Linah grabs the scimitar next to her bedroll and dashes into the room where she's met with the darknened tunnel. "What is happening? Where are you?" she calls out to her companions who was swallowed by the darkness.
Move action to grab my scimitar (unless i can do that as a part of the move action below)
Move action to N11 (double move to N15 if retrieving my scimitar is included in my first move action)
DM Dan E |
Your in a highly dangerous location and I'm assuming your either wearing your weapons or have them so close to hand that you grab them as you stand (shield a little different). Thus yes you can double move.
Linah dashes past Zeladiel who readies to cast. With Grall and Khalid in the darkness though it seems your attackers have no shortage of closer targets...
Need actions for Sajan and Nuveril. If the former ventures into the darkness he might want to pre-roll perception.
Sajan Krama Sumna |
According to map and description Sajan himself is already in darkness so "venturing forth into it" has confused me.
Sajan moved through the darkness and emerged out on the other side.
M25, think I have a standard left.
1d20 + 12 ⇒ (7) + 12 = 19 Perception.
Nuveril |
I believe the radius drawn on the map is Linah's light on Sajan's knuckles. The darkness effect begins at M-N 23 and extends eastward so cuts him off from seeing Khalid. The DM didn't update the map after the darkness was cast, iow.
Nuveril |
By the time Nuveril looks up from grabbing her shield, she is just in time to see the last glimmer of Linah's cantrip swallowed up by the darkness. "We will charge to our deaths," she growls. "We cannot fight what we cannot see. Either make more light, or we must fall back and draw them out of the darkness."
Delay, pending being able to see something. Did Sajan pick up his lantern to carry with him or leave it at the campsite?
DM Dan E |
The hasted Sajan rushes to Grall's aid, the agile monk avoiding a stationary Khalid and easily keeping his feet despite his lack of sight. He auto-passes the DC 10 acrobatics check to move more then half speed in the dark even with a -4.
His light is entirely swallowed as he goes, leaving Nuveril, Linah and Zeladiel in darkness and stopping the halfling short. Assuming a delay until either Khalid or Linah manage to do something sighty.
Recalling what he can of the angle of the passage, the monk senses whatever is attacking Grall directly in front of him. In other words he makes it to O,26 and determines P,26's square which allows an attack (coincidentally a flank albeit with a 50% miss).
Further noise from the darkness indicates Grall is still up and fighting hard.
A fast moving Sajan stops just short of your target, providing enough of a distraction for you to land two quick, horizontal slashes to the creature's torso. Your damage is definately over powering its healing and black blood is starting to leak down its legs but it shows no sign of slowing just yet. You step sidewise trying to avoid the flank.

Khalid 24

Grall 6a
Nuveril 6b (delaying)
Effects
- Haste (Zeladiel, Linah, Nuveril, Sajan) expires round 7
- Light (on Sajan but see below)
Notes
- Note the light situation. Assume you have a small banked fire in the tomb room providing a little light. Darkness everywhere else. Light spell on Sajan currently cancelled by darkness sphere.
- Darkness sphere extends to M,N,23 on the map.
In areas of darkness, creatures without darkvision are effectively blinded. In addition to the obvious effects, a blinded creature has a 50% miss chance in combat (all opponents have total concealment), loses any Dexterity bonus to AC, takes a –2 penalty to AC, and takes a –4 penalty on Perception checks that rely on sight and most Strength- and Dexterity-based skill checks.
Khalid is up but I owe you a map update so he may want to wait.
Zeladiel Araxyll |
Is the edge of the darkness mobile or stationary? (Is it ducking and weaving or perfectly still- ie has it been cast on a creature/carried object or area/stationary object?) Also, does the edge of the darkness sphere cut vertically across the ground, or is it at an angle? (ie where is the centre of it?)

