Morgrim Ironbeard
Sunday morning are one of the worst times for my posting schedule (and I need to try to be in bed by a reasonable hour tonight for work in the morning)... so before I go to bed tonight i'll probably just post all my rolls in a spoiler and then when you get home you can do one long post for the whole contest. People will miss out on Morgrim's delightful commentary, but you can all use your imaginations...
edit: and this is why I should always read the gameplay thread before posting comments... let the competition commence continue!
GM Darkblade
I am inclined not to RP the horseshoes contest unless someone particularly wants to have a go at speed horseshoes. I have given you folks a bit much already, and you have been given quite a few threads to follow up on as desired.
The final match will be a villager against the milita trooper unless asked otherwise, freeing PC's for their own devices.
All of the NPC's mentioned thus far are available for interaction and discussion. You may seek them out if you wish. This list includes everyone on the Notables list on the campaign page. All are at the festivities, sharing in the company and companionship of their Trunaun neighbors.

I don't know if anyone cares, but for the sake of immersion I typically use actual other languages for my characters when they're not speaking common (just cut and paste from google translator). For this character the only relevant information is that I use Russian for Dwarven (in case you want to follow suit) but I have a whole list I keep that's pretty consistent across all the PbPs I'm in if anyone wants suggestions for other languages they might want to do that for...
Leira
It's weird for me, because I actually understand Russian xD
Leira
I just have a basic level, but I got most of the words, like family or mother, so I was surprised xD
I actually thought the same, next language will be dwarf, hahaha.
When I GM in tabletop, I often use different languages to simulate this thing. My players have somehow got used to goblins speak Dutch and they love it. I would love I had a higher level!

Are there images of the main NPCs available Darkblade?
It often helps to settle them into your mind and give a feeling of them.
GM Darkblade
I will post a few links in the morning. I have had a rough day today, I found out my identity has been stolen and a fraudulent tax return filed under my SSN. I have started what is going to be a maddeningly long uphill fight against the IRS, law enforcement, and H&R Block. Too tired to do much tonight, sorry.
Delia Everheart
Yikes, Darkblade. Good luck getting that all taken care of. Identity theft is a not a fun thing to have to deal with.
Adir Bloodmoon
"Почему все ..." Morgrim begins, then with a wry grin and some concentration he says, "why's e'eryone tryin t'order beef? I ass'd her t'bring it all a'ready... with bread 'n cheese 'n fish fer kitty..."
Delia Everheart
Just a reminder, Darkblade, I'm headed to Florida tomorrow for a week. Not real sure what my ability to post will be like, but I will try to get at least one post a day.
Leira
Unless we have more background to share between us, or there is some side-quest to explore in about this missing man or other stuff, I feel like I am prepared to move forward and let the events to develop Darkblade.
Songan
|
Darkblade, this might be important to how Songan approaches Grath being found dead...the previous night, Songan made a point of congratulating both Rodrik and Kurst on the tug-of-war competition. I never saw a response from either person, but now I'm thinking any hint Songan may've picked up about Rodrik's disposition then will be beneficial now. Does a check need to be made to remember if Grath answered his congratulations or can it be assumed that he will remember it since he didn't get drunk and it was only the night before?
GM Darkblade
I believe Morgrim mentioned at some point that his uncle works at least part time at Morninghawk's Fine Steel, or Clamor as it is locally known. This should give you a little extra boost when trying to get information there, but I would recommend speaking with Sara Morninghawk first, the uncle as backup confirmation if needed.
Morgrim can state that this hopeknife is not the normally quality produced by Clamor, with or without inscription. The blade is plain, more likely a production or practice blank, not the masterwork quality most are fashioned to become.
Leira
Too much information and open hints, my head is spinning o_O
I will need some time to calmly reread all that and summarise it. I hope for tomorrow, today I am already too tired.
Something smells very bad, a lot of people was hiding info. The half-orc groups had something on hands, yet might be non related to the death.
GM Darkblade
To summarize what you have discovered this morning... Feel free to add anything I may have missed. It is you who needs to find a suspect, if any.
Rodrik is dead, his wrists cut by a hopeknife.
He was engaged to marry a half-orc named Briya Kelver.
He was fighting with his father because of his fiancée.
He moved out of the Longhouse into the Ramblehouse recently.
He was purchasing a new hopeknife.
His recent works upset people due to the content favoring half-orcs.
Examination of his body is ongoing.
Rodrik has been spending time with a half-orc seer and prophet.
Rodrik has been investigating something, no idea yet as to what.
There was no sign of forced entry.
A receipt was found for a hopeknife.
There was an empty secret compartment in the drawer.
The hopeknife is not engraved.
The hopeknife is of only average quality.
The receipt suggests the blade was crafted at Sara Morninghawk's shop.
A strange man stayed and left the same night/early morning of the murder.
An unfinished note was found in the secret desk drawer.
The note mentions a patrol captain and his investigation.
Half-orc laborers stayed nearly a tenday at the inn.
They left graffiti and damages to the rooms.
Some of the graffiti matched the white swords seen around town.
They left a Twisted Nail orc tribe symbol carved in the wall.
The half-orc seer left the Sanctuary the same morning Rodrik died.
The half-orc is no fan of his orcish heritage.
The half-orc is missing.
The half-orc was helping Rodrik with an investigation.

