"You're welcome, Gabe", Aneira quietly replies.

Anee has a mess kit, but I just didn't realise I could have her use it to transport liquid. Sorry.

Looking to Beck for direction as to which way they should proceed, Anee will attempt to aid him or any other who is leading the way forward.

aid to Survival: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11 Least that's a +2 to Beck or Gabe.

Island of Empty Eyes Map Current Map

Sorry for the confusion but it was a single heal check and based upon that single roll you could get hours off. For instance, your first roll Venja was 23 and so you knocked a single hour off to get to 3 hours instead of four. With an aid check you could knock it down to two but no more than that as you wouldn't be able to have multiple people all doing separate heal checks on the same person. So you all have 2 hours of time around the fire not including setting it up and everything so call it 2.5 hours before then heading off. Essentially you will be able to leave at about 2pm. Also, Gabe, sunset may be late but you are currently in a snowstorm and so it will likely get dark well before 8pm. You probably have 3-4 hours of daylight left before it gets too dark to see by without lowlight or darkvision.

GM: two things - first, earlier you suggested that for every we were in the snowstorm we'd have to continue to make Fortitude Rolls with an increasingly higher DC for each successive hour.

The healing check aside, does the "Staying at a camp by a fire" reboot that issue, or is the DC static from where we left off? In other words, do we have to keep making those Fortitude Saves as soon as we set out; and when and how many and what is the DC and so on.

Also, regarding the snow storm, even if the sky was blotted out with dark clouds during a massive snowstorm, there is kind of a difference between the sun being in sky behind even extremely heavy cloud-cover and having the sun set completely behind the horizon.

I'm not disputing the fact that it will get dark, but even during snowstorms when it was snowing so hard I could hardly see five feet in front of me, it was still bright enough out that I could see across my neighborhood to pick out landmarks fairly easily when I'm walking.

Not trying to nit-pick, but as I'm the only one in the crew who can't see in the dark, I'm trying to get a bite on visibility because of "darkness" or "increment weather" as I believe there are different penalties. Dark only effects me; weather effects all of us. What's the straight word on visibility then as the day goes on?

Gabryjel nods his thanks at Aneira.

"Yep, it's the little things that do you up right," he says with satisfaction.

"That tea set me up real proper-like; my thanks Miss Whitestorm," he says, saluting her with his tin cup.

"Say, next time we get into town, we may want to pick up some supplies like this. Tea's tasty, but coffee will keep just as good, and it keeps us awake a bit when we're worn out," he says taking another hot gulp.

He glances back at the travois, thinking a bit.

"I reckon we got a good haul on the gear there, but I don't figure the town'll have much cash on hand to pay us; but I'd wager that they'd be pretty eager to do some ol' fashioned bartering - arms for food ain't bad, and with it being summer back in town, they likely got plenty of food and supplies."

When you were walking across your neighborhood you weren't doing it in the middle of a thick forest with no ambient light coming from the city you were in either. It will be dark enough that you will have significant trouble seeing. Being next to the fire for at least 1 hour resets the scaling DC back to 15.

Gabryjel's Completely Necessary and Poignant Response to GM:

Well, since you asked (rhetorical questions do count) actually - yes: I was walking through trees during the snowstorms. See, in my old neighborhood there were lots of trees and the "cool kids" would walk through this set of heavy pine trees to this really steep hill which was not anywhere near much ambient lighting (especially during 4:30 PM as there was no lighting but the sun at that time as the County mandated that all ambient lighting between 3:17 PM and 6:22 PM had to be shut off - I know, it's a weird ordinance, but you just can't fight City Hall) and we'd come to this narrow path that moved back and forth between the trees and eventually spilled out onto a small fifteen foot peninsula that was flanked by a really deep stream. The trick was that you'd try to steer your sled onto the trail, ride your sled down the path while trying not to hit the trees, then when you got to the bottom of the trail, you'd desperately try to bail out so you wouldn't tumble into the ice on the stream. FYI - a story that stupid has to be real, because that's how we did it in my neighborhood! (in other words - stupidly ;)

That's not easy to do when the snow is coming down thick; but it wouldn't work at all if we couldn't see :)

Also, as a fun aside - snow heavily reflects light, which is why even when it is 10 PM if there is even a little light shining at night, it reflects in the falling snow in the sky, and the entire horizon has this really gray light to it (which is really handy if you're forced to get out of your comfy chair and go outside and shovel out your dad's car at 10:30 at night). They call having trouble seeing in snow a "White Out" not a Blackout; and there is even some adventuring gear that is built to shield our eyes from the bright light reflecting from the snow (but luckily, not a problem while under heavy cloud cover ;)

Come to think of it, I'm really staggered at your lack of snow knowledge in general. So here's a tip, professor - next time you're back in Mother Russia dancing with Milla Jovovich why don't you spend a little less time paying attention to beautiful babies dancing in missal silos and more attention to the cold bleak landscape that was the snow - not to mention the bears on unicycles (because they're key)!

