if it's needed...

As soon as Mr. Winky sees Sneeg appear, he casts Magic Missile, trying to finish him off. With the headdress, he can auto-succeed on the UMD checks. Unless Sneeg has Dimensional Agility, Mr. Winky should be able to get the first missile in before he can pop a potion, in case the damage is enough to prevent that action...

Magic Missile: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4 Probably time for a few more of these before the party gets upstairs, assuming Sneeg doesn't die or disappear again (he must be close to his daily limit on that ability...)

Btw, where does the door at the top of the stairs spit us out?

On the Roof:
After the first magic missile Sneeg casts a spell that shrouds him in unpenatrable darkness (he's fond of that trick) (and then moves, so that his precise location isn't known). He's at 78 damage.

Figure if Nugrah's taking at least five rounds to heal everyone, there should be plenty of time for Falgrim and Winky to fight it out.

You’re a turn ahead of him, but the first magic missile doesn’t kill him.

If Mr. Winky spends a standard action studying the effect, he gets a save. Otherwise he needs to interact with it somehow. (Since Ozzy doesn’t know that this is an illusion, rather than some spell or supernatural ability that mucks up darkvision, there’s not much she can tell Winky to give him a bonus on the save. Not, as you noted, that it matters.)

I’ll operate on the assumption that Winky spent his standard action in such a manner.

Sneeg spends his standard action concentrating on his spell, and his move action flying sixty feet away from Mr. Winky, using the illusionary darkness to obstruct line of sight. (Pointlessly, but he doesn’t know that.)

Just so we're thinking about the same series of events...

Sneeg arrives. His turn is over, because the Shift ability is based on Dimension Door, which does not allow actions after teleportation without the Dimensional Agility feat (if Sneeg DOES have dimensional agility, that might change this sequence of events).
Mr. Winky casts Magic Missile, doing 4 damage.
Sneeg pulls out a potion and drinks it.
Mr. Winky casts Magic Missile again, doing 3 damage.
Sneeg casts what I'm fairly certain is Silent Image.
Mr. Winky uses a standard action to examine the illusion, succeeds on his Will save, and disbelieves.
Sneeg flies 60ft away, continuing to using the illusion to conceal himself (ineffectively in Mr. Winky's case, but he doesn't know that).

Now, we may have a problem here, because when you cast Silent image, you specify a number of 10-foot cubes and create an illusion that must be entirely within them. Though I often wish it were possible, I have never seen an interpretation of this spell that allows those cubes to move. You can move/change the illusions within them as long as you're concentrating, but they can't leave the original area of effect.

Now, my best estimate is that Sneeg is level 8, which would give him 12 10ft cubes work with. IF he cast it intending to cover this escape, and so he arranged those squares all in a line, that's more than enough space for 60ft of flight, but he would have to have to make that choice when he cast the spell, and he can't move another 60ft in the same direction, nor than he make a change in direction that he didn't plan when casting the spell, without leaving the illusion.

60ft is faster than Mr. Winky's fly speed, but CL1 Magic Missile has a range of 110ft, so he can chase for several rounds before Sneeg can get out of range (and that fly spell may not have long enough left on it for that). Also, Mr. Winky can take a run action with his flight, but Sneeg can't because the spell specifies that you can't.

Are we in agreement so far?

Of course, Mr. Winky doesn't know any of this stuff about squares or lines, or even about the fact that he can take a run action with his flight while Sneeg can't, so all of this likely won't affect his action this round...

Mr. Winky, who now looking more like a flapping wisp of shadow-stuff against the black night sky, sends another ball of magical force to unerringly strike Sneeg, then flies 30ft in the direction he's moving to keep him from getting out of range.

Missile: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

In fact, Mr. Winky will continue to pursue, skipping an attack to take a run action if necessary to keep up. If Sneeg just keeps running, he'll eventually run him down, so I'll roll some more of these now. If Sneeg doesn't do anything to force a change in tactics before these wear him down, you can just fast-forward that.

Missile: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Missile: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Missile: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Missile: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

The End of Falgrim Sneeg:
My bad for unclear narration!

Sneeg wasn’t in the darkness, he was keeping it between him and Winky.

Mr. Winky follows after the wizard, launching a mystic bolt from his wand, and then another. At this point Falgrim goes into a dive that he doesn’t come out of. The wizard’s broken body hits the ground and rolls, before coming to a stop with limbs and neck bent in a manner that neither limbs nor neck were ever meant to be bent.

And that’s the end of that!

Funny thing? It was entirely unnecessary. X) Ralmog carried the heavy-duty healing; Sneeg had less than eight minutes left before his bear’s endurance ran out and his injuries caught up to him. You guys killed him down in the basement, y’all just didn’t know it yet.

The mental message comes in as the group is getting ready to ascend the stairs. Yes! Ozzy exclaims, for no apparent reason, then turns to her companions. Sneeg's dead, she explains, Mr. Winky found him and finished him off. The last is said with more than a little of smugness (but in a cute way).

