"I just thought it was pretty comfortable... wonder what it does... Didn't put me to sleep or anything. Ah well, I'm sure someone'll figure it out." Seijiro accepts Flynn's help, especially since he seems to be struggling a little with his tools (that is, of course, assuming we don't have keys)

"Not expecting a lot in here yanno, since Harrigan took most everything of value when he stripped her bare, but if they were planning on a refitting this ship, there might be just enough in here to do that. That'd be nice."

I smile grimly at Seijiro's comments as I move to assist him...

Right, I did ask for the keys, but there may not have been any. If there was, cool; if not - than I'll try to aid Seijiro in "Disabling".

1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13

It looks like I was successful in "Aiding". But please disregard if this is not needed.

"Who can say what the hammock does? Even so - we shall see."

Just waiting for the results of the Identify Check. Here's hoping that the "21" will be successful.

"Even so; mister Plugg was under mister Harrigan's orders. Mister Harrigan sent him and our own people to this ship for a purpose."

"Yet from the time mister Plugg planned to rebel against his former captain, it is likely he took steps to make sure he would be successful. It is therefore possible that when he moved his goods and gear across the ship he may have smuggled some private dainties from under mister Harrigan's notice."

I tug on my lower lip and think carefully.

"Mister Plugg would have needed to refit the ship - that was his plan. But mister Harrigan did not intend for that to happen, and would not have given mister Plugg the resources to refit the ship."

"I think that mister Plugg would have taken those resources. I think he would have gathered together what coin he needed and stolen it from mister Harrigan. After all, if mister Plugg had the location of the harbor and notes on it, he would have certainly known that he would have to pay a fee for refitting the ship; such labor is not free."

"Mister Plugg would not have attempted to sail for the port and refit the ship without at least carrying the right amount of coin for the venture. I think, then, if we search the ship we shall at least find enough coin for the purpose of refitting this ship. For if mister Plugg did not even have the coin to do the job, why would he bother to attempt the journey?"

I turn a give Seijiro a shy smile.

"At least, that is what I would do if I were to pirate this ship and then sail for a port to pay the harbor master for a refitting; namely - I would make sure I have enough to pay for the job when I arrived."

"Of course, I may be wrong, but I am hopeful."

Hoping that the discussion is mostly wrapping itself up since we are moving on to the issues of the chests, Variel waits until the chests are opened before he speaks again. Flynn, I know that you are willing to go speak to the crew. However you said it yourself that Dhaavan has a way with words. Should we have him be the one to speak to the crew and inform them of what we are doing next. Namely, he tells them who is holding what position, that our course is set to reoutfit the ship and take on supplies. While Dhaavan takes care of the crew, Jiro and you can take stock of our supply situation so we know what we need once we reach port. Valeros will be up top with Dhaavan overseeing the workings of the ship. As its a calm day there will be no problem if I take the helm until you and Jiro are done with the inventory. Also Jiro and you can look at any maps and logs down here without worrying about any of the crew bothering you. Does this sound like a plan gentlemen? If so, then I think our crew is waiting for us up top.

Not trying to rush anyone at all but trying to answer some of Flynn's comments and Jiro's at the same time. Dhaavan or Valeros please chime in if anything is incorrect.

"That's all fine with me, but remember I'm new at this, and I'm sure I can take an inventory of what we have. Estimating what we need when we reach port depending on crew size and so forth is not exactly something I know much about. I wish we had an experienced quartermaster on board, but I'll do my best with Flynn's help. Maybe some paper, pen and ink to keep inventory on would come in handy."

"As for checking out the maps and logs, be glad to do that too. I'm sure Flynn and I can read the charts and probably the captain's log as well. Pilots often keep their logs in code for security, but I doubt either Plugg or Scourge was a true pilot so they probably don't have such a log in their possession."

Male Human Guns. 1 (Mysterious Stranger), Fighter 1 (Lore Warden), Bard 6 (Archaeologist) - Barbarian 1 (Urban) Mythic (Champion) (AC 20 / HP 82 / F +9, R + 10, W +7 / Ini + 3 / Perc. +16)

I'm pretty much ready to go; right now we're still waiting on the details in the cabin which we've just searched, and at least the results of the "Identify Check" on the magic hammock - to determine what it can do, and what the value is.

So basically, I'm just holding action until we get more details. I mean, I can social RP, but there's not much we can do until we hear more the GM, I guess.

I glance at Seijiro -

"Mister Plugg was a scoundrel, I agree on this matter. Even so; he was a high ranking member of mister Harrigan's crew. He did not rise so far simply for barbarism, I would think."

"Besides, any captain who cannot plot a course or know how to read rutters or con a vessel would be lost. Mister Harrigan picked mister Plugg for the task to sail the ship. It seems logical to assume that they had a log in their possession and mister Plugg could read it."

"Remember, too - a log is not just a mere diary. Instead, it is a record of valuable information about the places the ship has traveled. For example; this island - it's position with both longitude and latitude as well as the correct degrees and minutes should already be noted in the log."

"Yet if mister Plugg had wisdom he would have filled the log with supplemental notations about the island. For example; the position and location of the reefs; the existence of a abandoned village; the probability for undead and plague; the potential defensible fortress on the summit of that peak..."

