I've got some crazy dayz coming up too, especially tomorrow! Happy 4th everybody!
Thordak squints at Ulverth, then, without breaking squint-contact, blows his nose loudly into the offered handkerchief.
Congrats, Mantooth!

Hmmmm, Tirion brings up an excellent point. If we are somehow able to separate the dragon from the rest of the horde, I'm not sure we could take it without Mantooth's sword. If his responsibilities are here, could he also, in good conscience, keep assisting us outside the city walls??

Tirion Jörðhár

Matthais is a lifetime resident of this good town. He is a dedicated servant of the Inheritor, and he is a great warrior. I believe he is one that the guard would loyally follow and who would use his judgment for the betterment of this community, not for the gain of his mother as another soon to be former magistrate has done.
In addition, he would solve one of the problems that has been repeatedly mentioned in the earlier meeting. As a priest of the Inheritor, he will be able to heal the wounded at the front where he is commanding without the need for additional priests or healers.

Mantooth Longbrow

"Tirion, are you saying that you do not believe I would be a good magistrate? I am not saying Matthias would not do a good job, but he is actually a priest of Sarenrae and would likely forgive nearly everybody their crimes. If you want true justice, a paladin of Iomedae is by far a wiser choice. Besides, do not think for a moment that I am going to leave you to fight that dragon on your own. If it is the good lord's decision to name another magistrate, then that is clearly his decision, and I will accept it, but at the moment he has appointed me the task and the Inheritor willing, I plan to see it through!"

Tirion Jörðhár

I would have interjected before the decision was made, but was busy two days ago.
I forgot he was a priest of Sarenrae - but I do not think that would make much difference.
Tirion looks to Mantooth: I believe that you would make an excellent choice as magistrate. My concern is that the duties of the magistrate are in this city. It will be necessary that you remain in the city. The Brindol Guard cannot have its leader leaving to hunt down rumors of dragons and crazed monks all the time. The Guard needs a leader who will remain in the city and be available at all times.
My point is that Matthais has returned to Brindol and this is his home and where he plans to stay. You my good paladin, you are still an adventurer at heart just like the rest of us. I am not speaking of your capabilities, I am speaking of the needs of the city and the guard and that I believe your current role as a member of our party, the Heros of Elsir Vale, is not a good mesh with the requirements you will have as the Magistrate.

Oathday, Lamashan 18, 4710, 3 hours before midnight
Lars Ulverth leads you out of Brindol Keep, and in a hurried walk, he limps across to the main door to Brindol Prison.
"Well, here we are. Brindol Prison. Most of the Brindol Guard are stationed here and Jared Kaal is likely to be here as well. What approach do you all want to take? I am happy to knock, but I am not sure if they will let us in."

Bofus Beerswizzler

I'm assuming we have a written official decree stating Mantooth is the Magistrate now, and that Jared is to be put under arrest?
Can you open this door?
Pfff are you kidding me? You want me to blindfold myself first? ;-)
Captain, are there any other exits to this building? If Jared suspects what is coming, he could try to send someone out to warn Mommy Dearest. If there's another exit, we should cover it against that eventuality.
Bofus unlocks the door while speaking to the Captain.

"As far as I know, there is only the one way in and out. Unless he has had a secret passage built or has the ability to fly, I think we have him caught like a rat in a trap!"
"Let's enter. I've got the warrant for the Magistrate's arrest."

Feel free to post in any order. However, I will resolve this battle in the order of initiative.

Tirion moves to AB25 and casts Charm Person at AD25.
Standard Action: Cast Charm Person - Will DC17 - if failed, attitude changes to Friendly.
Tirion then speaks to the guard.
My friend, good to see you again. Lord Jarmaath wishes to speak with the magistrate. Is he available?

Brindol Guard

"My friend, good to see you again. Lord Jarmaath wishes to speak with the magistrate. Is he available?"
"It is nice to see you, but do I know you? You certainly don't look like Lord Jarmaath. The magistrate told us that he does not want to be distrubed. Can you come back at another time, my little gnome friend?"

