I know there is a lot of text, but please read it all

You arrived in Kaer Maga yesterday evening and after spending the last of your money for a night at an inn, this morning you decided to walk around this strange town before looking for work. Passing by the Temple in the Downmarket area, you see a crowd of people gathering near the front, and you push your way forward into the crowd. What a sight, a troll, dressed in bloody clothes that looks like they have been slit open across the stomach multiple times is holding on to her entrails and screaming aloud. This must be one of the Augurs, a group of troll prophets you have heard about. As you move forward near the front of the crowd, she stares at several of you in turn, a maddened look on her face, and yells, ”Death from Beyond! Holver's Ferry is where the apocalyptic ruin of the world will begin. Strange beings! Sickness, disease, madness. Holver's Ferry will doom us all!” With her prophetic utterance finished she sits down, the strange look on her face passing as she stuffs her entrails back into her body and the wounds start to heal. She ignores the stares and questions from all, as she heads into the Temple. When she leaves and the crowd disperses, you see four others, besides yourself, still standing there looking around.

  • Please provide the following information in your request to join:
A complete character sheet for a first level character, including description, personality, history, look ahead and the reason you are “accepting” the prophetic call to go to Holver's Ferry. No need for an alias yet. Only selected characters will be required to set one up.

  • This PbP will be based on Legendary Games Legendary Planet AP, a Sword and Planet adventure. Think of the 2012 movie “John Carter of Mars” or better yet the Barsoom series of books by Edgar Rice Burroughs which the movie is based on. There are 8 adventures, a Prequel (Chapter 0) and 7 Chapters, taking the characters from Level 1 to Level 20. The Prequel will be set in the world of Golarion (aka Paizo default setting).

  • Recruitment ends on Thursday, March 17th. Five characters will be selected and announced Saturday, March 19th. Play will begin on Tuesday, March 22nd.

    Character Creation Guidelines

  • 20 point character buy. All scores 10 or greater after racial adjustments.
  • Allowed sources:
    Paizo:
    CRB - Core Rulebook
    APG – Advanced Player Guide
    Drop Dead Studios:
    SoP – Spheres of Power
SoP:EO – Spheres of Power: Expanded Options
  • Races allowed: Core Rule Book only.
  • Classes allowed: All from the above books, except NO cavaliers. Anyone with an animal companion or familiar will not have it during the first two-thirds of Chapter 1 and you will have to obtain a new one later in that chapter.
  • One Basic, Race, Regional or Religion trait from the APG, ask first (no Adopted, nor Rich Parents, nor some others). You will be able to select a Campaign trait from the Players Guide for this AP during Chapter 1, ie. after the Prequel.
  • Average gold for 1st level. Spend it all, no left over cash, gems or jewelry. No need to buy equipment when applying, this can be done after the group is chosen.
  • Maximum hit points all levels.
  • Alignment. LG, NG preferred. CG, LN, TN, CN acceptable. NO Evil.
  • A five person party will be selected. Minimum one from each of the following groups: Warrior, Divine, Arcane, Skill
  • Excepts from the Legendary Planets Players Guide:
    1. Character Focus: The environment and situations the PCs will encounter will likely change many times over the course of the interplanetary storyline. So, focusing intensely on a single aspect or creating a “one trick pony” with an affinity for a single terrain or culture may not work as well as focusing on a character’s versatility and adaptability.
    2. Skills: These adventures necessitate that characters overcome both the physical and mental challenges imposed by entirely new worlds, technologies, and adversaries. Thus, spending skill ranks on skills which aid in exploration, such as Climb, Perception, Survival, and Swim, will provide ample opportunities for a PC to shine. Similarly, social skills will prove an absolute must in interacting with other cultures—either by placating them, winning them over to the PCs’ cause, or perhaps just aggravating and stymieing them on the battlefield in order to impress or inspire potential allies. Knowledge skills involving arcana, dungeoneering, engineering, and even geography will provide important, relevant information regardless of where these adventures take the PCs. And, in some cases, they may prove vital in solving various mysteries and opposing certain enemies. Also, as you will be traveling to alien places with different “common” tongues, it behooves you that one or more party members invest in Linguistics.
  • At the beginning of Chapter 1 ”To Worlds Unknown” the PCs have the possibility to “change their characters race”, here are the new playable races, with a picture and a little information regarding them. Choosing a new race would be via player / DM agreement, not a DM nor a player dictate. If you would be interested in this, let me know in your application. I will only allow one or two PCs to change race.
  • Midway thru Chapter 1 you gain a Mythic Tier. The feat is predetermined. As only the Prequel (Chapter 0) and Chapter 1 are out now, I do not know how many more Mythic Tiers that you get.

