Game Master Dan E

Recruited to reclaim the town of Kelmarane from a tribe of gnolls, six adventurers find themselves caught up in a series of events that may change the face of Katapesh: the Legacy of Fire.

Zeladiel speeds across the ceiling (-F26), stowing the rod again as he does so. He unleashes another bolt of energy from his bow across the room at where he last saw the gnoll beast awaiting Grall (I11). A ball of fire erupts, much smaller that the previous explosions but still as large as a human. And this one doesn't fade after flaring into being, instead sitting in place, burning, and casting its light about.

flaming sphere (elemental fire, DC 16 Ref)
Damage: 3d6 + 3 ⇒ (4, 6, 5) + 3 = 18

Zeladiel searches the shadows for the High Priest and takes aim.

We're getting a wee bit borderline on the targeting in the dark but the beast is about the same height as the barrier and you target the sphere on an area not a creature so giving you and your busty intelligence the benefit of the doubt.

Using his haste to good effect, Zeladiel moves just past Grall and Khalid, remaining just in shadow above the inquisitor's light bubble. The elf can no longer see his target and the room before him his shrouded in darkness but his precisely ordered mind speeds through the necessary calculations and both his arm and magic responds.

The sphere comes into existence just above the gnoll beast's head. Caught by surprise, the beast tries to duck but is too slow and its frightful cries echo around the chamber as the sphere burns fiercely into its face.

The sphere provides a small circle of light and within the beast, stricken by ice and now fire, does not look in good shape although its morale remains at beserk.

Reflex 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 1 = 12 fail

The stinking cloud ceases abruptly, the area clearing in mere moments as the conjuration magic expires. With the cloud no longer obscuring your sight, Linah's light extends out to about the cloud's former area. Unsurprisingly, the gnolls who were caught seem to have struggled their way back and are invisible in the darkness.

A conclusion backed up by the arrow that zooms into the light bubble, aimed at Linah. Its a powerful shot but not well aimed by the likely just recovered from fits of nausea archer and screeches off the priestess' chest armor.

Arrow vs Linah 1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 6 + 2 = 12 miss
1d8 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 + 2 = 12

The gnoll beast moves east away from the flaming sphere, toward the eastern edge of the barrier from the sound of its unstealthy movements.

The head priest and what seems to be his sole mobile adept (and the spiritual ally) are in darkness and if their casting further spells you can't see the results. You can hear the priest chivying and urging his diminishing forces though, apparently re-directing them to the east as well to meet your approach.

The number of watching gnolls continues to dwindle as you drop more of your opponents without taking further casualties in return. There are still plenty left though, certainly enough to make things messy given you aren't far away from a clump at the bottom of the stairs up.

- The carrion pit is 25' deep at its northern section, it slopes up to the barrier at the south.
- Magic pit is 30' deep. Reflex save at + 2 if adjacent at end of turn to avoid failling in.

Grall is up. Your overdue a map update but I'll need to re-draw anyway in response to his movement so if he can confirm where he's going we can break up his movement with the map.

Lots of enemies and lots of downed enemies so lets just recap as you may be getting confused. There were 4 adepts initially. Two went down to the fireball and one to the iceball leaving one somewhere (others might not be dead). Two gnoll beasts, one definately dead, one badly iced/fired. Two swordsmen and two archers in each of the west and east blocks. To the west an archer and swordsman are in the pit, one swordsman is *up* and the other archer downed. To the east 2 swordsman and one archer still up (and presumably mobile with stinking cloud expired).

When you get to that map update, believe Linah's still carrying Sajan's lantern. If she has it pointed the right way, that'll give us 120 feet of dim light straight through the gap for Nuveril to try to find a target.

Grall's swing is wild and uncontrolled but so fast and strong that the still green faced gnoll warrior can't do much about it, the barbarian's blade sheering straight through a corner of the warrior's shield and plowing into its left shoulder. It goes down hard, bleeding out from the wound. AC 19 so thank that last round of haste!

Khalid quickly follows the barbarian his light showing the speargnoll, beast and archer beyond. Grall in H, 27, therefore assume F,25 - 26 for Khalid.

The speargnoll G,20 lowers his head and charges forward at Grall screaming G,24 which puts him still just behind the barrier. White flecks flow from its mouth like some kind of rabid dog. Its either found the ability to enter into a barbarian like rage or is under some kind of similar magical compulsion. Grall is still slighty off-balance from his attack and is unable to parry, taking a painful stab in the fleshy part of his right thigh that he can feel even through his own rage.