"Were all of that noted, and the entire adventure kept in his records; if we were in these waters again... Well, that is somewhat valuable information."

I think a moment.

"For example, on the south west side of the island there was a wrecked ship. If we sailed our ship nearby and used rafts and ropes to pull out the remains - we may have the beginnings of a new ship. Nothing fancy; but I'd warrant the keel would still remain as well as most of the ship's metal parts, until rust sets in."

"And if we returned with a proper priest we might clear out the plague and undead and create a small haven for ourselves on the summit, should we need one. It was a defensible position, but for the hazards of the island."

"And of course a few simple spells could shift stone to mud and reduce the reefs on the western side into nothing and allow a full sized ship to sail in with some ease right to the edge of a comfortable port."

I sigh in contemplation.

"But in any case what is clear that mister Plugg would have been a fool to keep no records or logs of his position, previous locations, or destinations."

"And his rise with mister Harrigan suggests to me that he may have been a bully and a ruffian - but he was not a fool, though he may have done foolish things..."

Again - this is all speculation of course. We're still waiting on the GM. And I guess if Valeros wants to post something as well; like his opinions on the matter or what to do - that would be cool. But for now we just have to wait until we get more news, at least, so it seems.

We don't know what to do with the crew (as in, what is their reaction to things once we talk to them) - we're still waiting on news about the loot we're looking at now - more news about if Plugg was normal enough to take the appropriate amount of coin to refit the ship and we're about to discover it, or he somehow forgot that detail and we don't find anything else - and what is in the logbooks, if at all. I can attempt to decipher the script if we need to - assuming we need to, and assuming there are logbooks. But for now, not much more we can officially do. Unless I'm missing anything... ?

Human - (Status: normal) Varisian Sorcerer 5 (HP: 56/56, AC:21(14/19[+2]) /F:8,R:8,W:9 / MP: 5/5 / Init. +2 / Perc. +5/6(3))(Jack's Perc: +13/+15)

don't think you missed anything Flynn

Considering Variel's got his own, and Jiro's vote, Valeros and Dhaavan don't seem to have any real interest in being captain, and Flynn seems to be willing to accept it, Dhaavan will of course try to keep things goin' easy betwixt the two o' them we'll call Variel Captain? So is the Officer list acceptable?

"Alright mates, while yer chartin' our course, I'll go out there and let the crew know what's what at this point, eh? Just ta be clear, we agreed on givin the Cap'n's Hat ta Variel? Seasoned sort o' gent'll have his orders respected, but ain't gonna push hit limits?" Dhaavna asks, collecting objections regarding this decision, and confirming that the Mutineers accept the idea of having the elf pointin our way.

"Jiro'll get a handle on inventory (Quartermaster) then take the con from Variel ta get us to Blood Cove? Flynn, yea'll get a handle on the artillery (Master Gunner) and get to work on yer guns. Valeros, yea can make sure everythin's done right (Bosun), and I'll go check on how Sandara's doin wit' Ratline (Surgeon)."

"Feel like yea should talk to Rosie, if yea want her ta take on makin sure we fight ready (Master-at-Arms)." Dhaavan suggests to their would-be captain, and then turns to Sko and asks "Yea mind helpin out ol' FIshguts (Cook) wit the fishin and food? I for one'd really quite like ta have a celebratory feast for all our crew considerin. Try ta make them what was loyal to Plugg re-consider any ill they may harbor. Hearts and minds, an' all."

WIth Variel about this item:

Considering variel's captainship
Dhaavan will approach Variel in private at some point during the preperations responding "Yeah, i can whip up a headband for yea. Were yea ta come up wit a spell what can actually do that, even for a short time it may make things a mite easier on me. But what i want is access to the Captain's quarters ta use as my lab. We got the Captain's Cabin, the officer's Quarters, an' there's a few o' us, , and the crew's space below decks, none o' which'll do. Now it honestly don't much matter ta me if yea want ta keep the room ta yerself as sleeping quarters an such, but as for enchantin' this is the most suited room on this boat an' I'll need a good spot ta do my work right." Listening to Dhaavan's request Variel may note that there was not a single question posed, but Dhaavan does need a good spot to ply his trade, and craft. Not that he's giving orders to his captain, mind you but is totally pragmatic about the necessities of the craft and doesn't think he needs to stand on ceremony when in private, especially as Variel's First Mate. I mention these details as they may set the tone of the relationship. He's a 17 year old kid with o issues telling his seior how things are, if that's the way things are, but is still very polite about it, even considering his casual dialect and dismissal of formal speech. a calm and friendly smile graces the boy's fae, free of the usual teasing and playful snideness, but rather stands out in that the sorcerer actually seems comfortably unguarded for what may be the first time Variel's seen.

Will have things to say about the hammock when its powers are revealed!

Male Human Guns. 1 (Mysterious Stranger), Fighter 1 (Lore Warden), Bard 6 (Archaeologist) - Barbarian 1 (Urban) Mythic (Champion) (AC 20 / HP 82 / F +9, R + 10, W +7 / Ini + 3 / Perc. +16)

Dhaavan’s good natured charm has seemed to relax me a bit, and as Seijiro and I pause from a moment from prying apart the chests, I glance at him as he moves toward the door.

