Mazatl |

Thwack and Slash: 2d6 + 1 ⇒ (1, 2) + 1 = 4
Mazatl, knowing that her elementals are notoriously weak if targeted directly, and not bound to her, simply tries to take the creature down with a swing of her staff, but the water is the creature's element and she opens herself up to a savage counterattack, while her staff goes wide.
Should the elemental 'harm' Mazatl, her control of the other elemental diminishes by 1 instead, but her armor may just prevent that. Depending on the tag of the water elemental, it either does 1d4, 1d6, or 1d8. Any tag that doesn't explicitly give it the 1d6 or 1d8 damage (with appropriate ranges) is 1d4. Unless I completely misread how my elementals work. On a side note, if you have the full grim world book: When I Channel, do I hit for class damage (1d4) if I use the channel offensively without one of the damaging tags? :)

Aifric |

Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 2
Aifric makes his way back down to the rest of his group, his earlier fear completely forgotten. He won't mention the slight pain in his side. His eyes are shining with pride at his accomplishment. Mazatl believed in him... even though she called him a monkey again. Why can't she remember he's not a monkey? Monkeys have tails. Maybe, if he had a tail, he would have better balance, though. Why in the world has he been slipping lately? He's usually an excellent climber. Not seeing her anywhere, he asks quietly, "Where's Mazatl?" He's disappointed she didn't see him beat that bad guy.

Mazatl |

Mazatls elemental have 2 hp per level once her control runs out. DM might give it more hp since its been free for a while, or because it was too strong for her to begin with, but the six is probably more than adequate damage. :)

Aifric |

Oops, I thought Mazatl had been dragged underwater. If the fight is still going on when Aifric rejoins the group, he will make Mazatl his Fulcrum (giving Mazatl Confidence: +1 to damage rolls). In addition to his own attack, he can make Opportunity Strikes any time Mazatl takes or deals damage. I assume any attacks described above take place before he gets down there.

DM Frogfoot |

Aifric, as you climb down, you see Mazatl struggling to escape the water and seeming to be pulled under by the water itself. The plant elemental that you're riding on shakes in distress as Mazatl struggles for air, and Athena leaps forward to stab the creature in its watery heart. Though the creature was born and made of water, it nonetheless had a physical body that was distinct from the water around it. Athena's stabs get the creature to release Mazatl and disappear deeper underwater, out of sight. Aifric, you're able to help Athena pull Mazatl out of the water, with difficulty. You notice the elemental you're riding isn't quite as stable as before. Mazatl, take 1d6 damage, ignores armor.

DM Frogfoot |

Svog, you find a small stool nearby and prop open the door behind you carefully. Inside the cargo hold of the ship, the heat is oppressive. Overhead you see bundles and bundles of some kind of plant material lashed to the roof within arm's reach. You'd guess holly is in there. There's two rows of bubbling cauldrons down here, and the occasional support pillar running from floor to ceiling, but otherwise very little cover.
You look inside the cauldrons and your suspicions are confirmed - molten silver. You try to imagine how much it would cost to accumulate this much silver in coinage...the best you can come up with is, a whole lot. There's enough Bane material in this cargo hold to sow a major amount of chaos in Magna Gracia. You still hear someone walking around down in the cargo hold with you; you hear them more clearly now, whoever they are has a dragging limp and a peg leg, but you still can't see them. The glow of the fires heating the cauldrons is muted by the cauldrons themselves, so it's darker in here than you expected. What do you do?

Mazatl |

Mazatl loses a control point, rather than taking the damage. It's what must happen, unfortunately. She'd gladly take the hit, but, alas.
When you or your leashed elemental takes damage from any source, you lose 1 Control and the damage is negated. Trust me, I'd rather take the damage. Mazatl has plenty of health and gets XP for taking damage at some point in the session :P
The tether of vital force moving from Mazatl to the elemental is weakened by the sneak attack from the water elemental, as the other two help her back onto the 'boat.' Mazatl is able to tell by the tether that her 'control' of the creature is endangered.
After spluttering the water from her lungs, and taking a moment to gulp some water down, and heave some up... "Won't be able to go with you on ship. Have to stay... can't get hurt again... or risk losing control."

Aifric |

Aifric is a bit skittish regarding the unpredictability of their ride, but he's absolutely livid that Chaney did nothing at all to help Mazatl. "'All for one, and one for all,' is what the good guys say," he hisses, still trying to be quiet. "'Me, myself, and I,' is what the bad guys say. What do you say, Chaney?"

