Once my mundane purchases have been concluded, I shall return to my quarters and deposit my kit in storage.

I shall then attempt to find my comrades and see what they are up to.

Hearing the raucous laughter and ribald jests prompts me to listen a moment, but say nothing specific at this time.

Although I am personally engaged in enlarging the staff by hiring on new crew members, I am not satisfied with only one lad to the edition.

I am already aware that we have several members of the crew who are hostile to us; and beyond that I am worried about the conditions of the new sailors we picked up.

My mind flicks back to the mysterious plague that beset myself and the other few members of the crew right before the assault with the late mister Plugg. It occurs to me that closeting people in a tightly packed place like a ship – if someone is infected with an air-born pathogen – that the entire ship could have been infected by the plague and we could have all died.

Perhaps not…

Perhaps only some of the crew who possessed weaker fortitude than others would have died. But what then? If we had lost even half of our crew we may have very well been left stranded in the ocean until death attached itself to us.

We need more men if we are to pirate another vessel or take down another enemy. Men who are not officers but those who advance forward into the fray while we are behind to give orders.

I ponder the words of a former tutor of mine at the academy; a Professor Lencher, who once reminded me of a battlefield tactic – ”In chess; the pawns always go first…”

Therefore, my eyes roam the room, looking for possible allies.

I see a gnome sitting aside from the others.

His features are mysterious and unusual from what I recall of gnomes. Therefore, as he is unique, I shall approach him.

Right – so I’m going to try to talk to the new guy – if you’re there, feel free to chat.

I walk up to the new guy and speak –

”Good morrow, sir. I am called Doctor Flynn – and who may you be?” I say politely and directly to the gnome.

Shocked that someone has chosen to start a conversation with him, as most go out of their way to avoid such things, Brazazal stares at the man for a moment before smiling a slightly disturbing smile, though genuine enough. In a gravelly voice he says, "Docta Flynn is it? Got the healin' hand 'o ya. Huh...Interesting enough. Dabble in them arts a bit me self. Brazazal is what the spirits 'ave seen fit te call me so it be what it be. Now the question be why is it that a doctor would see fit to walk across this 'ere establishment an' talk ta me?"

Quick Description -

The man who stands before you is wearing a short sword on his left hip. A pistol hangs under his right arm somewhat, and another pistol is low slung on his right thigh. A whip hangs from his belt from a small hook and he is wearing a long stiletto-like dagger with strange markings on it strapped to his wrist –

That dagger is a unique metal; though probably could identify it. It is not concealed, simply held on my wrist to make it easy to reach.

Another dagger is poking from my boot, and satchel with medical supplies hangs over my chest, and small pouches are hanging from my belt around the back.

I am wearing studded leather armor, black trousers and a large blousy shirt. My hair is swept back and a large scarf or bandana hangs around my neck.

A picture of me without arms and weapons – Pic.

Ending description -

I nod pleasantly at the remark, and smile somewhat then help myself to a chair.

”Your pardon, sir. I am not simply a doctor, though I do practice that trade. Even so, my footsteps are prompted by many things; perhaps it was Fate herself which directed me to you, or simply good fortune. Yet here I am.”

I signal for a drink from one of the serving attendants and then remove a pipe from my belt and fill the bowl slowly and methodically with tobacco.

”May I?” I ask.

If you are indicate you do not favor pipe smoke, I will simply replace it in my pouch with a nod.

”My companions and I have made several journeys as of late. We encountered both grim enemies and reaped rich rewards besides.”

”Due to the unfortunate difficulties which plague any sailor or wanderer, we find ourselves in need of fresh supplies and extra hands to assist us in our travels.”

”You do not seem to be part of the local citizenry and I am wondering, if you are no native son who is bound by concerns in this place - would you prefer to take to the seas again and join us in our travels?”

When the serving girl comes I’ll happily pay to fill your drink with whatever you are having.

”But please – as my companions have already spoke about our travels in length, would you care to tell me your story? I would know more about you, for I am not familiar with your people. Tell me your tale, if you would, for I would hear it if you do not mind sharing with me.”

”And of course, if you would wish to ask more questions; please – ask me anything about my ship or companions, or myself – and if it is within my power to answer you, I shall do so happily.”

I then make myself comfortable and prepare to hear your tale, and answer any other questions you may have for me.

Having lived a better part of his life among the feral halflings of the Mwangi after leaving behind a rather large mess in Cheliax, Barzazal is quite intrigued by this foppish man. Flynn has engaged the gnomish looking fellow on conversation. I will let them talk abit before I head over. Let them have their time to talk and I will see what Flynn has learned later. He seemed interested in the stories that Dhaavan told and leaned in when he heard about the sunken ship. Perhaps we have another one ready to join the ranks of the Dread Lady. In that case I fancy a dance. Where is a lass light on her feet when you need one.

As he stands up to search the room, his eyes fall on Rain and Sko. Walking over to them Variel talks for a bit before letting them know that if they ever need passage or a job, then they just need to find where The Dread Lady is located. Clapping Sko on the back and kissing Rain's hand Variel moves on.