Mr. Blinky's perception modifier is only a +5.

Mr. Winky's perception modifier is a +14. He's a really skill-focussed character, though. His only real combat option is his +17 UMD modifier (currently a +20, because he's wearing a shared magic item that boosts CHA-based skills). His main duty is acting as our party's scout, with a +19 stealth modifier and (as of level 4) constant concealment.

I don't like complete min-maxing though. Ozzy has several skills with only one or two ranks. Most of them require putting in a rank at least every other level to remain relevant, of course, and more if you want to be "good" at something. That's just the way the game is built.

Meant Winky. -_- fml

I meant only to point out that a +12 isn’t considered munchkinny at level four, and is, in fact, rather par the course for a wizard or arcanist’s knowledge and spell craft.

Female Tiefling Arcanist/4 -> Woah! Fancy stat numbers!

Jen turns the egg back and forth under the dim torchlight of the room. It's a good bit larger than a fowl's egg and, though even her weak arms could hold it up for hours, has a decent amount of heft to it, too. She contemplates where she can keep it in the ensuing battle, as it would certainly interfere with her spellcasting and it seems as if it would push the constraints of her pockets...

And then, because Jen is something of a long-term thinker, she considers the uses and issues presented if and when the egg hatches...

Is any of this info covered by the knowledge check she made?

Turning to Iorskan, who, she realizes, she's had the most friendly conversations with out of the party members so far, she asks,

draconic:

Spoiler:
"What's your opinion on wyverns?"

He seems like one of the prouder dragons, one of the ones who fancies themselves a mighty lord... He probably looks down on them, Jen predicts.

Wait, wasn't Tatzy's nest attacked by the Manticore? This is probably one of her(?) eggs.

Edit: ""They took my eggs and my shinies and my snacks," the wyvern lists, in order of importance." https://paizo.com/campaigns/DMScholarsKingmaker/gameplay&page=15#745. Totally forgot about that.

Ozzy would totally say something about the egg belonging to a friend of theirs, but she doesn't speak draconic. Also, she doesn't know the difference between a wyvern and a true dragon.

if that's the case, we probably want the person carrying it to be a party member tatzy would recognise as friendly.

EDIT:
Confident of his newfound skills in draconic, guthruc understands Jen's request and replies in common, another recently learned language. like dragon? Guthruc friends allies with big dragon, no just Isnrokagn and guthruc's first attempt at speaking a party members name!

Of just leave it here where it's safe until the fight is over, or have Dharak take it with him to safety and tell Tatzy about it after the fight.

Abaos puts a hand towards Iorskan, stopping him, and signals the two kobolds, and the rest of the bandits. He talks quickly.

"Ok, it's safe to assume our presence here is felt. Thanks to Ozzy's reports, we know that Akiros is already engaged in the battle. So we go in hot, guns blazing. Remember, we're here to kill the Stag Lord, just the stag Lord. If we can get him, we'll get everyone else to surrender. Sound fair? Heavies to the front, everyone else to the back. Let's go!"

With a cheer, he lets everyone rush past, upstairs, clapping Iorskan as he goes.

Guthruc leads the charge up the stairs with newfound strength and bloodlust in his eyes. Time to kill the stag lord!

Chief Sootscale had been wrong about Viceroy Dragonfly.

A massive human with long hair charged down the stairs at the viceroy, swinging it's sword with a two-handed grip. Sootscale ducked under it's guard, kneecapping it with his mace and gutting it with his spear. In so doing, he left himself vulnerable; the mite covered for the kobold, deflecting an attack of his shield and into the ground. The small blue creature was screaming unintelligibly.

The two of them stood back to back, blocking the stairs leading to the catwalks and rooftops overhead, battling humans on two fronts. The archers on the roof had broken the kobold's phalanx, killed those who couldn't get inside to shelter fast enough.

The mite was screaming something Sootscale couldn't understand. He began maneuvering his way out of the doorframe, and the chief understood, swapping positions, giving the viceroy a moment to catch his breath under slightly less fire. Even without a common language, Chief Sootscale felt that he understood the fey. Both of them were leaders, yes? Both of them felt the weight of command, both of them were strong by necessity, by expectation.

Cheif Sootscale had been wrong about Viceroy Dragonfly. Perhaps kobolds and mites weren't so different.

Undercommon:
(unprintable profanity on the topic of what happens to people who kill dragonflies, and on the many failings of kobolds)

Guthruc throws open the trapdoor out of the basement to find himself in the middle of what appears to be a full-scale rout; everyone and their mother is trying to make their way up the stairs to avoid the kobold phalanx pressing inexorably inward, and the wyvern that is somewhere in the building with them. Unfortunately for them, the stairs were blocked at some point by the mite Kressel shot out of the sky, and by a scarily competent kobold assassin who's already killed two people in front of them.

Party is up!

After Guthruc goes up, I suggest the rest of us wait for Iorskan go up and breath some flames before we follow. Don't want anyone getting hit by friendly fire :P