Tirion Jörðhár

Tirion turns to the other guard:
I apologize. I am Tirion Jörðhár and I am accompanying Captain Lars Ulverth who has been sent here by Lord Jarmaath to speak with the magistrate.
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (16) + 12 = 28
Tirion then turns to the, hopefully, charmed guard.
If you do not believe me, may I introduce Captain Ulverth. We were sent here so that the Captain could speak with the magistrate on matters of great urgency. It is believed that there is a mole in the inner circle, thus, the Captain personally has been sent to speak with Magistrate Kaal.
Tirion suddenly stops, realizing what he just said and glances over his shoulder: Oh shoot. I was not supposed to say that. Well, here is the Captain.
Bluff: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (13) + 12 = 25

Brindol Guard

"What the hell do you mean by a mole? We are loyal to the magistrate and would never break his trust! What type of information are you talking about here?! You may have said too much, but it's out now. So spit the rest out! What information has been leaked?! Tell us who it is and we'll smash his teeth in!"
The friendlier guard chimes in. "Are you sure you don't mean a vole instead of a mole? This I would believe because I've seen a great deal of rodents in the prison cells. I'm sure the prisoners have complained about it."

Captain Lars Ulverth

The captain limps forward and declares bodly, "I am Captain Ulverth and I demand you step aside this instant! You do not need to know the details of why we are here, and I swear that if you do not comply this instant, I will have you stripped of any rank and expelled from this guard this instant!"
Intimidate: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20

Brindol Guard

The friendlier of the two guards replies,"I do not see why not. This seems like a reasonable request."
The other guard replies, "I'll tell you why not! The magistrate ordered that he not be disturbed. I'm following his orders, and I will not be punished for that, but I'll tell you what. I will send word that you broke into his prison and demanded to speak with him. If he wants to speak with you, I'm sure he will let you in. Otherwise, I think you are tough out of luck!"
The guard reaches for his keys and begins to open the lock to the next door.

Tirion Jörðhár

            Tirion sighs:
If you continue to open that door without answering the Captain, then I will be forced to blast you full of holes. That is holes, not moles or voles.
Intimidate: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (2) + 12 = 14
Tirion looks at the friendly guard:
And, yes, we do have a rodent problem in the prison and in the town, and we are working to eliminate it at present.
If the other guard does not stop, Tirion will again cast Charm Person hoping to have two friendly guards.
If necessary: Cast Charm Person - Will DC17 or friendly
I am hoping that someone else will chime in here. Perhaps Bofus removing the keys from the guard or Mantooth announcing that he is the new magistrate.

Rebel Red

I was assuming we were still rolling with the notional initiative order. Looks like we have broken with it so time for Red to chime in
"There now my good people" Red addresses the arguing crowd "Everyone has their job to do, and I would hope we saw no less from such fine fellows. What use would an inattentive and morally ambiguous guard be in a place such as this? The man is right to question the extraordinary when he sees it and I commend him on his dedication to his role."
Red turns now to the guards "As truth happens, if it is the Magistrate you answer to then you now answer to Magistrate Longbrow in which case you will dutifully let us pass that he may take up his residence. If it is not the Magistrate you answer to, but instead the house of Kaal then the new Magistrate would rightly point out that you are now trespassing, and he would kindly ask you to surrender any keys or passwords and exit the building. Either way, you see the predicament faced? Now whilst you consider your position, let me add that you have before you the Captain of the Guard, a Paladin of Iomedae freshly titled Magistrate, and we are in the company of an Angel. You have nothing to fear from us, we are clearly goodly and righteous. I am sure we can count on you to see the sense in this and aid our rightful entry?
Diplomacy 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (20) + 11 = 31

Bofus Beerswizzler

As this is occurring, Bofus sidles up to the guard by the door, ready to grab his keys.
Stealth: 1d20 + 23 ⇒ (13) + 23 = 36

Brindol Guard

"Wise choice. Now, could you be so kind as to lead us to the former Magistrate's chambers."
"Uhmm, yes. Right away, Gentlemen."
The friendly Brindol Guard leads the others through the unlocked door and then north along the hallway. In a moment he reaches a barred gate. The guard reaches for his keys, but unaware that Bofus has taken them, the guard is unable to find them.
"Uhh, I had my keys a moment ago. Duhh, I'm not sure what happened to them."
The guard turns red with embarrassment and begins to frantically search his pockets. "Uhmm. I can't find my keys. I can't let you go any further until I find them."