That reminds me - if I ever am able to get an Animal Companion, is it possible if I could get a Bear and Craft a unicycle for him to ride on? But wait, - In Snow-Covered Taldor - Bear rides you AHHH....

All of this is to say I'm just trying to see if I can make you laugh for some bonus XP - so enjoy my rapier-like wit - because if you don't I'll cast keen on my wit, and that's got a really potent crit range!

Gabryjel will stand up and stretch a bit, then gathers the reigns to the horse, ready to follow.

In this instance he knows his place and will simply stay at the rear of the party with the horse, bow in hand and ready to lead the horse.

Not sure if there's anything else that needs to be done "in-game", but here is his Fortitude roll for the first hour:

Beck Tavis wrote:

Gabryjel looks up suddenly from the horse.

”Oh there ain’t nothing to it, Beck,” he says, dropping the formal “mister” to Beck, as he relates fairly well to the youthful Tiefling.

He passes up the small leather-bound journal with the various notes.

”Just scan it a few moments; all the terrain stuff is marked in the beginning by page…” he thumbs quickly through the book to the section mentioning “artic terrain”, than hands it back to Beck.

”See here – it gives some neat things to keep an eye out for when we’re walking. Like here,” he says pointing to a small section.

”It says if you don’t want to be tracked easy it’s best to walk single file, to hide your numbers in the snow… Hmm…” he says for a moment, his eyes narrowing.

”Says here also, if it’s really bad weather we ought to have a rope tied between us all. That way, if we can’t see too well and the pointman is trecking along and he falls into a snow drift or ice, he’ll not drown or nothing; plus, the folks in the back won’t miss the folks in the front on account of it being dark and maybe separating by accident...”

”It also suggests that on darker nights the pointman should think about carrying a ten foot pole, so he can use it to test the snow in front for drifts… and if the snow is on top of something like a frozen pond, the pointman can find that out with the pole instead of just stepping onto ice,” he adds thoughtfully.

He glances up at Beck.

”That could also be handy if there’s more traps out there,” he says.

Looking at the others, he clears his throat nervously and hands over the book to Beck.

”Anyhow, it’s all in here,” he says quickly, then moves back to the rear of the line again.

Beck – you got the book, so you got the bonus. Meantime – whoever is right in front of me; I’m planning on having Gabryjel walk with a 10 foot space between himself and that person; just in case there are other traps around. Plus, Gabryjel has only 5/10 HP, so he’s happy to just keep walking in the back for now.

Gabryjel watches the other for a moment, noting that Beck has the journal and it will help him with the journey.

He glances down the line for a moment.

"Say, if it's going to be tricky to see, if someone can cast a "Light" spell on my arrow, my first shot will light things up so I can see what I'm shooting at for all the rest of my shots," he says to the others while he fidgets by the horse.

"If you did the same for Mister Whitestorm's arrow, it'd mean we'd have two lights to see better with. 'Course, that'll make it easier to spot us - but after two hours of getting warm by a campfire and battle to boot, I reckon maybe stealth ain't the real worry at this point," he says glancing around at the others.

"Well.. anyhow, that's just a suggestion," he says after a bit, quickly turning back to the horse and busying himself with tightening the reigns and other gear so it doesn't slip.

"Ya'll just let me know when you're ready to head out; I'm good to go," he says from his place in the rear.

You all begin to trudge through the snow again. If it wasn't for the dire circumstances, it would be quite a beautiful sight. Sounds all seem muffled by the snow and the forest contains a level of tranquility that would put your heart at ease were it not for the sinister feeling of wrongness that accompanies it.

After traveling for about an hour, you come across a narrow game trail which winds its way between the trees. Looking closer you see underlying hoof prints from a large deer or elk crossing back and forth. After a few moments of looking, a pure white elk comes walking slowly out of the trees. He looks at you closely and says Why have you come into this forest?