Finally finding a woman who is not busy Variel tries to spin her around the room but the crowd and drink hamper his abilities until Variel is forced to cut the dance short and attend to other matters. Dance 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6

Seijiro watches Variel attempt the dance and stifles a giggle at Variel's expense. Not good form to laugh at your captain when you're trying to impress potential recruits. Still it WAS funny...

He goes back to circulating through the crowd, asserting that all the tales told by Dhaavan were the honest truth, maybe even toned down a bit, as the Whale was even larger than Dhaavan reported and the grindlylow witch even more fearsome and so forth.

bluff: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16

not adding anything to the story for fear of accidentally letting slip anything we want to keep secret - just embellishing what was already told a bit.

Seijiro will chat with the patrons, especially those who seem interested in joining the crew, paying close attention to any with any accounting or quartermaster experience who might help him set up some kind of inventory system. Even if none present themselves, he'll make sure any who are interested but perhaps hesitant to approach Dhaavan or Variel get a quick introduction to one of the two officers.

”There are many jobs on a sailing vessel that we are enquiring about.”

”Firstly – we are looking for capable sailors who are able to handle themselves well with steel; and have little qualms about the particulars of what direction the edge of “Self Defense” is leveled upon.”

”This is, as you may guess, a rather mundane task fit for any lad who served time before the mast. As you may expect – the pay is minimal; lodgings and daily bread for the exchange of labor and the potential for rewards for those enterprising individuals who can distinguish themselves in more direct action.”

I watch him comfortably over the edge of my mug, sipping the drink a moment.

”Still; there are other possibilities, as you may guess.”

”I do not know what the other officers are looking for specifically; but for myself, I am interested in people with intelligence and the ability to learn and teach – lore being a passion of mine.”

”I am currently in charge of the ships defense systems; currently modest artillery – though I am seeking for more powerful means of… defending our ship.”

”I have heard tales that gnomes make excellent tinkers and smiths and moreover, they are skilled in the arts of crafting; from weapons and gear to all manner of mechanical contraptions. Of course, I will admit that having one with those skills aboard would be a great help to me personally.”

My eyes flick over the gnome a moment, taking in his features.

I see a heavy chain shirt on his small frame, and a vest over it with thick barbs sticking out. His features alone do not seem bookish in any way, rather – he has the look of a warrior.

”Even so – you do not strike me as a person who is very interested in lore; nevertheless, if you would elect to sail with us, there are many possibilities, I am sure.”

”I cannot speak to all of them, as I do not fully know of your strengths and abilities, so I have little to recommend as a member of the crew to you, other than these guesses.”

I consider his next question – about what work we perform. I ponder my response a moment, than shrug.

”There are many ways to answer your question; but I sense that you are one who prefers a direct answer, rather than innuendo.”

”Very good; our task is, as of now, to search theses seas for the possibility of reward in the form of rare and wonderful treasure, and to take such plunder for our own.”

I look a bit uncomfortable for a moment as I sip my drink, then proceed a bit briskly.

”Of course – the majority of the crew, if they desire a specific item… they will not let the niceties of law prevent them from acquiring it.”

My eyes grow frosty at this point, as if struggling with some inner issues. It would seems that I am somewhat conflicted at this decision.

Then, after a moment, I push down that inner debate, and proceed with more confidence in my voice, my answer seeming to expand to fill the space around the roots of my confidence.

”Some would suggest that we are thieves, others would call us cutthroats or villains – pirates or scoundrels as well, if you prefer. For myself? Well… for myself I see our actions in another light.”

I sip again from my drink.

”For myself, I have come to realize that the niceties of law which bind the hands of weaker individuals are not for men of true force of will or character. We are such men who refused to be shackled by mere convention.”

My voice recedes a bit during my next words, as if talking almost to myself.

”I no longer believe... That is to say, all of us agree that those legalities which are imposed upon us by the members of ruling elite that create the laws through power they achieved through conquest, deception and politicking – or the simple “right” of bloodline... such powerful people do not have the right to dictate our actions simply because they claim a title or a legal mandate.”

”No. I believe that such men may make laws to protect their own interests, but they are no different then we are, excepting that they hide behind the veil of “Proper Authority”. If their mandate was removed, they would be no different than us.”

I pause a moment, and consider the somewhat philosophical bent my words have taken, and grin suddenly.

”In other words; I – and those who I sail with – are businessmen. Our business is to earn capital, or to make profit, sometimes with disreputable means. We will continue to take any means necessary to earn capital and are resolved that we shall share our wealth with no one who has not shed sweat or blood for the coin we made. If they are poor or starving, it is their own fault for not being strong enough to earn or eat!"

"Well, at the least, that last point has been made to me by other similar entrepreneurs and businessmen when I asked them to properly define such seemingly callous ethics,” I say with a broad wave of my hand at that last statement.

But given the nature of our somewhat unusual ethics and legal policies, I ponder a moment the complications that we may one day face, given our method of earning coin, then shrug.

”Naturally, if the auspices of some big government would seek to check our attempts to earn capital in the manner which we feel to be the most profitable, never mind how it may affect those around us… Well then; we shall do everything we can to prevent such a government from telling us how to make a living, and attempting to impose their own morality on our simple business ventures.”

