DM Khel |
Yeah, they are tough.
Oloch – sorry if I wasn’t clear, they do not bypass hardness. Your approach was correct, to compare the damage rolled to the hardness. Your weapon becomes broken if it takes damage above and beyond the hardness so, with a hardness of 12, your sword cannot be broken by hitting these things.
John Carlos struggles to make his healing wand work, and finds it just as frustrating as using magic on the caryatid columns! Falom gets a little distance from her opponent and deftly brings it crashing to the ground! The fallen one takes a swipe at Yugatta as she steps up and grabs hold of it! Oloch brings his blade down hard, smashing chips of stone off the statue before him and leaving it looking battered indeed!

Willem nods at John, barely able to get words out. "These.. things... are tough. I could use a bit of respite before going back in there."
Willem will take the full defense action for this round until he can get some healing.

Looks like Oloch has that one contained. I better move over to where my other allies are taking hits... now what was that dang command word?
Staying in range of the injured Sir Willem, he drifts over towards where Falom is chain tripping the other statue. With a flourish he tries to activate the wand again.

John continues to struggle with the healing stick, his frustration mounting! Falom drops her favorite target back on the stone floor! John "the Antagonizer" Carlos |
John, just briefly taken back by the comments, quickly recovers. "Ah yes, you have a good point. Unfortunately all my magic is ineffective so I'm merely attempting to get someone back in the fight who can actually do some damage. If I had the martial prowess of you or the others, it would certainly be a waste doing nothing. Sadly though, I do not."
Ser Willem Dargerion |
Willem is just continuing to hold with full defense until he is healed. He has Combat Reflexes in case the statue attempts to get past him.
"I trust in your ability to make that thing work, John." Willem keeps himself back and his shield up.

@GM, I think that means both attacks missed. Can you confirm? And can I retconn that last action if so?
I agree, the AoO and the regular attack would have missed. I have no problem with a retcon, since it's the same round.
John, frustrated beyond belief by his struggle with the wand, gives up and moves into a strategic - and dangerous - position. Falom once again sends the stone demon crashing to the ground! One would not normally expect a statue's expression to change, but this one's face seems to be carved into a mask of fury and frustration, like you'd see on a sorcerer trying to use a healing wand. Oloch, having found an approach that seems to work, walks up to the prone statue and smashes a quarter of its head off! Its expression of frustration at being laid once again on the ground is still, however, quite visible.

Oloch lands a powerful blow on the creature as it stands, and it freezes up - if a statue could be stunned, it would look like this one. It does not fall however, and appears to raise its blade slowly to strike, but Yugatta’s sword knocks off its nose! It crashes to the floor and is still.
That was a tougher fight than I expected, nice work everyone! I’m going to hand the reins to Hmm now, who will gently guide you through the rest of the basement (unless she kills you while you’re not looking...) I’ll be back online later this week or next weekend.
John "the Antagonizer" Carlos |
John just stares as the statue crumbles, breath in, breath out... breath in, breath out...
Taking a few deep calming breaths, he glances around to see if any other pillars, statues, exhibits, doors, walls or floors are currently attacking. Not seeing anything at the moment, he slips his knife back into the fancy sheath and his wand into his pocket. Looking around at his allies he adds, "don't look to me for healing, I've already proven that's a farce."
He takes a few more calming breaths and works to fix up his appearance, straightening his tussled hair and patting the thick stone dust off his clothes. After about a minute, he is standing a little bit back from the door ready to go. He pulls his resharpened dagger out, refreshes his light spell onto it and adds with a smile, "ready when you all are."
GM Hmm |
Back-up GM, Hmm, clocking in.
As you kick the pieces of crumbled statue out of the way, you look at the next door leading out of this room. The words, Scriptorium, are written over it.
My assumption here as GM is that you will all want to spend time using CLW wands to heal up before opening any door. I also assume that you will want to check for traps before entering any door in the Blakros Museum. You’re not stupid; you’re Pathfinders and this place has a rep, right?
In the interest of pacing, I am going to simply roll you into the next room because you are here to explore. However feel free to roll for healing at the start of your post if you need it! You may also decide that you want to cast buffs at the beginning of your posts and that’s fine. Just let me know if you have some buff wand that you always use before you kick in any door. Also, if you have a standard marching order, I would love to see it reflected in the grouping on the bottom of the slide.