Chaney |

Resuming his seat, his voice calm. The wizard replies. "I say, that if you are quite finished choking out our ally would you kindly revive them and determine which family enjoys their employment. Then perhaps we can ascertain how we might assist each other in our no doubt parallel missions."
"As far as Ms. Green's recent contretemps. She appears quite competent to deal with issues of her own specialty."

Mazatl |

I thought white was foxy, and green was Mazatl.
Also, did I mess up somewhere in that the Smiler was one of the -three- foreign ships?
"Doesn't matter.." she says after a moment, "Thank you both." she nods to Aifric and Athena, eyes closing after a moment.

Mazatl |

Mmhmm. I thought it was foreign. I just didn't understand why the lookout on one of the ships was a friend, in Chaney's eyes. :P I thought you thought it was an allied ship.
"What makes you think... scout on foreign ship... is a friend..?" Mazatl's head hung low, her eyes still closed, so the dull green light of her eyes didn't reflect off of the water... and the tether between herself and the elemental was shortened as well.

Aifric |

Aifric doesn't know all the words Chaney is using, but he notices that Mazatl has been called Ms. Green. Green makes perfect sense. So who is Orange? Maybe Chaney, but that doesn't seem right.
Aifric realizes that he called Chaney by his real name instead of his color name, which Aifric couldn't remember anyway. Ms. Green and Mr.... Nope, it's not going to come to him.
Aifric looks at Athena Flynn, hoping she understood what Mr. What's-His-Face said.

Chaney |

Mmhmm. I thought it was foreign. I just didn't understand why the lookout on one of the ships was a friend, in Chaney's eyes. :P I thought you thought it was an allied ship.
"What makes you think... scout on foreign ship... is a friend..?"
"Not a friend, an ally.
From their clothing they were trying to hide. It would be pointless for the crew or troops stationed on the ship to hide. Even if our would be king were trying to disguise the number of soldiers he has available there would be no need to dress them so. He would simply limit the number visible on deck at any one time. Therefor the person Mr. Brown strangled is not supposed to be on the Smiler. They are investigating or opposing the king. I hope you can see how these interests parallel our own?""Now Mr. Brown, can you fetch our guest or must other means be employed?"

Chaney |

Also, Aifric... if it makes you feel any better, Mazatl didn't follow the color spiel all that well, either. :P That's why she -also- thought Mister Blue was Feustus.
{Chaney is beginning to feel like Mel Brooks in Spaceballs.}

Mazatl |

"Or the Magna-whatevers... were trying to keep appearances... of undefended ships... for some reason. Expected defiance. Possible?" She was still coming to terms with the time she'd spent in the water. "Can't undo... seeing our faces... and talents."

Aifric |

Aifric followed what Chaney said this time. He is still upset that Chaney didn't lift a finger to help Mazatl, but Chaney is usually right when he figures things out. Even if he's wrong, they can still interrogate the guy.
Aifric starts up the side of the ship once more to retrieve the guy who stabbed him in the side. Not that Aifric blames him. If somebody had just attacked Aifric out of the blue (Mr. Blue!), he would have stabbed them in the face with his spear.
If the other guy is really a good guy, though, what does that make Aifric? His head begins to hurt thinking about that, and his heart feels a little heavy at the possible answers to that question. Plus his side hurts. He isn't going to mention any of these hurts to anybody. Just get that guy and bring him down to the group. And maybe get ready to apologize.

Aifric |

Feustus, somebody on your ship screamed "Zombies?!" Somebody dressed in black aboard the Smiley heard it, looked toward the sound, and started reaching into a bag. Aifric jumped up on that ship and put a chokehold on the person in black, knocking him out but taking a knife to the side in the process. Feustus depaired for humanity. Svog Kos sneaked around on your ship and found cannonballs with holes in them and later molten silver bubbling away. An elemental grabbed Mazatl and dragged her into the water. Athena knifed it in the heart, "killing" it. (Do elementals die like that or just dissipate? Not sure.) Chaney made a point of not helping Mazatl. Aifric came back down off the Smiley and helped fish Mazatl out of the drink. Mazatl is now having a hard time controlling the elemental giving us a ride. Aifric yelled at Chaney for not helping Mazatl. Chaney deigned to educate Aifric, et al, on his deductions that the figure in black is our ally. Aifric is going back to retrieve the unconscious figure in black.