    PbP rules

  • Posting: Weekday – at least once per day, more if you can do it. Weekend – at least once.
  • To speed up play, I will usually roll perception, survival, initiative, and other group and individual rolls as appropriate / needed.
  • Please provide your timezone in GMT. I am in upstate New York, USA, GMT -5.

I have a buddy who is invited to participate in this campaign. He will be bringing in a Ranger. That leaves another warrior, divine (melee), arcane (preferably SoP, but CRB/APG are ok) and a skill character.

Adventure titles, author, levels, brief summary of each:

The Assimilation Strain by Tom Phillips and Neil Spicer – a prelude adventure to introduce 1st-level characters on any fantasy world to a broader universe of insidious alien invaders.

To Worlds Unknown by Jim Groves – An adventure for 2nd to 5th level characters, featuring a breakout from an interplanetary prison and the exploration of a crime-infested hub world that could provide a gateway home, or draw the heroes deeper into a web of alien conspiracies and cryptic alliances.

The Scavenged Codex by Mike Shel – An adventure for 5th to 8th level characters across a post-apocalyptic desert planet in search of the forgotten lore of near-mythical creator races, now jealously guarded by corrupt cultists of the wastes.

Dead Vault Descent by Matt Goodall – An adventure for 8th to 11th level characters venturing forth to the blasted surface of a tidally locked world, half scorched by eternal sunshine and half frozen by endless darkness. The heroes must brave the primitive swamps of the habitable zone and penetrate the vast catacombs beneath in search of the keepers of hope to unlocking the mysteries of the ancients.

Confederates of the Shattered Zone by Richard Pett – An adventure for 11th to 14th level characters exploring the post-industrial ruins of an asteroid field, all that remains of a devastated world once held by the descendants of the creator races but bombarded into destruction. Can they recover the tools they need to form a resistance against a rising tide of evil?

The Depths of Desperation by Steven T. Helt – An adventure for 14th to 17th level characters who must confront an invasion that has already begun as the heroes venture into a watery world inundated by a sinister race of aquatic conquerors. What will they find left behind, and can they halt the aliens’ unstoppable advance?

Mind Tyrants of the Merciless Moons by Tim Hitchcock - An adventure for 17th to 19th level characters, that takes place among the moons of a gas giant.

To Kill A Star by Jason Nelson – An adventure for 19th to 20th level characters, that takes place on a constructed Dyson-sphere surrounding a waning star.

Who doesn't? Not that the movie did the best job of bringing the books to the big screen, not enough pulp in the movie.

    I'll dot, definitely interested.

    Liberty's Edge

I have to say I love it so much that I do like the movie.

Silver Crusade RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16

When I saw the first trailer, I was only midway through it, and I was like "no way, can it be..." Naturally my wife had no idea who John Carter was.

Really, it was a fine movie, but only Barsoom fans were into it. They didn't sell Barsoom through it. It was too, I dunno, it felt both too focused, AND too mass market to me. And thus it failed.

    A shame really.

    Liberty's Edge

If you ask me, it needed more Carter.
Taylor Kitsch was good, but for this movie, when the main lead takes over most of the film on it's back, you needed much much more.
    But I liked it anyway.

Silver Crusade RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16

GM - ok so Barsoom, gotcha. Are we talking solar sailing pirate ships? A ray gun in one hand and a cutlass in the other? Large breasted women with exotic names and skin of every color in the rainbow?

I'm trying to get if the flavor is strictly Barsoom-ish, or is that your closest approximation?

    Is it also like:

    Treasure Planet?

    Ice Pirates?

    Dune?

    Stargate?

    Firefly?

    Buck Rogers?

    Space 1999?

    Space 1889?

Ever read "Glory Road" by Robert Heinlein?

    Any help is appreciated.

If the thing starts on Golarion, and then goes off-planet, deity choices seem, well, like they get left behind? Starting languages will be useless?

