SURPRISE ROUND

DMHW:
Navrak isn't doing sneak attack damage?!?! He's not a rogue?? What the heck IS he then???

If you recall, I'd taken out my bow for just this occasion! And my whip should still be active--it lasts 1 hour

I fire a shot at the third hobgoblin (I believe it's the one standing in the middle of the room)

Attack: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (9) + 9 = 18
Damage (with Sneak Attack): 1d4 + 2d6 ⇒ (2) + (5, 3) = 10

I'll also give a mental command to the whip to close with the drake. I'll assume that I can't actually attack with the whip on the surprise round, but that I could in Round 1

ROUND 1
I take a 2nd shot on the same hobgoblin, trusing that Thordak and Navrak will take down the other. Then I'll step to the south side of the door (outside the room and out of sight), draw my rapier, and get ready to sneak into the room. forgive me, but I can't see the map and don't know which square this will be. Outside and to the left/south of the door I'll simultaneously have the whip attack the drake and try to bind it.

Attack: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (14) + 9 = 23
Damage (with Sneak Attack): 1d4 + 2d6 ⇒ (1) + (1, 5) = 7

Whip attack on drake:1d20 + 11 ⇒ (3) + 11 = 14<--I'm guessing, miss

Whip attack on drake:1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11 <--gaahh!!

Male Gnome Sorcerer/9 - (HP: 49/49 - AC20;FF17;T18 - F+5;R+6;W+7 - Init+9 - Per+11)

I pull out the wand of magic missiles and shoot for the drake.

Wand of Magic Missiles: 3d4 + 3 ⇒ (4, 4, 4) + 3 = 15 WOW - bet I won't get another one of those for a while - or at least for another 64 rolls.

Dungeon Master

The time that has elapsed since the first battle is about five minutes. Therefore, all of your buffs from the last battle are no longer in effect.

Bofus:
My mistake. Narvak is certainly a rogue. The issue is with the DM in that he totally forgot. I think I am still in Advanced Dungeons and Dragons thinking that Thieves need to back stab to get that bonus damage. He would have killed the hobgoblin. Forgive me, but I am going to just going to let it ride for the moment so I do not need to retcon in the battle. Thordak finishes off the hobgoblin anyway.

Surprise Round Summary

Bofus. Your shot against the third hobgoblin hits and badly wounds the hobgoblin.

Round 1 Summary

Forest Drake. The green scaled dragon tries to avoid the sticky strands of web but cannot avoid it.

Drake's Reflex Save vs. Web 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12

Outraged by the imprisonment, the Drake spits a ball of acid that bursts into a cloud on impact.

Acid Damage 4d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 3, 3) = 17 Mantooth, Florence, Tirion, and Bofus affected.
Reflex Save DC 14 for half damage

With a surge of speed the Drake attempts to escape from the webs.

Magnimarana Damage1d10 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11

Ref Save 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20

Dungeon Master

The cloud of acid left by the Drake is now an Obscuring Mist

Round 2 Summary

• Tirion. You dismiss the web and call out directions to the others in the obscuring mist.
• Bofus. You attempt to use your whip and hit the dragon, grappling it. As you rush by the south wall, the Drake does not get its attack of opportunity against you due to its grappled condition.

• Mantooth. Your round 1 attack hit causing great damage to the drake, but your round 2 attack missed.
• Matthias. You move to I20 and attack the Drake, but your scimitar misses.
• Narvak. The rogue guildmaster draws two more daggers from his sleeve and throws them to effectively hit the drake critically between the eyes. Although it is near death's door, it is still alive, though barely.

Dagger 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (20) + 14 = 34
Damage 1d4 ⇒ 3

Confirmation 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (20) + 14 = 34

Florence (unresolved). You still have your attack from your ready action on round 1 and now your attack on round 2. The drake is badly hurt, so I will wait to post round 3 until after your attack in case the drake does not survive.

Good work all, I think that is just about all of them.

Looking over at Thordak: I know you are all keen on that suit of furry armor you have been working on with the blonde armorer in town, but maybe you should see if she could use this. I hear that dragonhide armor is very nice, and probably much cooler than the furry white one.

Come to think of it, how do you think those brute hobgoblins got this giant snake into the town anyway?

@ Navrak: This is how Trask got in and out, isn't it?

Sense Motive (on hsi answer): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14

@ Everyone Well, are we done here? we need to get that flower to Jarmaath right away, and let him know about this Red Hand of Doom, and that Trask is no longer a blight on this land. AND we can bring his wizard lackey with us as a "get well soon" present to boot!!

Female Human Bard 4

Heh, leaving sounds good, these idiots really managed to hurt me once...bah.

I sheath my sword, give the drake a last sorrowful look and shake my head.

