Thanks for the warm wishes.
I have arrived in Iowa, it was mostly alright, although finding good food in the middle of the country can be challenging and the 660+ miles on the last day was no joke either.

I must be out of practice building characters: I forgot about favored classes bonuses AND that humans get skill points in addition to feats.

If I'd realized that before I probably would have kept Int at 14 and had less anemic physical scores. But that's probably better, anyway, gives Lucius a bit more uniqueness.

I added a skill point and a hit point.

Hi all!

I have 2 people who dropped from my Reign of Winter game. We are currently about halfway through book 1 - The Snows of Summer.

Replacement recruiting thread here.

Feel free to enter if you wish!

Already playing RoW, thank you though.

Very tempted, but I think I've reached my limits (plus am running RoW).

The RoW game I am playing has slowed but is still going and I really love the party dynamic. You can see her here and let me know if you would even be interested in her. That would probably be the first step for me.

I spent around twenty hours making her and each time she speaks usually takes me twenty minutes to write unless she's feeling really wordy, in which case it takes longer. My post introducing the party to the noble in part 1 took two hours to write as I worked in part of every players character history.

The game I'm in has slowed but not stopped. Both the DM and the other players are phenomenal, but some players seem to post once a week or so. I'll try to get a feel for where its going and enter as one of these two or the third you've mentioned.

She is a fey (reskinned aasimar) princess from the Grungir forest. A paladin with a custom Oath, she is my attempt to make a Lawful Good character "Inspiring" instead of "Militant". She speaks only in rhyming couplets which is why her posts take me so long to write. Her back story is written in skaldic verse but I've provided translations for others like me who don't have a PhD in Beowulf.

Paladins can be tough in some groups and she in requires a lot of roleplaying in addition.

The Hagcursed Doom

South to the forest he rode,
to Grungir and the never-dark,
the raptor’s battle-dew, Sveinn,
to lay blood-seed in fertile fields.
beneath the ship of night anew,
the light-alf queen wandered shield-bereft,
so the ring-giver his gift bestowed,
on winter’s blanket cold.

Spoiler:
Hilde’s father is Sveinn Blood-Eagle, King of the Thanelands. Sveinn, wishing to retire to Avalon, has many children, each challenged to slay a linnorm and prove their wisdom to succeed his throne.

Hilde’s mother is a fey noble of the Grungir Forest whom Sveinn caught without her guards. They lie together under the new moon on a bed of snow and this is where Hilde was conceived. Hilde is therefore known as The Fey-Touched.

To the court of never-dark
a thread-render appeared anew,
the raptor’s-seed that very morn,
her maiden’s-blood now introduced.
No bed-shame would she bear,
nor straw-death for her road to Hel,
no children of battle need she fear,
the shield of hags the ravens feed.

Spoiler:
A norn appeared before the Court of Twilight on the day when Hilde first hit puberty, and foretold her future. She would not die in bed or from disease, but rather, in battle with a servant of the Irissen hags. No one in the Land of the Linnorm Kings is willing to do her harm lest it be implied that they are hag-sworn.

A virgin-blade, bow-lady fair,
with words of golden-waves we raise,
ever dry her noble-vault, despite
no bright-way every taken.
The Inheritor’s way she duly treads,
yet Forseti’s favored she truly be,
a river-bone in the weather of weapons,
cat-mannered in times of peace.

Spoiler:
The speaker is toasting Hilda, comparing her to a blade-maiden or Valkyrie. He points out that she has no fear despite never going on raids, an accusation some have made. Instead, she treasures Justice, often through diplomacy but is ready to fight for it. She is a rock during battle, but during times of peace, she has a great deal of curiosity, which she may take to extremes.

While she shall ride with hounds,
no were-gild will she ever pay,
through metal runs slaughter’s dew,
in tracks of steel she follows.
Her mother’s-kin of never-dark,
their lessons all well taught,
the snow-claws sense of safety,
a southrons sense of rage.

Spoiler:
The speaker points out that as a paladin, Hilde will track evil to the ends of golarion but is often more merciful than your typical holy warrior. Despite being a paladin, she is very stubborn and refuses to change her ways. The speaker then chides her for her curiosity which encourages her risky behavior and her lack of anger in response to insult, blaming this behavior on being raised in the fey Court of Twilight.

By changer-orb’s light,
liosalfar shines faerie-fire,
her crown of floss heaven’s-candle,
her war-mask ship-of-night silver.
Stone-cliffs the duty-of-squires,
with norn-gift as winter’s-spear,
the feast of crows draws nigh
upon tinder, blood-flames leap.

