Namfoodle Ningel Boomspell |
You notice a small wizard stumble his way into the arena awestruck at just how easily he was able to get past the first round. As he gets closers you notice he is not a man but a gnome with long grayish blond hair and teal eyes. His clothes seem to be a bit worn but not in taters, let's call it "well loved". He is not the most intimidating opponent on the field, but you'd be wise not to count him out just yet.
Kearan the Short |
Across from Namfoodle is another short wizard, although significantly taller than the gnome. A grubby-looking dwarf is there, absently scratching at his beard as though attempting to remove the dirt that covers it. His hair is long, perhaps auburn beneath the dirt, and looks like it was plaited in the typical dwarven style some time ago. His eyes are surveying the arena and his opponents, however, taking in the surroundings with a calm but watchful gaze.
Moley |
Before you see the next competitor, you hear a voice:
"Get in there. Either you win us the winner's purse, or you die. Can't say which I'm hoping for more."
A skinny and rather dirty looking middle aged man seems to walk reluctantly into the arena, looking back nervously at the entrance. Eventually he makes it to the starting mark and he looks at the rest of the wizards in the arena, his eyes growing wider and wider with fear.
DM Kor |
"Four wizards enter, one wizard leaves", booms a loud voice which echoes throughout the arena. This is closely followed by the clapping and cheering of hundreds of people.
The four wizards standing within the area, scan the arena for the source of these sounds, but nothing can be seen through the obsidian black walls.
"In the northwest corner, we have the human abjurer, Kavra. Let see if he can ward off his opponents?" This is follow by a mild applause and a few whistles.
"In the north east corner, we have the great and dashing... what... he couldn't make it? Well who do we have instead? Moley? Who the hell is he?" A brief pause with some inaudible hushed whispers follow. "Sorry about that folks, with a last minute substitution, we have Moley the human diviner, who's hoping to see his first win today." This is followed by some claps and moans.
"In the southwest corner we have Namfoodle Ningel Boomspell, human evo... dammit doesn't anyone double check these cards first. Look at him... he's a gnome... and if his looks confused the dimwit who wrote up these cards, the name alone shouts out GNOME." Another brief pause ensues along with some muffle cursing. "Ahem... we have Namfoodle the gnome evoker, here to charge up some excitement." Several laughs and claps follow... mostly laughs.
"And our final competitor today, surfacing to create a win for himself, is the dwarven transmuter, Kearan the Short." Cheers and whistles follow, along with someone shouting out loudly, "Who the heck brought a dwarf to a wizard duel?"
"Alright wizards... ready yourselves... keep it interesting... don't get fried by the 'coil'... and above all else, enjoy destroying your fellow wizards!" Signaling the start, a loud high pitched sound reverberates through the arena, which sounds like a dying harpy screaming.
Initiative Rolls:
Kavra: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 1 = 13
Namfoodle: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (5) + 0 = 5
Kearan: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19
Moley: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14
1. Kearan
2. Moley
3. Kavra
4. Namfoodle
Kearan the Short |
Kearan finishes scratching at his nose and casts a leery eye toward the loudmouth in the crowd. "Same dwarf what caught you diddlin' yer goat last night, ye durn fool," he mutters, reaching into his component pouch as he steps forward. Pulling out a cocoon, he mutters a few guttural dwarven phrases and waves one hand while popping the chrysalis into his mouth. "Gnome, what say we team up on the longshanks?" These are the last words from the dwarf before his body curls and shifts, elongating until he stands as a massive ape, hulking forward on its long, thickly muscled arms.
Moving forward and casting polymorph to assume giant ape form. I'll be centered on (P,15) with a space of 3 squares by 3 squares.
Namfoodle Ningel Boomspell |
Namfoodle nods to Kearan in agreement and moves to 16E. Looking at Kavra, Namfoodle puts his hand straight out and summons Bigby's Hand into existence in space 7D. He then curls his fingers in, the floating hand mimics his action grappling Kavra. Grasping Hand command.