Male Gnome Rogue-4 (Saves-F+2,R+8,W+1; Perception +9(10 vs traps);HP 21/27)

Xanxan bows before the elk, after all, it has a crown, even if it is made of antlers "Pardon, Lord Elk, if we are intruding. I'm Xanxan Gimblewabe, and these are my friends. We're here to rescue a noblewoman and any one else in her group that might have survived. She's in terrible danger, melord Elk. We're also curious on how everything got so cold all the sudden. The snow is lovely, but the cold with it is like nothing I've ever experienced in my life."

Male Elf Magus 2 (AC: 16,12,14; HP: 20; Saves 4,2,3; Init +2, perc +2)

Variel keeps a look out for any surprises while his wife and the rest of the more diplomatic do the talking. He keeps his eyes open and looking at the trees for more evil fey. This is especially true considering the narrow confines of the game trail and the closeness of the trees. If able, he will step off the path to look better into the forest around him but not if such an action scares the elk or angers it.

Aneira moved quietly forward (her weapon now lowered and by her side) as Xan spoke first to the Great White Elk.

When Xan had finished his introduction, she respectfully bowed before the noble white elk, before adding her own courteous words to those of Xan's, "Well met, Lord Elk. My name is Aneira Whitestorm. My companion, Mister Gimblewade, has spoken the truth of our presence in your forest. We were notified of a missing noblewoman and her attendants in these parts, and of heavy snows and ice. Their carriage was attacked and there was no sign of her to be had. During our own journey through the woods, we were also attacked, by Undead creatures and Winter-touched Atomie. We are curious and concerned by such unusual events at this time of year. We, duty-bound travellers, seek to peacefully pass, and, we would be grateful for your consent and guidance, if you would honour us with such."

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (16) + 12 = 28 (+2 from Xan if he is lending aid to Anee, for a total of 30.)

Aneira moves to Gabe and touching his arrow, quietly speaks the ancient words and casts Light on it. Variel was alright for now, for he had his low-light vision that Gabe did not. Aneira was practical enough to work from priority. (Since she can only have one light spell active at any one time, Aneira holds off 'lighting' Variel's arrow. Unless of course, someone else can undertake a Light spell.)

The elk continues and says How did you plan on accomplishing such a daring feat?

Aneira:
Something's not right. The elk doesn't seem to actually be talking. Someone else is talking either through the elk or very near to him.

Gabryjel watches thing unfold from the back of the crew.

He looks at the elk with real wonder and something akin to awe.

They say the Woodsman has many guises; some say he sometimes garbs himself as a Stag… but hang on a minute… this is an Elk; what the heck does that mean?

With no real knowledge of what this may mean, he merely lifts his knocked arrow into the ready position and casually aims it the elk, just in case.

Great, probably piss it off and ruin our chances, but what else can I do? I’m no good with words…

Not trying to ruin our Diplomacy here, but I figure with my charisma the way it is; Gabryjel would be “un-diplomatic” enough to do this.

He looks over at Variel, his eyes flicking over the rest of the group.

"It's easy enough for elf-folk to see good in the dark; but snow's not really the same thing. Besides, even in the best circumstances they only see about maybe thirty feet farther than most of us men-folk types," he says, his fingers absently twisting in his hair as he frowns at the others.

"You'd think someone else may want to be a better shot and all, too - but hey; I can't make folk do what they don't want to do," he says with a shrug.

"Anyhow, thanks again," he says with nod, then moves back to the rear of the line.

Aneira was disturbed by what she had noticed: the elk's lips were not moving as he spoke. She slowly lifted her free hand to stay her companions from drawing any closer, hoping to protect them even in her current state of silence. She turned her head sideways for a second and looked at Variel, mouthing "Not right" (in Elven), hoping he could read her lips well enough by now.

Aneira 'casually' walked a few steps sideways (at a distance from the creature) to get a better look around the elk, to determine who may be speaking through him or near to him. Could this be the handy work of the evil Fey? Or some kind of magic?

Variel has not cast light as Immortal indicated that we still had 3-4 hours of daylight left, thus no need for the spell at this time.

Catching the tenseness in Aneira, Variel posture changes instantly. Instead of looking at the woods and possible threats from their, he focuses on the elk more acutely.

Inwardly, Aneira gave a quick sigh of relief, that Variel had understood her non-verbalised concern. Now, that her husband had moved and was standing beside her, she felt more at ease for she had faith in his protection and skill.

Aneira waited with a practised serene expression on her face for the white elk to answer her questions.