Mazatl |

And that's what you missed on... GLEE! Also. What's going on for you pretty much paused. Sailor went 'Zombie!' when your Zombie was bad at stealthing. The dinner party doesn't seem to care, which is going on below you. For now.

DM Frogfoot |

Aifric, as you haul the unconscious man out of position, you pull aside some of his black outerwear to reveal the uniform of Ultimus' honor guard that you've seen as part of his retinue. The clothes are made from a fine material considering his sailor rank - you seem to have choked out someone important.

Mazatl |

spout lore, if necessary: 2d6 - 1 ⇒ (6, 4) - 1 = 9
Are there other weredeer in town, or is Mazatl an oddity? If there are others, she shifts to hybrid. If there are not, she simply attempts to obscure her tell and face.

Chaney |

{Ok I'm confused. Let me know where i am misunderstanding.
So the chokee is wearing black outerwear that is NOT a recognized uniform or normal clothing that just happens to be black. Under this there are wearing 'the uniform of Ultimus' honor guard'. So where is the information that he is of 'sailor rank' coming from? }

Mazatl |

I may have misread, but I took it as 'he's high ranking, as evidenced by what is under the black coverings and is on a military boat.' Which makes him high ranking and a sailor. Remember, he could just be wearing black robes and black revealing, and it would grant him a better ability to remain stealthy.

DM Frogfoot |

Indeed, the black outerwear was part of the night watch sailor's uniform. I didn't mean to confuse you with his clothing, and I actually considered just changing the story to match up with Chaney's assumption. However, he's a sailor that is meant to be on the night watch for the Smiler. OOC knowledge but I wanted to prevent too much confusion for you guys!

Chaney |

{But that makes no sense. Having sailors on board to guard against thieves and do maintenance is normal when a ship is in harbor. Not seeing crew moving about day and night would draw comment, and looters. Giving each sailor a special 'night uniform' would be a needless cost, eat up critical space. Making that uniform one that made you harder to see below decks was simply asking for accidents. And accidents on a wooden ship containing both gunpowder and lanterns are to be avoided at all costs.
Hmmm we haven't had much info on the weather. We could say it is cold and the person was wearing a dark cloak and this confused Chaney.}
"Humph, just a oddly dressed sailor. Kill him, restrain him or put him back as you choose. We are free to proceed now."

Aifric |

Aifric snickers.
My recollection from personal experience over thirty years ago (so it may be a fuzzy recollection) is that naval uniforms vary according to the season. Winter blues were such a dark shade of navy blue they looked black. This didn't have anything to do with standing watch at night, though. I seem to remember winter blues, khakis (color, not pants style), salt and pepper (white shirt, navy blue pants) as service uniforms (meaning not dress uniforms). I don't think I ever had any service pants that were white, but I'm sure enlisted men and women wore them in hot weather. Regardless, this game is not set in the US Navy circa 1980; I'm just establishing that IRL there are lots of different naval uniform colors, including some that appear to be black.

Chaney |

{Yes but we are dealing with Renaissance era navy. Navy uniforms, for officers in the Royal Navy anyway came in with the Napoleonic wars and were only required for crew after 1857. Land units had uniforms earlier but we are still talking 17th century. Even Cromwell's New Model Army, one of the first forces to be raised and equipped by a government rather than by nobles/officers, only managed to dictate a vague color scheme. Uniforms came in as guns rendered armor useless and mass production made uniformity cheap.}

Mazatl |

Whatever life magic that tethered Mazatl to the elemental seemed to have finally repaired the damages. "if you had killed him before, it would have been in defense of our allies. Now, it would have been in cold blood. The enemy may take offense to you incapacitating a guard, but they would likely swear vengeance upon us if we drew blood. I am still uncertain that these are enemies, as we have no proof. I say take the weapon he injured you with and return him to his station." she favored the injury with a glance. "If he has Chaney's abilities within his employ, being traced by your blood is a frightening prospect. But be quick with whatever you choose. Our benevolent ally, though slowed, still knows the path to follow."