”Begging your pardon, mister Dhaavan… “ I say.

Blast! When will that man give me his surname? Eh, no matter… “Mister Dhaavan” will be fine, though he may prefer the title “Sorcerer Supreme” one day instead…

I grin a moment, as if smiling at a passing thought, than continue.

”We have recently discovered this hammock here is magical in nature and are attempting to identify it. I am a bit skilled in this ability – but wondered if you and mister Nightstorm could stay a moment and assist me to solve the mysteries of its nature? Or, of course, I could assist you, instead, if you prefer."

My grin widens a moment, clearly the stress is fading from me, and now that action is before us, I seem more like my old self.

"Yet in any case, I feel that if we worked as a unit it may mean better results. I would think it would only take a moment, if you and Mister Nightstorm are willing?”

Right – so in-game/real life I want to be underway just as much as everyone. But at the same time “in-game” it’s only been a minute or two, and anyway, we can’t really interact with the crew until the GM gets back. I’m hoping if the “Detect Magic” reveals anything other than the hammock (like in one of the chests) that we can work together and identify those items as well. I think we missed out on the properties of a wand before because of bad rolls. I don’t want to miss this time. Right now I rolled a 21 for my Spellcraft – if we miss it by a few points… eh; that would suck. Anyhow, if you and Variel are willing to toss up rolls to Aid, and maybe rolls to identify things in the chests (assuming we find any thing, that is) – that would be cool if you could help with it. If you’re agreeable, that is :)

As I wait for a response, I glance around the cabin a frown a bit.

”This ship is fair enough, but it could be better contrived,” I add in a general comment.

”As it stands there are two forward areas for storage for the officers. These quarters are roughly five feet by ten feet, and there are two of them. Further – at the aft of the ship and right before the captain’s cabin there are similar chambers.”

B:6a and B:7a respectively.

”Both are currently protected by stairs leading up to the fore and aft decks. However, with a little work and some help, I may be able to rework those parts of the ship. Specifically – I may be able to rip out the stairs, extend the storage units to ten feet by ten feet – at least in the forward part of the ship, and refinish the stairs beneath them.”

”This is somewhat less room on the main deck, but not much less. However, it would mean that the foredeck would have more room on it, as well as the aft deck, depending on our needs. But most importantly; the extra room that was created under the fore deck, and potentially the aft deck where the storage areas are could be used instead for some private work space for those of us who want to craft items.”

”After all, mister Dhaavan, in time you’ll want privacy and a little peace to prepare more potent advantages for our vessel. A private lab or office that is yours alone to work with may do wonders for your work, as it would eliminate any distractions.”

”At the same time, if we want to keep more room on the main deck, then perhaps it would be better to simply create a similar work space in the main hold? That could be easier to create, in any case."

That is B:12 on the main map of “The Man’s Promise”.

”Unlike the suspicious mister Plugg, we may not need as much room for storage. After all; we’ll be needing at the least less room for water storage, if we create fresh water each day for the crew to drink, rather than relying on taking up space with barrels that have to be refilled at an island filled with disease,” I add with a dry grin.

”But in any case, I have no issue with being a ship’s gunner. But in my youth I learned with my uncle the way of carpentry. I can craft some small offices or work places for those who need them, if you are agreed that such a place would be acceptable? Again, I doubt it would take much room. Perhaps only ten square feet, or perhaps fifteen by ten? I don’t know how much office space mister Dhaavan will need, or if we ever have a priest, how much they may require for a shrine or prayer room.”

”But it is an option…”

I glance at Dhaavan.

In Infernal:

”Fear not. I have not forgotten thy courtesies in the past. It is a small thing I can do for you, but it shall be done, if thou would have it so.”

Flynn I tossed up a spellcraft earlier and got a result of 26 on the hammock. Still waiting from Immortal for the details.

That sounds like a mighty fine idea Flynn, but I think we should wait till after we get the ship refitted as who know what space and requirements they need or alterations they are going to do. It may be that your improvements will be done already or that they are not practical afterwards.

As for an area for Dhaavan to work, well. I was discussing that with him just now while you two were working on the chests. He believes that this room here would work quite well. I agree with him as well. What I see happening is that Dhaavan and I share this room. Outside of sleeping (8 hours) he can experiment and work part of the day while I relieve Jiro. When Dhaavan is busy, I can use the room to meet with the officers and discuss matters. Thus we both have the privacy we need yet not waste valuable space on the ship.

Human - (Status: normal) Varisian Sorcerer 5 (HP: 56/56, AC:21(14/19[+2]) /F:8,R:8,W:9 / MP: 5/5 / Init. +2 / Perc. +5/6(3))(Jack's Perc: +13/+15)

"I'm not sure that expanding the storage closets is really going to be quite enough. This room has space to walk, space for magical diagrams, tables and chairs. It helps to have the room that i need. I don't mind a few distractions, and won't need complete silence, but what i do need is space. I feel like outfitting the ship for a battle may be a better use of effort, although when we get another boat, I'll need my own private study." He mentions to Flynn.