yeah- I want to post too, but there was such a flurry of information while I was busy at work that I'm having trouble keeping up (even with the summary)...
i'm going to post based on my (ooc) understanding, if I screw something up please point it out and/or correct it...
Delia Everheart
Delia, hope I am doing your character justice in your absence. Wish you could have been there to notice the symbol yourself, though perhaps you were with the excellent roll.
.
I imagine you're doing a great job, Darkblade. Sorry I haven't posted yet folks, been trying to stay on top of the posts, but you've been so active lol. It's hard to read 40+ posts on a phone. I will do my best rhough...
Leira
I have made a summary, it might help you out Delia. Feel free to edit the Reference document.
Darkblade, do you have Belkzen, Hold of the Orc Hordes? Does it fit for a Giantslayer player?
GM Darkblade
Belkzen has about 4-5 pages relating to Trunau, the Conquered Lands area, and a timeline up to the current date. It is mostly fluff over crunch, but it details the giants, orcs and key figures of the surrounding lands. I got it on the off chance relevant info might be needed, intending to share bits as needed. I would rate it about 7 out of 10 overall, my biggest gripe is that it is sparse on overland maps.
GM Darkblade
Leira recognizes the smear around Rodrik's lips as Oil of Taggit, a poison known to cause the imbiber to fall into a deep sleep. The positioning would suggest that the liquid was poured into his mouth, smearing as it was forced in. Normally Oil of Taggit is mixed with a food or beverage, nearly tasteless it only leaves a slight oily sheen on the surface.
Regarding the cuts, only Rodrik's two wrists were cut, he did not severe his carotid artery. As Halgra showed Ruby, you "cut here, here, and here". When one uses the hopeknife to kill oneself or another before being taken prisoner by orcs the major lines to cut are in each wrist and then the throat. The wrist cuts are not taken across the wrist side to side but more appropriately diagonally up each wrist from the outside in and then lastly across the carotid also outside in at a downward angle. This assures that an orc could not simply wrap the wrists and stop you from bleeding out. All three nearly assures a quick death, a matter of a short few moments and a better death than what orcs would offer. The fright and terror of such a moment would increase heart rate and speed blood loss dramatically. While not actively spelled out aside from it being a "3 cuts method" (the exact details are not in the AP) I based the layout from my own experiences with wounds, trauma, and a previous work history within the mental health field. If you can find your own pulse in the neck, you can do well enough with the blade to sever the carotid or jugular, whichever side you favor I suppose.

I thought Delia and myself were continuing the investigation at the inn after the others were hustled out. So not sure i'd have time to immediately go to the forge with Morgrim, since at the time we were speaking with the innkeeper and searching the other two rooms.
GM Darkblade
In the time you were taking at the inn, the others traveled to the Sanctuary. They in turn questioned both the priestess and paladin about Rodrik and Katrezra, allowing you time to finish and followed behind.
Your investigation did not involve taking 20, so it was somewhat quicker than for the other group. Further, there was not much to search in the first room, it had never been slept in, only the desk had been disturbed, hence the forgotten letter. The damaged rooms were mostly graffiti and broken furniture, not a lot to search, especially since the cleaning crew was still standing by, waiting to resume their work.
You would have arrived at the Sanctuary at approximately the time the other group was about to begin the "autopsy." As Delia's help was needed examining the body, it would have freed Groin to go with Morgrim, who did not want to participate in examining Rodrik's remains.
If you would prefer, you may either be with Morgrim, or with the others at the Sanctuary. I know it is a little hand-waving of time, but it is kind of needed to keep everyone on a rough track.
I think Morgrim was suggesting after he speaks with Sara, he was going to look for Brinya Kelvers, which I assume would be the next stop for the others as well, a point for you all to regroup.
How does everyone wish to proceed? I am happy to adjust the storyline as needed.
Leira
It works for me.
Leira will try to ask for other names gather information while looking for her after the fight.
The information given to Morgrim is most interesting. Once he shares it, Leira will want to know what has been of the scabart. Also, was he dressing night or street clothing?
Leira
Sara looks to Morgrim, eyes narrowing suspiciously. What business do you have with Brinya, or any other half-orc in this matter? Do you think to link her to Rodrik's death. She would never cause him harm. He was a friend to many half-orcs in town, she in particular. He was not as hateful as his father, and we all knew that.
I think what Darkblade wanted to show is the marriage is something secret and Sara doesn't know about it, so that is why she reacts in surprise. Perhaps we better keep it secret and look for an excuse to look for Brinya :P

It is correct that most people do not know of the relationship or engagement between Rodrik and Brinya. His father and brother know, the clergy perhaps knows due to his time spent at the Sanctuary, this missing half-orc Katrezra who was his friend, who it also happens was a friend to Brinya and Sara. Maybe even his surrogate uncle Omast Frum knew, but that would be about it. Aside from wild speculative rumors it is a very small circle for that particular secret.

Hey guys, back home now and will work on getting caught up as quickly as I can! Sorry for my absence, I tried to keep caught up on the reading, but we were too busy and you guys had too many awesome posts! :)
Leira
It is a lot of information, it needs really an effort to follow it, but once you do it is just awesome!
I feel like Colombo! :D
I have kept updated my reference document. You can find it useful as a summary, it took me most of Saturday morning and I have been updating since then.
Adir Bloodmoon
GM D, thank you very much for the clarifications. They help a lot.
I know Adir set a firestorm in motion, and if we can't trust the guy's betrothed...
But it's been very cool to see everyone RP it, even those who severely disagree with Adir. Thanks for being a fun group! =)
Morgrim Ironbeard
Hey everyone... I'm really sorry but I've got some RL stuff going on and I'm going to have to step away from the boards indefinitely... I'll finish up the investigation before I leave (and that should be enough time to find a replacement for me if you wish to do so).
I'm bummed to miss out on running this AP with you all but I hope it goes well.
