Roused by the Brother's wake up call, the Mariner bolts upright, grabbing the longsword like a club looking around wide-eyed, "What's going on?! Undead?! Rats?! -Cats?!"

Cats slowly collects himself, trying to regain his cool after the attack and the sudden reemergence of memories he hoped were not true. Though he cannot recall the bad thing he did...he knows, deep inside, that it is true.

Cats shakes his head.

"Are you sure you didn't see what did this? It was a man. A man in rags. I think they were yellow...but none of you saw him? He knew things!" He looks from face to face, hoping for one look of recognition.

"OH OH i remember a dream i had a few days ago it said beware the yellow walker or something like that. You should proolly stay away from him"

The Twin looks about for any sign of trouble, but finds nothing out of the ordinary.

Brother Butterfly ponders Cats words, but if the phrase has significance or a "source" he can't fathom it.

When Cats begins talking about the subject of his night terrors, the "man in rags", Denman makes some urgent whispers to York, who finally allows the young man to tell his tale.

"Many believe that the Tatterman is just a local ghost story. Some say he was a patient that tried to escape in a storm and was dashed upon the rocks of the island. Others say he is a servant of the Briarstone Witch. His name has carried on and spread through the patients like an illness. Some claim to have seen or felt his presence. I saw him, and not just in nightmares, but for real." Denman wipes at sweat heading on his brow with a trembling hand.

"The night before the riots, I was up in my room when I heard something. Like someone dragging something outside my door. I rose from bed and cracked it open to look out and that's when I saw Him at the end of the hall, half-hidden in mists. He was clothed in torn and tattered yellow rags with one covering his eyes, like a bandage for the blind. His hands were like claws."

"It turned to look my way, and I quickly closed the door and locked it, then hid under my bed until morning."

Does it look like Denman is lying or keeping anything from us? Omitting a portion of the story?

York, Do you have anything you want to add to stories you've heard about the Tatterman? Or maybe you know the story of the Briarstone Witch? If this THING was a servant - it's a good idea to know what the Witch stood for or had a purpose for.

"I'm no historian." York replies. "I doubt I could tell more then anyone else about the witch. She's a local legend from the early days of Thrushmoor. Some say she was responsible for the Thrushmoor Vanishing."

"It is said that none survived the Thrushmoor Vanishing." Loic, who had been listening from the back of the group, adds his storyteller voice to the tale. As those nearby turn toward him he hugs the viol the Watchmen gave to him close. "Around 700 years ago all the residents of the Thrushmoor disappeared. None can say what one day caused every living thing in town to simply vanish. In the centuries since, those who resettled the land have seen much and learned to be suspicious. An evil haunts the tales and memory of Thrushmoor, and the people know it as the Briarstone Witch."

"Though none can claim to have actually seen the Witch since the Vanishing, the reputation for evil persisted in these parts. About a century ago the church of Pharasma was called upon to perform an exorcism upon Briarstone Isle — the source of so many strange tales. Afterwards, the local lord vociferously declared the island cleansed of evil, and soon after that the construction of Briarstone Asylum was begun on the foundations of an old, half-built fort that once existed here."

We have shapeshifters out there, we have shapeshifters in here, Glowing eyed rats, ratmen who command the rats and a damned crying Walleye. We have no room for witches... " His hands visibly shake from some sort of fragmented memory in his mind. He doesn't feel scared but yet something is making him shake.

"They build this place on some sort of burial ground or pet cemetery for rats?" Fearless leaps to his feet and realizes he is still a bit injured. he walks over to Lady Winter. "Think you might be able to spare a bit to stitch us up before we head out there again?"

Taking in all the stories and storing the information in his adroit mind. He smiles as he now feels he has more information about The Tatterman. Nothing useful - except maybe the creature is physical and can ultimately be killed by his bezerking piked seaman.

What he needed now was to get more information on another topic.
York, You might not be an expert on "ghost stories" , but you are an expert on Zandalus. It is mentioned that Zandalus was a gifted painter and his paintings were sold to finance his treatment and stay here. What were some of those paintings of? Topics? Creatures?
If you are not an expert, are any survivors a good source of information?

Looking to the rest of the {Strange} Watchmen,
We'd better get prepared and start another foray into the Asylum. I noticed the food getting low, we need to venture to the kitchens.
I need to do some prayers and drawing a picture, but I am ready when the others are.

GM I'd like to make three drawings. One of the girl in last night's dream and place that on the Shrine to Desna. I'd also like to try another painting of The Tatterman and Zandalus.

When talk turns to venturing back into the asylum, Lady Winter makes sure everyone in your group is at full health.