Cast Dispel Magic on the sphere of darkness (if i can target it): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17
DM Dan E |
Khalid delays while Linah prays desperately to dispel the sphere. The priestess can't see the effect but knows where it is and that seems enough to try. Narratively as Linah acts after the creatures.
In the dark, the creatures continue their assault. Not going to spoiler based on what happens below. Only Grall can see the further one eyeing him and running a long raspy tongue along its wicked teeth as it closes seemingly intent on finishing him, while the closer launches a frenzied attack on Sajan, apparently trying to down the blinded monk before he can set himself.
Grall is hit again and again, the creature working its way inside the reach of his blade and cutting him left and right. Its mouth snaps for his throat, a fight ending strike if not a killing one. But at the last second the barbarian pulls back, the creature's teeth finding his shoulder instead. Grall is left barely standing but well standing. 2hp?

Unable to defend himself effectively in the dark, Sajan takes several punishing strikes as well, the other creature raking him repeatedly with its claws and oppening deep and painful cuts to his torso, arm and thigh.
Claw vs Sajan 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (16) + 12 = 28 hit

Linah continues to pray as she hears her allies grunts of pain. For a moment though the priestess doesn't think it is going to work. Whatever the creatures are, their magic is ancient and potent. Linah can feel the malign taint as she struggles with it.
But from deep inside a surge of divine power fills the priestess near to bursting. Her prayer becomes a command. And that the sphere cannot stand against, the thing blowing apart to be replaced by the priestess' light. 17 was the DC :)
The two creatures are revealed fully to Khalid and Sajan, emaciated figures which look like horned human skeletons smothered within a bone-tight hide of slimy leather, red liquid dripping from their bodies. The closer one looks like it has taken a fair bit of damage from Grall but looks no less dangerous, the further one looks unharmed. Grall himself looks in very bad shape, the barbarian bleeding freely.
The light from Linah's cantrip spills around the corner of the passage revealing the way for Nuveril, Linah and Zeladiel (if not their immediate vicinity).
Stripped of their preferred conditions, the creatures howl, the first sound they've made, but in anger it seems not fear. With Grall's state and Sajan wounded they still seem to like their chances. Neither show any sign of backing down.
Assume Khalid and Nuveril come off delays here. O,25 is a valid move for the former.

An internet cookie for sticking with the knowledge roll.
The creature block's Khalid's strike with its arm as Nuveril dashes forward toward the fray empowered by Zeladiel's magic. Khalid, then Nuveril given the former has the higher initiative bonus.
The creatures are babau, assassin demons not from your plane. You can't quite recall their special abilities although casting darkness is obviously one of them. This reveals outsider/demon traits.
Zeladiel's arrow finds his targets forearm, although the creature quickly yanks it out, the wound partly healing over. DR
Sajan and Grall to close out the round. Everyone can see normally and I think its evident to Sajan that something bad may happen if he punches the thing.

Sorry for the delay, busy weekend although my wife and I have officially past our life in the UK test. Checking my posts I overstated damage on the creature's bite attacks in the last round (thats what I get for copy pasting) so Grall and Sajan get 3 hp back.
Now able to see, Sajan lunges forward and takes a firm grasp on the wounded creature's shoulder. It pulls back but the monk moves with it, holding it in place. The thing is difficult to grab though, the slime dripping from its body burning like acid. Grappled but a DC 18 reflex check or take 1d8 ⇒ 1 acid damage.
Grall moves quickly to finish it off but is hampered by his substantial wounds. A stumble and his first strike misses wide although the follow up drives a deep cut in the thing's thigh.

The further creature grins as it moves to finish Grall, its leading claw raking deep into his belly and the mighty barbarian finally falls, bleeding out from a dozen wounds, his falchion clanging against the stone.
Not content with dropping him, the evil thing hits the barbarian again for good measure with its claws and teeth as he falls, opening up yet more wounds to Grall's unmoving body. It finishes by stepping over the barbarian's prone form shifts to P,27, its smile now wide indeed. Its not clear if Grall is alive or dead....

With Sajan also heavily wounded, the grappled creature attempts to break the monk's hold by dropping him, lurching forward to bite and claw. With him focusing on the defensive, the monk is able to keep the thing back though, shoving it away and maintaining his grip.

As the wounded of the two creature struggles in Sajan's grip, Khalid takes advantage, the inquisitor's blade glowing almost painfully bright. Something approaching fear shows on the demon's face but by then Tempest is already sweeping forward. A *swick* sounds at the impact and the creature's head falls to the ground, seperated from its body.
