"A'right, that last one does sound tempting, but if it gets loose then we still have it running off and warning others.

If you're conflicted K'rael, I don't recall it surrendering ta me."

Kra'el looks levelly at Ingra and Zalindra and responds in a grim tone. "I am not conflicted. This creature is a danger to us and to others. It will die here."

The dragonborn seems more resigned and realistic rather than having any real desire to kill the thing.

Cecilia glances back and forth between Ingra and Kra'el, looking unsettled She taps the goblin's blade against her thigh, most of her previous enthusiasm now gone.

"Killing an unarmed prisoner doesn't seem like a very heroic thing to do." The bard says, looking down at the squirming creature. "As citizens and patrons of Brindol I think there is a question we should all ask ourselves. 'What would the Diamond League do in this situation?'"

She lets that question hold still in the night air. But while her words are full of conviction, her body language is not as confident as it could be. She is not really sure what they could do with goblin, except maybe just set him free.

"The Diamond League would kill it," Dayana offers plainly. "If you all feel so squeamish, I will do the deed for you, but leaving it alive is only a hindrance to our own efforts or involves leaving it to a vastly crueller fate than a quick death."

Jathal blinks in confusion at those who seem to be suggesting mercy. "Kill it." She states. We're not playing hero despite what some seem to think. It's an enemy that has attacked, burnt and murdered because it enjoys such things. Let it go and it will happily do it again."

Despite his suspicions, Aelion was not so eager to kill the thing now that it was helpless, but he had to agree with the others, despite seeing Cecilia's point of view. "Make no mistake, we are at war; while we should not pattern our actions after theirs, neither should we show misplaced kindness. Its death will be swift. That is what mercy we can offer now."


As Dayana dismisses the only real argument Cecilia could muster, the bard steps back with Zalindra and allows Kra'el to administer the goblin's fate with stern precision.

Once the goblin lies limp beside its comrade Cecilia takes a moment to breath, before walking back to Kra'el.

"That looks nasty, here, let me at least do something about that for you." Cecilia gestures to the dragonborn's thigh, reaching down with her hand and channeling her bardic magic.

Standing back up, the bard announces to the rest of the group "That's the last of my magic for tonight. If we can get some rest, I can treat some more wounds in the morning."

What's the plan? Resting here, moving on?

Zalindra watches Kra'el murder the goblin with sadness, wondering what happened to the young friend that she remembered from long ago. She realizes that they no longer have anything in common, and belatedly wonders when that happened.

She quietly helps set up camp, either here or wherever the others decide, knowing that she is just along at Eshan's insistence, and that the others don't want her here, and she is just making things worse bringing up ethical questions that they could clearly not care less about. It strangely makes her feel better about her own questionable ethical choices, and her background worry about what people would think of her if they knew seems to fade away.

She finds a place near Cecilia to spread her bedroll, and doesn't say anything else before drifting off to sleep, sure that none of the others would want her to stand watch with her merely human eyesight anyway.

"We should secure the area and make sure there aren't any more of the nasties hiding nearby, and set up a watch as well. Any volunteers for such a task? I require a solid night's rest before I can prepare any more spells, so unfortunately I am unavailable for standing guard." Dayana nods firmly and finally dismounts from her horse, keeping a casual but firm—at least, as firm as her noodly arms allow—grip on the reins.

"I see best at dawn or at dusk, but if we keep a fire, I can take any watch," Aelion offered. "I suggest anyone who does not need uninterrupted rest take a watch, so that we're all rested in the morning."

Kra'el nods stoically at the healing magic and speaks quietly.

"Thank you."

As the others are setting up camp, the dragonborn takes some time to meticulously clean the blood from his blade and armor, though his dark armor hides it well enough in the first place. His voice is gentle, almost apologetic. A very uncommon tone for him to take.

"This has been a difficult day for us all. Tomorrow will not likely be easier. Get what rest you need. I will watch."

He sounds sad, perhaps resigned. The quiet, introspective look he takes on during his watch shows a contrast to the confident resolve that has been more typical of the dragonborn.

