With Kilian's rope Valeros easily descends to the bottom of the chasm and finds it free of danger.

With a rope the DC is 5 to climb down. Only those with a climb penalty need to roll, and they only fall if the roll an adjusted 0. Lowering Kalkamedes requires a DC 10 strength check, with one key roller who can be aided by others.

Seems to me everyone is pretty much ready.

Kalkamedes bonds are untied and he pushes himself to his feet again. However, instead of looking for something in the chasm, he crosses to the far side and starts trying to climb the far wall.

"Oh, for the love of--somebody hold him down while I get out of this. Unless either of you--" He nods to Peri and Pai. "--can magic yourselves up there?" If they can't, Kilian unhooks and doffs his breastplate before trying to free-climb up the side with Haris' grapnel and rope.


The sides of the chasm are pretty sheer, and since they are 100' up, getting a grappling hook up there might be tricky. Without a rope the climb DC for the far side is DC 22.

"Make sure the line is secure before you go up." She warns Kilian, "This isn't something he's used to doing. It's good to see him so useful. I'm sure you all agree."

Meanwhile, the rope is set and secured.

5 DC 5 climb checks for Peri again to scale the cliff. Everyone else can make it without danger. Pulling up Kalkamedes will require a DC 15 strength check (it's harder than lowering him).

Once everyone's up, we'll let him go again. "How far have we come?"


Peri nearly slips at one point, but fate saves her in the form of a lucky foothold. Valeros hauls Kalkamedes to the top with little trouble, and eventually the rest of the group makes the ascent as well. Untying him again, he immediately walks off. The estimate is that your group has traveled maybe 6 miles from Kalkamedes' cabin.

A short time later...

Great bands of stars sweep across the cloudless night sky, illuminating a series of game trails that chase through the mountain shrubs and berry bushes. Suddenly Morrey returns, squawking at Rowanna.

"Mistress, I have seen three bears along the path ahead. One large, two small."

Im less ignoring your point as saying out of character that it kind of defeats the point of me going (to distract any angry bears and Exp Retreat away if needed and track the party if others are going). At the same time though, I didnt want to hog the spotlight too much. So its up to you guys what you want to do. We dont even know that the bears will attack us. They are animals not monsters.

I hadn't inferred that "I can move quickly when needed" meant that Garinol had Exp Retreat; that makes a solo sortie much more reasonable (unless Peri also has the spell).