"Although you did mention a Fighting Top, which could be useful for me to climb and start slinging summons from! Maybe only 20 ft up tho 'cause of the limited range of summons but still gimme a little protection and freedom to move around up there." he suggests, glancing at the other casters to see if they'd benefit from something like that.

”Oh make no mistake, I was not planning on making anything at this time. At the very least, I do not have the materials for such projects until we picked up the needed lumber and nails in port. It was merely conjecture to pass the time.”

I glance around me, scanning the dimensions of the room itself.

”This room is roughly twenty-five by twenty feet… give or take via the angle of the hull. That’s roughly five hundred square feet, give or take.”

”In the same room you’ll need bunks and a place to set up your gear for crafting. As for a good table for a conference, I would wager that could take up a bit of room, too, not to mention the chairs around it.”

”Extending each forward closet space from to ten by ten area gives you an additional one hundred square feet per closet, or roughly forty percent of this cabin. More if we make them larger, and that is only the forward areas. In addition, it doesn't compromise any of the ship at all, as it only takes up space on the main deck, which is otherwise empty of anything.”

”Meanwhile, of course, the other advantage is that the forward deck and the stern deck will be larger and wider. It allows more space for artillery, and a better staggering of the men for action stations.”

At this time I just shrug my shoulders, feeling a tension in the muscles.

"But it matters not to me either way. I am not eager to spend time on such projects, but merely offered the service to be friendly. If you do not wish the service, I do not mind. It is less work for me to worry about."

I hear Dhaavan's comments about the fighting top and nod.

”I will certainly begin sketches for a fighting top at the height you request. Of course, we cannot truly work on that project until we have materials, but it is something we could give thought to, as we are still planning projects.”

I glance around the room, curious to know what the chests hold.

”Meanwhile, of course, I will likely be constructing my own chambers below deck than for crafting things. There are certain things I can make that I will be working on which will likely need delicate handling, and as such, as few distractions as possible.”

”But I suppose I can attend to those details when we reach the port and I am able to pick up the needed lumber.”

Yeah, not much really to say here, just trying to social RP until the GM is good to go.

Hospitality Hammock: A luxurious crimson silk hammock embroidered with gold thread and gold fringed tassels, a hospitality’s hammock is a beauty to behold, but no self-respecting seaman would ever be caught using it. Aside from the hammock’s considerable looks, a single night’s rest in it eliminates any sign of seasickness (see page 26). Additionally, a hospitality’s hammock is so comfortable that those who sleep in it for a full 8 hours regain hit points as if they had an entire day of bed rest. Climbing into or out of the hammock is a full-round action. A successful DC 5 Dexterity check reduces this to a move action. Retail: 5000gp

Good to see you home!

Both Perception and Disable Device were used. If it helps, I already had Plugg's keys.

Combined total for "Perception" was 22.

Combined total of Disable Device was 21. Me and Seijiro worked together.

You are able to get the chest open...when a blast of lightning shoots out of it barely missing Horatio and Seijiro. They turn around and look at the scorch mark in the wall, their hair standing on end, before slowly turning back to the chest.

Inside the chest are various items, from jewelry to ivory carvings to gem studded buttons.

You find about 2 points of Plunder in the chest. Even though plunder usually takes up a lot more space than this, for this first foray into plunder it's fine.

Not paying too much attention to Flynn and Jiro, Variel was in discussion with Dhaavan. His attention was immediately drawn to the two of them, or what he thought would be left of the two of them, when the flash of lightning went off inside the cabin. Eyeing that Flynn a d Jiro are alright, Variel tries to ease the tension. Glad to see you alright Flynn. I would hate to have to fix that scorch mark myself. Looks like Plugg wasnt as much of a fool as some thought. Gems catching his eye, That is some haul there men. Looks like that could go a long way to helping us refit this ship. That with what we found on the island will do wonders. Maybe get us some better sails and such even.

Looking over plunder rules quick before add more.

Once the loot is calculated Variel will turn to Flynn again. One other thing I was thinking about Flynn. There are two ballistae on the stern castle. Do you think it is wise and possible to move one up to the bow? That way we have the ability to use one for attack and one for defense. I have no skill in the engineering aspects of siege engines and you have a wide range of experience.
Turning to everyone else as well, What do you think if it is possible? Seems like a good idea to me.

When Flynn asks a out the hammock, Aye Flynn i know what it is even if I am surprised to see one. At hammock be a Hospitality Hammock. Not only do they aid in removing seasickness, but they do wonders for the body after a long hard day. I heard those hammocks are only for the soft of stomach. I would think you would find that more in a traveling dignitaries room than in a captains.

Dhaavan I think you have the right of it as far as a celebration is in order. Food and drink tonight, but I would hold off sharing the bulk of the plunder with the crew. If any ask, tell them that we have enough to refit the ship once we get to port. After all we don't want Harrigan to recognize us and come for revenge. Once we have changed her look, then we'll see about getting ourselves some plunder and loot. If paying the crew comes in the form of expending plunder though then by all means I think the crew should get one of the plunder to split amongst themselves.