Still in the process of making icons for all the characters and the enemies so bear with me please. As such there is no map at this time. Just assume that every square for movement costs double and there is not intervening terrain to worry about. The elk is 15ft away and everyone is together to listen to the conversation. That all being said...

Variel recalls that there were rumors flying around of a stag that could talk and trick hunters into following false trails. This is not confirmed however as no one has actually seen the stag talk.

Beck, the elk seems like a normal elk but appears to have the gift of speech. Perhaps an awakened elk or a companion at one time would explain the phenomenon.

Aneira, you think you managed to quell the "elk's" suspicions with your smooth talk but at the last second you sense a hostility overcoming your diplomatic means. As such you are able to act in the surprise round.

GM stuff:

Aneira 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18
Variel 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
Beck 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Gabe 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
Venja 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
XanXan 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22

C1 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
C2 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7

Compared to the Wrath of the Righteous campaign this group has amazing init modifiers. The worst is a +2.

The elk looks ready to charge you Aneira and you have no real idea of where the hostile presence is. Your action in the surprise round, then the foes surprise round, then the group is up for round 1.

GM – I’m just trying to get a feel on how you’re going to run this game.

So far Aneira was able to used Bluff and Diplomacy and Beck used Sense Motive and Perception; but Beck was not able to Sense anything or Perceive anything – but Aneira was, enough so she could act before the surprise round? Also, although Aneira moved from the group to get a better look – I thought she was only a few feet from them? So wouldn’t that mean the elk would have to suffer AoO from Beck, Sheena and Variel if it formally charged her?

Sorry, I’m mainly trying to get a visual on what’s going on here; and I’m trying to figure things out.

Thanks for any clarification on this stuff!

FYI Nice new Avatar :)

Aneira's initial sense motive was high enough to detect the deception. No one else made the correct DC to gain that insight. She is not going before the surprise round, she had a higher init then the enemies in the surprise round, thus allowing her to go first in the surprise round. In a surprise round everyone that has not acted is flat footed and therefore can not take AOO's. Hope that clarifies things for you. Things will be better next combat as I will have an actual map with icons for a visual.

No worries - I'm just a little bored without the chance to do anything.

Oh well, I guess I can be patient - I'm just ready for action is all :)

Aneira had moved around the Elk, at a wise distance (for she sensed something was wrong and was wary), as mentioned in my last postings. She isn't that close to the Elk -- so the 15 ft works.

Surprise Round

Aneira was confounded by the mixed signals and feelings she was receiving from the White Elk. Could someone be controlling it? She did not know. It looked like it was going to charge her and she decided to slow it down by wounding it. If it proved to be innocent, she would attempt to heal it later. Erastil forgive me if I am wrong.

Lifting her loaded crossbow (it was readied earlier before they came across the Elk), she decides to fight defensively (as a standard action) and fires at the Elk, hoping she isn't making a mistake in attacking the creature at the expense of the true culprit/s.

Ranged Attack with crossbow: 1d20 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (19) + 1 - 4 = 16
Damage, if hits: 1d8 ⇒ 5

Confirm Crit: 1d20 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (13) + 1 - 4 = 10
Damage, if hits: 1d8 ⇒ 3

Her AC in this surprise round is 16 due to the +2 dodge bonus since she's fighting defensively as a standard action. I hope this is right? I'm sure one of you will let me know either way.

Aneira, I was speaking specifically about the fact that if the elk did a "charge" action against you he would have been hit by at least an AoO by Variel as he (Variel) moved from the group to stand next to you. Also, your earlier posts didn't make your position relative to the rest of the company or the elk very clear regarding distance and feet; you had indicated that you - "casually" moved a few steps sideways - so I'm just trying to figure out your position. It's not really a big deal, but the thing is, right now I'm trying to get as much as detail as possible to sort of remember where everyone is relative to the threat.

I'm just trying to understand where everyone is before I act is all.

FYI - nice shot with the bow! That was pretty pimp, and if you were able to go before the elk was able to act, you may be able to hit it while it's Flat-Footed :)

Thanks, Gabe. Now, let's hope Aneira doesn't get skewered on the giant antlers of the Elk. ;)

Nah; if it's really difficult terrain that will effect the elk's "charge" (I hope). But I guess we'll see what happens, though... :)

GM stuff:

1d20 ⇒ 8
1d6 ⇒ 6
1d20 ⇒ 19

The crossbow thuds into the elk puncturing a sizable hole near the lung. The wound is great but not enougr to drop the elk. In retaliation the elk charges you missing you with it great horns by a mere inch. Behind the elk where it was moments before, a fey appears casting a spell at Variel. The weapon the Variel has his hand on starts to shrink noticeably before Variel masters control of it and it snaps back into its correct size.

the elk does not seem hindered by the difficult terrain FYI.