As she tends to your wounds Brother Butterfly finds some real art supplies scavenged by the survivors - paint, brushes, and canvas. Though he has had little practice, his artistic skills have improved quite a bit since his first attempt to render a likeness of the creature that haunted his dreams.

I have created a slide in the maps link with Butterfly's art.

York offers what he can about Zandalus.

"I can't say much about Zandalus' early life, or what events brought him to Briarstone. I've been here fifteen years and he was a patient long before I arrived. I think he even predates Doctor Losandro, who has been at the asylum almost three decades. He suffered from horrible nightmares, but was otherwise a quiet man - a poet and artist. He never talked in all the time I have been here, though I hear he's got plenty to say now. He spent a lot of time painting. Swirling skies, desolate ruins, vast cities, and other strange and disturbing things. Things normal folk would never pay gold for, but then Ustalav isn't known for normal folk. Over the years he's had wealthy patrons willing to buy his art, and it's made enough to pay for special privileges at Briarstone. He always seemed peaceful enough himself, but he's changed now."

"From what we've heard Zandalus led an uprising. It wasn’t like any riot I’ve ever seen here before, though. It was more like a religious movement. Most of the northern halls are now held by robed patients who call themselves Apostles in Orpiment and are fanatically devoted to Zandalus."

The Mariner looks over Brother's shoulders at the sketches, nods at the pictures of Zandalus. "Yea, that guy, the guy that sees, hears and now talks.", he jabs a dirty blood crusted finger at the parchment a few times. "Let's go find him,...drag him outside and beat the taste out of him" He nudges Brother for agreement, crazy look in his lazy eye.

"You think maybe we should have asked for more vials of acid in case so many rats regroup again?" Fearless lets out a worried smile.

I'm sorry Cats, but what part of "Zandalus Lead a Uprising" didn't you understand? I am telling you I saw him before and he's a guy you can't trust. I'm with Mariner and completely plan on grabbing him, taking him outside and beating him like a rug on a clothesline.

Cats and Fearless, don't you want to check out the library to see if there's anything useful? You guys can do that, While I try to see what's on the otherside of this door.

Cast luck on Cats and cast luck on Fearless for their search. He then goes and uses Doorsight on the room behind the double-doors.

"Your mom cats the library," Cats says grumpily as Brother Butterfly dismisses his hopeful encounter with Zandalus.

Nonetheless, Cats does go to explore the library, looking for things the rats might have horded or might be useful. He readies his bow as he enters, expecting to see more ratlings again.

As Brother Butterfly prepares to see beyond the northern doors, the rest of the Watchmen are given time to look around.

Briarstone’s library boasts an impressive collection of texts covering advanced psychological theories and treatments, common medical practices, and matters of regional record. Although most bear a stamp with the Briarstone seal, some bear an obviously foreign stamp. Given time, almost any matter relating to medicine, psychology, and Briarstone or Versex history can be researched here.

Knowledge Local check available here.

Some of the books and the backs of the nearby shelves have been gnawed through. Looking into the low, darkened shelves reveals narrow tunnels (only passable by Tiny creatures) bored through the wood and stone beneath. Cats notices that one of these tunnels is particularly well used and breaks through the north wall to the right of the doors.

Squeezing through the tunnel Fearless pokes his head out from behind a cabinet of medical supplies and looks into the asylum's infirmary. The earthquake has left the room in shambles and created a sizable crack that split the asylum’s foundation's near the northern wall. Beds for sick or injured patients stand in a row along the western wall, and a messy desk sits against the east, next to a door. In the center of the room is a large bloodstained operating table. Secured to a ring bolted to the sturdy wood is a length of chain, a bloody manacle dangling from the table at its end.

A faint scratching sound can be heard in the room.

The Mariner flails about with his polearm, but isn't able to hit any rats. The Twin has no better luck with his dagger, but his Serpent manages to snatch a few and crush them in its jaws.

One group of rats swarms around the door, biting at the Mariner. A second group splits off and chases Brother Butterfly and the Twin's Serpent into the library.

Swarm Damage on Mariner: 1d6 ⇒ 6 And Fort save vs DC 12 or suffer distraction.

The mace is blunt damage which seems to do well against the rate swarms

Seeing that the swarm of rats are once again attracted to him, he swings his mace back and forth and back and forth. The first pass through the tangled mass of fangs and tails seems to catch a bulk of rats, but the heave of the mace stops as BB cocks back with his arm and bludgeons some books on the bookshelves instead of rats. He moves back a bit to try and get away from the swarm.

Watchmen! Fall back and get to open areas inside the library. If we spread out and fight them in here, we have the advantage. Desna can also heal those that are wounded if we are all in the same room.