I consider the question on the ballista.

"It's certainly possible, and I agree. It is a good decision."

"Traditionally the weapons are best amidship, rather than fore or aft decks. A broadside of any artillery is a traditional way of inflicting the most damage."

"Of course, in this case we hardly have a broadside with so few weapons. And if we attempted to use that tactic; we'd give ourselves a much wider target."

"Normally I'd agree to leave the weapons spread along the length of the ship - one in after and foredeck. But if we keep our primary weapons to the foredeck, it means if we attack another vessel we have two points of fire from the forward bow."

"If the enemy seeks to repel us with weapons and we are advancing with our nose first, so to speak, we can present the narrowest target to an enemy ship as we "charge" her; until we're in range for boarding; then swing about."

"If we keep a balista in the aft deck, that means that we cannot use it while "charging" an enemy ship. Also, by keeping a gun crew right next to the tiller, it may draw too much attention to the pilot if an enemy vessel tries to knock out our attack capabilities."

"In short, I'd move the two weapons to the front of the ship. It'll be safer for the pilot, and give extra firepower as we charge an enemy. We can have the sailors get that done by Four Bells in the first Dog Watch."

"I'll want a four man crew for ship's weapons, for now. I know a light balista only needs one many normally, but I'd prefer to have extra's in case of a mishap or to aid each other. The bolts are awkward to load."

"Of the men who are competent, I'll select the four and have them begin work on moving the balista in about an hour."

"After the preparations for the task begin, I'm retiring below to work on some projects. For now, I'm going to see to the stores below and pick the lads I want for the task. Meanwhile gentleman - good afternoon."

I stand and bow politely and then leave the others to their tasks.

"Begging your pardon Mister Dhaavan, but I think that is a terrible plan," I say with a slight frown.

"We are a new vessel with no experience in these waters and little to offer in the way of real strength. Our ship is need of repair after the attacks from the Gridnylow sea-witch; or whatever that was - never mind the fact that we are poorly armed as a vessel."

"I would think that the last thing we need to do while our ship is being repaired is to inform the populace of a township dedicated to supporting men whose lifestyles involve theft and murder that we have more wealth than we know what to do with; a severely battered ship that will lay in harbor during its repairs without many guards, and at least four of our crew suspect in the form of pressed men from Rahadoum."

I wave my hand impatiently.

"Yes, they were not pressed as we were; but truly, what choice do they have? They may at the least decide to desert when we reach town, or not. But if it's a chance for me to gamble my life, I would not want to put those men to the test."

"In short, I would rather not inform the populace that we have so much wealth. They may decide that we are worth pirating while our ship is in harbor and our men are in taverns drinking, waiting for its repair."

"Would it not be more prudent to at least wait until we've established ourselves a bit more before we inform others of our wealth?"

I sigh -

"Apologies for any hot words, and of course, it is only a suggestion. Yet I fear anything that would make us an attractive target."

"Now we want to be cautious," Dhaavan asks Flynn, leaning in with a raised eyebrow and a cocked head, giving him a friendly chuckle after caling the man out. Nodding he responds, "Yea got a point, tho. But once the ship is repaired we gotta recruit some more crew, and that'd best be done showin off how successful we is, tellin of what we been doin. We blow what's left of the booty to celebrate getting underway and bost crew moral, try to recruit some muscle with the promise of similar reward, and get out the port before anybody's got time to decide to turn on us! We keep our treasures to ourselves, but pass out some o' what Plugg's got what don't go to refittin this here dingy, yeah?"

Basically i want to take advantage of the infamy rules to actually get some, and since we probably aren't going to be able to get a great rate on the plunder turning it into gold, we may as well burn it on Infamy instead.
It'd be really silly if that system were in place and then using it at all gets us robbed. and even if it does, that's more exp and treasure! =P

I sort of forgot about Dhaavan's response to the food, he certianly smelled it once it was put in front of him, looking at the others as they turned their heads in disgust. Ret-con with Dhaavan.

In Infernal:

"Do you like it Mister Dhaavan," I say with a somewhat shy smile, my eyes lifting up under heavy lids to watch him sup upon it.

"I hope so... yes, truly. I labored hard on the task."

"Would that our stores had something white to drink with it. White wine would compliment it well, I think. Though I added rum to the broth. The sugar in the rum did much to sweeten the meat; and I fear it needed it. After all - this meat was both tough, and far from sweet."

Upon reflection, you believe that it tastes like a dry and rather tough type of swine... though certainly you believe the meat has been well tenderized.

This may suggest that I am truly a considerate cook; to tenderize the meat so well...

Thus endeth the ret-con...

"I have always wished to be cautious, and always desired ventures which used safety rather than brash acts. At least - well, to be fair, yes - there were times my mind strayed from such clarity, I will admit. But in those rare instances, that deviation was a regrettable circumstance beyond my control."

"Now, whatever means we have for recruitment, I suggest both caution and some form of observation, though it's only a suggestion."

"After all, we may elect to change our strategies somewhat once we examine the caliber of the men. For all we know the lads on the island may be rather good natured rogues with a penchant for a bit of excitement and some bold adventures."