I then put my drink down and take long pull from my pipe. It seems that I am truly enjoying the flavor of the rich tobacco I am smoking even as I rest the palm of my hand comfortably on the butt of one of my firearms.

Hmm… not quite the party of folk I would have chosen to travel with in my youth; but it seems that the gods are eager for me to enlist with such individuals. Well then; who can resist the will of the gods?

After my long speech, I decide to switch the conversation a moment into something more relaxed.

”You’ll forgive me – your accent sounds like those of the Mwangi tribesman near my homeland. Tell me; have you ever traveled with them before? If so, I would be interested to know more of your tales and adventures.”

”And of course I should ask you: what you would think of joining with our crew and serving with us? If you are as fearsome as your weapons and gear suggest, I suspect you would find a welcome home on our ship; though of course I will need to bring the matter to my fellow officers. But I believe they will happily accept you on board, if you are willing, that is.”

"As for talk of payment and rewards? Naturally, that will depend on the skills you possess..." I add, curious to know what he shall tell me next.

picture of Seijiro in human form

Seijiro continues to circulate through the taproom, chatting with everyone and anyone who is friendly enough to welcome a new face and voice. He takes this time also to approach his fellows from the ship as well and introduce them all to 'Tomo', his new companion, the spider monkey who sits on his shoulder, alternately eating dates and grooming Seijiro's hair.

When he approaches Flynn and the gnome he's deep in conversation with, he stands to one side, listening for a moment before giving the gnome a little smile while checking him out, seemingly impressed by the scars and equipment on the diminutive fellow. When he hears Flynn discussing a berth on the Dread Lady with his fellow red-head, he grins and introduces himself.

"Hi... I'm Seijiro... nice ta meet you. And this little fellow here is Tomo." He introduces the monkey. Anyway, don't be too put off by Flynn here... he talks a lot but he usually has somewhat to say if you dissect it all down to bare bones. Hope to see you on board if ya take the berth."

He gives Barzazal a broad wink and a smile to show his assessment of Flynn is all in good cheer and jovial companionship and then moves on to chat with others as well.

I watch the young man move away, and lift my glass to him with a quick salute.

”That was indeed Seijiro-san; but among his comrades we add the “san” to the end of his name – this is an honorarium which we add out of respect,” I say politely.

”He is a good lad on the ship – clever, crafty, intelligent and thoughtful. I value his companionship. If you travel with us, that is the sort of caliber of crew you which will see among our officers.”

”For he is also an officer; specifically our chief quartermaster, though he does have other duties as well,” I add with a nod.

Then I wait politely for the good gnome’s response.

Seijiro finds a quiet corner and pulls out his harmonica. After a few notes to be sure of his tone, he starts in on a jaunty sailing tune, hoping some of those in their cups will join in with the lyrics. After a few upbeat tunes, he'll play something a bit more serious, then switch back to light and uplifting.

perform:harmonica: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24

After a few songs, he'll get up and dance a little while he plays, doing a lively jig in time with his own music. If he can, he'll try to get others to join him in either singing, dancing or both.

perform:dance: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 1 = 21

All this in the hopes of engendering some companionable feelings among those in the taproom, and encourage more to want to join our crew, seeing we are not only serious, with great adventures behind us, but fun as well.

spider monkey

When Seijiro plays, Tomo cavorts and dances about on his shoulders and on the table near where he sits... Though Seijiro has released hold on Tomo's leash, the monkey stays near him.

When Seijiro gets up to dance, Tomo leaps onto his shoulders and clings to him, yet somehow doesn't throw off his balance too badly.

Tomo leaps onto a table during the dance and cadges a morsel off a plate, just a few nibbles, and settles into the middle of the table while eating, cautiously watching the sailors around him to make sure none are going to protest too heartily.

When Seijiro is finished dancing, Tomo returns to his shoulder and grooms his hair while he continues playing the harmonica for a while longer. Finally, he curls up, not sleeping, just resting, his tail tightly curled around 'Jiro's neck.

I turn to look at the cavorting monkey I offer him a salute with my cup.

A sudden thought hits me... and I docket it away for future reference.

"Ahoy, barkeep - another tot of rum for myself - and could someone get a banana daiquiri for our new companion!" I say with a call.

"Seijiro-san - put down your instrument and come over here. This lad is interested in joining our company," I say, calling out to the young red-head, waving him over with my hand.

Seijiro finishes up his 'set' and slips over to join Horatio and the gnome and sits down, Tomo perking up on his shoulder, alert and watchful of the other two at the table.

He blinks rapidly a few times as he again assesses Barzazal. "You look like a right strong fellow and experienced in a fight or two as well. 'S an honor to meet you. I'm Seijiro, but they all call me just 'Jiro." He gives a little bow of his head to the gnome.

Seijiro looks to Flynn and smiles a little. "You seem more interested in this one than in most of the others.. tell me, what have you learned about him that makes him so intriguing, other than what is apparent, which is that he looks like a great warrior. Ah, but is he a sailor as well?"

I return the pleasantries with a brief grin.

”In truth – I have learned little, yet. But I detected a hint of the Mwangi accent in his voice, and I wondered if he had connections with the tribesman there.”