Fair enough I went specifically looking for a mention of light and failed to find the obvious so reading fail on my end. That will light the priest for everyone, although the barrier still blocks normal LOS for the non-enlarged, non-ceiling walkers).

Momentarily worried that she had lost Zeladiel as well Linah draws a sigh of relief when the elf briefly flashes by in the light. She tags on to Khalid as the inquisitor rushes past and sweeps Sajan's lantern across the platform to make sure that nothing tries to sneak up on the party from behind.

Move action to G25
Is it a move action to sweep the lantern back across the room to see if anything is moving around the platform behind us (from C8-9 to -I-M17-19 to A27-29)?

There's not a solid barrier at the column line, right? So once Nuveril clears Grall, Khalid and Linah's lights will illuminate the gnolls in G 17 & 20, as well as the gnoll beast and back to the archer, albeit in dim light, in addition to the light from Zeladiel's flaming sphere?

Linah moves up to Grall, sidestepping behind the giant barbarian and pointing her lantern backwards. Moved your destination as Grall is standing there.

Nuveril flashes past both, her hammer a blur as it streaks past her opponent's blocking shield to slam into its right side. The sound of multiple ribs cracking is audible, the gnoll staggering back and coughing up a gout of dark blood that runs down its front. It continues to stand evidently by the barest of margins, its scimitar wavering in a suddenly shaking right hand.

Well behind the light bubbles now, Zeladiel's missiles strike the head priest one after the after, its magical protections clearly no use against the force darts. The priest is clearly tough but surely the damage from the elf's evocations is starting to add up.

At the mage's mental command the sphere rolls east toward the standing adept, the gnoll waving its wand jerkily as it tries desperately to move sidewise. Without success though, as again the adept's heavy armour seems to work against them, the sphere catching it square in the back. The adept shrieks as it burns, clearly very close to falling despite its impromptu healing.

G,17 Reflex 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9 fail

With the elf's actions you feel yourself slowing down back to normal speed, the enchantment expired.

The eastern archer holds its ground, finding plenty of target to shoot at Grall. The arrow is well placed but lacks power and the barbarian barely feels it in his rage.

The gnoll beast is quite badly injured, its hide alternately blackened and reddened from fire and ice but it dashes forward roaring to claw at Nuveril, reaching past the staggering swordsgnoll. It moves very, very quickly for something so large and the halfling takes a scoring to her back as she ducks under a blow that might fell a normal warrior.

1d6 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 6 + 1 = 11

It remains difficult to read the head priest's emotions under his mask but it sounds like frustration creeping into his voice as he chants, the transculent shape of the spiritual ally sweeing across from atop the barrier to interpose itself between you and its caster.

Through the fire of his rage Grall feels himself assaulted by waves and waves of paralysing force that threaten to lock up his muscles and leave him standing helplessly in place. Oddly, Nuveril feels the same although a sympathetic shadow of the attack on Grall.

A bouncing hold person spell. Grall needs to make a DC 17 will save. If he is succesful (and only then) the spell bounces to Nuveril and she will need to make her own save.

Following his cast, the priest backs up, seemingly trying to create some space to let its magic do its work.

In dire straights from the flaming sphere, the adept flees from it to G,13 using its wand on itself in evident desperation.

I need to correct two mistakes sorry. First, slight mess on the description above that the spearwielder is staggered. It has 20hp base but I neglected to factor in the extra 2hp from the rage spell it is currently under, leaving it on 2hp rather than 0hp. No mechanical difference other than it won't fall over after its attack. Second and more significantly, it should have received an AOO from Khalid's move.

The gnolls' joy is short-lived as Grall breaks free from the priest's enchantment, his shout echoing around the chamber.

The two remaining carrion guard seem determined to fight on despite their serious wounds. Having managed a long gash to the inquisitor's arm as he closed and with the man now between it and Grall, the spear wielder steps back to give itself room and thrusts frenetically at Khalid with it. With his feet settled under him, the inquisitor is too skilled and too fast though, repeatedly turning the point of the spear aside with hit scimitar.

Matters are surely approaching end game now. The head priest screams at the two gnolls released from the pit to get into the fight. It seems to be prepearing itself for personal combat as well, falling into a sonerous chant and then yelling in gnoll.

E'ovala, dirta, meeshairala, ROVAGUG!