Grapple Check: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23
If grapple is successful
Bonus Action
"Crusher him" Namfoodle commands Bigby's Hand.
The spell doesn't say anything about needing to make an attack roll for this, so if I do just let me know and I'll make one.
Bludgeoning Damage: 2d6 + 8 + 4 ⇒ (5, 5) + 8 + 4 = 22
DM Kor |
Namfoodle casts his spell hoping to summon forth a fist of crushing doom, but instead a wisp of smoke appears in his hand as does a nearly inaudible "poof" sound.
Namfoodle appears confused about what just happened, but being the smart wizard that he is, he has deduced that something has magically prevented him from casting the spell in that particular spot.
DM Kor |
Some ooohh's and aaahh's from the crowd echo into the arena as the first round completes.
"Ouch folks, you can almost feel Namfoodle's surprise and shock on that one... that's a 5th circle spell gone from his repertoire."
"Anyone want to start taking bets on how long these 'teams' last? It looks like the dwarf is already making a monkey of himself! And it seems as though Moley is quick to test the resolve of the 'coil."
Round 2
Kearan the Short |
With a loud grunt bordering on a roar, Kearan begins to pound over toward Kavra, deciding to leave Moley for now.
Double move to be centered on (I,6) unless something stops my progress, in which case I'll poke around following its edge in hopes of getting around it.
DM Kor |
The huge ape thunders forward until it comes to a dead stop as it smacks face first into an invisible wall.
The annoyed furry beast starts smacking his hands on the wall, only learn that he is able to reach over the top of it. Being an apt climber, the ape steps onto the 5' high raised area next to him and launches himself over the invisible wall.
With his target in sight and now reachable, he closes the distance to Kavra.
Using 50' of movement, Kearan makes his way to I6. I have highlight an area in light blue where Kearan had run into what was presumably a wall of force.
Kavra |
"Two on one is hardly fair. You should probably bring the invisible guy, too." Kavra smirks and then begins to make a scooping motion with both hands while intoning, and the earth itself rises up to form a man like shape that stands between Kavra and Kearan. "Beat him until he's no longer a threat please" says Kavra while pointing at Kearan.
Place my earth elemental in squares F6-7 and g6-7 please. Kavra will also move to D8. It's initiative is Elemental Initiative: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (5) - 1 = 4
Namfoodle Ningel Boomspell |
Noticing the height at which the great ape vaulted the will Namfoodle aims his finger to a point in the air and mumbles a few words under his breath. Suddenly large chunks of ice begin falling from the sky down upon both Kavra and his new stoney friend.
Namfoodle is casting Ice Storm into the air above C6, which, if I'm interpreting this right, should fall straight down on both Kavra and the earth elemental in a 40' cylinder causing each to take damage.
Bludgeoning Damage: 2d8 + 4 ⇒ (3, 4) + 4 = 11
Cold Damage: 4d6 + 4 ⇒ (5, 1, 6, 6) + 4 = 22
You get to make a Dexterity save for half damage and until the end of my next turn the whole area of the spell in considered difficult terrain.
DM Kor |
Kavra you need to:
1. Make a Dex save.
2. Make a Concentration check for your elemental.
3. Attack with your elemental if you haven't lost concentration.
Kavra |
Kavra's Dex Save: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
There is an almost inaudible popping sound as some sort of defensive magic powers down around Kavra. That attack got all the way through my Arcane ward and dealt me a bit of damage besides.
Elemental's Dex Save: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (15) - 1 = 14
Concentration (With advantage from warcaster) DC 16: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 61d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13
......
Slam attacks from the elemental: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 131d20 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10
Damage Rolls: 2d8 + 5 ⇒ (6, 6) + 5 = 172d8 + 5 ⇒ (6, 8) + 5 = 19
DM Kor |
Kavra, can you also make a Dex save for your elemental vs the Ice Storm damage. (The d20's do not appear to be your friend).