Spoiler:
The speaker claims that Hilde glows, especially in the light of the full moon. Her hair is gold as the sun, her armor shines silver as the moon. Before battle she is solid, thinking, similar to an icicle, yet once battle starts, she leaps forward suddenly, bursting into action.

When weather turns to weapons
the never dark daughter
bears her name upon her lance
as the bough does gird the tree.
In time the acorn dost fall,
atop winter’s-bed, the toast of ravens,
a bed in summer spun thrice,
before sky’s black cloak donned.

Spoiler:
When riding into battle, Hilde carries a green pennon on her lance that clearly shows her heritage as the daughter of the fey queen. Her mother gave it to her when she left for her father’s world. The pennon seems spun from the living essence of summer, back in the First Kingdom.

I had a couple quick questions about Ravana's shifting.

I thought the animal shaman archetype didn't get the shifting powers until 2nd level, also it seems to only last a total of 1 min/level a day.

My apologizes if I'm missing something.

Just checked meself...yep it looks like level 2 is when you get that ability for 2 mins/day (ouch...per day.)

You are right! How hugely disappointing. Not only do I need to find a weapon now, but I will probably have to use that weapon until fourth or fifth level, right when a weapon becomes preferable to the stats on the horns.

I will rethink what to do on my turn. I had plenty of money left over, would you mind if I retroactively brought a weapon with me DM Pendin Fust?

I certainly don't mind using an improvised weapon until we get out of her, but I'm afraid I'm going to suck.

Meh, and I thought it was going to be so cool not using a weapon.

WotR - A | Drezen | WotR - B | Righteous Medals

It can still be cool, just not till 2nd level :)

Yes I am fine with retroactively having a weapon with you.

I would much rather have the rain now. While I've used this ability, I've yet to benefit from it. I feel like I'm still in the "No harm / No foul" range of mistakes.

I prefer that to benefiting from something for a long time and finding I am wrong.

Nebbin wouldn't say anything, but have we been traveling that long? Just wondering if our characters would really be resting, even if we've expending some of our resources -- we've got potions to deal with hp loss.

(Then again, if Anevia/Gwerm/Aravashnial need rest, that could be a reason to stop.)

On another note, I'll probably be AFK for most of Sunday and Monday...

RPG Superstar 2008 Top 32

That's a good point. Lucius was looking at it as a place to come back and camp if they can't find a way out.

Stopping to rest at this point is lunch, not camping.

WotR - A | Drezen | WotR - B | Righteous Medals

Most definitely this would be lunch as far as time of travelling goes. But...you've all been through some pretty traumatic events.

For myself I was considering the fact that earlier in the day we barely survived a demonic invasion of Kenabres and witnessed the death of a dragon :) Saoirse is also considering the more crippled members of our party, but that's why she framed it like a question. It's not really a "meta" consideration of resources, but more a question of what the rest of the party wants to do. We could just clean the room and move on if everyone wants to do that too.

I have midterms all next week. All of my tests in medical school are do or die. I will post as much as I can during breaks over the weekend and next week. If I have not posted something and you would like to move the game on, please take any reasonable action for my character.

I apologize for this, but I have to get past these tests or $200,000 and five years goes down the drain. I will be back to regular posting next Saturday.

Two tests down.

I did very well on the first one, probably made a B.

The second one was a disaster and I didn't finish. On the other hand, everyone is screaming blood murder about it on the student forums and the class average for the term last term was 68, so there is precedent that Pathophysiology has been curved. I'm not counting on a curve however as that gives them the opportunity to decide how many people to fail.

I'm now studying for Clinical Medicine Wed and Pharmacology Friday.

My GF is still struggling with the MCATs -- which IMO seem to be about things that should have nothing to do with medicine and/or things you should learn IN med school.

RPG Superstar 2008 Top 32

That's why so many places offer 'Pre-med biology' as a major. Basically a four year degree in passing the MCAT. (Likewise for pre-law and the LSAT).

I'll mention it to her. She's definitely got lots of medical experience -- has spent nearly a decade working with a woman's health organization. From what I understand, it's really just the MCAT scores keeping her out of schools. : (

Ross, I think that may have been true in an earlier edition of D&D.

PRD wrote:
Flat-Footed: At the start of a battle, before you have had a chance to act (specifically, before your first regular turn in the initiative order), you are flat-footed. You can't use your Dexterity bonus to AC (if any) while flat-footed. Barbarians and rogues of high enough level have the uncanny dodge extraordinary ability, which means that they cannot be caught flat-footed. Characters with uncanny dodge retain their Dexterity bonus to their AC and can make attacks of opportunity before they have acted in the first round of combat. A flat-footed character can't make attacks of opportunity, unless he has the Combat Reflexes feat.

I think now in PF that it doesn't take away your speaking abilities.