Group up with elk in melee with Aneira and fey 15 ft away and 5 ft up in the air.

Does Variel get an AoO since he was standing right next to Aneira; that may effect my action if he does...

DM Variel:

Clarification question, please.

Why is it currently difficult terrain? That sounds like a silly question and I know it was heavy snow earlier and am wondering if that's the reason or something else?

Aneira has the Child of Winter Revelation which allows her to move across regular snow without penalty, and heavy snow costs her only 2 squares of movement instead of 4. She can move across icy surfaces without penalty, and never needs to make Acrobatics checks to run or charge on ice. She leaves no trail in ice or snow, and cannot be tracked (she may choose to leave a trail if she so desires). So, if it is heavy snow that is causing the difficult terrain, is the movement the same for her as it is the others currently or no?

Variel would only get an AoO if the Elk moved OUT of a threatened square, and if Var was next to Aneira and the Elk charged her, then the Elk would not have provoked as it only entered a threatened square and none of them have Reach

Beck shouts back, "Shoot the Fey!" as it is at range, he then takes a swing at the Elk.

Assuming we are still in single file, Beck uses his his move to approach the elk and get to one side, taking his cudgle in both hands and slamming it down hard

1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21
for 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10

and Sheelah slinks around to the other side of her prey and takes a bite of it
1d20 + 2 + 2 - 1 ⇒ (14) + 2 + 2 - 1 = 17 +2 flank -1 Power Atack
for 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5

Beck
Move approach Elk to force Sheelah to flank
Standard: hit it
Free: trivial check for Attack command

Sheelah
Move: approach elk
Standard: bite with PA and a flank.

Gabryjel will knock a Cold Iron arrow and shoot the flying Fey.

Attack with bow
1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 4 + 1 = 23

If it hits –
1d8 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 + 2 = 10

Thank you Aneira. The difficult terrain is due to the snow. If you have some ability that allows you to move along snow terrain with no penalty then it s not difficult terrain.

The combined efforts of Beck and Sheelah bring down the towering elk. It lays on the ground twitching as its life blood pools out. The hot blood melting the snow with a hiss.

Seeing his wife safe for the moment with the elk down, Variel draws his rapier and moves up next to the fey threatening it. Thank you Beck for helping protect my wife's life. I will not forget this.

standard to draw weapon
move 15 ft through difficult terrain next to fey.

Sorry , I'm having trouble with the map.

no map at this time as I have not gotten all the icons made yet. Just assume you can be anywhere as long as it is 15ft away from the fey with the snow causing it to be difficult terrain.

Between the arrow and the bolt piercing the body of the fey, if falls to the ground. Before its last breath expires you all can here it say, You may have won now, cough, blood splatter, cough but nothing you do is going to prevent the eternal winter from coming upon you. gasp, cough gurgle I will be avenged by my brethren.

That was quick. Nice damage all. I should have given another level to the fey. Next time, hahahahahahah...

DM Variel, The White Elk charged Aneira once, she wounded it and then what happened? Did it run away or is it waiting to the side, lying down due to its internal injuries? In Variel's post he said 'safe at the moment with the elk down'...

"Xan, from what I could see earlier, the Elk's lips were not moving as it spoke to me. That is when I grew worried something was wrong and asked it directly why it spoke in such a way. It did not answer me. But if it is alive, I would like to save such a magnificent creature."

Turning to Beck, "You have a particular sensitivity with animals, Beck, do you think you could attempt to calm it, so I may examine its wounds and perform a healing?" Wild Empathy, please? Finding Venja's eyes, "Venja, you care for our animals in Heldren, can you advise what you would do now?"

Aneira with soothing, gentle words, approaches the Elk cautiously so as to not spook it into charging again or injuring itself further.

Diplomacy with Elk: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (20) + 12 = 32

"Lord Elk, please forgive me for wounding you during our battle with the evil Fey. If you can speak and would allow me, I would heal you before we continue on with our journey."

Aneira moves closer and waits for an answer, if any is forthcoming, hoping Beck and Venja are there beside her, aiding her.