You've given a very narrow list of sources, which is fine. Are you willing to entertain specific requests to broaden it? Particularly with respects to archetypes?

I'm potentially interested in this - is Legendary Planet even out though?

    Make you a sword
    of me...

If you will have me, I will make a character background as soon as possible. It will be done by tomorrow evening.

    See you soon!

The exposition you paint is intriguing, GM, though I must second Zahir's point; where would you say the atmosphere is juxtaposed between the various examples laid-out?

Personality-wise, I'm thinking an individual out-of-place in society yet not disparaging of it who looks at this shift as more of an opportunity for a new beginning would be a rewarding experience to play. Mechanically, I would like to try the spheres of power as I've not done so yet. Weather incanter, I believe.

I can specify more when I better know the mood approximation of the setting as mentioned above!

The prologue and first main adventure have been released. The second adventure should be out at the end of this month, and everything should be fairly timely after that. ^^

    Skylark? "Doc" Smith fan?

What are your thoughts on "Archtypes?" Are they allowed, and could we use Archtypes from something like "Paizo: Ultimate Combat"?

Cool - I have a concept I'm tinkering with; a bit of a Skill Monkey type, but that will largely depend on the Archtype options - if at all.

Should have something later this evening...

Ok, I will answer the questions as best I can.

1st - Look at the spoiler in the initial post, as it lists what Legendary Games has "published" about each of the adventures.
2nd - Here is the LINK to the Legendary Planet Kickstarter. Read as much of that as you want.
3rd - Only Chapter 0 (Prequel) and Chapter 1 are out, as Rednal mentions, and Chapter 2 is due this month.

    Chapter 0 - Prequel
Investigate what happened in the small village of Holver's Ferry which leads to two places outside of town to investigate. The second is a small dungeon (about 15 rooms). Standard fantasy. You will be 2nd level and about halfway to 3rd level by the end of this Chapter.

Chapter 1 - To Worlds Unknown
Read the spoiler. I really don't want to give away more than that Spoiler -> "To Worlds Unknown by Jim Groves – An adventure for 2nd to 5th level characters, featuring a breakout from an interplanetary prison and the exploration of a crime-infested hub world that could provide a gateway home, or draw the heroes deeper into a web of alien conspiracies and cryptic alliances."

From what I am inferring from Chapter 1, Stargate is apropos, in that I believe that you go thru gates to get to further adventures. Also, and this is potentially wrong, you meet an NPC that "guides" you along your path to find a way home but you go to other worlds first (see spoiler).

You meet new character races and familiar races. New languages. Technology, slowly and easily integrated. I am not big into "guns" so while there may be some in Chapters beyond 1, there is none in 0 & 1.

Archetypes - If it is in the APG, ok. No other books. For my sanity sake, I am tying to keep this relatively simple. However, like mentioned, there will be some technology add on as we get further, but right now I do not know what that will look like.

"Personality-wise, I'm thinking an individual out-of-place in society yet not disparaging of it who looks at this shift as more of an opportunity for a new beginning would be a rewarding experience to play." <- Sounds like a fine concept and something akin to Kit 'Skylark' Bridger.

In my buddy email to me one of the statements was "Someone who loves to explore just for explorations sake! When he arrives on a new planet, he will be giddy with a new land to explore, but will also have to use all his knowledge from home to keep his companions safe."

Right now, only Skylark is selected. I will not make any other choice till the end of the recruitment period.

Treasure Planet? - not read or seen
Ice Pirates? - I think I saw this movie a long time ago.
Dune? - Read and seen the movie
Stargate? - Seen movie and some of series
Firefly? - haven't seen, but isn't this similar to Serenity (which I have seen)?
Buck Rogers? - seen a long time ago.
Space 1999? and Space 1889? - never seen

Ever read "Glory Road" by Robert Heinlein? - One of my favorite books.

Actually I am not familiar with his works, but doing a quick read in Wikipedia it does seem apt.

I just thought it would be interesting for this burly 'mountain man' to have the nickname 'Skylark' and for him to tell a different tall tale on how he got it as a nickname every time he's asked.

Silver Crusade RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16

Some of those are maybe trick questions:

Treasure Planet - an enjoyable translation of Treasure Island into a space pirates genre

Dune - Many books, and 2 movies. I put it on the list because their tech is a mishmash of high and low. Shields make guns less usable, etc.