Captain Lars Ulverth

"What kind of incompetence do we have here in this prison?!" Ulverth moans. "Can I assume that Magistrate Kaal has been responsible for your training? If the young Kaal wasn't already ousted, I would try and see him fired!"
Turning to Bofus, Ulverth asks, "Can you kindly open these gates and let us through?"

Bofus Beerswizzler

The guards look to each other nervously, unsure how to proceed. "Jared Kaal is no longer Magistrate?!" They question. "Well, we are loyal to the magistrate, so we will not hinder your efforts. You may pass."
This seemed way too easy...Bofus isn't sure this guy is sincere.
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (1) + 10 = 11
Can you kindly open these gates and let us through?
Bofus looks a little shocked at the Captain's suggestion. Sir, I'm sure I don't know what you mean...Why would lil' ol' ME be able to get through these sturdy gates?!?! Besides...
Bofus then walks up to the panicked guard, and surreptitiously places the keys on his belt, then taps his shoulder and points to them
Sleight of Hand: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (9) + 17 = 26
...why do you need anything but the keys, right here on his belt? You must have just missed them on your first pass, my good man.
Bofus then walks over to the Captain and Mantooth while the flustered guard unlocks the gate, and whispers to them. I'm going to slip in quickly, ahead of them. If Jared tries to escape or send word out, I'll do some judicious head-bopping
He then sidles up close to the gate, and tries to sneak inside quickly while the guard opens it for the new Magistrate and company, and dart into shadows therein, sap in hand. Intention is to stay ahead of the escorting guards so Bofus can flank the door to Jared's quarters, and potentially stop any tom-foolery heading away from the group
Stealth: 1d20 + 23 ⇒ (1) + 23 = 24

Brindol Guard

"...why do you need anything but the keys, right here on his belt? You must have just missed them on your first pass, my good man."
"What the?!!!! . . . " The guard declares, annoyed that he had them all the time but could not find them.
"I knew they were there!"The guard lies defensively.
Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15
The guard leads the company onward, but he missed the fact that Bofus is the one who is actually leading them up ahead.
He reaches the door on the right where he knocks once followed by a knock three times. After a moment of silence, the guard replies, "I suppose he must be gone already. I do not hear him at all. What do I do now?"

Bofus Beerswizzler

He reaches the door on the right where he knocks once followed by a knock three times. After a moment of silence, the guard replies, "I suppose he must be gone already. I do not hear him at all. What do I do now?"
That was clearly a secret knock of some kind. Bofus suspects that the guard might be warning Kaal of trouble and tries to read the guard's attitude--whether he's lying about Kaal being gone...

            Tirion looks at the Guard:
Where would he have gone? Please don't tell me that the former magistrate installed back doors into, and out of, the city prison?
Tirion looks around trying to see whether there is anything of note about.
Perception: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (12) + 11 = 23

Tirion, you notice another gate to the north which leads into the prison cells. The guard knocked on the right hand door which leads you to believe that is where he is located, but there is also a door to you left as well as the one on the right.

Brindol Guard

"Where would he have gone? Please don't tell me that the former magistrate installed back doors into, and out of, the city prison?"
"I do not know where he went. Perhaps he is checking on the prisoners or is in the barracks with the other guards. I've been on duty in the front room, so I have not been checking up on his whereabouts."

(assuming there's a Message spell still going) Bofus whispers
Have him just open it, and quick!

Tirion Jörðhár

Tirion looks to the guard: Unlock this door, I can magically search the area beyond an open door.
Whisper: At least I can magically search when someone else is doing the looking and I am listening to them through magical communication. . . . Bofus we will hold this passage, you search beyond once the door is open.

Bofus Beerswizzler

Smiling, Tirion steps into the room:
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (14) + 13 = 27
Gentlemen, I apologize for this unannounced entry, but may I introduce Sir Mantooth Longbrow. Paladin of Iomedae and the newly named Magistrate of Brindol. He is here together with Captain Lars Ulverth of the Brindol Lions to speak with former magistrate Kaal.

Mantooth Longbrow

"Indeed, I am Sir Mantooth Longbrow. By the powers vested in me from Lord Kerden Jarmaath, I am the new magistrate of Brindol and I have come to relieve Jared Kaal from duty. In fact we are here to arrest him for treason against the crown! You would do well to step aside and let us pass!"

"Magistrate Kaal is not here, so I suggest you leave immediately. I'm sure you will find him back at the Kaal residence!"