DM Kor |
With first blood drawn by Namfoodle the crowd cheers on with excitement.
Kavra seems only slightly scratched by the powerful Ice Storm which formed above him and his conjured earth elemental. The elemental slams Kearan the giant ape with one of it's rocky fists. And Moley... Moley is nowhere to be seen.
The radius of the Ice Storm is slightly blocked by the force wall, helping people to learn where it is. Based on people observing where Kearan climbed over it, it appears to be 10' high. I have marked on the map all the areas of the wall that have been interacted with.
"Good round wizards! 'Sniff' 'Sniff', what's that I smell... I think I smell me some fried Moley."
A loud hum is heard from the Tezlok coil as at first a few sparks randomly dance around it and are then follow by electricity arcing throughout the golden coils.
Round 3
1. Kearan
2. Moley
3. Kavra
4. Namfoodle
5. Kavra's Earth Elemental
Kearan the Short |
Kearan--in ape form--grunts as the earth elemental forms and attacks him, one stony slam connecting. With eerie silence for a creature his size, the polymorphed dwarf returns the assault with one of his own, large fists slamming into the earthen creature.
Attack 1: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (20) + 9 = 29
Critical Damage 1: 6d10 + 6 ⇒ (10, 1, 6, 3, 6, 5) + 6 = 37
Attack 2: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (8) + 9 = 17
Damage 2: 3d10 + 6 ⇒ (9, 10, 4) + 6 = 29
Advantage Concentration DC 10: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 221d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22
Damage is being tracked under the form information in the profile.
Kavra |
Here is my alternate action. It still puts me in the area of the Ice Storm, so that wouldn't change any of that results.
Kavra moves directly in front of Kearan and unleashes the cold of the arctic tundra.
I will provoke an attack of opportunity walking in. It's a 60' cone that will go all the way to the back wall (r3-9).
Cone of Cold Damage (DC 17 Constitution Save): 8d8 ⇒ (6, 3, 3, 6, 6, 2, 3, 5) = 34
DM Kor |
"Wait a minute, who in the crowd conjured that elemental? No more interfering with the game or you will be disintegrated!"
Time seems to slow to a stop, as everyone becomes frozen in place. There is a bright white flash, and suddenly everyone has the feeling of deja vu.
We are back at Round 2. Kavra has cast a Cone of Cold. The wall of force still stands. There never was an elemental in the area... just ignore the loose rocks and dirt in front of Kearan where it looks like there might have been an elemental.
We have some saves and concentration checks to make as per the Discussion Thread. Then its onto Moley's turn to close out Round 2
Moley |
Having made his save, Moley takes 1/2 damage (17) which requires a DC 10 concentration save.
Moley had a dream last night that this would happen, and he had a vision that he would roll a 17 on this save (17+3=20), and low and behold, that's exactly what he rolls! Concentration maintained.
DM Kor |
Right now it is Round 2, and it is Namfoodle's turn to finish the round. The wall of force is still up, and Ice Storm has not yet been cast.
Namfoodle Ningel Boomspell |
I'm just going to repost my previous action with some slight ajustments to omit the elemental.
Noticing the height at which the great ape vaulted the will Namfoodle aims his finger to a point in the air and mumbles a few words under his breath. Suddenly large chunks of ice begin falling from the sky down upon Kavra.
Namfoodle is casting Ice Storm into the air above C6, which, if I'm interpreting this right, should fall straight down on Kavra in a 40' cylinder causing him to take damage.
Bludgeoning Damage: 2d8 + 4 ⇒ (3, 3) + 4 = 10
Cold Damage: 4d6 + 4 ⇒ (4, 6, 5, 4) + 4 = 23
You get to make a Dexterity save for half damage and until the end of my next turn the whole area of the spell in considered difficult terrain.
Crazy how it ended up being the same amount of damage.