Dungeon Master

Drake hide is not nearly as good as real dragon hide. Certainly spell casters like lots of body parts for components, and real dragon hide could be very valuable for some armor, but I'm not sure how I feel about you guys collecting guts and parts of every creature you fight.

Bofus wrote:
"This is how Trask got in and out, isn't it?"

"Well, certainly this is one of the ways, but I would be foolish to only have one escape route don't you think?"

Bofus:
You do not suspect the rogue is lying. He seems very relaxed, but he is not exactly revealing to you all of his secrets either. The others may not understand this, but what rogue do you know does give away all of his secrets?

Male Gnome Sorcerer/9 - (HP: 49/49 - AC20;FF17;T18 - F+5;R+6;W+7 - Init+9 - Per+11)

We should leave at least two or three people here to guard the three we have tied up, and Kruel. Bofus, why don't you, Matthais and Thordak take the plant back to Lord Jarmaath and see what Thordak's girlfriend can do with it. Then get the captain and some men and come back down to arrest these guys. The rest of us can watch the prisoners.

Looking at Kruel - I know that you turned coat and helped us at the end, and that you claim you were being forced to do this, but I feel that it is for the authorities to decide your punishment, if any. I am sure that Bofus will tell the good captain how you helped bring down this brute. I kick the drake. But, I still do not think that we can just let you run after being involved in the poisoning of Lord Jarmaath, even if it was coerced.

Tirion is rolling on the floor laughing at the image of Thordak decked out in a combination of trobical bird feathers, polar bear hides and bits of vermin armor.

Quietly to Bofus: Also, we still need to check those chests in the bunk room.

Well, then . . . are we ready to save the day again?? Mantooth, perhaps you should escourt our bound and gagged friend to the guard while we all escourt this flower to Jarmaath's palace.

I'll go back to the bound wizard and have a little chat. So, you've had some time to absorb what's happening here, I'd imagine. We're going to be bringing you topside, and undoubtedly you'll be heading back down into some other dark, more unpleasant, hole--if you even live through the day. Do we need to take the late Trask's head with us as proof of his demise, or are you going to testify to his death? And I might add, you may want to consider spilling the beans--ALL the beans--on the Baron's plans regarding this Red Hand (I give the chief hobby's corpse a kick) in order to make things better for you. Of course, I cna't speak for the good Lord Jarmaath myself, especially since I know *I'd* be pretty cranky if someone tried to poison me and overrun my town with stinky hobgoblins . . .

I think it might be worthwhile to search the Baron and the chief hobgoblin thoroughly, in case htey had any paperwork, or identifying insignia, or anything like that. I'll take 20 to search both of them (which will yield a 30 on the Perception results).

While I'm searching . . .If you guys want to bring that flower back now, go ahead--I'll catch up as soon as I'm done.

Male Gnome Sorcerer/9 - (HP: 49/49 - AC20;FF17;T18 - F+5;R+6;W+7 - Init+9 - Per+11)

Aren't there two more doors we have not searched? The trapped one across from the drake and the one off of the meeting room? We should search those - and have Kruel open/disable the doors as well.

Dungeon Master

@Bofus

The Baron is a fordiable man. Aside from his clothing, you find a stash of 23 gold pieces in his belt pouch, and a carefullyfolded map in his breast pocket. It looks like the following:

@Tirion: my apologies, I wrote up my post about searching the Baron before seeing your post before it, Tirion. I was not purposefully ignoring you, and i only just discovered my error.

I give Tirion a look, then jerk my head to the side in the universal "let's talk over there" gesture. I'm trying to make sure Navrak can't hear this conversation.

Look, this place is Navrak's home. We got what we came for, and more . . . I really don't feel comfortable looting his place while he's here watching us, you know?? I mean, those chests coudl have belonged to Trask's men, or to Navrak's men--we don't know which.
.
Right now, we--meaning everyone down here--are the only ones who know about this place. Let's get everyone out, and once the authorities decide what to do with Navrak and whatever of his gang survived, THEN we'll decide whether to come back here and clean it out. If they decide he's not to blame for the recent nastiness, he gets his place back with his goods intact; if they decide otherwise, then we have every right to get these spoils with a totally clean conscience. Savvy? Heck, we can even claim rights to it when we turn them over! I'll bet you anything Jarmaath will gladly allow us that, considering we've just saved his life--AGAIN!!

"Forgive me, Master Gnome, I believe I have gotten off on the wrong foot with you from the beginning. May I start again? I am Narval Kruel at your service." The gentleman rogue offers you a hand. "Please tell me who I have the pleasure of addressing."

Once introductions are finished, Narvak begins to reasonably explain his position.