Firefly - Serenity was an attempt to "wrap up" the TV series. Most who enjoy the genre would hold up Firefly as possibly the best SciFi series ever. It streams, so I definitely recommend it.

Space 1999 was a TV series. How old do I feel that it was set 17 years ago?

Space 1889 was a Victorian space adventure RPG. A bit steampunkish.

I'm ashamed that I didn't ask about Flash Gordon though. Either the comic books. The cartoons. The 80's movie. But especially the old black and white serial TV show.

Well, if you liked Glory Road, then we're kindred spirits.

With a Skylark on deck, I'm hard pressed to not, at least, consider the idea of a "Lensman" character, hahaha.

Oh, hmmm, belay my last. If that "Skylark" isn't based off "Doc" Smith's Skylark, then maybe a Lensman isn't needed.

So, if you're hard down on ONLY the CRB and the APG, that does quite simplify the character creation process.

Is the idea here that the Golarion-born character undergoes some transformation, whereby their mind and such get transferred into an alien body type.

OR, is the idea here that a certain number of players would swap out their Golarion-born characters, for an offworld-born character lock, stock, and barrel?

Is the spheres stuff fuly integrated into all casters or is it you could be a classic caster OR SOP type?

Not sure what you are asking in the first question. However, you can either be a CRB/APG non-SOP caster using a CRB/APG class (aka wizard, etc). Or you can be an SOP caster use one of the SOP classes (such as Thaumaturge).

If that is not what you are asking, please clarify.

As far as I know, they are only available for sale, ie. no SRD for them. However, I have not investigated that in any detail.

    The Expansion Handbooks.

I'm interested in joining up as an outlaw mage that slowly takes to the wonders of technology as we explore new strange worlds. I'd particularly like to play a Wizard, but would be comfortable running an Alchemist for the purposes of being a skill based character. I'm not interested in using SOP, personally

Hello, this is Dain I'm submitting more details on the character for consideration.

This character is meant to be a combination of a bounty hunter/tomb raider (In this case a Gunslinger Rogue).

I will be putting together details like the background in terms of more relevant concepts such as culture, beliefs and values - but for now this is just the "Crunch".

Please let me know what you think so far.

Thanks again for your consideration :)

    PirateDevon wrote:

Much, but not all of SoP is open content. Here is a wiki that contains the nuts and bolts ruleset that tells how the system works. There are new classes as well (which I think are not open content), and conversions for existing Paizo classes for the SoP system (which I'm not sure about being open content or not).

Dotting with interest. I'm thinking a Kaer Maga Tian-ethnic Sweettalker heretic that believes that with proper focus, the voice of god can be channeled (and is a heretic because the PC talks). I would use the Thaumaturge class with a newly created casting tradition. Since there isn't much information on the god that the Sweettalkers worship, I'd be creating that too.

Technically, the class DESCRIPTIONS are Product Identity, but I think the rules themselves aren't...? Depends on how you define "description", I guess, but I always assumed that to mean the flavor text. XD

Heh, yeah, I think you're right, Rednal. That's good news - hopefully that wiki gets updated soon! Some of the classes in SoP are pretty great, both thematically and mechanically, and I love the casting tradition stuff.

Probably going to go for a melee-warrior type.

I like that character concepts aren't being done in a vacuum and the GM is providing advice, so I'll throw out my current three ideas and cross my fingers for guidance:

Bard - yeah, a bard. All of the write-ups imply that exploration and learning about the universe out there will be huge. Who better than a Bard? All of the legal archetypes seem to hurt Bardic Knowledge though, so I'd use a Vanilla bard.

Oracle of Lore - Fewer skill points than the Bard though. And not the best Mystery ever.

Oradin - I haven't seen anyone throwing down a real healer concept. Hmmm, the Ranger is melee, and there are other melee entrants, so I could do this as an archer. Either way, skill points will be a problem, in a game that looks to be skills heavy.

Only sort of, with the high Cha you can skimp a bit on the social skills to buff the others. I myself was looking at Bard too but it occurred to me that if skills are that important that this might be a game where those skill based feats might actually see the light of day a little more. MY 2 cp anyway