”As you recall, my mother had many connections with their culture; and before she… passed on… she did quite a bit to assist the members of their tribes and culture.”

I glance at the silent gnome for a moment, than turn back to Seijiro.

”Have you made inquiries for the ship’s storage? For myself I have purchased some incidentals and have had mister Ratline and mister Owlbear take my gear into storage.”

”Also, I have made it known that I am seeking a possible apprentice at this port for working on crafting projects on the ship. I have heard there are many Halflings in this area – at least, more than most various cultures and species.”

”My history at the academy suggests that there are entire Halfling tribes out of Cheliax who have organized rebel factions against the empire there.”

”As my lands have had… difficulties… with Cheliax before, it occurred to me that a Halfling with such experience could be a valuable member of the crew, and a potentially valuable apprentice in general.”

”What do you think of those ideas, Seijiro-san?” I ask, curious to know his thoughts.

”As for gear? I only managed to purchase a few incidental items for myself; nothing fancy or unique – a seaman’s locker; some tools for crafting, a few healing kits, and more conventional gear for myself if I am ever on another away team to some unexplored island.”

”I did manage to purchase some minor gear for crafting modifications for my firearms – but nothing too extravagant. As of now I don’t have the coin, yet.”

I pause a moment considering the options.

”If it matters, I would spend some coin on some personal gear for yourself. For example – a chest or locker to hold your gear might be handy – you do not want to tempt any new sailors into discrepancies.”

”I would also consider bulk goods for the men, too. But also, what about trade goods?” I pause, considering things a moment.

”You know – it seems to me that mister Nighstorm was eager to produce silk sails for our vessel. If that plan is feasible, than it stands to reason that this island is likely to have bulk bolts of raw silk.”

I glance at Seijiro with a somewhat critical eye, appraising his clothes.

”Perhaps you could commission a kimono or two for yourself? That seems like a decent idea, I would think, as well as being somewhat comfortable and more... homey.”

I pause, a sudden brainstorm hitting me.

”That reminds me – on our last expedition we ran into trouble on the island with disease. Yet there are many folk who use silk screens or nets over their bunk or bedroll to keep out mosquitoes or other disease carrying vermin. Perhaps we could craft some mosquito netting for our kits when we travel ashore? Not only would it make our dreams more pleasant but it would likely keep our folk freer from diseases carried by vermin.”

I take a sip of rum.

”I have also considered getting more shaving kits for the men. Lice are problematic with many sailors. Keeping free of that filth is a wise decision, for they are not healthy or good for a crew.”

”I would ask if the merchants here carry certain fruits – limes and lemons are good; for they stem off the difficulties of scurvy – and that can be fatal if untreated.”

”Adding several crates of them to our stores would be useful – as well as tonnage of salt so that if we are hard pressed for food and are forced to hunt meat or catch fish we can dry and salt it down below decks. After all, salted meat lasts a long time, though I recall that none of you prefer it – except for perhaps Dhaavan and myself,” I add dryly, thinking how none of the crew would eat the soup I made from my salted pork earlier.

”If it is also possible, try to get a crate of coconuts, if they have it. The amount of protein in a coconut, as well as other vitamins and nutrients, can sustain a man comfortably for an entire day of hard work; though not too many days. Still; they are both tasty and healthy as well.”

”We may also wish to invest in a fighting top; if so, I would like to be able to construct a weapon called a Double Hackbut and mount it on its carriage on the fighting top.”

”It is a potent weapon – and even if a crewmember cannot use it with much proficiency – its style is such that it can bypass armor and damage a person as easily as touching them. A fairly useful weapon if mounted properly, as it requires a pivoting “carriage” to allow it be angled or rotated with as much ease as adjusting a ballista – perhaps more ease than that.”

”If you would like – I will aid you in the purchase of goods. Business is a skill that is useful to know. When we come more fully into our own, we will need these skills eventually as managing a company of folk takes a lot of time and talent; but also a good business head.”

”Simply tell me your plans, and I shall do what I can to aid you better,” I add with a friendly nod.

"Lockers would be a good idea and not just for my personal gear... and some locks as well... Good idea. You think we should buy bolts of silk? To what purpose. Our sails are being made for us... and we aren't traders, so I don't see the purpose.. maybe you could explain what you have in mind, eh?"

"Netting might be a good idea, though hopefully we won't have a lot of opportunity to worry about needing it. I'd rather spend my time at sea than exploring islands. I suppose it will happen from time to time though that we will have to put in where there is no port town to accomodate us."

"As for shaving, I think that is a personal choice and those who like to be cleanshaven will have their own gear for that, won't they?" Seijiro rubs his own bare chin, and grins, then shrugs. "Tian folk tend not to grow a lot of facial hair, and a sharp dagger is enough to keep trim usually." He blushes slightly as he says this, his own facial hair yet to grow, being that he's Tian and still very young. Of course in his natural form, he's got plenty of fur and no intention of shaving any of it.

"Good idea about the fruits... I'll make sure Fishguts-san lays in some when he orders foods for the journey. I'll check on the coconuts as well. Hopefully we won't have to depend on those, but they will be good to have as insurance against lean days."