"It appears that I must clarify to you my position again. First, I will accept full responsibility for the one crime that the guild is responsible for. We stole a very beautiful flower. However, now that I am aware of the implications of this plant, I am happy to see that it is returned. We are not taking any responsibility for the poisoning of Lord Jarmaath. The good Lord and I have a mutual understanding, and he knows that I would not willing put him in any danger. The alternative would be to have Verasa Kaal running Brindol and then we would all be under her thunb! Now, clearly we do not want that."

"If you are interested in pursuing the poisoner, you need to look for a man by the name of Fortkeep. He is the one that delivered the candle to Lord Jarmaath at the start of the Tournament of Heroes. It somehow got past Ulverth's eye in the guise of a gift. We had nothing to do with it. In fact I was not aware that our Lord was ill until Baron Trask explained the situation to me. Apparently, Trask has been trying to eliminate Jarmaath for a great long while and he finally found a way through Fortkeep."

Bofus wrote:

The mage turns pale at the mention of Trask's head. "So you were able to kill the Baron. You must feel very powerful. Well, I will tell you this. His death will not stop the inevitable onslaught that you will all face from the Red Hand! However, if you let me go, and I will send word to spare your miserable lives."

I remark mockingly.

Male Gnome Sorcerer/9 - (HP: 49/49 - AC20;FF17;T18 - F+5;R+6;W+7 - Init+9 - Per+11)

Listening the Kruel - I understand your position. However, we have a seriously ill Lord of this good town. If what you say is true, and considering Lady Kaal is not known for fully supporting Lord Jarmaath all the time, your tale may have some truth to it. I think that having some of our group keep an eye on you and your men who are still alive - which includes your barkeep and one of your men from the barracks - while the rest of us take this flower to Lord Jarmaath and assure that he is healthy, is not an unwarranted request. Once Lord Jarmaath is healthy and has vouched for you, then we can decide whether to allow you to continue to operate in this town.

Personally I am not a supporter of those who live by stealing from the hard working population of this land, but at the same time, I know that in every land there are those who would wish ill on others. If the good Paladin has determined that you are not evil - and Lord Jarmaath has determined that your undertakings are less damaging to this good town than many other thieves guilds would be - then I will not stop the Lord from allowing you to go free. Until such time as Lord Jarmaath has instructed us to allow you to go free, I feel that we need to keep you and your guildmates confined.

Your chances at returning to your freedom would not be hurt however, if you were to provide us with additional information on how you came to be in contact with the Trash man and how you snuck these filthy hobgoblins and their evil drake into the city.

Turning to the mage as he begins threatening us, I kick him: You, by associating with such lowlifes, have proven that you are not even worth my time. We will send a message, and it will be in the blood of hobgoblins and those who associate with such vermin. I then spit on him, turn around, walk away and ignore him.

"Well that's easy. Directly up those stairs is a small warehouse where the Baron brought in his new friends in a carriage and a wagon concealing the the caged drake. Kastoon manned the gate and simply let them through."

"The history with Trask goes back to when I was a young rogue working in Elsircross. I was strangely caught with someone's jewels in my possession and was wrongfully imprisoned. The good Baron let me go, but with some strings attached. You could say, that those strings have simply grown stronger over the years as he has threatened retribution should I no comply. Unfortunately, his reach has always been very long."

Alright, enough talk! Thordak says wiping his axe off and picking up the flowerpot. Oi'm goin' to see Jarmaath, an' pronto!

With that, he steps over the dear Drake and starts up the stairs.

Male Human Cleric/5

Thordak, perhaps we should have Bofus scout that stairway before you walk into an ambush.

Turning to the guildmaster:

This man is an affront to all that is good about this city. He does not deserve to live. But, I feel that we must let justice run its course. Why don't I stay here with Mantooth and Florence while the other three take the flower back to the castle. We will let Lord Jarmaath decide what to do with these men - but will not turn them over to the guard until Jarmaath makes his decision.

With that, I walk back to the barracks and get the thief tied up there and the barkeep and drag them back to the storage room.

Does anyone have manacles for Kruel? Until it is determined what to do with him, he should have his hands bound since thieves have been known to have quick hands.

So you were able to kill the Baron. You must feel very powerful. Well, I will tell you this. His death will not stop the inevitable onslaught that you will all face from the Red Hand! However, if you let me go, and I will send word to spare your miserable lives.

Puh-LEEZ!! If you think we're going to be impressed with YOUR threats--you, who we took down before the fight even started, and are now bound and helpless--think again. We catch the drift of the low-life scum you choose to associate with. Sure, they're dangerous, but SO ARE WE. And you're a couple hand-gestures Here I demonstrate a couple chioce hand-gestures short of a somatic component if you think we're going to let you walk anywhere but to the guard!!