They kill us and we kill them. Is there good in this? Is it truly necessary?
...I do not know. But I will continue the cycle tomorrow without reserve. What does that say about me?

Kra'el is willing to watch all night if needed, but he'll take rest if he's confident that one of the elves or Dayana is watching since they showed themselves able to navigate competently in the dark/moonlight.

Ingra picks at some of the dried tar on her armor, the burns minor but uncomfortable.

"I can take a watch. I might not have hit anything, but I guarantee you'll hear me if I want you to. But I'd like to sleep off some of these burns and scrapes. I'll take second watch, maybe 2 hours? Whatever ya need me ya do."

Ingra took a seat, feeling more exhausted than she had in a long time. Training was tiring, but real battle took tolls on the mind and emotions as well.

She went to take a swig of her stout, but settled for a whiff instead. She didn't know when she'd be able to refill and didn't want to waste it.

After checking her equipment Jathal finds a quiet spot and curls up in her cloak to sleep. She'll be busy in the morning scouting and so is trying to rest as much as she can.

She still hold doubts about some of the companions and doesn't join in any conversations going.


After a very long night, the party of seven set up a small camp off to the side of the goblin’s trail and begin to get some rest.
What’s left of the night passes by uneventfully, and the group manage to sleep in until mid morning. The sun, already high in the sky, bakes the earth as they emerge from their slumber.

Most of the group find their cuts and bruises healing up nicely after the night’s rest, only Ingra remains in a significant amount of pain, which Cecilia soon sees to.

The party is fully healed, it’s about two hours before noon. The goblin’s trail continues north-east, in the supposed direction of Castle Rivenroar.

After waking up a bit, Dayana is fairly quick to excuse herself to prepare her spells for the day 'where there would be a bit more quiet.'

She settles down behind a nearby tree, out of sight but not out of earshot, and Beledia is already slithering his way out of her satchel and onto her lap. She gently runs a finger over the colorful viper's head before the two set to their work; the eldritch secrets of preparing magic. To the outside eye, their communion largely seems to involve direct eye contact and various tiltings of the head. Ah, witchcraft.

Zalindra helps get some breakfast prepared with whatever food everyone brought, and then cleans up, takes care of her horse, and mounts up again, ready to continue the quest to find her grandfather.


A short while before noon, the group breaks camp and sets off toward the looming, well-weathered peaks of the Giantshield mountains.

The Giantshield Mountains shelter the Elsir Vale from the harsh weather of the Endless Plains further north. As the group approaches the light pine forests and winding gorges and streams of the southern slopes, they struggle to stay on the right trail.

With the tracking skills of the elves, however, and Zalindra's rough idea of where the ruined castle should be, the group find themselves surveying the old estate of the Rivenroar family just as the sun begins to fall below the horizon.

Cecilia looked up at the remains of the estate. Her eyes were lacking their usual green fire, her lips pressed together in a thin red line. The bard had been rather... morose since their battle last night. The execution of that final goblin warrior kept repeating in her head, a bad memory that refused to go away.

Scanning the ruined castle, Cecilia looked for entrances.

But the glare of the setting sun blinded her, severely hampering the bard's efforts to survey their surroundings.

While not morose, Aelion had been quiet during their trek, ruminating over his choices, and what the future might bring. Vengeance for Bryn? Freedom for Sertanian? An all-out war with another Red Hand?

When they spotted the ruins, he first looked for any lookout that might spot them and raise an alarm, then for any entrance they might use discreetly. There would be no success if they faced the entire army head on, talented though his companions seemed.

Be it overconfidence, or sheer incompetence, the goblins of Castle Rivenroar have elected not to post a sentry this evening. Leading the group up into the quiet ruins, Aelion eventually comes to a small crypt-like structure which appears to lead deeper. The entrance to the Rivenroar catacombs.