DM Frogfoot |

[dice=Stealth, Feustus]2d6-1
[dice=Stealth, Zombie]2d6+2
Ouch, snake eyes.
You're creeping over to the stairs leading downward when your zombie lets out a moan of hunger for the living. You manage to duck into the stairwell, but the sailor whirls around and sees undead Ryuko. "What the f-" he shouts, jumping back and bumping against the rail of the ship. "A zombie!" he draws a short blade as your zombie slavers in his direction, unable to attack him without his master's command but hungering for his flesh.
There's a lot of noise coming from the dinner downstairs, what do you do?
Just bumping you to the forefront of the gameplay thread, Feustus. What do you do?

DM Frogfoot |

At least you get XP!
Kazuya's death does not appear to have altered his obstinate personality in the slightest. Though he moves in to attack, the sailor is quicker, and with a quick defensive slash he grievously injures the wereweasel monkzombie's left arm! Your zombie is thwarted for now, no damage done, spend 1 power or the limb is destroyed.
"You'll regret coming here, freak!" the sailor hisses between sharpening canines. Revealing himself to be a werecat, the sailor tries to evade your zombie's reaching grasp and attack you with his sabre! What do you do?

DM Frogfoot |

Svog, you sneak slightly deeper into the cargo hold, and see who was stumping around earlier. A huge human wearing a heavy smock and with a metal faceplate on, he is limping back and forth along the cauldrons on one false wooden leg. He bears an enormous ladle that he uses to fill one of the empty cannonballs up as you watch, setting each one aside in a small cart when he is finished.
The cart he's setting the cannonballs in (one handed despite their hefty weight) is not in his direct line of sight, but in order to steal one you'd need to get within 3 feet of the huge blacksmith-looking dude. What do you do?

Aifric |

Aifric shakes his head and says, "No, I don't want to kill him in cold blood." He hefts the unconscious body over his shoulder, grimaces slightly at the stitch in his side, and mutters, "Aifric, stop the sailor. Aifric, go get the sailor. Aifric, take back the sailor. Here's hoping third time's a charm." When he arrives back on the ship's deck, he retrieves the blade as Mazatl had suggested, hoping none of his blood had dripped onto the ship. In fact, he spends a few seconds checking to make sure there are no visible droplets.

DM Frogfoot |

Kazuya finally responds as you command him to, lurching forward and slapping the sailor in the face. "Agh!" he cries, his face screwing up in disgust as the dead man wrestles with him. You have a momentary advantage. Glancing around you quickly you see that you're still alone on the main deck, but that won't last for long with the sounds of struggling that the sailor's making. You'll be discovered in moments. What do you do?
Aifric, you set the sailor down gently where he was originally hiding, wincing a bit involuntarily from the knife wound. It's holding up okay as long as you take deliberate movements, but the bleeding could start up again pretty easily if you aren't careful. Most of it's drying on your clothes, but you do have to rub out some blood from the floor using your thumb. You think you've cleared it all up when you climb back down.
Those of you on the elemental-boat in the water see a momentary flash of light coming from the crow's nest of the ship Feustus is on. Though I gave names for the two accompanying ships, the Smiler and the Triumphant, I don't think I ever revealed the name of the ship that Feustus and Svog Kos are aboard now. You can read it faintly on the back of the ship by starlight - the Monarch.

Aifric |

Aifric settles in on the elemental-boat, ready to rest a bit after his three trips up and down the ship's hull. He's holding his side without realizing it. Smiling as Mazatl thanks him, he replies, "You're welcome. All for one, and one for all." He glances over at Chaney and drops his smile.
The way Frogfoot described everything, I take it that Aifric was either cleaning his blood off the deck or climbing down when the flash occurred, and thus did not see it?

DM Frogfoot |

Haha, normally I would honor a selfless request such as that, but nope.
At first, everything goes as planned. You carefully reach out and grasp the forge hammer, hefting it off the pair of hooks it's hanging on. With a nervous glance at the hulking smocked figure just a few feet from you, you hurl the hammer to the other side of the cargo hold. With a loud CLANG, the hammer's head strikes a cauldron filled with bubbling silver and clatters to the floor with a loud racket. The peg-leg sailor lets out a confused grunt and moves over to investigate, giving you the time you need to scoop up a cannonball.
It's heavy, and awkward, but you make your way quietly enough over to the door. You open it up and...
There stands another sailor. You immediately notice that this one looks very youthful, can't be more than 15 or 16. A cabin boy? His eyes widen as he takes you in, sees the cannonball you're holding. "Hey!" he shouts, and drops the tray of food he was carrying in shock. It clatters to the floor. What do you do?