"On the other hand; there may well be others who smile to one's face and then in the still hours of the night slip from their bunks to open the veins of their comrades and steal from them their essence in some black ritual to gods before gods from the ancient realms beyond the Planes."

I shake my head.

"While of course, one set is quite acceptable - we'll certainly need to watch out for the others. After all; we can't have the sort of crewmembers on board who could impede our true purposes with a lack of unity to the type of men we truly are, no matter what our reputation may suggest to the contrary," I say with a sage nod agreeing with mister Dhaavan's sentiment.

"But of course, I suppose only time will tell with regards to the men we encounter on this venture."

After the message from Dhaavan, Variel will nod to the crew. Once done, he will make his way to Rosie. Rosie, I have a matter to discuss with you. Come in so we can talk. As you just heard, changes are being made and new people are into positions of authority. With those new positions, we are still looking for people to fill those needed roles. Your name came to mind for a potential candidate for master at arms. What say you to joining the officers and taking over those duties?

Seijiro changes back to his human form and goes about his duties of accounting for everything of value on the ship with a smile on his face and a little humming of sea chanteys from time to time. Some of them are strange and not in 'inner sea' keys of music, so sound strange to western ears. Still, they have their own eerie beauty. Others, though, are familiar local songs too. Every once in a while he even breaks into verbal song and sings a few lines softly to himself, and it is evident that singing is not his forte. He's much better with his harmonica than he is at actual vocals.

perform sing untrained: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 1 = 13

He doesn't seem to mind however that his singing isn't perfect, as he is doing it for himself right now... just expressing his enjoyment of his new freedom and autonomy.

He takes a break from time to time to mingle with the new crew (the Rahadoumi and the ones who used to be loyal to Plugg and Scourge) and try to gauge their attitudes about the change in regime. He'll talk to them frankly and openly about the changes and try to encourage them to put out their best efforts if they are interested in keeping their berths on this new venture.

He's basically trying to establish a baseline (after all attitudes may change over time before we reach the Squibs). This baseline would basically be of who is interested in staying on with the ship, who wants off at the first opportunity and why, that sort of thing. Encouraging them to stay if they are good workers and worth keeping is Dhaavan's job really, Seijiro is just curious where we are starting out with them. He'll report his 'findings' to Dhaavan.

At the sound of a strange word, Jack flits from Dhaavan and basically disappears for the rest of the day. He will bounce back and forth between the Rahadoumi and Plugg's toadies listening into their conversations for discontent and untrustworthyness, spying on the two groups for most of the day.

Perception: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (5) + 12 = 17

Dhaavan is more flashy, but still subtle about his information gathering. He walks the ship like Plugg used to, but encourages the whole crew, assisting with magic Prestidigitation, Mage Hand as he observes how the crew works and interacts.
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (9) + 13 = 22 Gather Information to determine attitude.
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11 to determine authenticity of said attitude...

As the afternoon progresses, I move quietly near Dhaavan, and whisper something in his ear in Infernal –

In Infernal:

”You are seeking allies or enemies among our crew? Be watchful – mister Jape, mister Tate and miss Bansion still seem a bit… hostile.”

”They may need… convincing, of our dominion as officers.”

I turn and leave him quickly, pulling out a small notebook.

I watch the crew and approach four of the members throughout the revelry.

Anyone watching me would have noticed I approached Conchobar, Shivikah and Jak. I speak to them relatively quickly and make some notations in my journal after talking to them.

Dhaavan...Dhaavan that is a good idea. Having a dedicated area for the sick and infirm is nice, but actually having something to aid in ones recovery is great for morale. As long as we don't need to sell it to supplies then I would promote the fact that we have such items. In my opinion this would help get people to join our crew as we make sure our crew is healthy and fit.Perjaps after Flynn has time he can construct a work area in the middle hold. Perhaps he can attach the hammock to the foremast and bow to hold someone. As many projects as we have for him, when we get to port we might want to find him an assistant.

Jiro...As you were going through supplies and cataloging everything, did you see a compass, astrolabe, or compass? If not perhaps we should purchase those as well once we arrive at Rickety's.

So if we put Flynn in the Hammock he'll be fine in the morning, or if we toss him Sandara's third Restoration, and he can just sleep he'll be fine. WHat we need is to get them Heal checks for the +4 to cure the disease, and then make those saves tomorrow and the next day. but that doesn't require bed-rest.

What I was wondering was if you or Flynn wanted the first 8 hours of rest and to use the hammock. I figure I might be up in the night at the helm, so I can rest whenever one of you guys get up. Either that or Jiro takes the helm at night and one of you rest now.

For now I am working on my crafting projects when I am able.

During the off-moments from those projects, I'll be instructing the three members of the ship I mentioned before on techniques and methods for arming and using ballista.

Meanwhile, I will attempt to work on a peg-leg for our sturdy halfling.

Please let me know what needs to happen from my specifically, and I will do what I can.

Dhaavan - you should have already received my crafting list for later; but I just wanted to mention it because of your request about IMing stuff.

GM - for right now, I'm just waiting for your answers to the questions I sent last week, and more details to come.

Meanwhile, I am glad you are feeling better.