DM Kor |
Kavra to make a Dex Save (DC 16), and a Concentration check (DC 16). That will finish Round 2.
Round 3
1. Kearan
2. Moley
3. Kavra
4. Namfoodle
Namfoodle Ningel Boomspell |
I don't mean to be a rule judge, but you according to the class features section on your profile you only obtain an Arcane Ward if you cast and Abjuration spell. Now both Wall of Force and Cone of Cold are Evocation spells so you shouldn't have an Arcane Ward so you should have taken the entirety of the damage.
The only reason I didn't mention this last time is the fact that I wasn't sure what school Conjure Elemental came from, which looking back I should have known it was obviously from the Conjuration school.
Kavra |
Concentration Check (With advantage from Warcaster): 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 71d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16
I was assuming that we had mage armor up, since it is a non-concentration duration spell. If I am wrong that's okay, I just need to know that. Based on that assumption, I should have my ward up, as Mage Armor is an abjuration spell. If not, then you are correct that I would take full damage.
DM Kor |
While I perhaps should have specified in the list of rules, all wizards started with no spells pre-cast -- this was intentional as it made one have to decide whether to start layering up defenses, or go all out attack.
DM Kor |
Round 2 Status Summary
Kearan: 82/82 (157/157) HP; Effects: Giant Ape
Moley: 55/72 HP; Effects: Invisible
Kavra: 29/62 HP; Effects: None
Namfoodle: 62/62 HP; Effects: None
Kearan the Short |
Still in ape form, Kearan growls as the cold washes over him, but he maintains his spell and presses forward, swinging viciously down at the other wizard.
Attack 1: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (17) + 9 = 26
Damage: 3d10 + 6 ⇒ (4, 8, 7) + 6 = 25
Attack 2: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (18) + 9 = 27
Damage: 3d10 + 6 ⇒ (1, 5, 2) + 6 = 14
Moley |
"Oh, to HELL with it..." you hear from O-8 as Moley drops his invisibility spell.
He makes a quick nod and wink to Kavra and casts a spell, and where Kavra once was, now a T-Rex stands, the arena shakes as its roar overwhelms the arena. (I am making the assumption that Kavra will choose NOT to resist the Polymorph spell, otherwise, a saving throw is required)
Moley sees the horror he has created, turns, and runs the opposite direction (Stopping in R14 - unless Kavra somehow maintained concentration on the Wall of Force after the Ape onslaught in which case he stops at R9) - note that if the Wall of Force remains, the polymorph will technically not interrupt Kavra's concentration.
Kavra |
Speaking of Which, Here are my concentration rolls pre T-Rex form:
First Concentration Check vs. DC 12: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 31d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19
Second Concentration Check vs. DC 10: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 111d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
The wall is still up.
The Abjur-Rex will unleash a primal roar and then attack the Gorilla with bite and tail.
Bite: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (4) + 10 = 14 | Damage Roll: 4d12 + 7 ⇒ (1, 5, 12, 8) + 7 = 33
Tail: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (1) + 10 = 11 | Damage Roll: 3d8 + 7 ⇒ (4, 1, 4) + 7 = 16
Namfoodle Ningel Boomspell |
Seeing Moley reappear Namfoodle thinks Finally, that little scaredy longshanks shows himself.
Namfoodle start to move toward his position and points to a spot at the same hightime on the other side of Kearan making ice fall from the sky behind him as well.
Single movement to J16 and cast Ice Storm above O6 which causes the entire area behind Kearan to be hit and become difficult terrain. At the end of my turn the area I first effected with [i]Ice Storm will no longer be difficult terrain.
Bludgeoning Damage: 2d8 + 4 ⇒ (5, 7) + 4 = 16
Cold Damage: 4d6 + 4 ⇒ (1, 1, 6, 2) + 4 = 14
Just a little question though since the spell is coming from above the wall and coming straight down shouldn't the effects affect both sides of the wall, just wondering.