I'll haul him up on his feet (if he resists, I'll draw my rapier and give him a poke) and lead him to the stairs. You so much as twitch your fingers, I'll cut 'em off.

Now, is someone going to stay here while we bring the flower--and the fertilizer--to Lord Jarmaath?

OK, my scouting is a good idea. But don't be too quick to hand out death sentences, my friend. You may dislike the idea of a thieves' guild, but they do serve their purposes--as evidenced by the fact that Lord Jarmaath suffers this gent to "operate" in Brindol. If you so boldly recommend his death, you also boldly disagree with the good Lord's judgement.
.
Just sayin'. ;-)

I'll chekc the stairway for traps:
Perception: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (11) + 17 = 28

then chekc the trapdoor at the top of teh stairs:
Perception: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (10) + 17 = 27

then listen at the trapdoor.
Perception: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (3) + 10 = 13

If it sounds clear, open slightly and peek out.

I am surprised Thordak isn't inquisitive of what the estimated AC would be for armor made out of Trask

"Matthias is right. Whether or not you were put in this position by necessity or by your own desire for gain you have broken the law and helped put the Lord in grave danger. Since you have agreed to take full responsibility for your guild it will be best that you stay with us. I can also imagine it would benefit your situation to answer to the Gnome's questions."

Diplomacy 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (20) + 10 = 30

Once Matthias has gathered the rogue and the barkeep, Mantooth makes sure that the mage is also dragged with the group of prisoners to best keep an eye on them.

"I beg your pardon, Teskerwill! Who just aided you at your side when slaying a Forest Drake? I didn't exactly see you diving in eagerly to fight off the enemy. Even with wounds, I still fought right up front! What more do I need to do to earn your loyalty? You and the dark gnome still not seem to trust me at all! Who do you think helped your family when Verasa Kaal was putting pressure on them to sell their family estate. Who do you think secretly helped them out when Kaal was ready to come in and steal the family mansion right out from under them? Before you judge us so harshly, I think you need to begin asking some questions about what is right and wrong."

"Now, I admit I have made many mistakes in the past, but what right do you have to enter my home, and then call the authorities to come in here and arrest me?! This does not seem very kind at all! I though they said that the Heroes of Elsir Vale were good and kind. Why would you possibly restrict my freedom? Haven't you come for what you are looking for?"

Male Human Cleric/5

DMHW - when you are editing things that I am responding to, it makes it hard to figure whether my response is coherent, hopefully this makes sense.

Mr. Kruel, I am not saying that you are guilty of judging you. In my personal opinion, those who live outside of the law and steal from the innocent do not belong in this good city. However, it is not my place to judge whether you deserve any punishment. That decision will be left to Lord Jarmaath or whoever he chooses to render judgment in this matter. What I am saying is that I would prefer that all who supported Trask in his attempt to overrun this city and murder its citizens should be confined until such time as Lord Jarmaath decides what to do with them. Ten minutes ago you were sitting at a table with Trask plotting how hobgoblins could overrun this city, once you saw that Trask was not going to be the victor, you quickly turned coat and switched sides.

I understand that you have convinced my halfling friend that you are innocent and meant no harm. However, I am not so easily swayed. Whether you chose to switch sides to save your own hide and still support this Red Hand group, or if you truly had the best interests of Brindol in mind, I do not know. If you truly helped my family, then I thank you for that, but that does not diminish the fact that you were found sitting at the command table with Trask and his hobgoblin lackeys while Trask harbored a forest drake beneath Brindol in your guild.

You may continue to try to convince my companions all you wish. But, until I have heard from Lord Jarmaath that you are to be set free, I wish for you to be bound so that we can secure you and your fellow guild members. The proper thing would be to inform Captain Ulverth of your home, but this is not what I am asking my companions to do. If your claims about a relationship with Lord Jarmaath are true, he will instruct that you be freed and I shall not publicize your name and guild. You could not ask for a better result than this since what you truly deserve is to have a sword between your shoulders.

I'll nod to underline that I'm totally in favour of Matthias' words.

"Well it is obvious that you are not going to trust me, so I won't bother tell you about the trap that your friend Thordak is about to run into. Perhaps I should simply let him find it for himself while I wait for Ulverth to arrive. I will be in the meeting room if you need me. " Narvak leaves the storeroom and returns to the meeting room.

I give Matthias a sharp look. I open my mouth to reply to this, but hesitate, looking back and forth to everyone to guage how everyone is feeling and dealing with this situation.

After the exchange is done . . .

@ Matthias: We'll talk later.

Thordak's eyes widen suddenly and he freezes, looking back at the group and Narvak. Wot! Wha-hey! Wot kind of trickery is this! Traps!? He flusters, desperately trying to hold on to the flower and stay perfectly still.
