Lirianne loads her pistol again and walks over to Ezrek's side as he examines the door. "Warnings of what, I wonder..."
Lirianne readies to attack any hostile creatures that may emerge from the door.

Disable: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (19) + 18 = 37
For the record, you can take 10 on disabling traps. The immediate threat means in combat and the like. (i.e. outside influence) Taking 10 here represents taking your time, going slow and steady so as to to not set off the trap. This has been discussed and rehashed numerous times on the boards.

Alright, we always play that you cannot take 10 on disable device
The Mutani Manual of Martial Mastery, located in the hidden compartment beneath the trapdoor, is 14 inches tall, 10 inches wide, and 4 inches thick, bound in red-tinted leather, and features an embossed pair of nunchaku on the cover. The book’s contents are written in an archaic dialect of Tien script.
Missing: double doors, and kitchen

Can I try to read a bit of the book, making sure it's actually what we need. Also, Detect Magic on it, just in case.

Does knowing Tian help? I still fail on a Nat 20.
Linguistics: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
Anyone else actually have linguistics?

We have the book, but were we supposed to look for that scholar fellow that was kidnapped as well?
Zantir casts Heroism and Featherstep on himself again.

We missed those two single doors off the dining room on our first pass. Let's go check them out.

DM PeteZero |

Checking one room doesn't reveal anything of interest.
The kitchen though seems a bit more interesting: A quick perusal of this space reveals it to be an elaborate kitchen outfitted for the preparation of sumptuous gourmet meals. Stone countertops and oak cupboards line the walls, and three iron stoves run down the center
of the room. The place is thoroughly stocked with pots and pans, cutlery of the finest quality, and implements whose purpose can only be guessed at by those without vast culinary experience. Various barrels, jars, and other containers around the expansive workspace hold foodstuffs, though not in great abundance.
A large trap door can be found in the southeast corner of the kitchen.

Points to the trap door, Like this. We could have missed this. Who wants to open it?

DM PeteZero |

Ezrek finds a trap and disables it.
Blindfolded and gagged, bound to a chair you find Hamidio Besai, clad in a fine silk kimono of a decidedly feminine cut, patterned with lilies. The scholar is a dyspeptic man devoid of patience, whose bald pate is fringed with disheveled brown hair. He is slight of build, and sports an odd mustache. He is naked but for the kimono.
Ooc: some stuff you found in the safe could fit him

Can't take 20 on Linguistics because there is an effect for a failure of a certain amount. But if I can' read it, then I'm thinking it's not actually Tian, and there is no "Ancient Tian", only Osirion and Thassalonian, I believe. So red flags kind of going up on that one. I don't think it's the real deal.

"I believe I did see your possessions in a safe across the courtard Mr Besai. If they're important, I can fetch them while you check over the book"
Assuming there is enough time, Lirianne will head back to the safe, fetch the scholar's possessions and return to the group.

Excellent! Let's be on our way then. I wonder if we get a commendation for being the lucky ones.

Chai Kai places 'The Lost Fifth' securely in his backpack if Ezrek hasn't done so already.
Speaking Tian to Hamidio Besai: "If you do not mind, Master*, while you verify that the book is what it appears to be, your humble servant wishes to verify the same about you..." (Specifically, he wishes to hold on to him while he has the book in his possession, ideally with one hand on Hamidio Besai's shoulder and the other on his warhammer.)
*Or whatever the proper polite term for him would be