You all check the door, but seeing no immediate traps, you decide to cautiously step inside. This dark, vaulted chamber serves as a scriptorium, where texts from the archives next door may be read or copied at leisure. Bare wooden shelves, empty except for some extra writing supplies — sheets of parchment, bottles of ink, and quills — line the eastern wall, and three desks with high stools stand in the center of the room between six columns. Nothing attacks you as you enter. You don’t get strangled by the carpet, and all the furniture lies dormant and harmless.
A small sign on the southern door reads Archives—Private. A body lies slumped in the southwestern corner, still clutching a club. Its legs have been eaten away by acid, and the corpse is already showing signs of putrefaction, with patches of mold on the skin. A broken lantern lies next to the body, its oil spilled on the floor.
What would you like to check in here? If you wish you can do heal, perception and / or survival checks to try to examine this scene, CSI-style. If you have some other profession skill that you think might be useful here, go for it. You can also use a Knowledge Local to identify the corpse if you’d like. As always, I award bonuses for good roleplay.
Ser Willem Dargerion |
Willem does not have such a wand, and so if anyone is willing, he will gladly accept healing, otherwise he is at 4hp.
Willem looks at the body and the room, taking in every detail that he can. "Whoever or whatever did that didn't want someone getting away." He takes his sword and use the point to move the body a bit so he can get a good look at its face, or what remains of it.

GM Hmm |
Given that you cannot take ten in UMD (save for Pathfinder Chronicler Prestige Class) you cannot take 20, either. But your party has Oloch, a warpriest who can happily operate all wands from the cleric spell list!
Sir Willem studies the face, but cannot recognize a noble lineage for it. You do recognize that the livery he’s wearing is in the colors of the Blakros family. Perhaps this was one of their servants or employees?
Yugatta studies the corpse, discovering a number of interesting things. First, the wounds and blood trail indicate that he was mortally wounded in a fight with the very same statues you defeated. After falling prey to statues, he dragged himself into this room, but perished from his wounds before he could go for more help. A little more disturbingly, his corpse has now become home to mold spores in a rainbow of colors. You also find a ripped nametag from the corpse’s torn clothing, with the name “Hodd” upon it.
Knowledge Nature, Dungeoneering or Herbalist to learn more about the molds.
The two northern desks each contain small, empty candelabra, two bottles of dried ink, and old quill pens. The southern desk has been used more recently—the candelabrum holds the stubs of half-burnt candles, the ink bottles are still wet, and fresh ink stains the quill pens. A handful of books and scrolls, treatises on the solar system and the empty space beyond, lie open on the desk.
If anyone in the party can read through the notes, you may make a Knowledge (history) to gain more information.
Yanni also turns up a sheet of parchment that fell beneath the desk and was forgotten. Written in Osiriani, it contains sketches and diagrams of a gate, some images of canisters and what looks to be brains with leaves growing out of them. You can see the name Imrizade written clearly at the bottom.

As he looks at the body, he nods to Yugatta. "You are right. This is a Blakros servant. Look at the colors on his clothes. Hodd, I think, was his name. There is more going on here than I believe we were told." He indicates the mold and leaves with his blade. "This, unfortunately, is not my forte."
Looking over the paperwork, he shakes his head. "I should have paid attention when I was being taught languages. This name though, Imrizade, mean anything to any of you?"

John steps into the room after no immediate threats present themselves. He moves over first to the body as it is most likely to rise up and attack... maybe. He keeps a very close eye on the desk, it looks shifty.
He leans down and inspects the corpse and then adds with a smile, "Hm... this is (h)odd." He looks around to the group, then points out the name tag with a chuckle. John resumes his inspection, looking closely at the mold.
K: Dungeoneering: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20
After sharing what he knows about the molds, he moves up to the desk at the prodding of Oloch. "Why Oloch, I thought magic was only for destruction? If you wish me to burn this all, I think I can do that."
He pulls out a scroll and begins to activate it, essentially brute forcing his innate magical power through the spell recorded until it works. Oddly enough, the desk and papers do NOT burst into flame and instead he starts looking intently through the papers.
Comprehend Languages Scroll used.
John shares that from reading the underlined passages and margin notes, there is a lot or reference to the “the Dark Tapestry” and the “Dominions of the Black,” as well as something called the “Gate of Beyond.” He thinks that might be a long-lost portal to these otherworldly realms. He also points out references to an ancient aberrant sorcerer named Kubburum Ishme-dagan and the mad wizard Ralzeros the Overwatched are also highlighted. He adds that he should probably look up information about Kubburum Ishmedagan sometime... for fun.
I'm guessing anyone can now roll K: History for more information or just John? He doesn't exactly have that trained so I'm hoping it is the former.
Turning to Ser Willem he responds, "oh her, she's the one we are looking for down here. I'm guessing this is where she was studying the artifacts."

Willem nods, "Oh right. You know, you rescue enough damsels, they tend to blend in the mind... ", he trails off. "If you think this body and its new growth would be dangerous, we should probably destroy it, lest someone else get hurt by it."