Wary of ambush, Aelion kept a sharp eye out. "This looks like our best bet," he whispered to the others. "Let's establish an order of entry with one of those with darkvision near the front and the back. I'm willing to take the point together with whoever can stay quiet, and scout ahead. We should get the lay of the catacombs to locate wherever they took Sertanian quickly and quietly, then cause what ruckus we need on the way out."

Jathal nodded, "I'll be towards the front. Hopefully the darkness isn't a common thing."

Zalindra shrugged, guessing that her stealth skills wouldn't be wanted since apparently they were going to travel in the dark. Still quiet, she sets herself firmly in the middle of the group, putting her bow away so that she has her hands free to grope around for the walls and the person in front of her as they walk.

The big dragonborn frowns at the dark entrance, shaking his head.

"We are disadvantaged in darkness. It is better to have light for the inevitable fight than risk having to fight in the dark."

Kra'el pulls out a sunrod and lights it, threading it into the strap on his shield arm.

"I will follow some distance behind. If there is trouble, come to my light."

Picking up on Zalindra's glum mood but perhaps not the exact reason behind it, Dayana offers to the woman, "So long as they still live, we will get the prisoners back. I assure you."

When it is clear the group is ready to enter the catacombs, Dayana will cast Mage Armor on herself and bask in her impressive AC the feeling of protection granted by her defensive ward.

Cecilia looks back and forth, her gaze alternating between the elf and dragonborn. "I am somewhat confused." The bard admitted. "We are going to move through the darkness so as to maintain the element of surprise, but also carry light in case we come across anything dangerous?".

Staring at the dark entrance to the catacombs, Cecilia retrieved her crimson whip, tapping it against her thigh. "Or are we splitting into two different groups entirely? Because I think we will need to be quite far apart if we don't want the light from the rear team to give away the position of the advance team."

"I merely meant that those with darkvision would be able to see approaching foes beyond the light from our party. But yes, the advance group would need to be farther from the light, though I expect the nature of the catacombs to be twisting enough that they need not go all too far from the rest." Aelion spread his hands wide. "I could be wrong about that, of course. If I am, a single scout with darkvision could go ahead to warn us of any approaching foes, while our strength remains consolidated. Or we could just wade in and see what we see, I suppose."

"I can see in the dark... Suppose I could try. Worst comes to worst, at least I should be able to give the heads up. I know stone pretty well. Can spot hidden things easier in stonework than I can anywhere else.

So, what's our order?"

While waiting, Ingra casts Guidance on herself, planning to whenever it runs out or she uses it.

Don't know why I didn't have it prepared to begin with...

Though she didn't think she'd be needing Kord's help so soon.

Prepared spells for the day: 1st - Cure Light Wounds. Orisons - Guidance, Virtue, Stabilize.


The group discusses their planned marching order, then creeps past the thick ivy and crumbling stone before slipping through the ornate, rust-encrusted iron door leading into the Rivenroar Catacombs.

As they make their way down a narrow, winding staircase, they hear voices ahead, and the flicker of torchlight sends the shadows of goblinoids creeping up to meet the feet of those in front.

"If it comes down to a choice between moving stealthily or moving openly, I vote for the second." Cecilia said, a small smile on her lips as took up her position. Although she still found herself glancing at the murderous blades of her allies, it was obvious some energy was returning to the bard. It was hard to be so melancholy when there were lives to be saved, a song to be sung, and an adventure to be had.

However, she remained silent as they entered the tunnel, even when she heard the voices speaking in what she now recognised as the language of goblins.

Cecilia will be 3rd or 4th within the group. She will have her whip in her hands, and will continually cast Dancing Lights if the party requires illumination.

Jathal readies her arrows and tries to pick a target.


Ingra takes point, carefully tiptoeing toward the bottom of the stairs until she can see into the room beyond. Compared to the narrow stairwell, the room beyond is relatively large. It looks to be a roughly 'T' shaped entrance hall, and it appears the party have arrived right in the middle of a change of shifts.

A small group of four goblins are milling around in the center of the dank chamber, pushing and shoving each other in an almost jovial manner. Two spear-wielding goblins look on, unimpressed, having apparently just taken up posts between two great braziers flanking a set of double doors on the north wall.