"I don't know what this special weapon is, but you built us a fighting top once before. Do you think you can do so again, or is this something that we should consider having done here by Rickety? Can we even afford any more modifications to the ship? If you are to build it, what kind of supplies will you need and how much of them?"

"When the time comes to bargain for goods, your assistance and perhaps Dhaavan's as well, would be most welcome, because I'm not skilled with haggling for prices. Like I said, I can manage supplies we have, but acquiring them isn't exactly my forte."

"So, we need to lay in fruits and coconuts, if they're to be had here, barrels of salt, as well as Fishguts' order, and maybe some healing kits, and lockers. I will have to check with the others in regards to their needs as well. I doubt our cook can tell me what he needs until we know the size of our new crew and we decide on a course so we know how long of a voyage to plan for."

"So, I've never heard of this 'double hackbut' weapon. Is this something new you've invented or what? It has an interesting name to be sure. What does it do? and does it need a fighting top to use it?"

I grin at Seijiro's question, and hold up my hands to check the pace.

"So many questions, aye! And I shall answer them all as soon as I can. For now though, when you consider your lockers, at least consider a good lock - if not an excellent lock. That could be very useful."

"The bolts of silk? I assumed they would be cheap here - if sails are so made at low cost. But I did not suggest buying them for trade. No; I recommended buying them for fabric. You look like a lad who enjoy's the touch of a silk cloth on his skin. And in any case, silk ropes are useful, too. One bolt of cloth would easily allow silk rope - if a lad with little to do was engaged in taking the fibers and braiding them into bolts, eh?"

"Now - as for personal grooming," I say, my eyes growing a bit hard "I will say that for too long I have read cases and seen issues where men have died through illnesses which could have been prevented by good grooming which they did not practice. We shall tolerate anything that - with a little modest encouragement - can compromise the health of the crew. I have no problem with facial hair, or long hair, so long as it is clean of lice and filth."

"While you're at it - I would recommend buying a blank journal or log-book for yourself. That way you can at the least document various important events, and have one for your poetry to be recorded in."

I shrug.

"Eh - it's a thought, at least."

"I confident that we can build a fighting top with no difficulty or charge; if I was able to do it on mister Harrigans vessel; it will be easy to do again on our own ship. As for the weapon? Hmm... I'll tell you more about that soon. For now let us let the goodly gnome speak a moment on his thoughts, eh?"

Damn lack of sleep - 3 hours of which does not lend itself to either good grammar or details like mentioning names. However, luckily I said "mister" not "captain" Harrigan. So I suppose there is that.

"Not at all, I have tendency to go on at lengths," I say with a polite voice in response, deliberately not addressing Seijiro's concerns directly, not certain if the gnome can speak Aquan, but with a quick nod I clearly articulate to my eastern friend that I understood his point, and though I made a slip in my discretion regarding names - it certainly shall not happen again.

"Sometimes it is good to curtail my speech, else it will go on far longer than it should," I say somewhat apologetically to Seijiro; though it is clear my apology is not only for going on at great lengths, but also mentioning the name.

As we wait for the gnome to collect himself and get his thoughts together, I glance around the room and see Dhaavan's eager eyes on our happy trio.

"Ho - Dhaavan! Please sir, do not stare so. Rather, take a cup of your drink and step lively to our table," I say beckoning him toward us.

"You are eager to meet this lad, eh? Well then - come and introduce yourself, eh?" I add with a light twinkle in my eye.

Dhaavan, who has been chatting with everyone around him recruiting crew, looks up at the sound of his name, and glances around the room, giving a nod in Flynn and company's general direction, looking past all of them.

From behind, Barzazal hears a high-pitched voice chirp "Oye mate! So whatcha do? This guy's guessin's been fun but don't really say what yer deal is." Jack Thrush, the talking thrush takes a couple flaps and flits around Barzazal and lands on Flynn's head, preening.

"Jack, I do not mind if you sit on my shoulder, but I do not like it when you sit on my head, though," I add.

Then I enjoy another drink and wonder what will happen next; specifically eager to discover news or details from those who are not part of my immediate company; be it the friendly gnome - or perhaps any other person in the town itself.

"If we do not get some action soon, how would you lads like to play a game at some point? For skill and profit, eh?" I say, willing to make wagers with my companions while we wait for things to develop, if nothing happens soon.

Variel will continue to interact with the locals telling stories and generally trying to keep up the good rapport that the group has had thus far. However, Variel has responsibility now to the ship and crew and heads to bed somewhat earlier than others so that he might wake early and check in on the squibbing the next day. Not that he doesnt trust Rickety, but Variel also wants to see the process and learn from it himself. Before he heads to his room though, he makes a final round checking in with his officers to make sure everything is hand and if they need to inform him about anything.

Basicaly opening it to Flynn and Jiro if they are introducing Variel to Barzazal.

When Variel passes by Jiro, Variel stops and stares at the critter perched on his shoulder. Trying to hide a smirk, Variel composes himself before speaking to Jiro in a stern tone. "Ah - mister Nighstorm. Good evening!" I say politely, hearing his comments.

I glance at the others, and then back to the gnome.