The spray of the sea is exhilarating as the soon to no longer be named Man's Promise cuts through the waves. You all go about your tasks with much verve and vigor, reveling in the freedom of the day. The crew, even those with whom you had issues, attend your orders with quickness. Seijiro has been able to work out that it will take approximately two days to reach Rickety Squib's based upon your current position.

Let me know what you would like to do during this time. Again my apologies for the past week and all the issues that have happened. We are now back on track and you will be at Rickety's by tomorrow night should nothing...unpleasant...occur ;-)

As the ship heads out to sea, Variel thinks back on all that has happened in the past three days. Not only did he finds clues and hidden gems relating to his past but he helped overthrow the men who held him effectively prisoner on the ship. In along to that, the men who he is with felt he had enough leadership abilities to be named captain.

Now that responsibility is on his shoulders, Variel also must weigh the condition of the crew and officers. As such, his first order of business is to make sure that Flynn, Valeros and himself get the rest they need to defeat this disease that they have. Although there is much work for Flynn in training the crew in the ways of the ballistae and working the bones of the ship to provide a sick bay, Variel makes sure that Flynn gets the rest he needs. Using the resources the best effect, Variel tries to get Flynn Valeros and himself to each get 8 hours in the healing hammock for the next couple of days.

When not resting, Variel is at the helm spelling Jiro or in his quarters. While there, he is either meeting with the officers if they have problems or concerns, or familiarizing himself with the maps, logs, and journals that Plugg kept.

As the captains quarters are spacious, Variel will be sharing he quarters with Dhaavan. This will give him the space he needs for his crafting while providing as quiet and secure an area as possible. The rest of the officers will be in the officers quarters and crew below decks. Day and night shift as appropriate to get to Rickety's unless we do not have to enough crew. If so second priority after refitting the ship is to find able bodied crew.

Since it seems that Bilbo might be a barbarian and have the master at arms position, Variel would not approach Rosie yet.

What are the rules for influencing the crew right now, as an officer, cause that is mainly what Dhaavan would try to be doing through out the trip, boosting moral and loyalty.

I'll toss a quick re-cap of Dhaavan's actins during the day so you don't miss anything.

Seijiro spends some time, not only with the charts and logs, but doing inventory, feeling out the crew's attitude a little, and sometimes just enjoying the sea air and the salt spray while standing on deck doing a little bit of nothing between other tasks. So as not to distress the rest of the crew, he stays in human form most of the time, changing to his natural humanoid fox form when in private with other officers, who already know about his alternate form.

IF there's enough food and drink on board, and IF we have the celebration that was discussed, he'll make sure Fishguts gets whatever he needs in the way of supplies and while he'll join in the revelry with some music from his harmonica and a little dancing, as he's done up until now, he avoids having anything alcoholic to drink.

perform: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22

Not having any idea how to keep account books and such, he'll come up with his own simple system of keeping inventory for the time being.

Perhaps if we he can get a little guidance when we get to Rickety Squib's from an experienced quartermaster he can get a crash course in such things, like accounting and inventory management.

On the first day, Dhaavan gave a speech to the crew, introducing the officers, making a really big show of things via magical augmentation, letting the crew know who was doing what as far as officers go.
He spends the day observing the crew, and checking on Moral and Loyalty, and lending a hand with some magic on occasion.
He wishes there to be a celebration as a break from the savage rule of Plugg and Scourge, and after the savage storm and fixing up the ship enough for it to make it to port.

actions are in the spoilers along with rolls that i've previously posted attached to the actions, and so forth.

Introduction to the Crew:

when their meeting is finished, Dhaavan says Well, I'll go make the announcements, yeah?"[/b] The rest can be ret-conned Dhaavan will head over to the door, casting a few spells Ghostsound ot cause a loud noise (16 yelling men volume), Mage Hand to open the door, and Prestidigitation for some flashy wind around Dhaavan. Yeah looking cool!

As the door opens there is the sound of roaring waves and rushing winds volume of 16 people yelling. Dhaavan takes a few steps out onto the deck and shouts "Alright crew, atten-tion! ?" He gives em all a big grin, as they look, watchign their reactions to his coming announcements. In a loud clear voice Dhaavan speaks plainly to the crew, "I'd like ta introduce ya to yer new Cap'n, Variel here. Now if yea got any concerns, yea come ta me, as the First Mate and I'll discuss it wit' he captain."

"Flynn here's yer Our chief Carpenter an' Master Gunner, while Jiro'll be managin supplies. Valeros is yer new Bosun, so he'll be assinin' yea ta yer tasks and makin sure yea keep busy."

"We're gettin underway and Fishguts and Sko'll be preparin' a littel somethin special for today in honor of the changes to the ship, aye mates?" Dhaavan tells the crew to get em even more excited after the fight as we start sailing.
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (16) + 13 = 29

During the day:

At the sound of a strange word, Jack flits from Dhaavan and basically disappears for the rest of the day. He will bounce back and forth between the Rahadoumi and Plugg's toadies listening into their conversations for discontent and untrustworthyness, spying on the two groups for most of the day.
Stealth: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (6) + 18 = 24
Perception: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (5) + 12 = 17
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14

Dhaavan is more flashy, but still subtle about his information gathering. He walks the ship like Plugg used to, but encourages the whole crew, assisting with magic Prestidigitation, Mage Hand as he observes how the crew works and interacts.
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (9) + 13 = 22 Gather Information to determine attitude.
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11 to determine authenticity of said attitude...