The braziers bathe the top section of the 'T' in bright light, while the foot of the stairs remains relatively dim.

In the flickering light, Ingra can see a grimace cross the wide face of the guard on the right.

The two goblins on duty grip their spears tightly and step forward, dropping into a fighting stance, while those in front hurriedly draw their weapons and assemble into a rough formation.

The blue and yellow capped goblins draw bows and move into the corners of the room while the others ready short swords.

Active Effects:
The light from the braziers bathes the northern half of the chamber in bright light, while the rest of the room is filled with normal light.

Hearing Aelion whisper to the others about taking prisoners, Cecilia could not help but frown. Yes, let us take prisoners. She thought. Then we can promise them mercy, take what information we need, and then kill them when we are done with them.

Moving past all of the others, the bard took up position behind Zalindra, her whip out and ready. If any of the goblins tried to rush them, then she would send them crashing to the floor of this hall.

As the group shifts into combat, Dayana pushed herself forward through the tunnel until she came to Cecilia's side. She sucks in a deep breath before turning a chillingly dark look onto the purple-capped goblin.

Seeing the goblins taking up formation, Ingra wastes no time closing with her enemy, charging forward as Zalindra, Jathal and Aelion fill the chamber with arrows, felling one goblin and leaving another badly wounded.

Dayana hexes the goblin in purple, while Kra'el catches up to the rest of the group, bathing the nearest half of the chamber in the light of his sunrod.

The goblins in the center of the chamber swarm around Ingra and one sinks its wicked blade into the dwarf's side (4 Damage)
The blue and yellow capped goblins return fire at Zalindra and Jathal, the rogue taking an arrow to her right shoulder (3 Damage) while the slayer is struck in her left thigh (4 Damage).

Finding these goblins to be frighteningly more effective at harming the group than the ones they had fought last night, Dayana frowns. Fixing her gaze upon the brown-capped one, she weaves a hex over it.

Taking a step down the stairs to stand by Kra'el, Aelion attempted to aid Ingra, firing in rapid succession at the goblin in the red cap.

With a clash of steel and an exchange of arrows, the battle was joined.
Unfortunately none of the goblins had come into the reach of her whip, so Cecilia's contribution to this skirmish had so far had been limited. For a moment the bard considered starting a song to boost the spirits of her allies, but decided against it. Right now it was more important to disable at least one of the enemies assaulting Ingra. Otherwise the dwarf would be overwhelmed.

Moving forward, Cecilia struck out with her whip.

Elegant as a ribbon dancer, as quick as a fleeing pickpocket, the bard brought down the goblin with a series of rapid strikes to the ankles. Re-coiling her weapon with a stylish twist of her hand, Cecilia couldn't help but grin.

Sometimes this was all too easy.

Dayana hexes the goblin with the brown cap and Aelion manages to send an arrow through each of its ears before Cecilia trips up its companion in the green.

As Kra’el lumbers into the room, Ingra brings her greatsword down through the brown goblin’s chest. The mighty blow knocks the creature to the ground, where it is promptly crushed by the dragonborn’s feet as he comes up beside the dwarf.

As the green goblin struggles to find its feet, Ingra brings the blade of her sword about and delivers another fatal blow, proving herself a formidable warrior indeed.

The purple capped goblin retaliates but struggles to make it’s blade connect in the bright light of the chamber.

While the goblin archer on the right sends an arrow clattering into the wall by Cecilia, the archer in on the left takes aim at Jathal, and this time delivers a painful shot to the elf’s chest (4 Damage).

"Don't let any flee!" Aelion pressed forward, worried that the goblins would come to their senses and run for support. While he would have liked to have taken one captive, he would prefer that they didn't bring the population of the entire catacombs down on them.

Peace was hard to find down here, in the dank depths of stone, surrounded by goblins and worse, just waiting to finish him after they'd taken Bryn, not so long ago. Eyes narrowed, he took aim at the goblin in the blue cap.