"Well, gentleman - I must say that the night is young, but the atmosphere in this tavern is rather dull for my taste."

"I would leave this place now and seek action. I have spoken at length and my ears and body are wearing from the dull monotony of the night," I say standing and bowing at the others.

"I do not know much of this place, only seeing it briefly on the way in; but we are here for nearly a week waiting for the projects to be finished."

"This affords us either the chance to sit here at the tavern and drink and rehash old stories - or use our time more artfully. Why not do more than sit here - why not take action and explore this place? It may afford us something noteworthy to discover."

"Perhaps it would be best if we leave a contract of terms for the goodly gnome? If he is interested in examining them or studying them - he is welcome to it. Perhaps he will decide he wishes to join us even tonight as we stroll the grounds."

"I wish that were so, and that he would follow us - for he seems a goodly fellow. But I tell you truly gentleman - when I searched the horizon for distant ports and adventure I was clear on one thing - I wanted action."

"And I still do... will any of you join me?" I ask solicitously, including extending the offer to the gnome.

The night progresses without incident. There are calls for songs or stories. Dhaavan seems to be in his element, embellishing the adventures you have been on with tales of great deeds and high flying action. Of foes crushed and narrow escapes. Of course the people know that lots of this is exaggeration but they don't care as long as the story is entertaining.

It is quite late at this point and Horatio goes off to explore the village...which takes all of 30 minutes as it consists of a few buildings and a bunch of huts surrounded by thick impenetrable jungle. Much to your dismay it seems that you are in for a rather dull week. A group of Rickety's workers who are off tomorrow have invited you to play a game of ninepins with them while sharing a small keg of Sargavan beer cooled in the estuary tomorrow during the heat of the day. They said to meet them at the boathouse afternoon when the sun is high and you all can relax and have a bit of fun.

I shall be happy to join you unless master Rickety needs my presence. If he does not have any questions for me that need answering at the time, then by all means I shall participate. It looks like a path stabs in a zig-zag formation from the location of A4 to around the island then down south and out to a eastern spur where watchtower exists. I may strike for the tower and explore that path... perhaps. Though I don't know at this time.

"The gnome is named Barzazal, mister Nightstorm," I say politely as I sip my drink.

"It occurs to me that, as there is little to do in the village proper that I may go for a stroll around the island. There seems to be some sort of tower, perhaps I shall examine it this evening, though I know you are tired at this time."

Right - well, I'm eager for action. It's Saturday night and I want to kill or fight, or do something related to the game. I doubt highly that jungle critters will be plot related or have anything of value on them; but it's something fun.

"If there is nothing of note, perhaps I shall indeed take you up on that game tomorrow. But I have not tasted true blood until... well... until the very same day which I prepared that lovely stew, as I recall. And I am ready for action," I say with a wide smile.

Well, this is pretty up to the GM at this point. I'm down with something for tonight, even if it is a side-quest, one-shot, or whatever. I'll go alone, or with anyone else who wants to come, though I know Dhaavan has unable to attend as he is at a personal engagement tonight, but I'm good to go with anyone who wants to come - provided the GM is up for it, too :)

Well – what I intend to do…:

Okay, right now I intend to take a walk around the town.

I’m planning on starting at the initial compound or base of the town and being a slow spiral outwards to examine the terrain and area for information or adventure.

When I circulate through the town, I will also intend to try to gather new crew members; specifically from the Halfling quarters – though I am open to any options. To attempt to gather crew members I will try to be as polite and charming as possible, and encourage new mates on our expedition via Diplomacy check. Although I have already posted a letter to that effect, my intention is to do what I can to encourage more folk to join our ranks.

At some I'll need a decent gun crew - and Halflings are renown for their aim and excellent eye-hand coordination, so I hope that my sweet talk will succeed in gathering more crew members in the form of Halflings.

Diplomacy Check to formally attempt to recruit an apprentice as well as more Halfling crew members. Hopefully the check is successful enough to bring in more crew members, and especially a good apprentice.
1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27

Next, I’ll examine the buildings and the work I see, trying to see what I learn of the folk who live here. It is my intention to gather as much information as I can about this place so that when we continue to deal with the folk we meet we may have an advantage when we talk to them.

So when I talk to the Halfling folk I’ll toss up a Knowledge: Local check to try to lean any hidden clues or lore about this place. I have already found one magical pistol in this small hamlet. It is an unusual find - what other unusual gear may be here, or circulate through here? If they have enough raw silk for silk sails, than that means that they have an large amount of silk tonnage that comes through here. Where is the point of origin - where does that silk get produced/manufactured - and how can we find that area and intercept it to use it as our own?

I shall attempt to find this out.

Next I’ll use a Knowledge: Engineering check to gauge the style and design that use on their docks, architecture and general fortifications (such as the guard tower and the style of dry docks) both in and around the area. If there are any advantages found on those areas I will do what I can to learn their style and study whatever methods I can learn and copy those styles into my journal.

Next, because the jungles may be dangerous, as I begin my cursory exploration of the terrain around me, I intend to use Knowledge: Nature to try to identify any natural threats or dangers we may discover in or around the town; such as more signs of plague or strange undead monsters in jungles.