Dinner:

Dhaavan suggested breaking out the rum, and letting the crew cut loose some that evening as we are underway.

When food's ready, Dhaavan'll clap his hands and shout, "Alright mates! We pulled through the savages o' that storm and'll be at Rickety's in a couple short days so take it easy t'night cause we back to work in the mornin' right."

Perched up on a table he jokes with his mates, swapping stories from home with Jak Scrimshaw brushing up on his Varisian, and recounting some of what happened on the island to Rosie and Conchobar. He pays careful attention to the Rahadoumi and Plugg's old toadies now that it should be casual, and has jack hide out and listen in as well, flitting around the room.

After eating and taking it easy for a bit with the crew he shoots a glance at Shivikah, "How was workin the Ballista with Flynn t'day?" he teases her. "Got some steam ta blow off after this mornin's festivities" aiming to slink off with some company while the others while away the evening as they see fit.

depending on the ruling about influencing crew, That's really what Dhaavan intends to do, starting with the Rahadoumi for both days

The crew takes to your commands quickly and seems generally pleased with the new rule. You hear a few grumbles from some of Pluggs former lackeys but they seem half-hearted and by midday even those complaints have disappeared. The seas are calm and the winds are fair. It seems even the gods are pleased with your triumph over Plugg and are sending good weather to speed you on your way.

The ship handles relatively well for a merchant ship and you can feel a descent turn of speed from her, nothing overly impressive and you will certainly not be winning any regattas anytime soon without some modifications. You move into your positions and begin to coordinate the running of the ship. Variel is behind the wheel and giving an impression of calm strength. Dhaavan moves among the crew and continues to boost morale and the crews view of their new leaders. Horatio is below decks working on several projects at once as well as grilling a couple of the Rahadoumi of their knowledge of siege weapons to see if they would be good candidates to help with the manning of the ballista. Seijiro goes below and takes stock of the meager stores the crew has. Valeros tends the crew and stops by those affected by disease and after a quick check declares them free of it but says that they need to take it easy over the next 24 hours so as not to bring the sickness back.

Everyone is free of disease as a thank you for being patient with me over the last week! :-)

Continue RPing and asking questions as you need. I don't have my book with me at work and so I will update getting to Rickety's tonight.

Well, for what it's worth - I actually have not engaged the Rhadoumi sailors for that project as of yet, until I know them better. I was waiting for Dhaavan on that project. Specifically I had spoken to:

Conchobar, Shivikah and Jak

But that was all, as I am not sure what is going on via their personality/loyalty right now. But other than that, everything is right on track.

Hey, Flynn, forgot to react to the soup

at the meeting after the Mutiny:

After tasting the soup, dhaavan scrunches his face slightly and takes a sip of water, giving Flynn a glance and a shrug. When Horatio explains how the soup was seasoned, Dhaavan confesses, "I much prefer Beef, and things similar to good Varisian Venison, while this had sort of a Pig-ish kinda taste. But only a little cause it was so sweet instead of cured and salty. Not that the flavor was bad, mind yea, just not how I'm used to meat bein' prepared is all.But I appreciate the thought. I'd guess the others was just a little unsetteled in the gut by the whole cuttin up o' the dead... some folk are just plain squeemish I guess." Dhaavan's kinda picky, idn't he....

The sun rises in the morning to find Variel awake in ready for the coming day. The night sleep he got in the hammock did wonders to heal and mend his body. Added to that the relative peace and quiet of the quarters did as much to refresh his mind as the hammock did for the body. It was with relish that Variel commenced to prepare mind and body for the day. Going about his morning ritual was now rewarding since he did not have to worry about trying to keep it a secret. All in all it was a wonderful start to the day.

Once ready, Variel grabs a bit of breakfast from Fishguts through the trapdoor located in the quarters. Knowing that the stores might be a bit thin, Variel eats light. While eating, Variel will cast read magic and take a look at the scrolls found in the Grindylows cavern as well as try to determine what the wand is again.

Spellcraft wand 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18

There will be time later for a feast once we reach Rickety's. The stash of loot would go a long ways to gathering more crew and publicizing our deeds up to this point. Battling moray eels in sunken ships, skewering a Grindylow queen with one shot of a ballista, and successfully leading a mutinee are just a few of their exploits, but what people want are riches to go along with daring deeds. Hopefully Dhaavan can whip the locals into a mood where plenty of people will want to join up. That way we can be somewhat selective and make sure we get good sailors and not just warm bodies.

The day goes by quickly and Rickety's looms closer with each passing hour. The first task almost complete, Variel tries to plan for what may mentally be just as difficult a task as the mutiny was physically.

Ok that's fine. They'll help where they can. Jak shows great promise with carpentry and Conchobar has a good eye. Shivikah is quite strong and can help with the heavy lifting.