Gnoll:

ROVAGUG! Drread masterr! Grrant me the powerr to destrroy yourr enemies, blasphemerrs of your temple!

Dark energy swirls around the priest in a cloud before seeming to penetrate its skin. Seemingly invigorated, the priest carresses the morning star on its belt although it does not yet draw it.

Spellcraft DC 19:

The spell is divine power.

The spiritual ally flies forward, floating above the swordsgnoll that Nuveril just dropped (I,25). Again its force weapon cuts into Grall, opening a fresh wound to his hip.

Greataxe vs Grall 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (13) + 10 = 23 hit

The adept again runs away from the sphere G,13 and uses its wand to heal itself.

- The 8' high barrier of carrion and rubble is blocking LOS to the middle of the chamber.
- The carrion pit is 25' deep at its northern section, it slopes up to the barrier at the south.

Map update will be tonight. Fine if you want to wait. On the eastern front, I,24 is down with the ally floating above it. G,23 (barely standing) one square west. Beast (below 0hp) and archer (unwounded) in same positions.

The gnoll barbarian easily evades the force axe with a neat roll as he moves closer to the priest.

Don't think that will his the spearman, but on the off-chance that it does, Khalid will use his move action to move a square to be determined after the map update.

It isn't Khalid's neatest blow but whatever enchantment affects the speargnoll has it neglecting its defenses and it is a heartbeat too slow to block the strike with the haft of its spear. With the blade in close there is nothing preventing the inquisitor from slashing Tempest across its throat, killing it. AC 15 just enough to do the job with a -2 from its rage.

Map update to follow for Khalid's move.

Linah pushes Nuveril's scold to the back of her mind to concentrate with the fight. She does the same with Grall's taunt towards the priest. The savage nature of the barbarian's words, the casual mention of death, made her cringe deep inside but there would be nothing won to bring it up. It was probably something rooted deep in Grall's nature. Linah empties her mind of such thoughts and reaches out and channels one of her spells as pure energy into her friend.

MAP to Khalid's impulse (although I moved Linah already).

Double checking Khalid will need to five foot step at least to reach the spearman so that will end his movement. Grall has only 20' of move with his tumble.

Nuveril visibly fumes when Grall reaches over her to steal her opportunity to finish the job with the gnoll-beast, and the enlarged gnoll pours salt on her wounded pride with his boast that he will be the one to end the fight. When he then steps in front of her, his matted, furry legs blocking her chance to charge the priest and regain some chance at glory, Linah and Khalid trailing in his wake, she lets out an incoherent shout of rage and dashes for the only target she can reach upon which to take out her frustrations, the archer gnoll lurking at the edge of the magical light, ducking and weaving away from the malign spirit which serves the priest.

The last of the four carrion swordsman, just freed from the pit, is clearly unsettled by the carpet of friendly bodies but moves as the priest directs, taking up position to his side and readying his weapon. I,13.

Linah casts her healing spell and takes several steps toward Grall to deliver it, some of the barbarian's more recent wounds healing over.

Nuveril moves safely away from the ghostly force. The eastern archer has no good answer to the ball of rage that is the halfling barbarian rushing it, a desperate swipe with its bow fails to turn the hammer swing that shatters its pelvis. The archer sways on its feet, still up and managing to keep hold of its bow but it is clearly very close to falling.

Nuveril is fairly close to the cluster of gnolls at the base of the steps now. They growl and hoot, cursing her and shaking their weapons, but seem ill inclined to rush in with the battle seemingly tipping your way.

The western archer has no clear shot at Khalid or Linah (the later well in cover between two of the pillars). It moves south N,9 and fires off a quick shot at Grall that finds his left thigh, although the gash is shallow.

The adept again pulls out all the stops to keep away from the sphere, sidestepping back and forth to get out of its inexorable path. Again he does extremely well in his heavy armor to avoid being burnt.

Reflex 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 1 = 18 pass

The priest is just commencing a furious response to Grall in gnoll. Unspoilered for dramatic purposes.

MANGY CURR! I WILL D..

When Zeladiel's perfectly placed arrow drills through its mask hole and finds its left eye socket.

ARRGH! UUGH! Turning a circle, the priest screams in agony and near panic, clawing away the mask to try and grab at the arrow. Its features revealed, the high priest is an ugly gnoll, old, weathered and scarred beneath the sheet of blood now flowing down its cheek.

Arrow still protruding from its face it somehow continues to stand perhaps only with the benefit of its fortifying enchantments.