That said – here are the checks.

Knowledge: Local
1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13

Knowledge: Engineering
1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14

Knowledge: Nature
1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17

I should be done with my work rather late that evening – but not too late. When I get back to my quarters, I will sack out and wake up in the morning comfortably.

Unless, of course – there is danger afoot – if so, I shall do what I can to fight it! If not, that’s okay, too. Just let me know.

Nuts - It seems I just missed Barzazal's post! Well, I'm off to work now myself. I look forward to seeing more of the new guy on my return.

GM: I tossed up some checks under the spoiler above - just wondering how they turned out. Hopefully they were very awesome results indeed :)

Conversation & assorted silliness:

A little amazed by the intensity of Flynn's speech, Barzazal reflects on what he has been told. Given the flighty nature of gnomes, and Barzazal being no different, he looks to the monkey on Seijiro's shoulder. AS Flynn continues to regale him with the stories of ship and crew, the reheaded fey looks about at the other people quickly gathering about him. Very popular all of the sudden old boy! This wild jungle creature bit is an amazing bit of fun. I can't wait to see where the this leads

Interjecting with occasional "Interestin's." and "Is that so's." Brazazal continues on with his ruse. Looking again to Tomo he says, "So what can you tell me 'bout life aboard this ship of their's? Should I take a berth or not?"

Ninepins:
Ninepins is the precursor to modern bowling and is played almost exactly the same way. Nine wooden pins are set up in a diamond formation and the objective is to knock them all down with a small wooden ball. There aren't any rules for it in the book so I am just making them up. Players roll a ranged attack roll vs an ac of 10 and for every point beyond ten you knock down a pin. Whoever has the most pins knocked down after 5 rounds wins.

Horatio with that roll you are able to pick up one additional crew member, a halfling and when I get around to making your apprentice he will be a bit better.

As it is pretty late by now you all are getting pretty tired. You arrived getting close to dusk and as such with all you have done it is getting on late. Anyone that goes outside does notice that Rickety has his crews working through the night on your ship.

Horatio there aren't any halfling quarters as they are all intermingled with the humans here. The closest thing is a halfling family consisting of a father who works as a carpenter for Rickety and his wife and two small children.

As you get onto the path heading towards the watchtower it is quite dark at this point and the trail quickly gets extremely treacherous as it is quite narrow and goes along the ridgeline with thick jungle on one side and a sheer drop on the other. Perhaps it would be better to explore during the day.

At the flash of shining light, feeling another kind of healing energy well up within him, Dhaavan hopps off his perch on the table, excusing himself from present company, and quickly strolls over to the Gnome. "well now that's new! We got's a pirate priestess sailin our boat what uses waves o' healing kinda like yers, but it feels very different. Where's Yer power comin from what it feels like a light what almost cuts through ya? 'S interestin, and a useful skill mate.

The last two of Seijiro's wounds heal and he smiles as he feels the healing energy course through him. "That's a wonderful ability, but you didn't have to injure yourself to show it... Still, it was an impressive demonstration. Thank you."

Tomo to Barzazal:
Tomo lets out a little shriek and hops up and down on Seijiro's shoulder and then jumps down onto the table. Seijiro hangs onto his leash, but not so tightly that he can't get closer to Barzazal. He paces a bit in front of the gnome, then grabs a bit of food off his plate and alternately munches on it and answers him. [/b]"Ship? what's a ship? can I eat it? I just met this one. he feeds me good things, scratches my itchy places."[/b]

Variel watches as the gnome slices his own skin, only to have it healed again. Not bad, but as Dhaavan mentioned, Sandara can perform those same services. Those abilities are nice for those in our profession, but what abilities do you possess that would aid us on a ship? What position could you hold that would justify Flynn's assessment of you deserving a contract and thus a greater share of the the profits?

What position do you want on the ship or are you ok with Master at Arms?

Scratching his chin for a moment and says, "I am at home aboard a ship, but I am truly most comfortable behind a weapon. The Gods give me gifts of strength unnatural to one of my kind as well access to their other powers. I can take up most any role ye are lookin' for. Or I can turn and walk away content ta find me a place with enough interestin' things to keep the Bleaching away. Aboard your vessel I'd wager my skills would be most useful fending off attackers of any sort and mending your injured."

I'll take what ever job has not been filled.

Hmm...:

So the natural 20+7 grants me the one crew member? Interesting...

I am assuming, then, that this is someone specifically tailored to the needs of an apprentice, gunsmith/tinker then - rather than simply a "standard sailor." (please, please, please :)

Now, not that I doubt you in any way - but (ahem) - if you need any help at all constructing this new apprentice; my full services are at your disposal, of course ;)

Next

I still have not received one confirmed piece of news (by confirmed I just mean: your check resulted in "X". That way I know it was the check itself, and not just general details) about my initial knowledge checks when we sailed into port and I have just tossed up new knowledge checks (as per requested via me using skills that should need checks) - but I have not gotten an answer on those checks.

So at this time I was kind of looking for answer for my initial Knowledge: Local check to learn about the culture. If the people here have firearms for sale, and tremendous amounts of silk for sale - that would be awesome to know where they got the firearms and silk; and anything else for that matter.

I was also looking for an answer about the general make of the area; its design, its style, its cultural nuances. If I am going to take Craft: Carpentry/Ships - as well as Knowledge: Engineer (for using certain skills and feats for siege weapons) - this means those things are becoming important to my character. So any details about the towers, how they crafted these particular dry docks - and so on - all of them are things I want to know.

Also, I was using my Knowledge: Nature check to find out about the general safety of the area - specifically; any poisonous plants, dangerous wildlife, dangerous natural terrain or features - that sort of thing.

So if my checks resulted in no information - please let me know. If they resulted in some information and you gave it to me already - I didn't know that because it was not really clear right now, hence my confusion.

I should add - after re-reading your response I think you answered my questions, but I don't know if that was just general information or related to the checks, hence my confusion (I get confused easily at these things, you know that).

Okay - sorry for all the fuss; I just wanted to make sure I knew what was going on so I didn't get confused later. :)

As I walk up to the trail, I notice the darkness and the leaves.

I shrug and draw my short sword, which gleams instantly in a wide arc surrounding me - now I can see easily.

As I stare at the leafy canopy and dark terrain, my thoughts tack back instantly to the time when I was forced by Plugg to go beneath the decks for a private duty to assist in the bilges.

I rub my chin as I consider that afternoon - the bloody confrontation - two armed men attacking me when I had no weapons. That they were prepared to fight me to the death and kill me, and I had only my bare hands to defend myself....

It was a hell of a fight; exciting, intense, rough, ugly, powerful and exhilarating. And when I had finished with them both; one of them lay dead in a pool of the brackish water, and the other lived only by personal intervention, even as I loomed over him, clutching one of their weapons I had taken from them, my hands covered in blood and my eyes dark and grim - that day I felt like a god!

I rock forward onto the balls of my feet a bit, suddenly eager to feel that same godlike feeling course through my body. After all - the night's gloom would fall way to the light shed by my magical weapons, and my skills in wilderness survival have grown enough that I can trust myself walking a simple path; especially while armed...

Still, as I consider these things, I let out a sigh and then sheathe my sword.

Such events are rare enough, and though they give even the dullest life passion - I have a strong sense that I should not tempt my luck. After all, the gods - those Immortal Ones in the heavens - they may not be as merciful with me a second time around...

Therefore I turn and walk back to the tavern.

Before bed I will pause to find this mysterious Halfling and share a pipe and drink with him/her, just to keep the good vibes going. Then, with no further concerns, I shall return to the tavern. If my companions are still awake when I return, I shall speak to them - if they are asleep - I shall make myself comfortable and sleep.

Perhaps we do have a spot for you on the our ship. We have need of someone to carry out and enforce discipline upon the crew. Not that we have much need at the moment as the crew are mindful and carry out their tasks well. In addition to those duties, we have need of someone to train our crew in repelling attacks from other ships. If you speak true and know how to wield weapons then I believe we have found our next officer. But before we get too hasty, perhaps a demonstration of your prowess should be in order. You showed us how you can mar your body and heal the wounds, all well and good, but can you hit someone who is attacking you? Perhaps after the game of nine pins tomorrow we can draw steel against steel? Not for blood but for points. The first to three touches perhaps?

Ret-con Conversation with Variel...

I speak quietly, after hearing his words and say to him -

"This sounds like a fine plan to spar with him. But perhaps we could make some coin on it? Offer odds and take bets with the locals and members of our crew, for example - when mister Owlbear fought against us for wagers, it was a rough fight. But in the end it allowed us to see his mettle, and know his value as a fighter. Also, it may go even farther to impressing the locals with our talents as fighters in ways that words and stories cannot do - and, depending on the results, we may make some extra coin on the side."

If you wish to make bets go ahead Flynn. I will not do so as I am participating in the sport. Hopefully the on test does endear the locals to us even further as you suggest it might. Let's just hope I don't embarrass myself like I just did trying to dance.

Seijiro again stifles a chuckle at Variel's admission of his own difficulties with the dance earlier. He rises and sets Tomo on the table and does a few passes around the room with an imaginary partner, fumbling and bumbling in a broad parody of Variel's earlier efforts, ending in a sprawl on the floor back at their own table. He breaks into a peal of laughter as he gets up and dusts himself off.

When he's done and sitting back at the table... he looks momentarily abashed and blushes. "Sorry, Variel-sama, I couldn't help myself." He watches Variel carefully for his reaction, hoping it's not one of anger. His own eyes, while he wears a worried expression, twinkle with unexpressed mirth.

Then I shrug.

"But as you wish - you will not bet with the locals. Very well," I say with a bow.

Seijiro, takes just a second to try to judge the reception of the crowd in the taproom of his little performance, hoping they thought it funny.

Seijiro's twinkle disappears momentarily and he collects Tomo, cuddling him and whispers to him in Minkaian for a few seconds before letting him loose on his shoulder with a date to munch.

Minkaian:
"Don't you worry, little friend, I won't let the big bad captain, Mr. Variel, hurt you."

He looks over at Variel and flashes him an impish little smile and a shrug.
